The comment section: 50% - "The 2018 Steelers should be on this list." 40% - "The 2018 Panthers should be on this list." 9% - "The 2018 Redskins should be on this list." 1% - "Falcons blew a 28-3 lead."
The 2018 Steelers had a pretty bad collapse, but it was nothing compared to the 2018 Panthers. They started the year 6-2 and finished with a record of 7-9 thanks to a 7-game losing streak.
I would argue the Bengals had the worst collapse of 2018. I wouldn't count the Steelers as a collapse because they started out in fourth place and didn't start climbing the division until midseason.
Similar to the 2021 Cardinals. Start 7-0 which included blowout wins over the Titans and Rams on the road and looked like world beaters with the #1 scoring offense(they were averaging 30 points a game), then they had the heartbreaking loss to GB because AJ Green didn't turn around and it was all down hill after that. They finished the year 11-6(which included losses to the Panthers and Lions), lost a playoff home game by losing the last game to the awful Seahawks, then get embarrassed in the playoffs by the Rams.
As an Eagles fan, we had one this past year. 10-1 to 11-6 and getting smacked by the Bucs in the WC was embarrassing. I wish that NFL Network would revive these. I love Top 10
@@robertdrake560 the UN recognizes 251 countries and territories (195 “official” countries are part of the UN itself as members). One example could be Taiwan, which some countries recognizes as an independent nation while others don’t (like China, mostly due to political/economic reasons) But the real number is not really important in this case, he’s right about the fact that football is way behind soccer internationally
@@gopackgocheesehead4life57 how is players taking less money to be on our team cause they recognize that we were already only 1 half competent qb away from a deep playoff run already equal to buying a sb?!
People forget the 2011 and 2012 Bears teams. The 2011 Bears started 7-3 and went on to end the season 8-8, while the 2012 Bears started 7-1 and missed the playoffs at 10-6. I still remember how the wk16 game vs GB the Bears got the Packers to 4th down 3 times in the final drive and they still lost. Those seasons got Lovie Smith fired.
Look up the 1982 redskins America’s Game. theismann went to the CFL when he could have played for the dolphins the 3 years the dolphins were in Super Bowls.
The 2011 Packers were 15-1 in the regular season. They then proceeded to lose in the divisional round of the playoffs to a damn wild card team. That was historically tragic.
@PleebsOG Saying this is historically tragic is either not remembg anything of that time period or being extremely dramatic. That Giants team won their division so they were a WC team; they were dangerous because they began 6-2 had a huge slump to drop to 6-6 and then snapped out of it to go 9-7 and win their division. Same team beat the Patriots during the season and lost to third Pack team in the slump 35-38. I’m not sure how it’s possible to say that about a team that began 6-2, snapped out of their slump before it cost them their season, and then finished 7-1. The team wins their division and then in the playoffs as the four seed play the toughest option possible at each round as they beat the falcons and don’t let their offense score, beat the 1 seed packers on the road, and then beat the Niners who were the 2 seed in the road in overtime. Then they win the whole thing against the Pats who were the 1 seed. This also happens to be the same team that not many seasons prior as the 5 seed won every single game on the road and then beat the undefeated Pats squad so how that ever been seen as tragic when we have literally seen this same team do this exact thing before? And how are you shitting on losing to a wild card team, who wasn’t a wild card team, when this 15-1 Packers team is one of the greatest examples of how misleading it is to judge a team all on a record. Think back on things from the packers from the season right before this one. They were the 6 seed who into the postseason on a tie breaker because they beat the giants in their second to last game head to head. Then if you recall this packers squad became the second 6 seed in history to win the Super Bowl. You may also want to resell that they may have been 10-6 that season but they did not trail by more than 7 points that entire season in 2010. The six losses they had were by a total margin of 20 points. If you’re going to claim any team was an all time mess up for losing against a team who didn’t have a pretty record it doesn’t make a good argument if not only was the team that beat them the one that won the entire thing but it’s even worse of an argument when the team you’re shaming just won the superbowl as the 6 seed and are possibly the best team sample of how a team can be way better or way worse than their record may portray them being.
@Costa Zambaras Don't forget, getting outsmarted and overmatched by the Chiefs in Super Bowl IV, getting run over by the Dolphins in Super Bowl VIII, getting done in by questionable officiating and the Steelers in Super Bowl IX, and being physically dominated by the Raiders in Super Bowl XI. Oh, and that's not even mentioning being stopped at the goal line in Washington by an injured Darrell Green in 1987. Yeah, the Vikings just can't catch a break, can they?!?!
@Costa Zambaras I'm with you on the Paul Allen bit. It's one of those things where you shouldn't laugh, but you can't stop yourself because it's just that funny. As for the Vikings/Saints game, as a die hard Saints fan all my life, that's the one time I've ever had to pull against Minnesota. As questionable as my team's tactics were (and I think we're still paying for it if what happened in Minnesota last year is any indication) I knew the Vikings were gonna find a way to lose that game.
Yes, my 2012 Chicago Bears started 7-1... My QB Jay Cutler got injured and they never came back... That shows you how important Cutler was for the Bears. Since then, they let him go for Mike Glennon, Trubisky, washed out Sanchez and I don't know how many other quarterbacks...
@@scoobycarr5558 I don't know what happened to the Bears that year. I remember they had a home loss to the Houston Oilers if I'm correct and they never recovered.
If this list were remade today, the 2022 Titans have to be on this list. Starting 7-3 despite trading away their best receiver only to lose seven in a row to miss the playoffs, while also creating the legend of Trevor Lawrence and getting to watch said receiver play in the Super Bowl is just colossal failure.
To be fair, Ryan Tannehill was injured. But the 2023 Jaguars should be on the list. No reason to blow a division lead after winning it last year and starting 8-3.
As a lifelong Redskins fan, the 1978 season always sticks in my craw. However, the 1996 Skins started out 7-1 and fell to 9-7 and no playoffs. Darrell Green said around mid-season. "This team is not that good." (as their record would indicate at that time) As a player who had been through the wars for over a decade at that point, he knew what a playoff and Super Bowl team were all about. And he was exactly right. Speaking of 1978, there were three collapses that season, not just the Skins. The 1978 Packers started out a very surprising 7-2 and looked to be the '78 version of the '77 Orange Crush Broncos. But they stumbled badly down the stretch and finished 8-7-1. With that tie coming against the Vikings, which in the end cost them, since the Vikings also finished 8-7-1 and won the division due to tiebreakers. 1978 also featured the most famous "Collapse Play" of all time. The 1978 Giants started out an also very surprising 5-3. They started stumbling after that, and of course, the roof really caved in on them thanks to the Miracle of the Meadowlands. A play that probably had more multiple team-wide implications than any other. They finished 6-10, the entire coaching and front office staff was fired and they drafted some small college QB from Moorehead State the next season. Somebody named Phil Simms.
The most amazing thing about those three teams collapsing in '78 is that not only did none of them make the playoffs, but none of them even reached 9 wins. With only the Packers even having a winning record (barely)
I love all these sports casters that say Farve should have sat down; if someone offered me millions in the twilight of my career I would have taken it too😎
And neither was the worst Jets collapse ever. That was in 1986 when the Jets started the season 10-1. There were articles written about how they were the best NFL team in all history. Then they were blown out in all five remaining games. Ended up 10-6 and missed the playoffs.
@@dreiss Jets made the playoffs in 1986 and won the first-round game that year against the Chiefs. So they don't belong here. They do belong on some epic-flop list for the way they lost their next and last game that season, in double overtime to the Browns. Jets were rolling until Mark Gastineau got flagged for roughing the passer on a bonehead play that gave the Browns new life in a game they were going to lose.
dreiss uhh wrong the jets made the playoffs that year. They beat the chiefs in the wild card round 35-15 then proceeded to shoot themselves in the foot with mark gastineaus roughing the passer penalty in their divisional round loss in double overtime to the Browns
2008 Bucs. Started 9-3, then with 4 games to go, DC Monte Kiffin announces he's leaving the team at the end of the season. Bucs fold like wet laundry for the remaining 4 games. Still had a playoff shot at 9-6, but had to beat JaMarcus Russell & the 4-11 Raiders at home. Tampa lost 31-24.
@@Joescotterpuss He was probably in a delusion hoping that they were ranking Best Touchdowns Scored In the Final Minute or something crazy like that because he STILL can't come to grips with the fact that he sucks at something he loves.
The 2003 Vikings should be #1 on the list. They start 6-0 have all their star players including Randy moss and Dante culpepper and they lose to 4 4-12 teams including blowing a 17-6 4th quarter lead to the lowly 3-12 cardinals!
That was bad but that should be like 2nd. When you go 9-2 and dont make the playoffs nothing is worst than that. You only needed 1 game, and even then 9-7 could realistically get you into the playoffs depending on how the league is looking.
I just remember PA disgustingly signing off with “We’ll see you in August.” After KNOWING they were going to the playoffs all season that was a shocker!
2018 Redskins 6-3 before Alex Smith breaks his leg Two weeks later back up QB Colt McCoy breaks his leg Following week Mark Sanchez starts Week after that Josh Johnson starts and finishes the season On top of that the Redskins finished the season with 5th and 6th string O-line guys, a defense that was top 8 for the first 8-10 weeks and finished as the 17th ranked defense and 28th ranked offense. Front office also let go of DJ Swearinger (safety) who was having a pro-bowl season. Redskins finished 7-9 with 24 guys on IR this season (no you read that correctly, 24).
Niners top 3 receivers are injured, their franchise quarterback was injured the entire season, and we're on our 3rd and 5th string halfbacks. Hey, but at least we have a tight end
@@parker7891 At least you had some good receivers to start the season. Redskins came into the season with relatively no name receivers. Still, can't argue with that 49ers record. Losing Jimmy G and receivers was indeed crippling.
@@littlebrady I'm also a Redskins fan. The fact that we had to sign and start Mark Sanchez was already enough reason to include them on this year's list of collapses.
With the '09 Broncos, Jim Rome cursed them when he infamously said, "the fishwraps are calling this Bronco team the worst 4-0 team of all time, but they may very well be the BEST 4-0 team of all time." With the exception of Rodgers getting lucky in the Super Bowl that one time, Jim Rome's hyperbole NEVER ends well for the team he's hyping.
mattsme13 Just so you’re aware, the Mike Tice clip was from a 2004 interview (there’s a bar in the top left corner of the screen) and not a current appearance. Not that it makes him any less of an ass, however.
Radio show interviewer: Hey, Al Capone, I'd like you come on this show about Greatest Gangsters of the first half of the 20th century. Al Capone:. Ok, but don't ask me any questions about being a gangster.
@@redt7452 that's incorrect. They still got the pick but after Carolina and Jacksonville picked. Also the guy they picked was a 6 time pro bowler and 5 time all pro. Not a bad pick at all
The Vikings are the biggest choke ever. Not just season wise but playoffs. 1987 NFC Championship: Dropped the ball at the goal line- Redskins go on to win the Super Bowl. 1998 NFC Championship: Gary Andersen missed his first kick in 2 years and blew a 7 point lead with only minutes left. 2009 NFC Confrence Championship : Brett Favre gets picked off in field goal range with seconds left on the clock. Saints win in overtime. Also there have been 2 years we have went at least 5-0 and missed the playoffs 2015 Wild Card: Blair Walsh misses a kick losing to Seattle 9-10 2018 Playoffs: We blew a 17 point lead and we were lucky to get out of that game alive and the proceeded to lose 31 to the Eagles Also we traded our entire future for ONE PLAYER. Which gave the Cowboys their dynasty. And can't forget losing 4 super bowls in the 70s Edit: Also we haven't had a franchise QB since the 70s. Every Quarterback we either trade, is a guy like Tavaris Jackson, Christian Ponder, or Mat Cassel, gets injured, or is some QB in his last seasons (looking at you Favre and Cunningham). P.S: It hasn't been all that bad... one year we made the playoffs at 8-8 and beat the Packers in the Wild Card game and Randy Moss mooned the fans and Lambeau. Now THAT was awesome
As a Vikings fan, I think Keenum was a product of Shurmur. I think if you put Cousins and Keenum both in Shurmur’s system, I think Cousins performs better. I could be wrong though
Don't let this distract you from the fact that Hector is gonna be running 3 Honda Civics with spoon engines. On top of that he just came into Harry's and ordered 3 t66 turbos with NOS and a Motec System Exhaust.

What’s funny is how the jets weren’t even ahead of a patriots team without Tom Brady... the patriots finished 11-5 and missed out on tiebreakers with Baltimore, Indy, and Miami
2016 Vikings and 2017 Chiefs were too similar. Both started 5-0 before both falling to 6-6. The Chiefs ended up winning their final 4 games to make the playoffs, but Vikings finished 8-8 and missed the playoffs. The Chiefs first two wins of that season were over both teams who would eventually make the Super Bowl.
Owens wasn't really crying at all. He wore the sunglasses on purpose (something he never did any other time). It's so obviously fake, it amazes me how many people this clip still fools. He doesn't even sound like he's crying. He sounds like he's making fun of someone crying! Even at the time, I couldn't believe it fooled anyone.
Add 2022 Jets. Jets were 7-4 and poised for a playoff spot. The Vikings game sent the Jets to a total collapse. Jets finish the season 7-10 after 6 straight losses
You put the 2008 Cowboys and Jets here, but not the 2008 Bucs. They started 9-3, but finished 9-7 to miss the playoffs. Tampa Bay even lost at home in Week 17, too.
Another collapse from that year was the Broncos, they were 8-5 with 3 games left to go and needed one more win to clinch the AFC West and then they lose 3 in a row including a win or go home against the Chargers in the last game of the year for the division, and that cost Mike Shanahan his job
Where are my 2007 Detroit Lions? They started 6-2. Then, not only did they go 1-7 the rest of that season, but it was merely the start of a putrid *5-47* stretch that didn't end until late 2010!
2023 Eagles now join the ranks. Edit: I know technically they wouldn’t qualify as they did make the playoffs, but I don’t think that makes it any less epic of a collapse.
2019 Pats: Started 8-0, started by destroying teams on defense and special teams, could outscore teams with non-offensive points removed. And then one fateful day the Ravens crushed the historic defense and the Pats ended the season 4-4, and losing the #2 playoff seed to the future SB champ cheifs in a home-loss to the 4-11 Dolphins that had started the season tanking. They then capped it off by losing in the playoffs in the first round to the #6 seed 9-7 Titans, with Tom Brady's last throw a pick-six and him becoming a free agent and leaving New England. It was a pretty ugly and sharp turn they took in late October to early November.
Wow, that small blurb from the interview from Mike Tice really shows the kind of person he is or rather coach. I would have hated playing for a guy with such mannerisms and creeds.
15:40 Pretty apt description of that team throughout my lifetime. I was 9 months old when they won Super Bowl XXVI so most of my memories are of some of the most listless choke jobs imaginable.
The 1999 Patriots Pete Carroll’s final year as the coach New England starts the year 6-2 only to finish the season 8-8 & misses the playoffs for the first time since 1995 Despite having pro bowl caliber players on the team that made the playoffs in 1996,97, 98 AFC Pro Bowl Pats Drew Bledsoe at Quarterback Lawyer Milloy at strong safety Ty Law at Cornerback Bruce Armstrong at offensive tackle
How about the 2008 Buccaneers? 9-3 entering week 13, finished 9-7 and missed the playoffs. This began a 13 year playoff drought, during which bad decisions and low effort seemed be the goal.
True which was sad for them how many QB’s they went through (Freeman, Johnson, McCown, Glennon, Fitzpatrick, Winston) before they landed Tom Brady and won a super bowl
The Bucs were irrelevant for a longgg time, but it's the cycle of life in the NFL, one day the chiefs won't have Andy Reid or Patrick Mahomes and they will be where the Patriots are...
If this list was ever remade, you can add the 23 Jaguars to this list. They started 8-3 only to finish 9-8 and not only miss the playoffs, but choke away the AFC South division to a rookie lead Texans. The worst part? They stole the AFC South last year from a Titans team that started 7-3, then choked in similar fashion.
I don't really know which one would be worse (the '23 Jags at least finished with a winning record while the '22 Titans had double-digit losses), but I will say that Tennessee last year never looked like a serious threat to do damage even at the best of times, and also cemented their collapse with a loss with a backup QB to a Jags team ironically capping off an all-time late-season comeback, even if it was pretty close. Meanwhile the Jags were legit in the #1 seed for a bit only to fall apart and cement their collapse with a loss to a crappy Titans team. Doubt it makes either fanbase feel better though that both times, the team that swooped in to steal the division had a top 2 draft pick the year before.
Best of the Rest 2009 New York Giants started 5-0 finished 8-8 1995 Oakland Raiders started 8-2 finished 8-8 1995 St.Louis Rams started 5-1 finished 7-9 1996 Houston Oilers started 5-2 finished 8-8 1998 Pittsburgh Steelers started 7-4 finished 7-9 1999 New England Patriots started 6-2 finished 8-8 2002 San Diego Chargers started 6-1 finished 8-8
@@kevinpayton2664 Team with both Walker and Dorsett losing a pivotal game against Giants who went 7-2 and won the SB after beating Dallas who went 6-3 and fell apart afterwards. The game was essentially the end of the Tom Landry Era
Philly is very injury-prone, so I think they will still make it. I actually think both Philly and Dallas will lose in week 15 and Dallas makes the playoffs at 7-9.
As a life long Cowboys fan, I'll tell you why they can't be on this list. They were never a good team at any point this season after their 3-0 start. Those 3 games were against teams with records, as of week 16, 11-34. Their wins were vs terrible teams. Jason Garrett should have been fired a long time ago.
2013 Chiefs should be in an updated list. 9-0 start, they then lose EVERY SINGLE divisional game except @Raiders, and blow a 38-10 lead in the wildcard round to Indianapolis to be a one and done playoff team after an 11-5 season.
That defense did Alex Smith dirty in the Indy game..... The guy is BALLIN OUT, gets you almost 40 POINTS..... and you can't protect that...…. pathetic..
GwresYnKernow This list is for the teams who started good in the regular season and somehow end up missing the playoffs. So I disagree with 2013 Chiefs being here.
I'd say 2014 Chiefs. They started 7-3, beat both New England and Seattle which was in the Superbowl that year, then lost to the 0-10 Raiders and went 2-4 in the last 6 games and missed the playoffs.
This list could definitely use an update. The last 5 years alone have given us a few doozy's; the 2018 Panthers and Steelers, 2021 Ravens, 2022 Titans.
I remember that one. Fitzpatrick got the big contract and the next game he broke his ribs and was never the same after that. Something like four intercepections the first seven games and 13 the next nine.
@@paulr.6993 Yup I remember that. Or he would lose all season and then start winning when it no longer counted anymore and cost us a really high draft pick. That was why Buffalo missed the playoffs for so many years. They would win 6, 7, or 8 games every single year. Never enough.to make the playoffs but too many where they would end up with like the 12th or 13th pick and whiff on those picks most of the time too. Guys like Leodis McKelvin, Roscoe Parrish, JP Losman and many other terrible picks. So glad Ralph Wilson isn't in charge anymore. Beane and McDermott seem to know what they're doing
That final game of the 08 season for the eagles was probably my favorite Dallas whooping of all time. I've never laughed harder at Dallas than during that game. Dallas would get revenge in 09 but for that moment it had to be the most demoralizing loss to Philly for them.
