I'll give Sniffles this: Him getting smashed by a Monstar was one of the funniest moments in Space Jam.

People say that Space Jam didn't get who the Looney Tunes are, but I absolutely disagree with that. Not only does Sniffles have a cameo, but the joke is about how saccharine and obnoxious he is; only the nerdiest of Looney Tunes nerds would write that joke 😆

The Sniffles cartoons aren't THAT bad, especially the final 3 cartoons where Jones, having made funny cartoons, turned Sniffles from a sweet-and-innocent character to a talkative annoyance. (That was even the version that was seen in Space Jam) Also, with a few exceptions, Chuck Jones's early LT cartoons weren't THAT bad, in general. Also, the reason why people say Space Jam doesn't get the LT characters is that the LTs do things that are out-of-character. Bugs Bunny has defeated many villains, tiny or gigantic, by himself. Yet in SJ, Bugs enlists Michael Jordan and the LT characters to get rid of a bunch of aliens. The LTs, in general, can make explosives and giant mallets appear out of thin air, Elmer Fudd is a hunter and Yosemite Sam & Marvin the Martian have a bunch of guns and rayguns respectively. And yet in Space Jam, the LTs' plan is to go crying to MJ to defeat a bunch of aliens in a basketball game.

Pepe LePew was popular for various reasons that no longer apply as much today: 1. He was a parody of several once-famous film stars like Mischa Auer and Charles Boyer and Maurice Chevalier who were themselves parodies of the French lover stereotype. 2. He was a starcrossed lover. He thought that cat was a skunk. He would have wowed a lady skunk. 3. He was a skunk. He smelled bad (to a non skunk.) Hence Le "Pewww." The joke was how clueless he was all but how.optimistic he remained. The real burning issue is why was bunny drag so beloved then and so scary to modern Republicans now? Looney Tunes indeed.

One thing I will say in response to Pepe being 'outdated' is it's never shown that the cat dislikes the romance; but specifically is running from the terrible smell. Pepe seems like a genuinely nice, maybe even desirable; but he's screwed over by a fault outside his control. Heck, a few times the script got flipped, where the cat became smelly, and Pepe de-scented, and the roles immediately reversed with the cat chasing him and him running from the smell. They definitely could do a bit more with Pepe though than the same old gag.

It doesn't help that in order to get Penelope to get out of the glass case she was hiding to get away from pepe, pepe le pew decides to pull a gun and walk off. Combine that with his constant chasing and kissing on her when she's pushing him away is kinda creepy. It doesn't matter if it's the stink or not. Also not helping matters is that he did try to get with Sylvester once despite having a family. Granted it was a one time thing, but it doesn't make pepe look any better to be a cheating hubby as well.

Another good example of Pepe done right, without going too over the top with the romantic stuff, was in The Looney Tunes Show. Not going to the chasing down levels, but still being charming to Lola Bunny, the crazed love interest of Bugs, while fitting with the country club setting. And even funnier, when Bugs tries to fake a wedding to deny Lola, she denies Bugs for Pepe.
@plucas1
@plucas1 Год назад
The way to salvage Pepe Lepew is to make him more like Johnny Bravo, where he's desperate for romance, but gets continually shot down every time by every female he tries it with. But instead of Johnny's toxic macho swagger, you could have Pepe be more of a walking bundle of romance fiction cliches of what he thinks women want, but always gets it badly wrong. And of course have him completely unaware that he smells. You could also go back to the first Pepe cartoon, where he had a wife in a clearly loveless marriage, and you could have him be obsessed with fantasy romance as a way to escape his hellish real-life one.
@Petrico94
@Petrico94 Год назад
Johnny is toxic and it's fun to see him get abused. Pepe I see as like Daffy where people try to punish or smash him but he always slips away and keeps trying. I don't know if you could have a self confident black cat who isn't taking any of his advances and keeps him at arms length but it's an interesting study where Johnny is mostly just (not) complained about for the same reason he gets karmatic punishment in his cartoons.

Jonny isn't toxic. Literally every female in his universe is an intersectional feminist. They don't rebuff his affections, they rebuff his personal comfort. The inconsistencies lay in the types of women who behave this way in the cartoons look like. Real tweeter Karen's aren't usually pretty and are almost NEVER skinny like on the show. Johnny is criminalized for his tastes. It's like he says, "Often people aren't looking for love, they're looking for help!".
@jbwarner8626
@jbwarner8626 Год назад
It's entertaining when Pepe fails, or when his expectations get turned around on him and he becomes the reluctant pursued party. But his later cartoons where he wins and the audience is supposed to like him? Those just come off as creepy. He's got the cat cornered, the cartoon irises out, and you just go "Um... now what? 😧" I think the problem was that Chuck Jones, obsessed with character motivation like he was, felt too close to the character after a time. He said in interviews that Pepe was a mix of actor Charles Boyer and memories of his own awkward failures with girls in high school; it feels like Jones eventually let the latter overtake the former and turned Pepe into this wish fulfillment lothario who never lost confidence in the face of rejection and always got what he wanted. That's really not the best angle for a character like this.
@johnmartin4119
@johnmartin4119 Год назад
I think the fact that Tweety is a jerk is part of what makes him so funny to people. It's the contrast of the idea that cute looking means the character is innocent, when the reality is sometimes the opposite. We actually see the same thing with characters like Darla Dimple from Cats Don't Dance or Sussie from Phineas and Ferb or to an extent Gideon from Gravity Falls, we laugh at they're cute personas being contrasted by the reality they're sadistic jerks and it's a welcomed contrast to characters that look cute and are nice

10. Hippety Hop really only existed for a joke to give Sylvester an opponent that was bigger then him so he could get his just desserts for always picking on smaller opponents. It puts him in an uno reverse situation; and did have some funny moments, but it does overstay it's welcome I will admit. 9. A lot of the early cast I feel struggled quite a bit. Much like how Happy Rabbit almost feels completely different from how Bugs Bunny is now; Porky's first incarnation really hurt his character; but luckily, both got better in time, and as a result, they are fine now. 8. Sniffles is just a Diet Disney parody. Which is why most reminders of him now, are just there for him to comedically get hurt. 7. YEAH, other then introducing us to "Smile darn ya, Smile" it's clear that Foxy was just trying to be Mickey Mouse. 6. Kinda sad to see this, as the Mice episodes prove that Claude Cat could work, when utilized properly. The episodes that do it wrong, have him appear as just a bully; but the episodes that do it right, show that he's paranoid; always imagining the worst outcome, causing him to be slightly neurotic in behavior. The episodes that show him this way, put him in a situation where he is the villain, yes; but you also kinda sympathize with him, since he could likely solve his problems by thinking rationally. 5. This one I struggled with. I get that Pepe le Pew is one note, and I understand that society has changed and that type of behavior most certainly is not tolerated (hell it wasn't even really back then; it's always been weird). But the thing is... Pepe le Pew IS always in the wrong, but people act like his episodes encourage that kind of behavior, while missing that he was always meant to be an antagonist; which is why every episode involves him causing problems for an innocent, and being captured or given a taste of his own medicine by the end. He's meant to be like Daffy; only instead of Greed being his downfall; it's undesired affection. But still, I can understand why some people don't like his cartoons anymore. 4. W7 Cartoons really were weird... I enjoyed some of the really low budget Road Runner and Daffy cartoons, but I'm glad I missed some of these 'new' toons. It seems to me, they were just trying to rip off Hanna-Barbera's stuff, poorly I might add; as some of those cartoons like Huckleberry Hound actually still have some great moments. 3. I think the main issue with Tweety; is Tweety himself is one note. He's cute, and that's the joke. It was funny in the past, when the cute was overlapped with how hilariously aggressive he was; but now, Tweety just kinda sits around, and begs for help; while Sylvester has to work around how to catch him, as he's protected by another character. So instead of being Tweety outsmarting Sylvester; it's Tweety being puppyguarded by Character X (Sometimes Granny, sometimes Spike, etc), and Sylvester trying to outsmart them, so he can outsmart Tweety... so it's basically a 2 against 1 situation; which isn't really funny. Interestingly, the episodes where Tweety DOES have to outwit Sylvester alone, end up being the funny ones, because often Sylvester loses due to his own faults. 2. Always felt like an annoying character of the week to me. He has some clever puns, but otherwise, never was too funny. Honorable Mention: YES... I remember seeing this episode when I was younger, on a VHS tape... it's just Elmer Fudd as a racist stereotype... not ideal. Best left in the past, and have us LEARN from this type of discrimination and behavior. It wasn't okay then, and it's certainly not okay now. 1. Wow... I learned of a new character; and now wish I didn't know about them lol

Charlie Dog and Claude Cat should have been each other's foils. Also I always felt bad for Claude Cat, he was always being forced to live with new pets, and it was clear that the family doted on the new pets and ignored Claude and he just wanted his family to love him and as a cat only knows malice. Pairing him with Charlie still has the same conflict except now positions him as more of a protagonist protecting his family against a con artist.

I always found Pepe Le Pew funny with the joke being that he thinks that he is a charming ladies man. But in reality he is actually quite repulsive. It's funny because he doesn't realise this. The ignorance of many Looney Tunes characters is often what makes them entertaining. I never once looked at Pepe & thought to imitate his behaviour. He also has a sarcastic dry humour which he uses in specific moments which work perfectly. In terms of perversion, he rarely goes too far in these (I mean obviously, the show is late 2010s-early 2020s), and honestly the dynamic gives a Ladybug-Cat Noire duo vibe, but playing it slightly riskier. Pepe Le Pew had some decent divirsity in The Looney Tunes Show, despite being a minor character in that show. He was a wedding planner employed by the Country Club Lola's family are members of, he was one of the characters Daffy sent a hate email to, and he was part of the therapy group that Sam took Daffy to. Tweety also had decent character development in TLTS, working with Sylvester so they can both get away from Taz. The two of them even teamed up with Taz when the three of them got lost so they could all return home. He was revealed to have been a messenger bird in WWII, and he whispered his gender in Sylvester's ear, with Sylvester's only response being, "I was wrong." And Tweety went to therapy where he relized that he wants to be chased by Sylvester because it's fun for him. This might not be enough to make them good characters, but it's a slight improvement.

10: Compared to Tweety and Speedy, why would we need Hippety Hopper? 9: To quote the first Bill and Ted film, he gets better. 8: Give me Fievel any day. 7: Give me Sniffles any day. At least he only copied the idea of a Disney short. 6: Is it wrong for me to say every Golden Age character Claude has come across is basically too obscure to recognize? Yes, even Marc Antony and Pussyfoot? 5: Something tells me this half is where the turds start multiplying like film strips. Ergo, worse than rabbits. 4: If there was ever a need for a tie in this list, this would have been that tie. However, I'd place Cool Cat as the worst because of how his standalone career ended, which gives him the most longevity in an ironic sense. 3: Okay. Not even Pepe is as recognizable as Tweety is, which brings to mind the controversial aspect of your promotion for this list. 2: It's bad enough he makes Porky repeatedly go insane at the end of every appearance from the two together. But after hearing his case, I can also see why dogs aren't given their days at Termite Terrace very often. Honorable Mention: Oh, no. Not that. Not the Censored Eleven. NOT THE CENSORED ELEVEN! 1: Where to start with bashing this guy? For one, even Foxy is a better Mickey ripoff than Buddy, thanks to Smile, Darn Ya Smile being in one of Foxy's cartoons. For two, we have better human characters from Fleischer Studios, meaning that if you want Buddy done right, just watch a Popeye or Betty Boop cartoon instead. For three, I actually thought Speedy Gonzales was going to take this spot,, until I realized that you said even fans hate him, and fans do not hate Speedy. For four, knowing how bad the Looney Tunes staff were treated by the executives on and off again for almost 95 years, it makes Buddy's lack of an impact hurt even worse for that era of the library.

10. I may check out those other Hippety Hopper cartoons that didn't follow the 'mistaken for giant mouse' schtick. Otherwise, this character was okay to me. 9. It's sad that Porky's first voice actor struggled with his performance in the earliest shorts. At least Mel Blanc was able to improve Porky's stuttering and made it more appealing. 8. I can see why "Space Jam" had one of the aliens smash Sniffles with a basketball. Speaking of Disney, the "Lilo & Stitch" tv show featured a parody of Sniffles through one of Jumba's experiments, with Rob Paulson using his Yakko voice for the character. Kind of funny seeing this come full circle in some way. 7. The fact that a clear Mickey Mouse knock-off got multiple shorts is very surprising. 6. Eh... I didn't care for this one. 5. Pepe can have his moments, but he was never among my favorite Looney Tunes characters. Maybe there is a way to revamp him for modern times, but we'll have to wait and see. 4. Haven't seen the W7 original characters, but just seeing the stiff animation is enough of a turnoff for me. At least stiff for Looney Tunes standards. 3. It probably depends on the short, but I can understand why Tweety isn't everyone's cup of tea. 2. Even as a dog person, I can't stand the idea of a character taking advantage of others like that. I guess Wile E. Coyote is the closest thing WB will have for a popular dog character since coyotes are technically canids. Honorable Mention: Yeah... there's nothing else that needs to be said. 1. Good thing I only saw Buddy in that "Animaniacs" episode.

I always liked it whenever they gave Sylvester a less antagonistic role and a more normal pet cat role like in that episode where he is Porky’s pet and he saves him from crazy, murderous mice in the creepy motel they stayed at. Being one of my favorite looney tunes, I’ve always wanted Sylvester to have more heroic roles like that motel episode. One of my least favorite one shot characters was that annoying little bird that kept trying to commit suicide by forcing a poor confused Sylvester to eat him. I hated that episode for being too disturbing and the fact children are allowed to watch it makes it even worse!

I think retooling Pepe could be one possible way to bring him back. Moving on from the actions he's associated with, while making him more interesting and less of a one-note character. In fact, New Looney Tunes already showed the potential in that. As he was retooled in that series as a James Bond parody. Another one is by redeeming him and actually learning about consent, something A New Legacy almost going to do with him.

Alot of WOKE/SJWs don't like him, forgetting that when he was created in 1945, Frenchmen were viewed as specifically stereotypical womanizing, Casanovas and the BIGGEST inside joke to why he's a Skunk is because there was a myth among American Women during WWII about "Frenchmen being Stanky and Smelly" its the SAME joke alluded to in Family Guy with its Rat Pack Song.

You know, there is a major major point that I think Animat missed. It's not about any one particular character, it's about almost ALL of them. Nearly all of their personalities are based on one dimensional stereotypes, especially ethnic ones. Pepe LePew was obviously French, Speedy Gonzalez was Hispanic, Foghorn Leghorn was Southern, Yosemite Sam was Texan, Bugs had a New York accent, while Daffy, Sylvester, Porky and Elmer Fudd were all given speech impediments and were often the dumb comedic foil. Only the ones that didn't talk, like Wylie Coyote and Road Runner, didn't rely on a stereotype for their personality, relying instead on visual gags. I'm not complaining about it, though I do believe that nobody could make an animated character that way today without some backlash.

Frank Tashlin introduced Petunia in Porky’s Romance in 1937, and she only appeared in 5 black and white shorts. Interestingly she was meant to appear in Porky’s Party alongside the nearly forgotten character Gabby Goat, but both of them were cut in favor of one offs Goosey and a unnamed Penguin.

If I had to pick my least favorite one off character from the Looney Tunes, it would be that salesman from "Jungle Jitters", which is another cartoon from the Censored 11. Like of course we all laugh at Wile or Sylvester getting crushed by anvils, but if we look into it deeper, we're laughing at some guys going through pain and torment just to get something to eat.

I agree with your list for the most part. Especially Tweety. I never liked Tweety and for the reasons you mentioned. As far as Buddy, I can't recall ever seeing a buddy cartoon. He's that forgettable.

For me, Tweety Pie was one of their funniest characters! I think I had to be older before I really got the joke: Tweety is a pint-sized, mean spirited little bully who always gets away with it because she's so cute! She really was dithpicable! We rooted for her because Sylvester was trying to EAT her; she was a proxy for what we'd like to do to our bullies!

I agree with a lot of the listed characters here. Pepe is understandably a weird one for obvious reasons. I do however like Tweety in some manner though. Though I do see your point on Clampett’s and Freleng’s take on the character.

It’s a shame Tweety is on the list as 2022 is apparently the year of him. Well, at least it was interesting to see him as the plot twist antagonist in Taz Wanted. :P

Tweety's main redeeming quality is the good voice acting and unique voice, but Sylvester is always the real star of those two. I think Sylvester is easily a top 10 Looney Tunes character. He shows a lot of versatility too. Great thing is that he and Wile E Coyote are very different despite having similar plans: Trying to eat a bird. But Roadrunner is not mean spirited, Wile E Coyote mainly causes his own harm. Roadrunner does not claim any moral high ground either or anything. He's just always happy and just a funny animal surviving in the wild. I'd still rank Wile E Coyote above him, but only slightly. They are an iconic duo way more than Tweety and Sylvester, because the dynamic just works better. Tweety has kind of the same problem as Jerry from Tom and Jerry, often being a jerk that makes you want to see the cat win. If I had to make a top 10 best Looney Tunes characters, it would probably be this: 1. Daffy Duck (Especially when not playing second fiddle to Bugs.) 2. Bugs Bunny 3. Porky Pig (He's the best straight man once past those earliest cartoons.) 4. Wiley E Coyote 5. Speedy Gonzales 6. Sylvester 7. Roadrunner 8. Elmer Fudd 9. Yosemite Sam 10. Foghorn Leghorn I especially love the Daffy Duck pairings with Porky Pig, the perfect combination of straight man and crazy guy. Bugs Bunny is great but I like him best when he does not always win, which always happens with Daffy, it gets too predictable. Being the most popular two characters does not mean they pair the best together. Both work better when not being the foil and having someone to work off of.

Even as a little kid, I wanted Sylvester to end Tweety. I felt sorry for Wile E., but I didn't want him to actually hurt the Road Runner.

#justiceforpepe I am french, and for me, pepe was the funniest character. The true French romantic cliché 😂😂

And based directly on Maurice Chevalier, who played romantic leads when he was young. They even used his face!
