Definitely a few I'd replace on this list with others, but to each their own. My favorites are still LNOE, Dawn of the Zeds, and Dead of Winter/Long Night. I don't care what ya say Tom, we need more zombie games!!
Glad to see some appreciation for City of Horror! I'd have added Last Night on Earth, Zombies!!!, Zombie 15' and Dawn of the Zeds. They are all good fun in their own way.
You won't see many defenders of Zombies!!! at the Dice Tower. It's essentially luck-driven (dice rolling) and roll-and-move. But, eh... we get a lot of fun out of it. More reviewers should consider the "FUN" element, and not so much how light/heavy a game is. I've never had a game of Zombies go bad. But I've had plenty of other games go flat.
Wes Ray , I agree it's a simple game with lots of luck, but messing with people is so fun! It really comes down to the group you're playing with, as with most games. But I enjoy how most of the reviewers stick with their personal opinions. It's just our personal opinions are much better.
Zombies is an excellent budget game so it's a good recommend in terms of theme it's basic but I've never met anyone who has hated it. Dead of winter is a worthy number 1 but it is essential you have people who understand the mechanics of the game particular the crossroads cards or it can fall flat on its arse.
Glad to see it's getting some love. I considered getting a while ago because it looked really cool (and was pretty cheap), but the bad reviews made me reconsider. I'll have to take a look at it again.
just bought dead of winter a couple days ago and it's supposed to arrive tomorrow! was hoping that it would be on this list as I've heard so many good things about it. can't wait to play!
I agree completely, Dead of Winter is by far the best zombie game. Like most zombie related media, the most interesting part is the effect the zombies have on a group of people and they way they deal with it.
My absolute favorite, which most gamers don't seem to like, is Zombie Survival. I like being able to play a solo game when no one can come over. I also like the planning aspects of it. #2 is Zombies!!!, and then Last Night on Earth.
Really happy to see Earth Reborn on a list. It really is a great game. My top 5 would be: 1. Earth Reborn 2. Dead of Winter: A Crossroads Game 3. Zombicide: Black Plague 4. City of Horror 5. Last Night on Earth: The Zombie Game
Totally agree with Dead Of Winter being #1. Zombie Dice was one of the first games I ever bought. Always a good intro game to bring out or just pass the time. I hope Carnival comes out as a reprint soon. Really hard to find that one :D
I think Martian Dice is better than Zombie dice, because of the theme, but then Martian Dice is also replaced by Dragon Slayer which Sam reviewed. Dead Panic, replaced by Star Trek Panic, again because of theme, but this is a Zombie list so... City of Horror: Because of Tom's review I bought the game. It is heavy in iconography, but is fun, I think Dead of Winter replaces it, but it's still pretty fun. I do see it on Zee's shelf still. Zombiecide Black Plague and Hit Z road have both interested me. Run, Fight, or Die, is a favorite of mine, it is my 11th favorite game of all time. Great game! Glad to see Tom still giving love to this game. Dead of Winter is my 25th favorite game.
Hit Z Road is merely okay, I find the melee mechanic a bit weird as you're rolling dice for each survivor but each dice has a chance to kill you. The production is good but it always seems like the game goes on a bit too long especially once you get to the really hard part of the deck. The resource management part is well done, if you've saved enough resources and not over bid most of the game you will have a good shot at winning but I find that in higher player counts you're having to bid more resources to not get screwed and the game doesn't quite give out enough as rewards to balance it out. I still have it in my collection and my play group really likes it but it's just not for me.
Yes, DotZ is easily the best Zombie Game out there Gameplay wise. But Tom never played it, especially because it is 'only' from VPG and was initially created as a solo-game. Ah, well. I forgive him!
I think it really depends on the people you are playing with? My first experience with Dead of Winter was not a good one due to the fact someone put personal objective above survival and kept on drawing survivor cards. We just about made it because there were 3 other more co-operative players. Not funny.
I own a copy with some of the expansions but it never gets played anymore. The problem is it hasn't aged well. Many other zombie games, even what some would consider mediocre, offer a better gaming experience.
Goya Solidar Maybe your group grew out of it because my family still enjoys it for what it is, a super cheeseball zombie game. Everyone I play it with loves it and I can't say that for Dead of Winter which is a far better gaming experience.
I'm glad you still enjoy it. The game was definitely fun for us for all the times that we spent playing it but, yes, unfortunately the love is gone. One of the reasons it has fallen out of favor in my group is the Munchkin-y aspect of the game, where everyone gangs up on the person about to win. (Munchkin is also something we don't play much either). The constant pullback tended to unnecessarily prolong many games, and I guess it became tiresome after a while. I tried spicing up the game with some house rules (unique characters, location bonuses, etc.) to re-spark interest but to no avail.
I wonder: if someone mentions a certain game in the comments, will tom delete the comment to save the surprise? Oh and Tom you are looking a little faded in the shirt 😉
Considering the very short list of games out there that contain spoilers, using the (spoilers) doesn't help much. I just started playing (spoilers) and was able to put 2 and 2 together. Might want to delete this comment.
In Tom's defense he was being honest about it and he did say it's not a horrible game. That said, I was surprised he doesn't like it. Maybe he should give it another shot on halloween when cheesy B-movie themes are totally appropriate. My family digs LNOE.
