It's crazy how rap producers can take all of these obscure, dusty vinyl and then find the smallest detail in the record, loop it, add some drums a new baseline, kicks, snares, 808 bass, keys and turn it into a whole new sound. Shout out to the original composers, I guess nothing is really better than the original because they had to come up with the music from scratch and played actual instruments. But a bigger shout out to the producers for bringing something fresh and new from their music and keeping their music alive with the sample credits which fattens the pockets of many artists keeping their lights on and food on their table.

Keep trying to tell folks sampling in the 1990s was an artform. Even when you don't recognize the original right away. There was such a diverse plethora of music to choose from. When we lost R&B/Rock music it changed hip-hop drastically.

No, no critics say it's stealing the works of others. A lot of the samples presented here are very straightforward but as you mine hip hops catalogue, hip hop producers used all sorts of music and were lovers of it. Reading credits to find producers / engineers so they could find other songs they worked on so that they could collage the perfect sounds into their creations. An artform that very few can do. Give a guitarist an SP1200 snd see if they can masterfully sample to create something.

I appreciate your insight. I have a question: what do you mean by "when we lost r&b/rock music it drastically changed hip hop?'
@Lilianamarie999
@Lilianamarie999 2 года назад
@@lisasimpson8003 the well to pull from has dried up or become so generic. While hip hop isn't beholden to sampling, there is a foundational element that seems to be missing. R&b/Rock&Roll are no longer the distinct and reigning genres they once were. The popularity of hip-hop has increased but so has the overall forgettable product being pushed for the most part. Focusing on beats primarily and less on melodic influences/lyricism. There are exceptions of course and evolution is inevitable. However I feel like a great deal of it is sounding like disposable noise of late.

Love this. As someone who got massively into this scene through the late 90's and into the 00's it saddens me now to see where it all ended up going. Finding these old tunes and making them into something so unique but yet keeping something of the atmosphere in which they were initially conceived but hard hitting was a true art. There was still so much variety and funk in all these hip hop/rap products it never felt like they were doing the original artists an injustice, much more enhancing their work. I miss that era.

As a lifelong fan of hip hop, and a producer with over 10,000 records in my collection, I knew quite a few of these already; but still, I love all the work you put into this video, to make it almost 20 minutes of sampling knowledge that can be thoroughly enjoyed by hip hop aficionados, and casual fans alike. 👍😁👍 For me, personally, it's always been about finding that one sample, and paying homage to the originator by reinventing and reintroducing their original creation to a brand new audience. For better, or worse, the original artist almost always poured their heart and soul into the music I often choose to sample, but for one reason, or another, never got decent enough exposure, and thus was lost to time. Many of the discoveries I select are found on albums featuring artists who are often hardly known, if at all. So many LP's that never sold, and subsequently never made the leap to cassette, and/or CD. It's both an honor, and a pleasure to listen to these gem-laced audio time capsules, and discover that one great sample. Even though I myself am certainly not known, even creating something new from their original blueprints, and perhaps maybe a thousand people in my lifetime might hear what I've done with it, is still enough for me to feel that in some small way, I'm keeping their music, once lost to time, alive. This is part of what makes hip hop so amazing! And this is also why I'll never switch to using synthesizers, or easy-to-use computer programs when making my music. Anyone can make music that way, and if you're one of those guys who produces instrumentals using those methods, then more power to you. But for me, sampling is what helps keep the heart of production beating, and the lifeblood of hip hop instrumentation flowing freely.👍😁👍

My guy! You speak soooo much truth. I really miss these days and how eclectic the samples were. Ah well. I write hip hop but it’s difficult to get real production I can feel in this era. I want to sample so much but I run into a roadblock of so many people telling me I’ll get sued or other reasons I shouldn’t sample but I just have so many 🔥🔥🔥 ideas because I came into my own lyrically in the great hip hop era. @@jaygee1616 well gee, thank you for that very original piece of insight. I too like a bit of Bach or Miles Davis with my wine and cheese on occasion. Seeing a lot of these "sample behind the beat" videos is a really good look on the mighty RZA. The way he was able to take small pieces of different records and make it into something cohesive, yet far from the original is truly remarkable and was lightyears ahead of the game. Thanks for the great video, I enjoyed it!

I couldn’t agree more! Starting with 36 Chambers RZA sampled Thelonious Monk to Otis Reading, The Jackson 5, Barbra Streisand, amongst many more. I loved West Coast Hip Hop, but my roots were in De La Soul, Tribe, EPMD, Eric B & Rakim, so it was nice to finally here some east cost gangster $hit with wordplay and comedic relief. #hiphopologist
