Top 13 BIGGEST WINNERS of TYBW, Ranked - Who are the BEST Characters of the Final Arc? (2024) 

After three years we're back with a new, more comprehensive look at who the very best characters of TYBW are! These are the real winners of the arc, the characters Kubo treated the best above all else - do you agree with my list? Who would make yours? If you're curious, the other two characters that ALMOST made the list were Quilge and Senjumaru - maybe next time! Let me know your thoughts!

For some reason I'm imagining Tommo going out on a romantic dinner with his wife at a restaurant and when the waiter asks him what he'll be having he responds with "Before I get started there will be spoilers for the Thousand Year Blood War arc in the order to come."

Mr Tommo is the best character in bleach's arc.

I'm surprised that there's no Nanao, not even in the honourable mentions. She helped take down the almost unkillable Lille Baro, stood up to Kenpachi and made him relent on what he wanted to do, became the VC of the 1st Division, created a seal that was able to keep a Quincy as strong as Jugram out, overcame her fear of battle and came out of the protective shadow that Kyoraku cast over her. Again really surprised she didn't make it.

I'm not even a Mayuri fan, but I feel like you can quite clearly argue for him being 1st. He is such an MVP in the arc and receives so much love from Kubo. He even has a scene where he tells off Yamamoto and leave him speechless. The only Soul Reaper we've ever seen do so.

In hindsight, Yama going down in the first invasion was a devastating loss. Imagine how differently things would’ve gone if he survived until they found out how to reverse the Bankai stealing.

Obviously the top winner in the TYBW arc was Nelliel. She got to pull the classic Tuxedo Mask meme Treatment of “Looks like my job here is done.” “But you didn’t do anything.”.

Mayuri will always stand out to me as the character that gained the most from the TYBW. He gets one of the best fights in the series, really great and surprisingly humanizing development and is seen both in-universe and by the fans as one of the most important individuals that allowed the Soul Reapers to win the war.

The biggest winner was Me/Ichigo when Orihime showed back up in her new outfit in the TYBW

I know you’ve already mentioned how Kubo does especially good in small pockets of the story writing wise like the First Invasion, TBTP, and Everything But The Rain, but it’d interesting if you did a whole video breaking down Kubo’s writing in that regard or even a ranking of the mini arcs. Or just arc rankings in general.

I wasn't expecting Uryu not to make this list, not even the honorable mentions. Still, a fun list, as always. :)

Aizen's role is way too underappreciated, TYBW deepens an already extremely deep character thats many people's no.1, besides that I want the losers 2024 too.

Zaraki is no doubt the MVP. He literally saved everybody by destroying Gremmy's meteor that would've killed all Shinigami and Quincy.

Oh my god I feel like Ichigo should be higher. The manga really done him dirty during the final arc and harmed his reputation. I really hope the rest of the tybw anime redeems him. I mean they did with that extension fight against the Bambis. But I want to see his actual bankai against Ywach in the final final fight. Or even give another extension of ichigo vs Ywach round 2, where we can see Ywach struggling a bit against base Ichigo to the point where was nearly forced to use the almighty. Both would be awesome.

I was eagerly waiting for Komamura to get a spot after he wasn't included in honourable mentions, I'm at top 5 and he still hasn't made an appearance.... damn, I guess Akon was a better character in TYBW afterall.

Grimmjow had so little screen time and yet got the killing blow against two sternritter. I’d say that’s pretty good even though I was really hoping to see him fight and maybe reveal a segunda etapa form.

Nanao and Sasakibe would be on the list for me. Sasakibe's character was elevated so much by this arc, making him by relative comparison a winner. Nanao actually gets quite a bit of development and really comes into her own in this arc.

I feel like Kenpachi and Shunsui should have switched rankings … I feel Shunsui made bigger moves.. tbh if it wasn’t for Shunsui asking the central 46 to have Unahonna teaching and fighting Kenpachi .. Kenpachi wouldnt be where he is

I think Nanao should have made the honorable mentions here, as she might not be that major a character, but she really did a TON in this arc for someone who is at best a tertiary character. But the person that I am astonished didn't make the list is Aizen. When you were talking about how obvious the number 1 spot was, I didn't even register than Ywach would have been on the list and assumed you were talking about Aizen and I was prepared to agree with you 😅 The TYBW arc recontextualizes everything Aizen has done up till now. It was always hinted that Aizen's reasons for what he did were more than just greed and ambition, and in learning about the history of the world, suddenly it all feels almost reasonable. And you wonder if maybe it was the right choice to stop Aizen from achieving his goals. As for what he does in this arc, he manages to get one over on Ywach while bound to his chair when they first meet. In fact he manages to flex so much authority in that chair that it's staggering. He 1-v-1s Ywach after absorbing the soul king and after being told the Almighty can see right through his hypnosis he proceeds to immediately prove to Ywach that he's absolutely wrong and is the only one in the whole arc to leave Evil God speechless. And during the epilogue, he has a full on moment of introspective dialogue where he shows that he understands nature of people and why Ywach was always wrong in his vision for the world. Ywach was a great villain, but he showed up, did terrible things, and then died. Aizen was made retroactively a better villain by the TYBW arc, and was two moves ahead of Ywach in every one of their encounters, only losing because of raw power. I absolutely think Aizen deserves that top spot, and probably wouldn't even put Ywach on my list.

i'm surprised Zangetsu didn't even get an honorable mention. he too went through so much character development. also, his presence did foreshadow the return of the Quincy King.

For me the biggest winner was Mayuri, he went from been a depicable character at the beginning of the soul society arc, to de most important character for the shinigami side of the war, even more helpful than urahara or zaraki

Kyoraku's personality didnt change it was just amplified I've always seen him as a dark character hiding behind a laid back attitude

I have a request! When you do your reactions for the next cour, can you make sure not to speed up the video or anything like that? I completely understand and respect why you mute it and make it harder to see, but I actually got the anime up on my screen so I could see your reaction while watching it myself and it didn’t work because the speed of one (I believe yours) outpaced mine. It’s just a small thing, but it would be super cool if you could take that into account for the future

I think the male Soul Reapers wielding female Zanpaktou have some of the best bankai, and you cant change my mind. As far as your list goes, I'm really surprised you put Mayuri over Kisuke, but I'm actually satisfied with that choice. I suppose I'm a little biased, but Mayuri really came out with huge character development, and a great, challenging fight that he hasnt had since his very first battle. I loved to see my favorite captain get so much love.

I agree that BazzB is a better villain than Grimmjow. He had one of the best intros in the series. Obliterating Kira with a burner finger 1 and then effortlessly killing 3 other seated officers was insane🔥🔥

Haschwalth had alot of potential but at the end of the day he felt like he was just a character with a cool design and vibe with little characterization.

Inb4 3 years later when Mr. Tommo makes the third version of this list with Chad at the top, with his new hybrid armor form and sick new fights against Yhwach in both the Warwelt and the Seireitei.

I thought you would've mentioned her narrative win, but for me, there's another aspect of Unohana that makes me consider her a winner: I've seen a lot of people by now talk about how she was a wasted character and died for Zaraki's sake, but I feel like they're not realizing (if not straight up ignoring) *her* reasons for dying being his hands. More than just being the proper way to become a Kenpachi, *it's her legacy.* She made the 11th Division what it was for Yamamoto, but the title of Kenpachi belonged to her; not just in the sense that Zaraki or his predecessors hadn't taken it from her, but it was something she had made herself. Many Bleach fans love the idea of the Kenpachi, so making Unohana it's narrative progenitor means it would never have existed without her. Whether this is the true reasoning or not, she wanted to leave her mark on (Soul) society; so when she found Zaraki as a kid, realizing his potential, she was shocked and elated. It's why her fight is one of my favorites in the series, because even when she loses and dies, she wins and will live on forever through Zaraki Kenpachi. There's a lot more reasons why I love this, what does this imply of her true allegiance to Soul Society (who deemed her a criminal for a time), what happened after she defeated young Zaraki, was she truly a changed woman who had to act the part for one last battle or was she concealing her true self behind a masquerade? Out of all the characters who we have yet to learn all their secrets from, Unohana is the one I am in unequivocal anticipation for.

Toshiro may not have impact throughout the arc but his role in the fight with Gerard imo is the best, he carried the fight tbh by not killing him, Byakuya and Zaraki damaged and that only made him stronger, Byakuya was the one who made him a colossal giant in the first place, Zaraki in bankai cut him in half but only made him grew bigger and stronger. While Toshiro, he at least were paying attention to Seiretei by not having debris falling down, cut Hoffnung in half, froze his shield. Hope the anime expands adult Toshiro vs Gerard, not necessary but maybe some additions would be nice.

Masaki looks like a mix of Orihime and Rangiku (especially TYBW arc with shorter hair). In some shots you see more of one and in some the other. Makes sense i guess. Both are extremely popular (for certain... reasons) and Rangiku has a close relationship with Isshin being his lieutenant and Orihime being Ichigo's friend and eventual wife.

You had a handful of individuals defeat enemies that the Zero Division could not, even though they were more powerful than the entire Gotei 13. That’s pretty amazing.

I feel like Nanao and Nemu should have gotten an honorable mention.

I think Aizen should have made the list. Though he wasn't around a lot, he stole the show every time he did. From his interactions in Muken, to his hado 90 saving the soul society and Yawach finding out hes under the affects of Kyoka Suigetsu. Every time appeared, it was impactful.

Good list, I agree with number 1 , he stood on business as the kids say. I would say he was somewhat heavily foreshadowed with OMZ ever since the Zaraki fight way back in Soul Society. I always thought OMZ was villainous or connected to villainy and was gonna be paid off and yeah when Yhwach showed up I was like yeah he's connected to OMZ

I hope they add some fight scenes or flashbacks to Bazz-B's story. So that his entire character arc feels more logical and complete. That would be awesome! ✨️

I wonder if we will get more details about Ichigo's full powers in the TYBW anime. Zangtsu, Katen Kyokotsu and Benihime , I find these three Zanpakuto very fascinating. Bankai Shuhe is also ok but I haven't read CFYOW so I dont know

I would truly love to see a biggest losers of the arc video! I have some very specific thoughts on that personally and I'd love to know yours.

When I look at Askin as a whole, with both his abilities, personality and relationships with others, I do think, that he was created to one day meet Kisuke and clash with him.

I would have included some characters in the list, uryu for his most participation in the anime, byakuya for his training in the royal palace, sajin komamura in the honourable mentions for his transformation, and lilttoto and giselle I consider were the most impactful female sternriter, they even survived the war, candice and meninas too but I feel they did not have such an impact on the story.

Kyoraku is like one of the oldest sibling who is capable to lead the youngers while another old siblings is sick (Ukitake)

They need to fix the Zaraki fights to the point of even changing the story. I was waiting for Aizen because for someone who was supposed to belong to the past of the plot, he sure had a big impact.

While zaraki got some really good character building with unohana and yachiru, he overall performance in the arc is pretty lackluster considering he only "won" 1 real fight and even that was the opponent basically killing themselves out of stupidity/ass-pull. Unohana didn't lose out of inability, but because she was turned into a anthropomorphized punching bag (or in this case would she be a pin cushion given swords...). She died because the story needed her to, not because zaraki was able to or even wanted to; he wasn't allowed to win until he needed a power up. Zaraki should have been 5 or earlier (13-5), while everyone else should've been shifted one position greater for what they actually achieved and were meaningfully capable of. Legitimately Kenpachi couldn't kill anything but literal fodder. 1. Llyod Yhwach: man handled 2. Unohana: she was a anthropomorphized punching back for the plot to "level up" zaraki, and worse yet one that even had to play nurse for him 3. Gremmy: the brain boy literally killed himself out of stupidity "I couldn't fathom your muscles Zaraki" 4. Pernida: made him a rag doll 5. Mayuri: "I've fallen and I can't get up" 6. Disney's Bambis: to be fair this was just shooting fish in a barrel 7. Gerard: Zaraki ended up pulling a Gremmy but now "Oh no I can't handle the muscles"

Curious what if. What if gin managed to escape with the hyogoku from Aizen in Karakura town?. Would ichigo still needed mugetsu? , would gin still die? Would Aizen have died because of no evolutions? . Mr tommo should do a what if series if he hasn't already

I know it’s not a big character but Uryu deserves at least an honorable mention. He also found out about himself and his lineage but without betraying his friends

Didn't we already know that Unahana was the first Kenpachi? Feel like I've known that since watching the original anime and this is literally the first vid on TYBW that I've allowed myself to see.

Orihime should have been here. She really went from a regular human girl to fighting against The Allmighty Yhwabach together with Ichigo and even being so important that Ichigo relied to her in order to power up in mid combat against Yhwabach. Also her wish that she always had since the start of the show which is to be useful to Ichigo has come true in the most epic way possible in this arc. Also she marries Ichigo and thats a win if you ask me.

Feels like Uryu probably deserves an honorable mention at least at this point considering what the anime is doing for him. I guess maybe you might be waiting for 1 more cour first, but I don't see why they'd stop now with the additions for his character.

Hitsugaya is the Goeti version of Worf from Star Trek...even in abridged they make a joke about that person being Chad but it's definitely Hitsugaya...every time they wanna show off how badass another character is, Hitsugaya is the target...sure he's strong and considered a prodigy...yet, that win to loss record kinda speaks for itself. Perhaps that's intentional...a lack of experience and youth...he even goes back to fundamental training because even he recognized its not his strength that lacks, it's his experience and demeanor.

I'd say Rukia is the biggest winner. One shotting an elite warrior that embodies fear itself and becoming a captain in the process. I'd even argue that she now has the most powerful ice Zanpakuto and one of the most powerful bankai. I honestly believe she could one shot Kenpachi.

No Yamamoto?? I respect the list, and I get he died in the first invasion, but as far as character development he came a long way and his death impacted the story and made things feel truly hopeless. Still love the video and mostly agree with the list tho!

Mayuri was definitely the unofficial 6th War Power of the TYBW. And if Hell really has been watching the Soul Society since the beginning, then they’d best be damn well prepared for Mayuri to catch them with their pants down.
