Gringos in Costa Rica complain about a lot of things, here are just a few of them. Living in a new country can be a difficult transition and many things take time to get used to. In this video we take a good hearted look at some of the things that drive gringos crazy, or at least find annoying. From a less than perfect electrical grid to barking dogs, Americans living in Costa Rica often find themselves frustrated with these unexpected additions to their lives.
The best advice comes from stoic philosopher Marcus Aurelius,
“Don’t be overheard complaining…Not even to yourself.”

This is my second visit to Costa Rica and my first time to Uvita. You nailed it on all of these. Adapt !!!!! When we were born and drew our first breath we were a human born into a State of Nature. Getting back to that basic idea makes you realize what a paradise this place is.

funny that people get upset at things getting stolen fro their car at the beach. That is an extremely common occurrence in coastal Oregon to the point where they feel the need to put up signs. So many of these things on your list is common place in my state. It's crazy that foreigners have such high expectations for these locations with the same crime/issues happening in their home country.

It would be useful to show the entrance to these roads from the highway and then take us on each road to the park.

So many of these come from unrealistic expectations that people have about moving and living in Costa Rica. Visiting CR as a tourist and living there are two different animals. A lot of the unrealistic expectations are sometimes set by fellow expats who have financial interests in real estate and selling others on the "Pura Vida" lifestyle. The vast majority of expats to CR end up returning to their native countries-that says a lot!

So true, and some of these people who have lived here a long time, still have that mentality. Good points👍

As a Costa Rican I have to say that some things you mention are things that you experience very locally and are not the norm in the rest of the country. Like dogs barking, and people working early. I am from Heredia, in my neighborhood there are many dogs and I never hear barking. All the owners take them out for a walk on their leash except for one neighbor who guesses, he is a gringo. The same thing with the issue of people working early, I don't understand it. Finally I have to say that the temperature of the country is not as hot as it can get in temperate countries in a summer. The record for the highest temperature in Costa Rica was recorded in 1964 when 43 C (109 F) was recorded in Puntarenas, which is already a hot place on the coast. And the record in San Jose in recent years was in 2010 when it reached 32C (89F). The rest seems coherent to me, prices of things, bureaucracy, etc.

Thank you very much for this informative message, this is the kind of feedback that I really like and a different perspective from a Tico. I definitely see some of your points and others would respectively disagree with, just from my point of view. I have been meaning to video about the Myths gringos have about Costa Rica and will include some of these points in that video. I have used the story of the blind men and the elephant to illustrate how different people have different perspective of Costa Rica, depending where they live, visit or explore and I think this is a good example of that. I try not to talk in absoulutes with this kind of discussion, but perhaps I have done that to an extent here. Since the video topic is things that Gringos complain about, and most gringos do tend to live or visit the warmer areas of Costa Rica that would be something to focus on. As far as the heat, 90 degrees in the Costa Rica sun here in Uvita with high humidity is brutal no matter how you slice it. We have that for a few months....every day. I am not claiming Uvita has the highest temperatures in the world, in my life I have experienced rare temps over 100F in upstate New York, but those were short lived maybe a couple of days. So having experienced both of these environments I can safely say that most people that come from the USA(with the exception of AZ,FL souther CA etc) will find Costa Rica very very very hot. So many come white and go home red or peeling from not using sun protection. I probably should mention the micro climates more and that will be something to include in the "Myths about Costa Rica" video. Thanks again for taking the time to give me your take on the topic.🙂👍

Well said, Ed. Thanks again for sharing this. It's so important. And indeed some people seem to have not done even the smallest piece of homework and research! And then all the problems start...

All very relative points. I’m closing in on my 2nd year here in CR, and I don’t know when it was but I started to not complain or question why things are like they are. It was more of a “it is what it is mindset”. Even Ticos question why certain things are they when they are, but you’ll rarely see a Tico angry about a certain delay in their personal business life like doing banking or getting medical care, pretty most anything for that matter. I think we foreigners frustrate them more than anything. 😏 If you thought about it, and did a role reversal with a Tico coming to live in your country of birth, you would most likely see similarities that would frustrate and confuse a Tico as well. I’m sure over time some of the issues like roads for instance will improve, but don’t count on it anytime soon.

Thanks Don, It is interesting to hear some of the conversations that go on, especially from new tourists in town this time of year and you know that well also.

The roads have gotten better over the years, but bad roads is one thing that I have heard Ticos complain about. They will tell you that it is because of corruption.
@CostaRicaStory
@CostaRicaStory 5 месяцев назад
Yes, that can be a problem, but the real culprit is the relentless rain on some of the more primitive roads. But as you say, which roads get attention can be a point of contention.

Thank you! ❤ I can do this! Except processed foods 😅 I need to work on that. You address the gentrification problem. I don't want to be part of that . I understand I will. But maybe I can offset with volunteering I don't know. I'm a rice and beans kinda girl with barking dogs of my own and noisy chickens. I really think I'm gonna be ok down there living. Working on my Spanish, that's hard It just falls out of my head.

I have had a place in Costa rica for 12 years. Perhaps do a video on what upsets Costa Ricans. Many Gringos move to Costa Rica and then use fellow gringos for all of their needs. If you aren't using locals for repairs etc. you are not allowing locals to benefit from you being there. If this is the case Locals will not like you.

Good point and there are a lot of talented Ticos with great skills. In Ojochal they are working on a directory to help people find Tico services.
