What few people know is that the Germans could not actually afford the rearmament of the 30s. But contrary to reality, it is repeatedly claimed that Germany was a superstate that was invincible. Because the German Nazi government has since the inception of power, from 1933, the public treasury overused (spent too much money, too little taken) and was therefore constantly on the brink of bankruptcy. The Germans attempted this bankruptcy by means of national debt and the plundering of the minorities of Gypsies, Poles and Jews, later abroad, through the occupation and plundering of foreign countries. But in the 30s above all t he Germans funded their military with completely indebtedness of Germany! The Germans financed their rearmament program above all on debt. The Germans could not afford that rearmament program and were therefore bankrupt in 1939. Just incidentally, Poland was not bankrupt in 1939 like Germany it was. The Germans have prepared for the war and the war should finance the war for the Germans! The enormous rearming was financed to a large extent through deficit spending, including MEFO bills. After assuming power in 1933, the National Socialists realized that rearming Germany would require funds that were not likely to be generated from taxes or public loans. In addition, the need to keep the rearmament effort secret led to the creation of dummy company. MEFO was the more common abbreviation for a dummy company set up by the Nazi German government to finance the German re-armament effort in the years prior to World War II. This dummy company was set up in May 1933 as a front for purchases from four German armament manufacturers, Krupp, Siemens, Gutehoffnungshütte, and Rheinmetall. Between 1934 and 1938, Mefo bills worth a total of 12 billion National Bank were issued to pay for rearmament. To put that into context, Germany's national debt in 1932, the year before Hitler took power, was only 10 billion Reichsmark. By 1938 the official admitted national debt was 19 billion Reichsmark -- but the Reichsmark 12 billion in Mefo bills has to be added on top of that. In other words, Hitler and the German Minister of Economics, Hjalmar Schacht, tripled Germany's national debt in just six years, but more than half of the increase was off the books. When the MEFO notes fell due in 1938, the government discovered a serious cash shortage. To resolve the problem, the Nazi regime employed “highly dubious methods” where “banks were forced to buy government bonds to be used to repay these bills, and the government took money from savings accounts and insurance companies. This made the ordinary German citizen the financier of the German rearmament. Eventually, the government had to resort to the printing press to help mitigate the cash shortage. This method of financing enabled the Nazi government to obtain large loans from the German National Bank which was prohibited under then existing statutes. Because actually direct lending to the Government by the National Bank had been limited by statute to 100 million National Bank. But the German Nazi government ignored this ban! Between 1933 and 1939, rearmament costs accounted for 60% of German government spending. The plan was to conquer other countries and use the booty from these countries to restructure the state finances.

That is only a fraction of America's budget, and it's bigger than the next 10 countries combined, because if someone invades America, chances are they're going to try and unite with others to do it. With a budget like this, it ensures America is never on the back foot, and they're not even geared up for a proper war, no draft etc. so just imagine this $600B, but on steroids.

Also the direct budget of NATO in 2018 was less then 2 billion dollars, so the even if the US paid the whole direct budget of NATO, which it did not, the remaining 954 billion dollars must have gone to the US military.

What you're possibly talking about is Saudi Arabia, and that was in the 1930's (Saudi Arabia is a country in the Middle East, and there are 17 other Middle Eastern countries).

Vietnam was won we had everything set up for a similar situation to korea when politicians decided to screw over the south Vietnam government. the taliban was pretty effectively wiped out but due to the way Afghanistan is the only way you can have peace in that area would be to wipe out every tribe in a way similar to what the US did to the Native Americans, that or turn the whole area into beaded glass.

I'm happy to have a strong alliance with all of Europe, given that our values are similar. But I disagree that it is a good thing for Europe to be dependent on the American government for protection. We could reduce our military spending, and pay for better things, such as healthcare and education. If Europe raised their military spending very slightly, and America reduced military spending by even just a third, then together we would still have the largest military force by a long shot.

Our state in in crippling debt and they continue to throw money away. Our local roads are cracked and broken, for example, because they prioritize stupid projects like the ridiculous bullet train that doesn't even work. While we were in serious drought and were being asked to conserve water like it was gold, while some towns were being ruined because they had no water, the government released millions of gallons of usable water into the ocean to save some endangered fish. They do not care about us, they do not put our needs ahead of their wants, and I do not trust them in any capacity. Power corrupts people and as much should be privatized as possible. Yes our healthcare system needs fixing or replacing, but a socialist method will absolutely make things worse. Australian here... i read somewhere that the US spends about 3% of its annual GDP like other nations do. It just so happens that the US's GDP is astronomical compared to other countries. people are just concentrating on the figures, yet not realizing where they come from.

rawkusrex it’s true that military expenditure is a little above 3 percent of GDP but it’s also 25 percent of all government expenditure which is crazy when compared to other nations
