This video shows the largest armies in the world from 1816 to 2020. Army size is based off of the number of active military personnel. Military personnel are defined as troops under the command of the national government, intended for use against foreign adversaries, and held ready for combat.

Technically Germany wasn’t a unified country until 1871. Prussia was really the militarily dominant Germanic State up until unification.

This type of graph is interesting to watch, but the rapidly changing scale following the leader obscures the buildups during the world wars. The graph would work better with a constant, or gradually increasing horizontal scale.

I think this graph combined the Union and Confederate Army sizes during the American Civil War period. If split in two the Union would get about 2/3 with the remaining 1/3 going to the Confederate Army. They'd both still show up on this graph as among the world's largest army for a short time.

FDR knew very well that he was forcing Japan to attack them by cutting them off from essential ressources like rubber and oil, and he wanted to help defeat the nazis from the very beginning even though the senate and the public opinion was against it. If he wasn't president in the 1930s and 40s, history may have looked different from what it does

By the numbers you can tell when wars, especially major wars were occurring, and oddly if these are accurate numbers, the numbers started increasing for some countries as if they expected a war was going to occur in the future

Someone sane. Nationists all over this comment section claiming that their army is the most powerful because it is so large. For example: The chinese constantly got s*** on(in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries) by European powers even while outnumbering them by a large margin.

Yeah, Czechoslovakia (14,8 mil. population in 1938) as another example. During peacetime in 1930s they had only about 150,000 troops, then in May 1938, after partial mobilization, 380,000 troops and after general mobilization in September 1938 even 1,250,000 men ready in arms. It is shame that Poland, France and UK didn't stand up against Hitler at the time.

The US didn't really poured tremendous money to the Military if they're at peace while France maintains it's astronomical amount of money to fund the military to control the unending wars and revolution all the way back in Charles the great's era. US may have the biggest budget since the entrance of 20th century we can't denied the fact that France is still on the top when we talk about historic military funds.

They setup a lot of defensive measures and regularly conscript young adults to serve for a few months. During wartime or high risk times they have the older population to come back. Not to mention during that cameo most of the other countries weren’t able to setup a military without being invaded. They know how to leverage their enemies though.

Try to see things in perspective. Quality over quantity. Certain countries demand every citizen to fight when in war. So automacially a 89 year old Ethiopian man with a blind eye, lepra and 1 amputated leg would get a stick in his hand and counted as military personnel..

Notice how during times of War, the United States army suddenly surged to the top or near the top? A little known fact. A lot of the reason why the French and British agreed to the November 1918 Armistice with Germany instead of going all the way to Berlin because they didn't want a massive American army in Europe. They ended up with just that after World War 2. Had WW1 lasted another year, the United States would've had the largest army on Earth.

It was more realistically 600,000 (1800s). Data wasn't collected accurately and troop figures propagandicised. the troops were spread very thin and the country was suspicible to rebellions/warlordism and banditry as a result well into the first 2 decades of the 20th century. Some of these warlords existed untill the 2nd phase (1945-49) of the chinese civil war

@@ICE-gm8jd That's just the earliest information we could find about that. They've had that large of an army for thousand of years. For example, they've once sent around at least 1 000 000 troops to invade Vietnam in the 1200s.
