Boise does have the Boise River running through it, which does get pretty busy. But not nearly as many lake options as North Idaho. Both are fantastic places to live but there’s a reason Boise is attracting so many more transplants over Cd’A.
Just say it Trent, you don’t want all us Californians coming to CDA!! 😂😂 and as a Californian, I don’t blame you! Idaho incoming ASAP… still deciding on North or South though!
I live in north Idaho but have visited Boise quite a bit. Boise is very clean and modern and probably more comfortable for most people. Especially younger working age people since there's more available shopping locations, jobs, and entertainment. Coeur D' Alene area is much closer to beautiful nature and when forest fires aren't going strong, much better air than Boise
One big perk of Boise for Cali transplants who still want to visit their native state is the much shorter drive time back to their old home. And the airport is closer; you don't have to drive to Spokane like you do in CDA. And despite a few "Idaho is Full", etc. window stickers (probably on vehicles of Cali transplants who moved up 5 years ago), there are lots of other transplants to help you feel at home. Crowding has definitely become an issue for Boise here recently. Driving through Boise these days reminds me of driving through the Sacramento metro area, complete with a sizeable minority of rude/aggressive drivers (most likely transplants). So I'll stay over in Twin Falls area... I'd have to agree that jobs in most fields are definitely a bit easier to come by in Southern and Southwest Idaho.
Appreciate your frankness Trent. You're plenty tactful, but not wasting a lot of time trying to be overly delicate, like so many of my fellow Californians feel like they must. Thanks for the excellent information.
It’s apples and oranges. Having lived in both places I’d choose CDA every time. Boise is far too progressive and the traffic sucks. Yes the nightlife and restaurants are a plus, but it’s too crowded. Spokane is a huge negative for CDA . We should consider building a wall. I just like the more conservative nature in North Idaho.
Yeah. You say you don't like Spokane and would live in CDA, but like he said you would need to go to Spokane for a lot of things. And that means dealing with the awful East I-90 traffic. So if you prefer conservative living... Boise would be better. You just have to deal with the traffic. People tend to work in Spokane as the wages and jobs are better. But then have to commute to CDA. Spokane has a bad rap. It is mainly because of bums and the fentynal problem. But it is in certain a areas. We have tons of lakes. Waterways, hiking trails, tons of entertainment options, pubs, distilleries, places to eat. Major hospitals, great transit system, great schools... Traffic is much better than Boise. But it sounds like a more conservative place is better for you. Trust me when I say we wish there was a wall too. The Northern Idaho population comes here all the time and is causing traffic problems and contributing to a shortage of doctors and medical specialists. So if you move there then stay there. Then don't complain if you need special cancer treatments or heart by-pass surgery as you won't get it in CDA. And don't come use our airport to fly anywhere. Because you don't have that in CDA. 😅
@@ilikecontent2327 I’ve lived in CDA for 15 years, I might go to Spokompton twice a year. They have nothing I really need, except an airport. When I lived in Boise it was apparent that a metro style merge was going to happen and the traffic was getting worse. Also the influx of more folks from woke States changed the general vibe. Nope, North Idaho for me.
@@michaelpond6386 I had a lovely little town until Californians and Seattleites/Portland people moved here and brought their bums and money and started changing it to fit their yuppy lifestyle and their cumbya be kind to the bums. It sucks! I will have to start wearing my 1985 t-shirt that says welcome to Washington now leave--it shows a moving van with California plates taking an exit that drops them into the Columbia river. Yeah we have similar issues. But no I do not like our town getting dumped on... In the 1970's-80's and before drunk and disorderly conduct was not tolerated. You got your ass thrown in jail and had to dry out and go through a program. Same if you were caught doing drugs. Now it is all hand holding and they run amuk with impunity. It truly sucks! Panhandling is illegal, but it does not stop them. If you think it won't happen in your town think again. Any city that grows big enough will eventually have trouble. We need to close the border period. And go back to being stricter on bums and drug/ alcohol use.
I was born and raised in Boise. 35 years...IM NEVER GOING BACK. North Idaho all day baby. Boise SUCKS! Overcrowded, lakes near there suck, smokey, desert, traffic...CDA and N idaho shouldnt be compared to Boise. Trust me
Seems like most city slickers might be better off renting in Boise first and getting acclimated to the cold weather, wilderness, a merit based society and freedom (even Boise likely more free than where a lot are coming from)
I get why the Boise area gets the Comifornia wrap, but some of the most conservative counties are outside Boise. Mainly farming areas. My wife and I decided on a nice town in between Boise and McCall. So we get the best of both worlds. We are retired so no commuting, and we go do things during the week. Camping ,skiing ,fishing, atving, anything outdoors. It all depends on your situation, family, working or retired. She grew up on a farm 50 minutes from Boise and went to Boise state, but we met in Ca. Getting out of that over the top liberal state took us awhile, but we planned it out and we love where we are now, even though the housing costs are basically close to Ca. Thanks Trent for all of your insight. Your videos have been very informative and we enjoy your take on Idaho .
The beauty of the areas that you video were really nice, We have a rental property in Meridian, We've never lived there. But I have been to Boise very nice and clean, Also, we've been To North Idaho It's very beautiful, but me being 65 in poor health i would need to be fairly close to a good hospital. We live in Arizona Right now And my wife would not move anywhere where it's cold it's just too hot in the summer time, Unfortunately my wife will not move anywhere where it's cold, I sure wish I would have made the move when I was younger and thand in better health !
also brother, if your planing on going to stanley or redfish, or just anything outside of boise its YEARS reserved. You must plan, and PAY for it. We would save up and plan years in advance to go to Redfish. Super frustrating. I can walk out my door in Hauser and enjoy the lake and in 15 min be in a city. Excellent video
This is a lot harder of a choice then I expected… Thank you for the insight between both areas. My wife and I are gonna visit both & decide where we want to live.
Kool vid. Love the channel. I'm not inclined to big cities, but you fairly addressed pivotal points. Thanks. And you and your son look about the same age, continue the good health! 😊
I moved to the northern most part of CDA last year. I don't drive and I get around just fine including in the winter. The bus system isn't great but with a little planning can be decent. There's also uber/lyft and there are just enough things within walking distance that I can get by.
Hi Trent, Wonderful video. Not being within walking distance of mountains in Boise is a big consideration. The mild winters would be a plus. Would you consider doing a video on the Pocatello Idaho area? What would be your finds and thoughts? How severe are the winters there? Thank you for all the hard work and passion you pour into your videos.
@@LivingLifeNorthIdaho Thank you for your reply. I get the impression Pocatello is within a day trip range of several towns and cities including Boise and Salt Lake City. I feel that it could be a great central location from which to base a business. Especially if I want to work with mostly conservative people. To live in Pocatello it may be neccessary to be winter tough. For that reason I dream of eventually of having a place in Cour d'Alene too. But first it would be neccessary to pay my dues :) These thoughts aren't etched in stone but seem to make sense for the moment.
You list the reasons I decided on the Boise area. I decided to settle near any services I will likely need as I get older. I decided to opt for convenience in a place that is still close to gorgeous spots.
Coeur d'Alene area is nice, but it's too crowded now. I lived in that area twice in the early 1970s. And it's a bit snowy in winter. I live 40 minutes easy drive, no traffic, away from Boise and it's peaceful. And Boise has two excellent medical centers. It's also getting crowded, but there are dozens of miles of open land to build on. It is the high plains desert, so it's not like northern Idaho.
I live in Post Falls. I have three CostCo's within an hour. With Boise's traffic it isn't any better there. The Boise metro area is just like Spokane but with less crime. :)
Its never bothered me to drive to where the wilderness is, especially since the Boise area is within an hour of it. So I guess its more so the weather acclimation, seeing as how were coming from Florida, we chose caldwell to stay out of the thick of the city and the higher prices. So hopefully we made the right choice! Sawtooth was incredible and felt like an easy weekend trip
Its how you said "I like to be remembered I am human, and not just some money generating robot" that really strikes on why i think so many people are moving further out and away, I believe that capitalism has reached its precipice, and a lot of people are just drained. It sucks that people think were just invading, but its part of this country and why were so free, to have limitless possibilities. Its not always about politics, but it seems i would be more welcomed in Idaho coming from Florida than California LOL. Especially if DeSantis becomes president..
They can keep anything south of Cascade. prefer the mountains and trees. Lived in Boise for a year, Green belt is nice and Flying Pie Pizzeria is great.
If it were just me I would likely live off the grid way up north. It's not just me though and given my families needs we need to be within walking distance to local shops and I don't want to be too far from a hospital either. I am cool with the snow but my family wants sun and warmth and minimal winter (think 1 month of that and 11 months of summer lol). I am mostly attracted to Idaho for the culture and conservative/freedom loving mindset of the people. Coming from a state where Seattle runs the whole show I won't consider anything on this side of the border. It's super important to me to get away from the blue coastal states. I don't think Boise is what we need and is probably too much like home. I want that small town atmosphere but I still want to be able to drive or even walk to what we need. North Idaho is perfect for me but we could do without the long winters. I am currently leaning towards Lewiston as it seems to mostly cover our needs while being more moderate climate wise AND the housing market appears to be more affordable than anything further north or south. I just don't know about the smell. We have a paper mill in Fife that creates the `aroma of Tacoma' it is so famous for. I don't look forward to that so the jury is still out on that area. Perhaps some other town or city in the greater Boise area would be a better fit but it seems that is all very expensive and it sounds like the traffic is an issue. I definitely want to be in a place with fewer people and less traffic, so growth is not attractive to me. Lastly, I want to retire soon (within a year hopefully) but intend to still earn a bit of money here and there. I don't have a career that allows me to work online from anywhere like so many of these transplants that can live in the mountains while still pulling in a 6 digit salary because their old office job was in Seattle or LA. Frankly it really burns me what they are doing to the RE market ruining it for the locals that earn an Idaho wage yet have a west coast price scheme on all housing. Californians did the same thing here in the Seattle area in the `90s. We call it Californication. Now it's spreading to Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, everything west of the Rockies. So my intended little comment turned into a lengthy rant but that's where I am at and I suspect many others are too. Thanks for being so honest and forthright. You are my favorite source for info like this.
My husband and I want to build a small homestead in the next couple of years (not full time homesteading). We enjoy the quiet but we can’t be off grid because my husband will still be working a regular job. I’m really just trying to figure out what would be a homestead friendly area in Idaho with job opportunities for a freight driver.
What he doesn’t tell you is that the Salmon River is not full of natural, native salmon. They stock it every year because settlers fished out all the salmon in the late 1800s. They began stocking it with salmon in the 1960s. Hard to call that world class.
Maybe, but not according to my search on www.fs.usda.gov/detail/scnf/landmanagement/resourcemanagement/?cid=stelprdb5304161#:~:text=Sockeye%20salmon%20are%20native%20to,and%20spawning%20areas%20near%20Stanley.
Depends on if you live there or not. If you don’t it’s Boyzee. If you live there it’s Boysee and a sacred oath to correct everyone that doesn’t say it right. 😆
Listen here you racist fock, it's because of the rainbow that allows us to bring colour to the world indeed(North Idaho is actually a place of love & care for those who can see & share it indeed despite adversity at times); slan go foill(bye for now) @@russellzigler2180 🌧🌈
@LivingLifeNorthIdaho there was the Ada County sherif shot and killed. Then they had the inmates who escaped and that guy shot or stabbed 2 sherrifs? In the last 2 months it seems a lot of Boise LEO have been attacked. Soft on crime liberal agenda.
