What Is Ambroxan? Ambroxan is a synthetic note discovered in the 1950s to replace the use of the very expensive note of Ambergris. Ambroxan is a long-lasting, very complex note on its own in fact it’s so complex there are a few fragrances out there that use the note on its own as a fragrance. More on that later. I find Ambroxan to have the characteristics of musk, amber, salt and woody notes all rolled into one. I find it quite choppy and course with the experience of wood shavings and do not find it as smooth as other synthetic notes like ISO E Super or Javanol. Ambroxan is typically used as a base note in fragrances.

My favorite uses of ambroxan are in Guerlain Ideal Cool / Percival / Luna Rosa Carbon - at least where it's a bit more of a standout note. I don't enjoy it as much when it's as dominant as it is in Sauvage although it's still ok.

I dont mind ambroxan if it's used as a fixing/carrying agent, if used tastefully it can really boost longevity and projection of a scent ie. Frederic Malle Promise 👍 I think ambroxan had gotten a bad wrap partially because of Sauvage, but I think many people are confused as to what ambroxan actually smells like because to me the ambroxan in sauvage wasn't the issue, the issue was the extremely sharp bergamot/pepper and metallic edge sauvage has. Thanks for the video I'm sure it will help many people.

What a great list! I do love this note, but only when it’s not over done. Your list definitely added a few others to my list that I want to try. The only one I was surprised you didn’t include was JPG Le Male Popeye Eau Fraiche, but I can also kind of understand why. There’s a lot of other things going on there but I think it’s a good example of Ambroxan that is balanced within the composition.

Great content! Love Ambroxan as a note!Another 13 is absolutely my favorite from Le Labo. I get a lot of mint or peppermint (don’t know why lol) but I can’t spray more than two sprays, or else it gets overwhelming and almost harsh. Also love the ambroxan in BR540 💕 will absolutely try the others on your list!

Great idea for video. Yesterday, I bought MFK Baccarat Rouge 540 edp. What has drawn me to it was ambergris(I also think it is ambroxan). I also think there is abroxan in Creed Aventus, not so much ambergris. I might be wrong.

I bought some pure Ambroxan from the high end supplier Givaudan. Amazing. Smells like I remember the real deal as, I put in Perfumers alcohol at 3%. Is so magical! Smells like the color Sky Blue! I ordered Iso e super and Velvet Cashmere both from IFF...

I recently got a decant of Montale's So Amber. It features a prominent rose note combined with ambroxan, so it's a salty rose, which is a great combination. It claims to feature ambergris, but I'm pretty sure it's actually ambroxan. Montale's Aoud Forest (very misleading name) does the same thing, but also throws in citruses and aquatic notes. So yeah, I love ambroxan and it's great combined with roses! I'll just get a nice rose fragrance and combine it with my Molecule 02.

I have always been drawn to scents with ambroxan in them. It gives that earthy punch that I crave. Terrible Teddy makes me feel really heavy with ambroxide. I have to be in a very specific dapper mood to wear that one. Cheers!

Well, I use to be a strong abvocate of natural smelling woody, green, soily and leathery fragrances, but ambroxane seems to be kind of a week ess of me. ;-) The only artificial note that manages to hypnotize me, especially in combination with patchouly and peppers. So Sauvage is just a magical potion to me.

I would look at citrus fragrance that already feature Ambroxan and then I would add to it. So spray the M02 first then the citrus on top.

I really struggle to distinguish ISO E Super and Ambroxan. I LOVE fragrances with them in it. For eg: I can tell that D&G Light Blue women, Black XS, Goldfield and Banks Wood Infusion contain one of the molecules. But I can't tell which one! Does anyone know?

All day Sebastian! I have always loved perfume. My mom’s Shalimar...back in the 60’s when it was PURE DELIGHT(probably why I lean towards Tonka...Vanilla today I was about 8yrs old and I would put on her ShalimarI thought...but she knew) I didn’t put the top on good...my mom’s under garments and dresser smelled Of Shalimar, for the life of that dresser drawer🙈🙈🙈😂

Ambroxan should be f ing banned in perfumery, lol. It's such a harsh, chemical-smelly mess of a substance. It should only be used in tiny amounts to help other compounds out because when used like Sauvage it's almost asthma-inducing and I don't have asthma. Ambroxan has ruined otherwise great fragrances like Greenley from Parfums de Marly. Some light musk and some Iso E/rosewood base and it would have been so beautiful. Now it is un-wearable to me. Can't wait for this fad to die.

I always thought it smelled like a manufacturing plant chemical waste land for a long time but I’m obsessed with the smell now. I figured as it happens with everything, most scents, most notes that I’m not used to notes I don’t like then it grows on you and it might happen to you too but either way they’re not getting rid of Ambroxan it’s here to stay because it’s used as an alternative to ambergris, which is very very expensive.
