You know what the saddest thing is, Disney did actually had high hops for more Treasure Planet projects with a TV series and a sequel were Jim Hawkins has love interest named Kate, teaming up with Long John Silver to stop Ironbeard, who is the main antagonist of the sequel, and he was going to be voiced by Willem Dafoe. Unfortunately, when they saw the first movie's failure at the box office, those plans were ultimately left buried.

Well said now that watch mojo is getting into it
@notorioustori
@notorioustori Месяц назад
I agree with franchise fatigue and higher ticket prices, but "identity politics" is BS dog whistle for "too much "other people" representation". Every Disney product, particularly since its 90s renaissance hits on identity politics/wider range of representation. It's a Small World, and all. And many many flops on this list outside of 2023 had no overt "identity politics" angles. While quite a few hits (like Encanto, animated Mulan, etc) were purely "identity politics" and/or specifically cultural flicks. I'm almost shocked you didn't say "woke" like most ppl do, lol. Disney made money hand over fist on stories they stole from others. Cinderella, Mulan, The Little Mermaid, Jungle Book, Tangled, The Lion King, I could go on, were other people's ideas, books, and characters that Disney "perfected" and made family friendly with happy endings. Then they procured Marvel, Star Wars, and other IPs that already had lore and followers. When it came time to produce original content, results varied greatly. When they went back to the tried & true remake well, much like recycled water, no one's falling over themselves to partake. Not only is there franchise fatigue but also choice paralysis. With the ridiculous number of subscription platforms with "must see" titles and finite number of hours in a day, how much we really want but can't find the time to watch a film doesn't quantity in box office or whatever numbers these companies use to count views.

One of my favorite Live-Action Disney movies of all time is Newsies. I first saw it as a Broadway Show when I was a kid and when I found out it was a movie, watched it. I LOVED IT! I get why it failed at the time but I have always loved it and always enjoy re-watching it. Also as a kid I loved the Black Cauldron and it was one of the most watched for me growing up. My mom bought it when it came out on VHS in 1997.

The video mentions "cultural representation" a few times. That alone explains some of the flops.

I work in a movie theater. Strange World was put out to die. From my perspective (and not representing any company I may or may not work for or have been employed by) Disney had ZERO faith in that movie. Once backlash started happening in the months before release they pulled the drag chute. The opening weekend came and there was no noticable bump in ticket sales for the location I was working at. No one cared about it. Even families coming in looking for something to watch didn't realize it was out and only bought tickets if they decided nothing else was worth it. Strange World probably would have fared better as a "straight to VHS" movie. For Seeing Red, that's a hard one to pin down. Theatrical releases survive on having RELATIVELY broad appeal. Red has a pretty specific audience: young asian girls within the first two generations of immigration to the US. Yes, other people can enjoy it, but the story is written from the perspective of an asian girl in a more traditional immigrant family which is educational, but not something that many outside of that demographic group can identify with. I'm not going to say it shouldn't have been made, but at the same time I'm not surprised it didn't do better. Even if it had better luck with its original theatrical release (no pandemic) I don't think it would have made much more. Lone Ranger was SUCH a disappointment. I wish they made better choices with the script, casting, and direction. I remember watching the black and white Lone Ranger at my grandparents house when I was a little kid and I loved it. I had such high hopes for the movie, but it was...just...awful. I even felt excitement when they started playing the William Tell Overture at the big fight scene, but I was still let down. Lone Ranger is about a man who's family is killed and he gets "revenge" by being a law man and bringing people to justice and refusing to shoot to kill. His whole thing about using silver bullets was that the silver won't cause a gunshot wound to fester with disease or lead poisoning (questionable science, but I could suspend disbelief). I was also hoping for a better treatment of Tanto, but that was...oof. That was a special kind of poor taste. I hope someone does a new Lone Ranger and tries to capture the pure hearted spirit of the original and not the schlock of the reboot.

To this day, I swear Mars Needs Moms was an intentional box office bomb. Disney wanted to close ImageMovers Digital but needed a reason. So what did Disney do? They released a $150 million film during the dead period (January-March). Had Disney released Mars Needs Moms in summer or Thanksgiving, the film would have performed better.

Mickey takes a vacation in Detroit- banned. The 15th warrior was also arrested development. Lone Ranger 2 is going to be the next best thing ever. Blackout 2 instead of black cauldron sequel.. haunted mansion three is already in the works starring Mel Gibson and Angelina Jolie. Star Wars episode 10 is called “episode 10- the revenge of fans”. Indiana Jones is coming back for another one called “” recovery of my money “. Jaws 8 is coming out soon. It’s called “jaws if I still have teeth “.

I don’t get how they say John Carter’s story had no originality when the books were the blue print to Dune, Superman, Flash Gordon, and Star Wars that came after it but ok… I guess 😅 either way it was a good movie adaption of the book. It was just released at the wrong time and promoted badly.

My experience with these films: John Carter- I like this film! I like how they tried to adapt a pulp novel that had a lot of influence. It wasn’t perfect but it was fun. It’s a shame to me how bad it flopped. ) mars Needs Moms, Country Bear Jamboree - I was too old for them and never saw them Jungle Cruise, Tomorrowland - JC was actually pretty fun to me, tho I had to do some online ride videos to understand it. I hadn’t been on the real ride in person. Tomorrowland, I had never been to WDW at that time. It was ok but convoluted and a clear attempt at advertising the place. Treasure Planet - it was a good film! But I never saw it in theaters.
