It seems a bit harsh to put the Bradford stadium thing at #15. As far as I'm aware, smoking wasn't prohibited in stadiums at the time so it was more of a safety issue that was always bound to happen until laws were changed and stadium safety was improved upon.
@joannedj1
@joannedj1 Год назад
Agree. The Bradford Fire was, sadly, a disaster waiting to happen. Years of accumulated litter under a huge wooden stand. Loads of people smoked in those days and it was an accidentally-dropped match or cig which started the fire. I wouldn’t class it as anyone being a moron. I remember watching it happen on TV. BBC’s Grandstand had sent an outside broadcast unit to Valley Parade as Bradford had won Division 3 and were to be presented with their trophy. Sadly, a day that was supposed to be a celebration became a tragedy just before half time. RIP the 56.

Top 3 (In my opinion): 1. Malice at the Palice 2. NFL Snowball Battle 3. State of origin's moment of no silence It seems the situations gets worse when more people get involved with them. However, no doubt Malice at the Palace was one of the worst things to see in sports history, it takes only one prick to set the arena into madness, if only he didn't throw that water bottle. The snowball battle had an interesting fight but also dangerous, leading to the refs to threat the crowd, which that's never happened before. And the no silence one was so uncalled for, it's almost as brutal as fans getting into fights. At this rate they're going to need more security than before.

Another dishonourable mention should go to a "friendly" match between Ireland and England in February 1995. After Ireland scored a goal 20 minutes, idiotic English fans started chanting "no surrender to the IRA," and then started hauling seats and other projectiles they could get their hands on, down from the upper stand (where much of the English fans were located) down to an area where mostly Irish fans were gathered. Pleas to end the madness fell upon deaf ears and the match ended up being abandoned. To make matters worse, English "fans" were pictured cheering about their stupid behaviour, for playing a big role in the game being abandoned

I'm not sure the Bradford fire should be considered "ruined by morons". Smoking was commonplace (and permitted) at the time, it's likely that an uncleared buildup of debris under the stand was what was ignited, rather than the stand itself.

Agree. I really don’t think the Bradford Fire belongs in this compilation. There was a lot of other football around that same time (1985) that was ruined by morons, as hooliganism was rife in those days, but the Bradford Fire was caused by an accidentally-dropped match or cig.

Cool adding Olympique de Marseille to the list but you trivialized what happened to Payet. It was the 3rd consecutive away game where our players were attacked/assaulted by “fans” (Montpellier-OM; Nice-OM; Lyon-OM) So it wasn’t: a bottle was thrown at him so they called off the match. He was specifically targeted every time he would try to kick a corner.

@@alpha34098 Actually he left Marseille to go to Westham when OM were in financial trouble and had to sell most/all of their top players. He came back after about a year and a half. However, in this case it’s really imbeciles having access to public events. I won’t call them fans, targeting Olympique de Marseille players for simply playing for a “rival” team. OM-Lyon is a rivalry, sure, as the top Olympiques of Ligue 1, and nothing more can be expected from Lyon fans, but the other times our players were attacked they had no reason (Marseille, Montpellier and Nice are neighboring cities)

I don't blame Artest. He actually made a conscious choice to stop fighting (albeit a strange way of doing it). The situation was beginning to deescalate. Then came the cup. Everyone who was there says the same thing, "We saw the cup flying...We saw where it was going to land ...and all we could say to ourselves was OH NO!!!". That cup broke all the chill that Artest had at that moment, and he broke out like an animal. The guy in the video was right. If the fan hadn't thrown that cup, it would have been a totally different, and mostly forgotten event.

This is why I’m happy the Lightning signed Pierre. He’s the only goon with a soul. Everyone starts fighting, Bellemare (the guy who hit Orlov) is the ONLY one try to make sure no one falls on him and that he has space for the medics to come on the ice. CLASS. ACT.😤💯

I was at a Carolina Panther’s game where a group of protesters managed to smuggle in a huge banner and climbing ropes and harnesses past security. They took them to the top level of the stadium, unfurled the banner down in front of then owner Jerry Richardson’s suite, and repelled down on the ropes and harnesses. It was something alright.

Surprised not to see what happened during a 2011/12 Dutch Cup match between Ajax and AZ ALkmaar where AZ goalkeeper Esteban Alvarado was attack by an Ajax fan. He defended himself by kicking at the fan. Referee sent Alvarado off for violent conduct which made AZ players walk off in protest. The match was replayed in an empty stadium a month later where AZ won. Another thing about the 2015 FAI Cup final. It was a double header with the Women's cup final taking place before the men's cup final. The womens match went to extra time and then penalties. By then it was the warm up period for the mens final taking place afterwards. Cork City players began warming up while the penalty shootout was ongoing An entertaining Women's Cup Final overshadowed by an incompetent FAI allowing Cork City to warm up during said shootout

I remember watching a Cubs game a few years back that's never shown on any lowlight reels, someone tried to distract the pitcher (I don't know if it was the Cubs pitcher or the opponent) by using a rapidly flashing red light during the pitch, something like you see when some cameras are about to take a picture. It happened at least twice before the person was escorted off.

This may not qualify for a couple of reasons but; July 4, 2022 a protestor interfered with Joey Chestnut during the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest. Joey who had to get around using crutches due to ruptured tendon, continued to eat a hotdog while putting the protestor in a headlock and shoving him out of the way. Joey went on to consume 63 hotdogs and win the contest

I'm not sure if this one counts, but there was incident that happened during the 1913 Epsom Derby that was held in Surrey, England. A Suffragist named Emily Davison walked onto the track, and tried to grab the reins of the horse that was owned by King George V. She ended getting hit, and died a couple of days later in the hospital due to injuries. The incident was caught on camera (There's actual footage still around), and there isn't a clear explanation for why she did it, but most assumed so she can put a Suffrage flag on one of the horses.
