@@femtrooperfor someone who hasn’t played any Final Fantasy games (but loves Dragon Quest, Persona 5), what FF game would you suggest starting with on the Switch?
@@GermanFrisbeeDog Ooooo! You would probably like 4, or maybe 7, 9, or 10. Those are all favs for me. 4 is old school and charming. 6 is great but just not my fav personally - although most people say it’s their fav…I like 4 more.
I still religiously play the original NES Dragon Quest games. I grew up with Dragon Warrior 1 and still have my Nintendo Power promotion pack with the maps, charts, and players guide with that awesome fantasy art. Yes, the original is grindy and hard, but I love the pixel art and playing it on emulation with save states makes it manageable.
Femtrooper, you always make me so happy when you make a new video. Thanks for this. Of your list (so far), I have 9 of them. We have great minds and e think alike. I can’t wait to finish the list!
The Switch is such a great machine for JRPGs. My favorites are FFV, FFVI, Monster Hunter Stories 2, all the Xenoblade Chronicle games and Shin Megami Tensei V. Great video as always.
I totally agree with your love for Final Fantasy IX. It's my personal favorite of the mainline Final Fantasy franchise. Thank you for this half of the list...it made me realize I don't have IX on my Switch yet.
I absolutely hate myself for buying shining pearl rather than diamond and I am still on that knife edge about buying it just so I can play it. So happy to turn on my TV and see that you had uploaded especially during prime day when I am ready to beef up my very large backlog
I love that you mentioned FFX-2! I adore this game! This game is my number one favourite game, alongside Witcher 3. I also really love Triangle strategy. I enjoyed it way more than Octopath Traveller. AND you love FE Engage?! I love your videos! 😊❤
Great list and nice watch to start my work day! I share the same sentiments about Pokémon BDSP. I always thought it was a good transition from the older style in a modern way. Not sure why everyone was so hard on it.
Not gonna lie, I was actually surprised to see final fantasy I on here! Totally agree that it is way better than you might expect! Haha love this video! These are great picks, but hearing you talk about all these is why I’m here!
Great list! Fire Emblem Engage is such a fantastic game. I like three houses more but I love them both so much! I cant wait to see what makes the top of your list 🎉
I LOVED Final Fantasy 10, beat it last month. I'm gonna play 10-2 soon, I'm excited! If we're talking about the final boss of FF10, yeah hes hard, I was targeting his healing pillars before targeting him but I kept dying. Try ignoring the pillars altogether and just focus on him, if they heal him, who cares. You'll do more damage by spamming Holy than trying to prevent his heals. Hope that helps! It worked for me.
I listen to a Canadian guy that has a retro gaming podcast. He has said that Canadians apologize a lot. I see it's true lol! JK! Don't apologize for how you play them on easy or whatever. Play them how you want. I'm 46 and don't have a lot of time to play games so I select easy on a game if it's a choice. I play RPGs mostly for the story anyways. Great video, I'm looking forward to part two!
Great picks, I'm very curious to see what's in your top 10. I agree on the Gen 4 remakes. The original Diamond and Pearl came at the perfect time for me, in the tumult and mayhem of middle school where I could just sneak away to battle against my other reject friends. The biggest problem was how slow it was, so I actually very much appreciated a deeply faithful remake brushed up with modern conveniences, speed, and all the changes that have occurred since, like the Fairy type. Also, that Cynthia rematch is one of the only times I've had to competitively rethink in the whole series, so definitely not a cakewalk.
@@femtrooperI kind of liked Arceus, and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens with the series, but I hated Sword and Shield/Scarlet and Violet. I put around 60 hours in the Diamond and Pearl remakes. They just had that great old school feel that I love. I hope that they'll do the same with other earlier versions
The Pixel Remaster collection of Final Fantasy 1-6 is so, so good. I've been going through the games bit by bit (only just started with FF3), replaying all those games and they are just the perfect games to relax to. They even made FF2 into an enjoyable game here. If they counted as a combined entry, they'd probably go very near to the top of my list. But it's a bit unfair to compare the first Dragon Quest to the first Final Fantasy as DQ1 is just much older. To put it into perspective, Final Fantasy 1 originally came out just two months before Dragon Quest III and to compare it to another series, it came out the same week(!) as Phantasy Star. And compared to DQ3 FF1 might not look so good. Not that it matters much, they are all solid games I love to revisit from time to time. Luckily all these games, including Phantasy Star, are on Switch. Looking forward to your final top 10. Then I can complain about all those great games you left out (all in good fun, of course).
I'm glad to hear you liked FF1, the remaster plays quite nicely. It's probably the FF I've played the most over the years, the combo of fixed party and relatively short game makes it a good weekend playthrough when the mood takes me. For anyone who thinks the characters are too bland, a bit of imagination goes a long way. 8-bit Theatre being probably the best example of how much personality an "empty vessel" can have if you let it. SquareEnix knows FF8 is one of the more divisive titles, that's WHY it got bundled with FF7 for the Switch physical. 😂 Triangle Strategy is great! I'm still of the opinion that SquareEnix's recent string of absolutely terrible names has been holding back their new IP. I get it; their two evergreens are Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest! Just two words that convey a theme! But in 20xx, their attempts to replicate that magic have just read as very bland and uninspired. Looking forward to your top ten!
Loved the video. I enjoy and own all these games. Triangle Strategy was my game of the year when it came out. I look foward to your 10 ten ones coming out next week.
It's nice to see FFX-2 and Fire Emblem Engage relatively high on the list. They get a lot of hate for being too cheesy or "anime" but that's what make them fun to me.
I need to play the pixel remaster of Final Fantasy 1 as I haven't played it since back in the day. I enjoyed my time with Blue Reflection 2nd Light, though I guess you have to play through it a second time to get the real ending; not something I'll be doing for a while. Good list!
FF9 needs to be play with the moguri mod is a really amazing mod, also if you like silly fun stories and good gameplay you should check the disgaea series. Good list looking forward to the next one.
I still hold the original Final Fantasy VII in really high esteem, but I also feel the same way you do about Remake/Rebirth -- I feel so much more connected to the characters and the story in the new entries. Honestly, the story and dialog in the OG just doesn't hold up, and coming from a grownup's perspective, it's actually pretty terrible (the localization was so rushed and barely comprehensible at times...). I do still feel that nostalgic pull of the original, but I think the new version is much, much better.
YESSSSS! I’m glad you agree! Some of the older games are great but it’s just harder to connect with some of the characters compared to the new games. I don’t care if I’m THAT GUY for saying it.
20: Beat FF 1 Yaaaaaay! (first game I ever had besides Mario Bros was Dragon "Warrior" LOL on the NES! My fav. but yes I also beat FF1.) (yeah, I'm 45 years old.) 19: Never Played Blue Reflection. ( looks cool though!) 18: Never Played a Pokemon game besides pokemon Go... Think I was too old and Playing Magic the Gathering Cards (1994) when my little cousins were playing Pokemon. 17: Beat FF7 on the PS1, ....Never beat the Remastered or played the Remastered. 16: Beat Dragon Quest 1-3 as well, How fun! What great games! 15: Never Played Grandia... Dang, I'm missing out on some good games! 14: Final Fantasy X-X2 ....AWWWWE CRAP! I was in the middle of a move and the game!!! never got to finish it,... Loved it from what I can remember. (Playstation days.....) ( ***So Glad I have a Nintendo Switch NOW!*****) 13:Never Heard of Triangle Strategy.... I'm not into Strategy too much. 12:FF9 ,... I own this game, never played through the first part after the Opera Stage part.... I want to, but I always start over, then play another game, then start over, and over.. (Sad days) lol 11:Never played a fire emblem game... Femtrooper!!! your videos are fire!! Keep it up!!!
Such a fun video! Triangle Strategy’s writing was phenomenal for me. It really helped me get immersed. I got to thinking when you mentioned that FFX2 is more lighthearted, but have you tried World of Final Fantasy? I adored it. So cute, light, and just fun!
"I am horrible at these games.", Femtrooper with one of the most relatable things said in 2024. I'm not great at FE either lmao. I still hope FF9 gets remade, never played that before but it looks super charming. Great list! 👍
Yep same here, story and the way the game makes me feel are the first things I look for, then gameplay. If a game lacks a good story and character development I genuinely don’t play them🤔 not always though. Consequently I end up playing a lot of weird obscure and out of the box games because of my preferences Really liked your list❤ thanks for the upload Nice to see more appreciation and love for final fantasy X-2🥰 ironically X-2 and FF 13 trilogy are my favorites out of all the FF games Mm have not played a lot of fire emblem games aside from awakening witch I absolutely love❤ I’ll have to check out engage after hearing you gush about it😏 same with FF9 thank you for the recommendations
I really liked the first 3/4 of FF9. Just felt to me like it went too long, like it should have been 2 different games or something. FE Engage really surprised me. I'd never played a FE game before because it didn't really catch my interest but I loved it.
I agree with your thoughts on Grandia. The game is amazing, It portrays the idea of adventure better than any other JRPG I've ever played. Those dungeons are freaking terrible though! The camera angle definitely adds to that pain.
Surprise to see Triangle Strategy on this. It didn’t get much love from the community and gaming critics from what I read and saw. Maybe I’ll pick it up during the prime sale if there’s a deal. JRPGs are like ice cream, there are so many to from. 😂
Persona 5, Nier automata, final fantasy 9, Dragon quest 11. Switch exlusive, Astral Chain. Final fantasy 9 isnt this gen, but final fantasy 9 and dragon quest 11 were perfection, closely followed by Nier and persona 5, astral chain slightly behind those. But FF9 can do no wrong to me, i already commented before how FF9 and dragon quest 11 are the only RPG's that are truely perfect to me and DQ 11 brought me back to my childhood and how much i loved FF9, ff 9's setting/atmosphere/style is just perfection, dont think anything will ever beat that for me. I understand what you mean about final fantasy 7, i got into it after ff9, and i tried multiple times through the years to beat it, but i would allways quit right as i left midgard/the snake swamp area... But it did allways grab me with the music and hype around it, and the sentimental value everyone had for it. So i beat final fantasy 7 remake, THEN i beat the psp remake on switch, crisis core... and THEN i was able to beat the ps1 game on switch and i was fully invested in the story to actualy beat it, i dont know why i couldnt get through it before but it was definetly worth it beating it after what, 20years? And i want a pokemon soul silver re-release on switch....
@@femtrooper Glad you enjoyed my short novel ha Last pokemon game i loved was soul silver (Platinum), and only cause i love gold/silver, i tried the other games but they just dont do it for me. So i hope they remake it on switch 2!
Dragon quest always a blast, can't wait for the remake hd-2d...final fantasy pixel remaster a little disappointed cause they didn't used the gba remake
Monster Hunter Stories 1 and 2, FFX-2, FF4, FF9, FXII The Zodiac Age, Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door (Vivian finally got the trans recognition she deserves), and Grandia 1 and 2 for sure. Not Switch, but Jeanne d'Arc just hit PSN on PS4/5. It's a Level-5 Tactical rpg and one of my favorite PSP games.
@femtrooper Oop, there goes my heart. It's basically Pokemon, but you fight with your Monster Besties or Monsties. There's multiple towns in both and the basic story is going around and investigating strange occurences.
Hey Femtrooper that's a nice list for the top 20 here's my list 1. Dragon Quest 8 2. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 4. Chrono Trigger 5. Super Mario RPG 6. Octapatth Traveler 7.Breath of Fire and 8 Breath of Fire 2 9. Breath of Fire 3 10. Paper Mario thousand year door 11. Dragon warrior 3 12.Dragon warrior 4 13. Tales of Symphonia 14. Secret of Mana 15. Skies of Arcadia 16. Final fantasy 17. Eiyuden Chronicles 18. X-men Legends 19 X-Men Legends 2 and finally 20. Tails of the Abyss so tell me what's your favorite?
Hey Paige -- Like you, I loved playing through Fire Emblem Engage. I got Three Houses originally, but the whole "manage a school" thing turned me off after a few hours. My question, though, is have you played or bothered with the Engage DLC? I've been wondering if it's worth it at all. Seems like it's just more Emblem unlocks and not much worth the crazy price for someone who already beat the game once. In any case, thanks for the video! Appreciate the effort.
When you're going through a list of games could you visually prop the game in-frame of your shot, or have it's name somewhere on the screen? If I hop to a random point in one of your videos it's difficult to ascertain what title you're talking about. Another option would be to make chapters.
Great list bout where I would put the games sept 10-2 but anyway grandia 2 is a awesome game story and characters really good. just if you can get over the jakiness of the movement and yes more jainky dungeons you will enjoy it.
BDSP is great. Unpopular opinion: It is for the better that they went with the limited GYMS of DP and not Platinum. I like that they have different Pokemon not of their type, as it makes battles more startegic. Sadly what happnes in many Pokemon games, is that you sweep the GYMS/ League with one super effective Pokemon against their type. Not in BDSP. And you still got some of Platnium Dex in the underground, plus three new ones (Ursaring, Pinsir, and Jynx).
@@femtrooper I kid. 8 is possibly my favorite. Love the draw system though it makes the end game potentially very difficult if you spend too much time grinding... Which is very odd for an RPG. Thankfully you could skip that potential difficulty spike with the version you have.
@@remakeyourself Yeah, I got close to the end and a boss was really hard so I ended up dropping it. I’m not proud of it lol I would love to beat it someday!
The weird thing when you say "Well its fire emblem its not gonna have some deep story or characters" and thats exactly the reason 3 houses was the first fire emblem I finished/fell in love with. 3 houses has great deep characters and a pretty intricate story too. On the other hand, I left FE Engage after about 10hrs : everyone in this game if your groupie, everyone loves you and lives "through you" like they can't exist without you and barely have a personality. Obviously, the gameplay is great, but I can't brush story/characters to the side in an RPG, doesnt work for me, you can have a cool battle system, if the world and story is bland anime with weird fanboy/fangirl companions, ew ...
I started the original 'Grandia' for the first time, last night. It's still early hours and I'm excited to see where the story is going to go. 🤠 Looking forward to the next video. 👍
Dragon quest is so basic you can skip saving the princess beat the bad guy and still beat the game, looking forward to the 2d hd remake of 3. You should play grandia II it’s pretty good. I don’t know if you’ve played it I would suggest I Am Setsuna
Great video! 3D Dot Game Heroes is our white whale of gaming!!!!! Never had a PS3 (was having a similar experience to you w/FF13 on XBox360). Our friend showed us 3D Dot Game Heroes and it looked amazing. It was getting an XBox360 port, which we were hyped for. It got cancelled!! It was never ported to anything else, and it can't be emulated because the game crashes. It's rare and expensive now. Hopefully some day it gets a port to something else🫠
Love FF9... glad to see it here. I just started a brand new playthrough on PS1. I'll check out the Switch version of these days because of all the extra features (plus handheld..!). Can't wait for part 2... I better see Persona 5 Royal on there!!! :p
