ABOUT A TO ZEN LIFE
Along my journey to let go of 30 years of clutter, I accidentally became a minimalist and it was life-changing.
Before, I was an emotional hoarder with nothing but the clutter from lost loved ones - and $25,000 of debt - to my name. Now I have a beautiful home in Europe, a happy family, live debt-free, and - best of all - wake up to a life that I’m EXCITED to live every day.
My mission is to help you conquer your clutter and simplify YOUR way to a happier and better life. HERE'S OUR STORY: atozenlife.com/about-a-to-zen...

I had 38 pairs of shoes, boots and sandals.😮 You have helped me to declutter down to nine pairs! The ones I’ve donated were not comfortable on me or were for my fantasy self. They’ve gone! I also donated 14 handbags and am down to four. You’ve also just made me think about wearing clothes that aren’t great because I’m the only one seeing them. It’s like I don’t care enough about myself to wear clothes that look good. That should change too!😢. Thank you.

@@AtoZenLifethank you. Still find I’m holding on to some fantasy self items I need to let go. Expensive clothes I’m sure I’ll wear. I won’t. We really do need a lot less than we realise. I just had a really difficult week so decided to wear only black tops and jeans that week. One pair of boots. One bag. One coat. Made me realise how much easier that week was! No choices to be made. Just grab and go. I am going to have another go at my wardrobe! 😊

@@Chrissyhappy this is a good point - I was feeling a bit smug because I already only have 5 pairs of shoes/boots/trainers and one chest of drawers' worth of clothes - clothes and shoes just aren't my thing, I don't care about collecting them - but then I remembers there is one storage bag of "when I was thin" nice clothes under the bed. & now I feel less smug, haha. I believe at the beginning of my decluttering journey, i had 137 pairs of shoes. I was single and just kept buying cheep and not so cheap shoes. Now i have just a few pairs. It took at least 6 months and multiple decluttering sessions to get rid of most if them. I needed to be honest with myself. Now i don't shop unless i truly need it so i have learned from my old bad habits. Great video!!

I have 8 pairs of shoes and I wear them all regularly. I used to have a huge walk in closet and a large amount of shoes and in the last 4 years I've massively cut down. The first 2 years I donated 1-2 trash bags of clothes per month. Now I donate 2 trash bags a year when I find things I don't care to wear anymore. I can cycle my wardrobe for hot and cold seasons and each one fits in a single plastic storage tote. We don't have walk in closets in our home and have small reach in closets from the 80s. My husband and I can both easily share our closet as well as fit our dresser in the closet.

Please remember that "Expiration date" is a SUGGESTION. The food (especially canned goods) might be perfectly fine even way beyond the date suggested, so don´t just toss it out. Look, smell and common sense will tell you if your pantry item is still eatable or not. Love the video and good tips!

I used to keep all the books that I had already read so I wouldn’t forget about the experience. Now I keep a book journal where I simply write the title, author, and day I finished it. Then I can look back and remember what I’ve read and it jogs my memory, but I can declutter the book right away. And I love the feeling of finishing a book and getting to write it in my book! I’ve kept this habit for 14 years in the same little journal!

Shoes are so difficult. Work, summer, winter, leisure, hike, camp, swim, lounge… and the older you get, the more picky your feet are in various situations. I’ve edited a…lot, but still keep necessary shoewear and also cookware. Still working on my emotional attachments to non-essential items. At this point in my life I live in a room with shared kitchen at my sister’s house and have a storage that is basically my garage for rec activities but is also overwhelmed with memories that tangibly prove some self worth but I know are no longer valid. Baby steps. Thanks for your insight. Enjoying your content.

I do something similar with my clothes. I hang most of them and as I put away clothes, everything gets pushed to the back. I know everything in the back, I haven’t worn. I also put a different colored hanger in there after I declutter. Like your tape, it’s a visual divider showing what I have and have not worn. Everything in the back can probably get donated. You can also turn your hangers backwards. And when you wear something, flip it back around when you put it away. Everything still backwards after a certain period of time can be donated.

Thank you for mentioning throwing things away. I had done a big Marie Kondo last year, and I had boxes and boxes of stuff piled up. I don't drive. I asked for friends to give me a ride to the thrift store, and that never happened, and I called many charities to come pick up items and never found one that came to my area. I joined a facebook group where you can list things for free, and that didn't work out either. Eventually my friend said to throw it out. And I said that it's very bad for the environment, and most of it was perfectly good stuff someone could use. So my friend said, but at what mental cost? It's been stressing you out for months, and it's just sitting there making you miserable. I give you permission to throw it away. Imagine the relief and what you can do to help others once that mental burden is gone. So for anyone reading this, I also give you permission.

Getting books out of the house is definitely the toughest one for us. I managed to move a few along when i packed one of our bookcases for moving, but the other bookcases i just packed whole because we'll have to soul search on some of the books. It's not always easy to decide you're fine with a book and if you know you can't get it at the library (we have a lot of classic sci fi and fantasy, definitely not what you see at the library or the bookshop) letting it go isn't simple. The kids books are a bit easier, but having said that my mum held onto all my and my brother's dr seuss books and it was an instant amazing library for both my kids. I was so happy to read those books again and not have to buy them. I think books is very personal and it doesn't fall into the "clutter" category to me like, say, unused kitchen appliances or clothes does

I decluttered most of my stuff and I´m really happy about it. Except for shoes, my guilty pleasure - 75 pairs. Some of them are pretty old but in great condition. I take care of them thoroughly. I wear them all. It´s the process, I try not to buy a new one. My excuse is that I live in a place where we have 4 seasons. In other areas, I behave more reasonably and as a minimalist🙂

For a family of 4. I have 4 bath towels. 4 beach towels. 2 cleaning towels. 4 hand towels. Our house is too small to have guests, so no guest towels. I have never been in a situation where I needed more towels. If a towel gets soiled- I wash it right away. Same with sheets. I have winter sheets and summer sheets- one set of each. Even with little kids I’ve never been in a situation when I needed more. ❤

I don’t have any shoes but I do have 2 pairs of winter boots. I have a neuropathy on my feet for 25 years. I did keep my shoes stored for about 20 years but then donated them. I use the boots only a few times in the winter when I can’t use my power wheelchair. I use a lot of socks. My neuropathy is so painful that shoes are not an option. Now I will think of the neuropathy as a blessing because I have no shoes to declutter. Lol. Truthfully when I wore shoes the most I have ever had was less than a half of a dozen. Thank you so much for your videos, they are very well done and enjoyable to listen to. ❤

Where I live, scavengers know the garbage pickup days & routes. Just set out a box of stuff marked "free," at the same time as the bins, and they hoover it up. Super easy!

I used to have a lot of shoes that I had a hard time getting rid of. After injuring my Achilles, many of my shoes just didn't fit comfortably. Not only have my feet changed, but I realised how important a well fitting pair of shoes is for avoiding pain. I actually now wear a full size larger than what I previously wore. I am hoping to sell a pair of Mukluks but all my other shoes I was able to throw out or donate.

I want to thank you a great deal for inspiring me to start decluttering! You've helped me a LOT with your videos. You show a healthy side of minimalism, which is not always the case with minimalistic channels. Around a year or two ago, I had about 5-60 pairs of shoes, if not more. And the clothes, oh my, don't get me started there. I was by no means a hoarder, but was getting so close to that. I started selling, gifting and donating them since. Now I have around 20 pairs of shoes and all my clothes fit in my wardrobe. I mean ALL of them, winter, summer, autumn and spring ones, with all the jackets, bags and scarves. It still feels like a lot, but those are the ones I have harder time letting go of. I also recently started wearing barefoot/minimalistic shoes, and oh my, the comfort and space they provide is unbelievable! It's been less than 2 months and I no longer want to wear "normal" shoes at all, I tried and my feet started protesting :D So that makes things easier for me to declutter, and a new declutter marathon is on my way :)

For instruction manuals, I've created a file in my phone that has a link to the online instructions so there's no need to keep the physical ones. I've since added a printed sheet for my home binder which has QR codes (along with contact and login info) to instruction manuals, warranties, utilities and other bills. Just in case they're ever wiped from my phone somehow. You can fit so much on a single sheet. For paper stacks I have a tiny portable & adjustable shredder that fits perfectly on top of a recycled box. It's right next to my file and recycle boxes so I can get each thing done as I go rather than sorting into piles and then backtracking to complete each task. Boom, boom, boom! Done! I know it's not groundbreaking but hopefully this info is helpful to someone.

I barely throw out any expired food. The majority of products dont go bad way beyond the expiration date. Anyhow: The key is to keep track of what you have stored. With condiments I also try to use them up but I can also see why this mindset is making it hard for me to declutter. I have always been a bit of a food hoarder and just when I was making progress the pandemic and the war in Ukraine have shifted my mind greatly in terms on what amounts of food I consider "reasonable" to keep at home.

Very happy to report that I currently have a single pair of tennis shoes (they've survived several years only because I go barefoot whenever shoes aren't absolutely necessary, lol). My weakness is definitely books, but I've been on a quest the last few years to read everything on my shelves and let go of the ones I know I won't read again. Finally got down to just under three shelves' worth of books on a five-shelf bookcase!

You made me count my shoes. 16, and a couple are on the chopping block. I have a shoe organizer and all my shoes, with the exception of my hiking boots, and possible new winter boots, must fit in it or I will have to declutter a pair. That’s my limit. I never have shoes laying about because they have a home. Yea!!

I own 28 pairs of shoes, but certainly don’t wear that many regularly 🤔 Your son is so pleased with himself 😂I remember when my brother went thru that phase back in the day. 🙂 I’d just like to add to your extensive list of useful tips that most libraries also offer digital content on apps where you can check out audio or text materials to listen to or consume on a reader device. I use ours frequently and it’s very popular. You can even place holds, and many items are new releases. Also, re: old phones, some companies like Apple offer a take-back program to keep those unused chip-containing devices out of landfill. I used this to dispose of my last phone. 🌿

Marissa, would you consider doing a video on how to help those that are very sentimental declutter? We tried to do a family declutter (clothing only) with my 3 and just-turned 7 year old and he had such a hard time. He's a very sensitive little soul and just could not part with his outgrown winter jacket from last year. We want to be supportive and respect his feelings but also want to make sure he learns the important life skill of letting things go. When when he was 5, he'd want to hold on to the shoes her had outgrown for his own kids someday!

I know I have under 20 pairs of shoes/boots/sandals. I’m pretty picky with the ones I thrift or buy new, but I like variety and I’m super eclectic. I actually just went through my closet and was able to have that hard talk with myself about what I actually wear and what I liked the idea of. I donated a huge bag! And I also went through my project pile (clothes diys and such) and had another hard talk with myself about time and how much I’d actually wear. It feels great. I have other categories I’m working on too. I’ll definitely never be a minimalist, but I can make my maximalist more manageable😊

Gift ribbons and bows…🎀 My mum used to buy tons of that stuff and I did, too. Every color, shiny-metallic, bast, velvet, big, small,…🙈🤷🏻‍♀️ Then there were less and less gifts to make. Kids grew up and preferred money, people passed away. So we both were literally sitting on our stuff. Mum came up with the idea of not buying string anymore. Sometimes it looked so odd but it was very colorful. I still have a big box left after years.

I think around the time I started decluttering with you about a year ago, I had a partially knitted (i.e. just the waistband) summer sweater that had sat unfinished on the needles for about 10 years and two moves between two countries and three states! I finally did get honest with myself about that one...and pulled the yarn off the needles. Clearly this sweater wasn't happening! I have also donated extra hangers and use the hangers we have to limit how many clothes any of us keep. Extra towels and linens went just last month. I've been able to let go of books I "should read" and borrow from the library the ones I actually do want to read. I keep just a few boxes for clothing and gear swaps but they have to fit in their designated section of the guest room closet. I periodically delete/back up on computer the extra photos from my phone. Your channel has been life changing for me. Thank you so much.

One thing I do that I get comments about, that I came to do, is keep one set of matching Tupperware. I do not keeps extra container from takeout/delivery or other items. I just recycle them. I just buy the same”collection” from the grocery store and replace with the same ones as needed. I buy all square shapes and they all fit inside each other, and the lids fit flat with each other as well. Two little spots and I am not afraid of them falling out on me. I’m also amazed when they say women spend over $100+ on clothing/shoes/jewelry a month. I can go months without buying these items. I might have two splurges a year. And I limit that to $200. I have one purse, and usually use it for a year. Not to say I don’t buy a geeky t-shirt once in a while, overall I just live in my jeans and t-shirts.
