Given the context of the clip used and this video... In what world is that not fair use? I'm genuinely intrigued how that got a strike. There is probably multiple versions of that full performance on youtube. Like wtf??
@@lifeunderthestarstv I don't listen to them, but are you sure it's not fry? pretty sure it's not false chord (like the narrator says), not enough distortion
@Ash3n. he inhales sometimes and some times false cord, it cant be fry scream coz u can still hear the note, when fry scream its more of a mouth positioning technique not a note
unfortunatley around 2003 chino heavily damaged his vocal chords which impacted his singing so much that he never screamed anything like in the 90' or at the eginning od 2000'
@@apexlegendsofficialreal yeah but it's a valid point what Mateusz said. Chino sounded very bad for a long time in the 2000s. He recovered a lot since then and you can hear he became much better live.
He was such a beast before then to think night after night doing live shows his voice was so solid. I guess that’s the problem when you’re young and coming up you don’t have the foresight to take care of your voice for longevity.
Back when they was on ozzfest . Around 1998. The band was interviewed by some magazine his band mates. Steph and Chi said Dr. told him to stop drinking and smoking. Shortly after. Terry Date had him a vocal specialist lined up. So all yall right!
Apparently he was not a natural, his voice took a lot of time to develop. His voice is odd for sure but he really is a wonderful example of learning how to use one's voice. I really have a thing for singers that have unusual voices though. To me it's like hearing a jug band belt out a prog rock song. Such beauty conveyed from a direction one would never expect.
@@kurtisbell8475 You bring up an excellent point. I do have a hard time singing along with these types of singers though. The key to doing a Chino song is not trying to sound like Chino, I do believe. Or Manson ffs, if you've every attempted such
@@polarbare3 Yeah, It can be absolutely hard, the one I struggle with is either Kurt Cobain or Corey Taylor one of them coughs up blood, and another screams even like hell (well they both can but yeah(
For those who don't know, Chino's really high-pitched screams are inhale screams. The man also has wicked control over his voice to be able to achieve those inhale screams and not just sound like a pterodactyl lol. They are super clean and have very little to no rasp.
That's what I always thought, but was never sure of.. Once saw a band who made a similar sound and when I asked if the guy did inhales, he said no lol.. I guess he didn't know what I meant (English not being our native language and from other parts of the conversation he wasn't too sure about other things either). Thanks for clearing that up!
When I saw them live it look me a moment to register that those screams were coming from on stage and not some random girl with a very loud scream. Chino's high pitched squeals were insane. Bro sounded like he was echolocating.
Sometimes that’s the price you’re willing to pay ( if you’re him) just to make the music that everyone loves. I don’t think there’s a single person who doesn’t like deftones.
I've been always mesmerized by his vocals in earlier years. No, not just the screaming, his vocal range was GOLD. It still is, it's just sad to see how much it got damaged :'(
I think the screaming ability is all he's lost over the years, which I don't mind too much. It just means we get more lyrical masterpieces instead of the stuff that'll make your eyes bleed if you listen too long.
I saw them live maybe 2 years ago and he can still scream but he has said when he was younger he smoked and drank alot and damaged his vocal chords. He still has a great voice though I ❤ chino Moreno
There is a scream on the live version from "Your Skull is Red" that really gimme the goosebumps. It's a falsetto scream, beautiful. But I love his melancholic/sweet melodies more than anything. Chino vocals are a world treasure.
Honarable mentions: Hole in the earth, the first track out of Saturday Night Wrist has a line at the beginning "Can YOU explain to ME HOW." that literally sounds like he's using autotune or something. Chino Moreno could be using autotune but knowing metal bands like this, I highly doubt it. Secondly, Cherry Waves, on the same album, has another vocal line similar to the first one "The waves SUCK you beneath." I showed the song to one of my friends and was scared just imaging singing that. Go ahead and listen to those two tracks, especially if you're a singer, I'm sure it'll blow you away O_O
He does use some tuning on his voice for the recorded work but it's mixed in a way that naturally highlights instead of replacing. Matt Hyde is a brilliant engineer. He has a great mixdown technique and a firm grasp of the tools at his disposal. He's been the bands(also side projects) lead studio engineer since 2010 or so. One of the best.
@@darrylehm Shaun Lopez from Far? I knew Deftones were friends with Far, but I didn’t know Shaun worked on their stuff like that (if it is indeed the same Lopez).
@@anti-ethniccleansing465 yep! the one and the same. if you listen to the Far stuff from that period (especially their cover of Ginuwine's "Pony"), he's doing the same thing with Jonah's voice.
I’ve been avoiding listening to Deftones for many many years for unknown reason. I loved like that until that one day when Changes randomly played from my RU-vid playlist. I instantly fell in love with Chino’s voice and singing style, it’s so hypnotic. His ability to sing and scream with so high pitched voice mixed with heavy low guitar riffs played by Carpenter is something that gives me goosebumps everytime. Rosemary and Tempest are absolutly GOAT and I could listen to them forever.
It sounds like it has a lot of his yelling voice in it. I'd imagine he's doing his regular screaming technique (fry or false or whatever he does haha) and then some combo of letting his voice kind of break (like when you make your voice crack on purpose by kind of "pulling back" when doing a note) and pushing pretty hard. The tricky part is he isn't necessarily doing a healthy technique or anything too specific, and that's part of the magic.
Both of these answers sounds spot on to me hahah. Well put. Definitely a cracking technique involved and I believe Chino has been known to cause some pretty serious vocal cord damage a time or two in his career.
What makes Chino so amazing as a vocalist is not his screams or his range, but the odd notes he chooses to go to. Hes a unique talent with an amazing ear and voice
Please do a video on Kyo from Dir En Grey! His singing and screaming range plus some of the techniques are top level. He’s my favorite vocalist and is even better in the live videos. I can make specific songs and performances if needed. If you’re actually love Crazy Singing, You’ll be blown away!
I just found this video and channel and really enjoyed it, please would you do one on Kyo from Dir en Grey, he is absolutely insane!! Great stuff, thanks!
I remeber as a teenager never really understanding the deftones excepet a few songs. Now as an adult I can't get enough of all their stuff. So beautiful
If you like vocals like this, check out Kyo from Dir En Grey. He's got other groups, but for this type of vocals. He used to inhale in his younger days, but doesn't need to anymore
I love Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away) by deftones so much because of the end where Chino scream/cries "I don't care where just far" and I just feel his pain so bad
How on earth did you miss the scream at the middle and end of Damone? The latter which lasts an obscene number of bars. Damone is a hidden track from Around the Fur and possibly my favorite song on the entire album. Please check it out if you haven't.
You should check out Strangejuice - Stain; Sugar Lane; Horses in Hollywood; and Beethoven, Henry's Fire (he has a pretty wide range of vocals, these are just some where he is screaming)
Chino is such a badass!!! He can go from one of the Charlie st growling sounds to the most pained vocals, to the beauty of his voice on a song like Minerva. Destined and Chino----- such good stuff!!!!
I’m realizing I only know this band from maybe 3 songs, I need to explore their discography a bit more. They could have easily debuted this year and still have a relevant and distinct sound.
When i heard Embers by lamb of god and he started to sing - I remember i didnt know how was in the song too - i told my bf that his voide there sounds like a beam of light bursting from dark and heavy clouded skies. I am in love with his voice
Chino many times doesn't scream but it sounds like it. It's the effects. I've heard so many songs again with proper headphones and I noticed how he wasn't even screaming.
