No,thers nothing controversial about Combat mission. Thats absurd thing to say. The game was released over 10 years ago, infact,a DLC / update adding various mechanized vics for ukrainian and RU forces have been postponed out of respect for the current situation in ukraine. CM series of games are amazing and have ZERO propaganda, and are mil sims at heart
I agree with this. Remember that this was released even before 2014. I definitely wouldn't say Black Sea has caused any controversy aside from people going "Huh, well that's a little awkward". This is primarily because, indeed, the Combat Mission games are all simulation games that don't have any side-narrative involved along the sides that could be interpreted as "taking sides". In fact, I believe I read somewhere that the developers have occasionally been criticized for seemingly tilting the balance in favor of those opposing the Russian forces. However, now that an actual similar conflict has broken out, it has turned out that this was probably just a relatively accurate professional assessment by the guys at Battlefront. Don't quote me on this, I don't remember where I read or heard this.
The Syrian Civil War wasn't controversial enough for them because the developers of Syrian Warfare are making a RTS game about a Russo-American in Ukraine war called Front Edge (Передний край). There's some footage on RU-vid, and it looks pretty decent. They also worked on Terminator: Dark Fate - Defiance before the war put a stop to that, so the games play similar.
I have to say it's kind of funny that both of the speculative conflicts modeled by Battlefront in the modern warfare Combat Mission games (Shock Force and Black Sea) have both have had real-life conflicts that closely resemble them. IMO it's kind of weird that you praised the storyline of Syrian Warfare though. The game itself actually isn't half bad (if pretty generic) but the story strongly veers into propaganda territory at times. There's this mission where you (as the Russian forces) get to save a bunch of international press correspondents from a building. At the end, they thank you for saving them, and your guys tell them they're welcome, but they hope that they will now finally start telling the truth in the news. And the journalist agree to "finally tell the truth". There's a bunch of that kind of stuff in the game. Definitely not a dry Combat Mission-like simulation game :) Personally, I'm fine in general with most depicted conflicts, as long as the subject matter is treated pretty matter-of-factly. As soon as I start to feel the opinions of the writers or developers seep in, I can sometimes get a little uncomfortable. To be clear: I have this feeling for all parties involved. I have little taste for political rhetoric coming from any side in games depicting real conflicts. But that's just me of course. People can enjoy whatever they want.
I don't have a problem with the games as someone said below, we play the Nazis in games. I think someone on Matrix said a maid saw him playing as the Nazis in a game and quit the next day lol.
