1951 brings us Commie noir but not as much as expected. The Alger Hiss case had wrapped up in 1950 and Joe McCarthy had begun his part of the Red Scare that same year. Maybe more commies will come later. Racketeering and crusading DA noirs seems to be on the rise. Let’s face it: Commies are boring. Spencer Tracy and John Sturges teaming up in a noir is not something I expected. Robert Mitchum, Robert Ryan, and Lizabeth Scott is a great noir trio. Loretta Young, what a surprise, now 37 years old, 3 years past an Academy Award, and soon to decamp to a very successful new career in television. She does give Lizabeth Scott some competition in the hairstyle race. Nice to see Michael Rennie taking time out of warning Earth about its nuclear arms race. Ginger Rogers plus Doris Day means musical comedy. Throw in Ronald Reagan, yeah, okay. Wait - a Klan noir? Did not see that coming. Written by Richard Brooks? Dutch is the good guy, of course. I want to see Storm Warning. John Garfield and Shelley Winters is a great noir pairing. Dick Powell, 46 year old song and dance man, found a home in noir back in 1944 and never disappoints. One of my favorite films - Detective Story. Kirk Douglas’ intensity and William Wyler’s direction turn the familiar crusading cop story on its head. In some ways it’s hard to watch. A Place in the Sun. Noir? Yeah. And Elizabeth Taylor dethrones Lizabeth Scott as hairstyle queen. Another favorite - Ace in the Hole. Kirk Douglas’ performance makes this picture and Billy Wilder’s direction makes a biting, searing commentary on the early postwar era. An underappreciated film. Strangers on a Train is not Hitchcock’s best, but it is Hitchcock. Good enough. On to 1952, and the world’s first H-Bomb test. Bye bye Enewetak.
