Bill, I needed to hear all of this today. Especially not focusing on how I sound, but rather on how I feel, and taking the direction given as a starting point, but not as set in stone. Thank you.☺️

Thanks a lot for this Bill! I am 100% guilty of all the things you said! After watching this, I realized that I still have a lot of work to do with my voiceovers. Success may seem far at this point, but I will eventually get there, especially now I am getting the right information one day at a time.

I'm very impressed with how you explain authenticity, and how voice actors need to "own it" rather than to sound like somebody else, or worse, a robot.

Fantastic. Thanks for this, Sir. In my experience of doing VO's for 20 years, everything is situational and every gig is different or has the same differences. Sometimes the agency directs me, other times the client, and many times 7 people including the Sound engineer, Production House reps , agency reps and clients simultaneously want to give input and that is a nightmare. Bill is correct..Get an idea of the direction but make it your own. I did a commercial last weekend for a bank and credit card company geared toward a younger demographic. The direction was: Make it hype but not too hyped but still sound authoritative but not too corporate but still convincing. I just replied yeah yeah yeah and After hearing the music for the video which was loud and energetic it was impossible to use the direction that was given.

Thanks Bill, for another great video. Even though I’ve done lots of spots, industrials, on-hold messaging, audiobooks, etc. over decades, I come to you for refreshers on technique, marketing, and many other fine points in our work. I have and will continue to recommend you to voice talents new and experienced alike.

Again and always, such good and obviously experienced advice here! Mistake 1 and the solution you offer has stuck with me, as I remember you mentioning before to throw away the specs, to an extent, and focus more on how you feel, who you are in the script. This alone has really helped transform my deliveries. Thank you!

I appreciate you talking about the feeling of the read. What is ultimately important is that the read is believable. Also looking at the directions given but learning how to interpret it for the read. Don’t disregard but learn to interpret it. Focus on how you feel. Focus on thoughts and on meaning. That connects with people. And “ communicate the phrase.” I come from a television and theater training background and I appreciate your points about feeling the read. Thanks. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 #IncreaseTheBattingAvg

I've personally found numbers 2 & 3 especially important for me recently. I default to technical aspects and come off as wooden. But I've started to work on big picture and feel instead and have improved 100%. I still have plenty of work to put in to be consistent but oh my how much it helps. Thanks for posting this Bill!

Hello, Bill. I'm still in the technique phase of voice over training (and someday, I'd love to take a class with you! But I am learning so much through these videos you post, thank you!) My coach said to me that we are conduits of emotion, not information. This goes along with what you've said here. Emotion is so important and connecting on a level beyond conveying information. Thank you so much!

Really loving the content of your videos. Great job on all this stuff. Just a question. Do you think even a really cheap XRL mic would be better than any USB mic? I ask this because I'm starting to see XRL mics for as low as $40-$50 on Amazon. The Fifine K669B is USB but has insanely good reviews.

Hi Bill, I just jumped into voice over and have really appreciated your videos. They’ve helped me navigate as I get my feet set in this industry. What really resonated with me here was mistake number one, but in a slightly different way. I don’t necessarily get concerned with my voice as I’m recording, but I go crazy when I listen back. I feel like it sounds dead and boring, like a deep and rich river of mud. I’ve spent hours messing with EQ, and compression, limiting, etc. I’ve taught myself way more about audio editing than actually being good at performance. I know it’s a problem, a big problem. So why can’t I stop? Do other people suffer from this or am I unique in my insanity? I’m at the point know where I can’t even tell how my voice sounds - like when you say a word over and over again until it loses all meaning. I think someone needs to take my DAW away.

You're not alone here. This is very common with people starting out. Just remember that as you continue to do jobs you will slowly worry about your sound less and less. It might not happen overnight, but you'll eventually get to the point where you won't feel that way nearly as much. I highly recommend writing down a personal story or memory before you read through a script. This can really help you connect to the material. I hope that helps! Just keep going. You will get there.

Hey Bill! I have been following you for a couple of weeks now, so forgive me if you have already covered this. What should I look for in a good coach? How do I distinguish between the coaches who will actually benefit my career and the ones who just want my money to supplement their income?

Thanks Bill. I really needed to hear this today☺️. I keep re-recording my commercial demo reel because I’m micro-focusing on the sound of my voice🤦🏽‍♀️ I was just about to go re-record it right now, and then your video popped up in my notifications. I’m just going to leave it as is, and see if anything happens on Fiverr🤞🏽

Hey Bill. I’d like to be a voice over talent, however, I’m not sure if I really cut the mustard. Do you evaluate voices and offer candid feedback? I have a issue with s’s, and I’ve worked on that through my life. I’ve been a public speaker for most of my life, and I suppose public speaking and voice over has some similarities. Still, if you do offer feedback, how do I get an audition recording to you and what are your rates? Thank you.
@VoiceCoach-BillDeWees
@VoiceCoach-BillDeWees 2 года назад
Hi CJ! I don't do individual voice lessons or coaching. I do group coaching in my program the Voice Over Blueprint. If you've done public speaking, you'll already on your way. It's much less about the voice and more about tenacity if you want to be successful in this business.

I’ve been trying to get off the ground for a month, and I can not get Adobe Audition to record in stereo. I have a Ur12 and I’m ready to throw my laptop against the wall. It shouldn’t be this fking difficult for it to record in stereo.
