Should have been titled “The Top 5 Best Cheap Bowie Knives for Survival “ The SOG and the Becker are the only two that can be called “best” in a top 5 lineup. The TOPS Harpoon is an outstanding piece of kit, but it isn’t a Bowie knife. LOTS of much better, actual Bowie knives on the market than any of the others...

James Bowie had no direct "descendants" however he is a distant relative of mine. Yes, the family name is pronounced BOO-EE. And ironically, there currently is no absolute consensus of opinion as to exactly what the knife that Jim carried with him at the Alamo actually looked like apart from what was described as it having a clipped front blade. Also, in actual knife fighting, the whole sharpened edge of the blade of the Bowie knife is held facing upward unlike what you might see in some of the movies lol.

Tele Visor I cannot remember who it was that I talked to. It was many many years ago. But it irks me to hear the name mispronounced. James Bowie’s history had a substantial influence on me when I read about him as a kid. As much, or more, than anyone else in history.

@@arctodussimus6198 First, I'm honored that you took the time to respond with such a great comment! I am really dating myself, but when I was very young, there was a show on tv called "The Adventures Of Jim Bowie" and it was around that time that my paternal grandma kinda matter of factly told me that James Bowie was actually a distant relative of ours. Well, being so young, I simply thought that it was cool to see a weekly tv show based on someone who was actually a family member. But as I grew older, studied about him in school, and read several biographies written about Jim Bowie, like you I too began to see that he had an impact, not just on Texas history, but on U.S. history, as well. Like David Crockett's life, Jim's life was the stuff of both legend and fact. But no matter what some people may think about Jim's more infamous exploits (like being a slave trader and a crooked land speculator) as a Texan, I am indebted to him, Crockett, Travis, and all of the other men in the Alamo who willingly sacrificed their lives to provide Sam Houston enough time to defeat Santa Anna and thus make it possible for me and others to live here. Arctodus, please be well during these times health-wise and otherwise.

Nope, he's correct. I'd argue it's a 10" minimum blade length. If not, they're just survival knives. A good survival knife is definitely necessary, but it's not a Bowie. Just because a blade has a clip point, doesn't make it a Bowie.

@cha5
@cha5 3 года назад
Gunr Well for starters don’t rush into it, Do some research first, Go to Bladeforums.com and check under ‘custom knives’ You can find out about bladesmiths and knife makers all over the country there, It all depends on what you’re looking for in the way of a knife and what you want to spend for a good custom knife as opposed to something out of a Chinese or Pakistani factory, it’s something you’d want to research, (things like 1095 steel vs 5160 steel, a stainless steel knife won’t rust but it’s not very durable either, and if you want a full or hidden tang) the lowest price I’d recommend looking for a good custom Bowie would start at $199 and go up from there from there, they can go from the hundreds to the thousands depending on what you’re looking for in the way of a knife, You could try to get a craftsman to make you a knife but it would be easier and maybe cheaper to go to a ABS approved knife show in your state and see what you can find there, a lot of the best knifesmiths will go to them to sell what they’ve made if you want something in the way of a good quality custom knife at an affordable price. My own favorite custom Bowie knife is a 16 inch Haag Bowie made out of 1095 high carbon steel with a full tang and a stainless steel D guard with a south Texas pecan handle that came to $300.

With the possible exception of the Cold Steel, these knives are shit . . . . garbage. The blades are all 'saber grind' which is a cheap and marginal way to grind a blade. On top of which, you should NEVER use your fighting knife to chop wood or do other camp tasks. The functioning part of a fighting knife is its edge. Any knife is only as good or as bad as it's edge and a fighting knife must be kept as close to razor sharp as possible. Camp tasks beat the hell out of the knife's edge.

I wouldn't give you any more than 2 cents for these knives and never really use them for a survival encounter If a cougar came at you from behind or a bear and grabed you around the chest, If that knife was on your waist there is no way you could get it out to fend off the attack, I would have my knife tied to my leg below my knee, and the blade would be a very narrow knife for penetrating the hide of any animal, Those knives you show are mainly used for axe and carving or show purposes not encounters as mentioned,
