I’m a Chelsea fan but vidic won 3 league titles in a row, a prem and CL double and back to back CL finals in a 3 yr period all whilst playing against far better team players than are playing today.

He played his role and was more than good enough to be in the team but if u swapped them out for another top midfielder u wouldn’t see much difference cus they weren’t that key a player. In Vidic’s time, there was Maldini, Nesta, Canavarro, Terry, Ferdinand, etc. There hasn’t really been another all time great CB in Van Dijk’s time

think thats just nostalgia talking reality is you have got cb's today as good as those ones go back and watch those games from back then you will see that even attackers who were not big names or legendry attackers were able to get past those defenders the same as they do now. People always tend to think older is better I noticed I remember watching a Bill shankly interview a couple months ago and he said he thinks the players back in 30s or 40s are better than the ones now (1970s) and just think of all the legendry players from the 1970s.I never really understood the argument that older players are always better its ridiculous to assume the level of football would have suddenly dropped if anything the level should get better as the years go on like back in the 2000s people would have been saying the players back then are not as good as the ones in the 80s.The players back then were tougher though I will say that they could take a tackle

Also look at the defence for that season, at the start of the season it was moreno, lovren, matip i think and clyne. 17/18 was the year where robbo and trent didn’t play for the first half cus they were a new signing and a youngster, it was literally the second half of that season where they started playing robbo trent and van dijk and that’s why we got top 4. We wouldn’t of got to the final in 17/18 without van dijk and obviously alisson was a top addition the next year but it’s not van dijks fault he joined halfway through a season so the impact wasn’t as visible
Fernando Torres won us our first Champions League in 2012 so did Havertz,Werner,Ziyech and Pulisic in our UCL run in 2021 and yet all of the above are considered flops which is mental but true man life is complicated as a Chelsea fan😑
luis díaz on his day is one of the best wingers in the world, there’s maybe only a few i’d actually swap him with directly. Vini, leao and mbappe might be the only players i’d directly swap him for. Numbers wise he hasn’t been great but it doesn’t always tell the story, he’s not had a proper run of games since his injury, just as he was finding form ofcourse the thing with his dad happened, i think the second half of this season he’ll secure his place as a starter and he could be the reason we win the league. Even against newcastle although he didn’t score or assist he won a penalty and created the first goal from almost nothing

Prime Van Dijk was not better than Jaap Staam. What Jaap was capable of doing in his era, VVD has been trying to emulate in his game to quite a large extent. They both possess very similar attributes.

I mean VVD obviously had an impact, at Liverpool it seems like only VVD gets the praise for elevating the team, meanwhile Salah, Mane, Firmino, Alisson, Robertson and Trent all elevated the Liverpool side when they came into the team. I do personally think that Salah and Alisson were the player who had the biggest impact on Liverpool, while VVD just helped make the foundation Klopp built more secure, but last season proved that even when VVD has a stinker season, then Salah and Alisson will still keep Liverpool somewhat afloat. 1.Suarez 2.Vidic 3.VVD 4.Bruno Fernandez 5.Torres(he was just better at Liverpool lets be honest)
