In Civil aviation, there are two main industries for airplane buyers. There is the certified airplane; in which an aircraft goes through different phases, testing and certification process. And there is the experimental airplane; which you buy a kit and build the airplane yourself. I personally have always been fascinated with the idea of building my own flying machine. With an experimental airplane, you have a hand in literally everything that goes into the airplane. You get to pick your own engine, avionics and interior design. That’s freedom on a different level. That said, safety remains the number one factor when it comes to flying and aviation in general. So if you ever decide to go this route, always think of safety first!
In this video I picked out five of the top single engine airplanes that are in the experimental category. Keep in mind that the ranking of these airplanes are based on several factors. Namely: cost, performance, design, comfort and utility. The airplanes listed in this video are:
Lancer evolution - From Lancair. This is one of the fastest kit build airplanes out there. It is also one of the most expensive to build or own. The kit alone starts at over $600,000. A finished airplane will run you anywhere from $1.2 million to $1.5 million. The cost is mostly due to the turbine jet engine that powers this aircraft. We’re talking a lot of horses here. You have three different engine choices of 867HP, 750HP and 550HP. For those who build this airplane, it’s really about speed and how fast they can get to their destination. This airplane will cruise at well over 300 knots, close to 400 miles per hour and it will climb at 4000 feet a minute. Those are performance numbers you typically find in jets.
Glacier III - From Glasair. The Glasair III retractable gear is also one of the fastest single engine airplanes out there. And the Glasair is not only fast, it is also nimble and very sporty. Frankly it takes a lot more pilot skills to fly this bird. This airplane will climb at close to 3000 feet a minute on a normal calm day and it will cruise at close to 300 miles per hour while only burning 13 to 15 gallons of fuel per hour. Talk about fuel efficiency. The Glasair also has a nice roomy cabin for 2. Spacious with more than enough head room for taller people. A complete Glasair III can be bought anywhere from $145,000 - $250,000.
Cubcrafter Xcub - This airplane is built for the absolute nomad or the adventurous pilot. One of the better bush airplanes out there with amazing capabilities and useful load. The Xcub will take off and land in the shortest distance, basically this is an airplane you can fly right out of your backyard; joking. The Xcub model is factory built but you can buy a kit with similar or better performance and build your own airplane. Best thing about the Xcub is the simplicity of flying it. Needless to say that cubcrafters took their time making the interior space very welcoming. A brand new Xcub sells for $317,000 but you can find older models used for much less.
Sling 4 - From The Airplane factory. The sling is one of my personal favorite experimental airplanes. Not only because it is affordable and light, but because it is very cost efficient. Unlike other 4 seater airplanes in the market, the sling 4 only runs on a small 115 hp turbo charged engine. That power output although small, guarantees you very low fuel burn during your flight. The sling 4 only burns about 6 gallons of fuel per hour while traveling 140 miles per hour. This airplane has 4 seats and yes you can put a person on all four seats and still have a good amount of travel range.
Vans RV-10 - In the experimental world, Vans is arguably the king. It has the most airplanes actively flying in the air and also being built. Last I checked, there are well over 10,000 registered vans RV aircrafts. The RV-10 is an amazing 4 seater airplane with great performance. Performance comparable to the Cirrus SR22, a plane that cost nearly four times the price of an RV-10. Unlike the Cirrus though, one of the best feature of the RV-10 is it’s landing capabilities. It has a shorter take off and landing distance, and you can land in unpaved runways. This airplane will cruise at 200 miles per hour, climb rate is 2000 feet a minute and have a useful load of over 1000 pounds. The All that performance and capabilities for only $200,000? talk about a steal.

I dont see any usefulness to these little kit planes currently on the market that have no utility where you cant put a folding bike in the back seat, if you can even get anything in there in the first place. On top of that your wasting your time calling Uber everywhere you go. Until someone builds a lancair or Cirrus "type acft" with stretched fuselage and cabin doors on the back like a Bonanza you wont have a kit plane thats not just plain stupid.

And that's one man's opinion. Many small airports have fee loaner cars (but as a pilot, you knew that, right?) And many airports have restaurants within walking distance. (Heck, the Rock and Roll HOF is withing walking distance of an airport!) And your friends and relatives will pick you up when you go to visit them and land at the local airport.

Just realistically, most aspiring pilots need to go down the list, down to around the 1970s Cessna 172 area of the list, if the list kept on going down. May not be fast but they are safe..

I met Van when he was building the prototype RV-4 at Hillsboro Airport, Hillsboro, Oregon. I had a friend who worked for him , as I did briefly back in the early eighties. His aircraft kits have always been top quality, and he never inflated performance figures for them. Ease of construction, reliability, and performance as advertised have made his planes some of the most popular world-wide.

Van's is hard to beat for #1 spot, it makes up 25% of the experimental planes, and as you stated, the community is great with support you get, and just all around total performance plane, Van's comes through. Carbon Cub are sweet planes, but I think you'll find the Bearhawks ever bit as sweet, compare the specs side by side, most are surprised at the results.

I completed an RV-10 kit in my spare time (I am a commercial Aircraft Mechanic) for a friend's father. With the full leather luxury trim kit, 300hp Lycoming and proper stick control it was a fantastic aircraft. I cannot say enough about the quality of the package and technical backup that Van's supplies. The plane was borrowed continuously by a certified test pilot where it was hangared. If you have never built a kit plane before, these can be built if you have basic hand skills and the CORRECT tools.

Probably wouldn't make your list but I'm sticking with the Zenith CH701 particularly for it's STOL capability. It's so convenient to hop from a property to the airport and then back when I'm done with a longer trip. Not only nice to avoid the road traffic but it's nice to fly directly onto a farm or ranch without anyone seeing you coming or going necessarily. And the price is right for that convenience factor. It's not fast, it's not pretty, but it gets me where I need to be and I don't need much to take off or land.

Hey dude, if you like the Vans, check out the Zenith Ch640. It's basically a kit plane version of the ch2000, which is a 4 place certified aircraft. I don't think very many of them have been built, but there are several of their certified counterparts still flying so it's a proven design. If you're really bold, you can get plans for 500 bucks and scratch build it. That's what I want to do. There's a guy in my local EAA chapter that scratch built a sonex and I had the chance to sit in that. I'm a little too tall for the legacy Sonex, but point being had he not told me it was scratch built, I'd have assumed it was a kit. Seeing in person that it can be done and done right is a big confidence booster. Several kit builders, it's actually a VAA chapter, so there are several A&P's and LSA gurus to annoy :D I watch a lot of your videos, are you planning on doing a kit plane at some point and if so, what are you gonna build?

Will work on it. I just uploaded a video on Amphibians, although the Seawind is not included. Will be in future uploads. Thanks.

Great video! Can you buy one of these and get a cfi to teach you to fly in one of these?

Many of the selections here seem to be favored because of their speed. Don't get me wrong, I really love speed. But, when it comes to folks building kitplanes many do not get completed because of the very large amount of labor required. Or, they end up languishing in a garage for 10 years before they are finished. For that reason I think that expected build time should be a significant factor when choosing a kit. The Zenair products are quick to build, but slow to fly...and that works for many people. The new Rans S21 has my eye for being even quicker to build and recovers a fair amount of the speed that I like. If only it had 4 places. Both of those are also much cheaper than the choices in the video.

Good point. I didn't include build time because honestly that will very from builder to builder. Also with build assist programs available for almost all these aircrafts, it's tough to put a mark on which airplane will have the quickest or best build time.

Mike, Any chance you might review a Wittman W10 Tailwind in the future. Complete lack of reviews on RU-vid of this fantastic airplane.

I like your videos and enjoy following you. I'd like to take exception to your comment about Experimental aircraft. Some ARE kit built. Others are plans built, I've built two, I and some are, like myself, built from my own design. It was 30-years in the design stages thus is dated, but it is mine. It might not go over 100 knots, but if it gets into the air, I will have accomplished my dream. I thought I'd bring that minor omission to your attention. Otherwise keep up the good work.
