- ABOUT THIS VIDEO -
Canon and Epson are essentially in a dogfight for the title of best photo printer. While there are other producers of portable printers, when it comes to desktop picture printers of the highest calibre, these two are truly the only players in town. This is the place to come if you want to mount, frame, or display your images.
The good news is that there is still a wide range of options even with only two main manufacturers. Offering a variety of printers at different price points, including letter-size and large-format models, is something that both Canon and Epson have excelled at.

There are many printers out there but not mentioning the SureColor printers from Epson stands out a bit. Have the SureColor 800, now replaced by the 900 model on the market. And it prints long prints from a roller too! Outstanding printers for photos. Almost never use the SureColor for anything else. For regular printing documents or whatever I use the Epson Ecotank 2880 which works fine.

If you're just printing photos for your own personal enjoyment and memories, you really can't afford to NOT buy the ecotank. Yes, the upfront cost is expensive. But the tanks last for ages before you have to refill. I have two eco-tank printers- one for photos, one for documents. Despite needing to print a fair amount for course work and for communicating with builders, I only have had to re-fill the tanks three times in the past 6 years - I've printed thousands of pages. I've just recently brought the ET-5800. The picture quality is more than decent, and it costs mere cents per photo. Cartridges are a rip-off, and should only be tolerated if you have no other choice. If you do have a choice, go with the eco-tank printers. It WILL save you money in the long-run.

Great video. Thanks..... but regarding the Canon Pro-1000,- you didnt say, that this is an A2 printer.... not A4 or A3, but A2. This is a masive printer, that gives the best prints I have ever seen,- and I have been in the field of photography for over 30 years now. AND this printer CAN do roll prints for panoramic prints since the latest software update. Just to tell you and others...... cheers from Denmark.

I don't know if we should compare quality of photos for 6-ink printers vs eg 9-ink. Usually gamut, dynamic range of the latter is much more better. I waste lot of money for "economic" photo printers before I discovered Epson SC-P600 and similar. Are you sure that mentioned PRO-1000 is comparable at all to eg. I used to use an Epson ET-2550 ru-vid.comUgkxciSwynMJ7PnUvvx11rewiu-yFBkZTl53 , an early model of the ink tank style. It worked well, but had one nuisance that drove me up the wall; if you didn't put it in high quality print mode you'd get a streak across the page. I'm happy to say I have yet to see this with this printer. The print quality has been fantastic so far, the set up was super easy. All in all I'm very happy with this printer.

Tank printer's cost more and are pretty bare minimal in features compared to cartridge printers. That's where the tank printers get you. The cartridge printers cost less but where these companies make their money is by you constantly buying the expensive ink cartridge replacements. You can get a cartridge printer that is loaded with features like touchscreen controls, scan, copy, fax, auto two sided printing, front loading paper trays, automated etc. and they'll cost you far less than a bottom of the line tank printer with no touchscreen, no auto two sided printing, no fax, no auto feed. And that's where they get you by selling you a bare bones printer to make up for the loss of selling you expensive cartridges. Depending on how much you print you may come out ahead or break even depending on when the printer fails. Printers need to be used on a regular basis to keep the ink moving through the system otherwise the ink will start gunking up the system. Should do something once every week or two like print something or do a cleaning cycle or something. Something like that would waste ink so maybe a tank printer may be feasible if the ink cost is less and holds more than a cartridge.

@MrMikewr
@MrMikewr Год назад
The Canon Pro 1000 can print up to a maximum printable length of 47.2 inches (1200.0 mm). Is that not what you would consider to be a "longer landscape print"? If that's not panorama I don't know what is. The printer also uses 12 ink cartridges plus the chroma optimizer, not 10. You need to do a better job of research.
@UnconventionalReasoning
@UnconventionalReasoning Год назад
If one checks the Canon website or B&H, the maximum paper size is listed as 17x22", and a max print length of 25.5". The firmware upgrade to get the 47" prints is very poorly advertised.
@citroenfan8930
@citroenfan8930 Год назад
First off - over all print quality for photos is based solely on the accuracy of the icc profile for the paper being used. So comparing quality differences between printers is, basically, meaningless. Individual icc profiles need to be made for each type of paper surface and manufacturer for each individual printer to make any comparison valid. One need to use an X-Rites spectrophotometer and accompanying software , or equivalent, to make any such comparison's really meaningful. And if the computer screen being used to view does not have its own icc profile - getting consistent, accurate results is nothing more that a crap shoot. My old Epson 3880 Pro (17"x what ever) so set up rivals the quality and print longevity of traditional silver based photo prints. And I am speaking as a former photo engineer with FujiFilm.
@charlesverbruggen1011
@charlesverbruggen1011 Год назад
Icc profiles have nothing to do with bronzing from a pigment printer on glossy paper. You can make as many profiles as you like, bronzing will always occur in your prints, this has to do with the microscopic particles of the pigment ink. Dye ink on glossy paper the colors will be more beautiful than pigment on glossy paper and an icc profile will not change that.
@citroenfan8930
@citroenfan8930 Год назад
@@charlesverbruggen1011 Did not say they will - that was just an inference on your part 😀 Bronzing is a function of a few factors - dye vs pigment inks and not only paper surfaces but also brands. With the latter two it has to due with surface 'gloss' - the higher the gloss the greater the problem can be. And none can match the 'smoothness' of traditional silver based prints. My point only had to do with trying to compare different printer's characteristics to one and other with the generic profiles supplied by the manufacture. They can range from OK to pure junk. The comment about saturation of color with the one unit - that problem could easily be corrected with a decent icc profile. As an aside - have been in continuing discussions with X-Rite about including an actual icc editor in their current iterations of the i-Profile software which was available in earlier versions. The current iteration consistently produces a magenta/red shift, on a 21 step gray scale of between 2-3 cc's starting around step 14 and visible up to step 18/19 as 20 and 21 are to dark to see unless viewed under very strong light.

@markmalasics3413
@markmalasics3413 Год назад
@@penelopebranson1565 Not the way I see it. Let's say someone purchased the Pro-1000. Let's add sales tax and all the costs of the extras like paper and ink. I think we can agree we'd be somewhere around $1400. That's without making a single print. For around $20 I can get a 16X20 color print done by a pro lab. And it will be done correctly. If not, I send it back with a dissatisfied comment and I get a redone print at no extra cost to me. I can do that for about 200 prints before I reach the $1400 threshold. 200 prints using a self purchased printer like the Pro-1000 would certainly require additional supplies of ink, adding more to the cost. So unless a person is actually a Pro Lab with a significant customer base and a huge volume of work behind it, I can't see the advantage.
