+Andreas Seifer Mandatory option to chase people who run away if you don't have a ranged attack and aren't an extremely slow/heavy character. Captain Meme also uses his to start up his air combo (that will be inevitably air dodged.), so there's that. If rolling wasn't so flawless, there'd be reason to not dash attack.

Thank you for the response! With arcade sticks, there are multiple ways to hold the controller and, when I first started playing traditional fighters, changing my grip really did improve my execution (tech skill?). Good to know I'm not missing anything here!

@Kyomaku

+Munzu Not really a habit for me, but I sometimes do this and regret it everytime, should just throw the attack quickly and get out of there, holding just gives the enemy cruicial time to prepare and react to punish.

The reason lower level players shield grab a lot is because when they play other low or even mid level players, they can't do safe pressure. So when a player keeps playing their friend's fox that can't L cancel his nair shines, they frequently succeed in shield grabbing him and think (whether it's subconscious or not) "hey, that keeps working on fox so I'm gonna do that regularly." This is a habit I've had to break myself and I just wanted to give some insight onto why players do that, because you couldn't understand why we would even choose this horrible option.
@Eltrotraw
@Eltrotraw 9 лет назад
100% agreed - my first go to response to Falco shield pressure was shield grab because the players I was used to playing couldn't work around it. When I did meet a player who could suddenly I had to relearn what I knew of the matchup.
@ThePharphis

Focusing tech over fundamentals. I see it mostly with people whose first time playing Melee was after EVO. I think it stems from a lack of familiarity or even comfort with the core mechanics.

Everything in this list, with the exception of 5, isn't necessarily bad. Doing things repetitively and becoming predictable is bad, which is the message you should be trying to get across instead of saying "this is what noobs do..." because in the end of the day all the tools at your disposal are valuable. I'm teaching a few new players who have never played melee before. Literally every single time they miss a tech near the ledge, I wavedash back and charge up-smash. Eventually you would think they would want to not take a backflip bicycle kick to the jaw (and also losing their souls to my library), yet it's been like 3 months and everyone still does it. Feels bad man; it's got to the point I say out loud "DON'T DO IT" as soon as they miss the tech and they still do.
@BlurbyDestroyerOfWorlds
@BlurbyDestroyerOfWorlds 8 лет назад
The biggest mistake of all is underestimating your opponent. It's better to go into a battle expecting to lose rather then win. Because If you go into a battle expecting to fourstock, you don't try as hard, and if you GET fourstocked you'll be pissed, and then you will watch the salt consume you, and if you DO fourstock, you'll just be like, "Oh okay then." If you go into a battle expecting to get fourstiocked, you try harder, and if you do get foursticked, instead of being mcsalterton, you're just like "Okay, too bad." also if you DO fourstock you'll be like Etika's smash 4 dlc reaction "YESSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!" And that's better for both you and your opponent. A wise man once said "Salt decreases the body and spirit, and without it, the body and spirit increase." IN general, the biggest noob mistake (and pro mistake, I've seen this before) is underestimating your opponent/going into a battle expecting to win.

Totally true 100% with you on that.
@BlurbyDestroyerOfWorlds

at the same time though It's not hard to resist wobbling with ice climbers just think to yourself "If I wobble this stock, I will be trashtalked to the point where I won't want to wobble anymore, and I won't feel good about that. i understand that my inner troll wants to be free, but I have to resist the temptation." This is a huge setback for Ics mains beacuse they can't decide if they want to wobble or not. It's like back in the day when I mained Kirby in every smash game EVER and I used to be the most trolliest player EVER. I learned that there is more to kirby then just troll. Bair is a great kill move, fair can combo into dair, nair and Up air. upair works like pikachu's , (which is one of the better Up airs in the game,) nair is a great stage spike, Side b is damaging on ground and can Surprisingly wrack up some Okay damage in air if used with the right time and spacing. Dair is a good multi-use small spike for gimps and combos into swallowcide, backthrow, fthrow, upthrow, and downthrow are all good, and kirby has one of the BEST recoveries in the game.

Everytime I come off the respawn platform after a stock, some of my friends will always do the exact same thing that I've pointed out to them SEVERAL TIMES: they go to one side of the stage or the other, and immediately double jump up to the platform. It's so easy to read that I'll just come off of the platform and put an attack up high on the side of the stage they're on, and they jump into it 99% of the time.

The epic skill to never be able to make friends who you can practice with even after 2 years of going to tourneys. Another big noob move is to play only as fox and practice all kinds of things by yourself and get your hopes up to maybe win one game at your next local toruney, then losing to people you haven't seen before.

+Jesus Gomez Dolphin Slash out of shield is pretty good if you have a platform above you to land on. Other than that, wavedashing is generally your best bet, rolling works but it'll get punished unless they're just completely not ready for it. The best counter to shield pressure is to avoid getting stuck in shield though.

***** I can understand the adaptability to a specific game engine and why people stick to specific games in a fair and unbiased world and what each of the games have advantages in. Smash 1: The original and creator. A trip down memory lane. While I love this gem, it hasn't aged very well, and the flaws are VERY apparent in this game. That doesn't mean I won't play it from time to time, though. Melee: Hyper Offense. Usually, the one that starts a combo is the one that finishes it, hence why characters like Fox, Falco, Captain Falcon, Marth, and Roy are relatively popular. Let's be honest, though. This offensive bias and the few flaws left in the game is what draws me away. Played this game for years and I still think it's clunky--not as much as the first game, but still quite clunky. Can I play a decent Melee? I guess so. I'd rather not, personally. The worst part about this is that there are diehards that will "defend" this game and send death threats to Sakurai for making two more sequels that "ruined the already perfect engine", when in reality Sakurai regrets making this game in its entirety. All I can say is, so long as Pichu is nowhere to be found, I could care less for either the love or hate side. I like the game. As far as options go as you mentioned, I will not lie: you're correct. To play Melee, it requires a ridiculous amount of skill and know-how of every possible combo option and move-reading in order to actually be pretty good at it. I actually have respect for people that can play this game well and NOT downtalk the other games like degenerates (I was on the opposite end of the spectrum at one point). All in all, for those that actually avidly play this game more than the others, have at it. For those that decide they want to bash Smash 4 for no reason whatsoever other than "Sakurai must die" and "It's not Melee", you're not stopping me from playing it...also, you might need counselling for your violent outbursts. Wanting someone that hasn't done any actual harm to another human being to die is...just no. Brawl: Hyper...Defense? Yeah, the speed is definitely slowed down here. Not quite Smash 1 levels, but it's a noticeable drop. Whenever people complain that Melee was too broken because its engine bias, I always mention Meta Knight in Brawl as a debunk because, and I'm just going to be honest here, he's more broken than anything in the rest of the series. The random tripping is absolutely irritating as well, so I can't really love this game as much as I'd want. Was it fun? Sure was. Solid Snake in Smash? More, please! Project M: I understand the "why" of it and how it succeeded with removing the clunkiness of Melee, but the people behind it are so full of themselves that they bring out the worst of the "Melee Elitists" as everyone else calls them. Once again, I find Melee too Hyper Offensive for my tastes, but I can still stomach a good round from time to time. With this, it's actually harder considering that most anybody behind this badmouths Brawl any second they can. It's actually kind of sad, really. All the cool easter eggs and mods that can be combined with this are fantastic, but knowing that the basis of Project M is made by a group of ignorant people is...heartbreaking, and I think that there are unnecessary changes to characters that would've been fine otherwise. Smash 4: FINALLY! The perfect balance! And look: Mewtwo was made better (but don't tell a Melee Elitist I said this or they'll flame me for liking a game more than Melee), the engine is a combination of the general engine of Brawl with a speed boost like Melee, but maintaining a more balanced speed, buffs and nerfs were implemented that needed to happen, and the game itself plays much better than any addition before it. It feels...right to me. I can't really describe it besides that. It feels like everything was finally balanced to near perfection. Combos can still be done, but without even more attention to them, they can be broken and countered. Defensive characters and strategies can finally be realized at their full potential. Omega Stages everywhere! What's not to love? So...yeah. My opinions on the games usually don't match up with most everybody else, but I can't hate any of the games. I just have a personal preference. Why should I hate on people that prefer Melee over the others for their own rational reasons? But that's just me.

+Paul Mann IV Melee isn't _that_ much more offensive than the other games innately. I also wouldn't call modifications of equations and values plugged into equations that determine properties of characters attacks and other things something you could attribute to differences in the engine. But that's the way smashers describe it because... I don't know.

Donovan Kirk I want to take time and remind people of something. The creation of just about anything can be for a harmless reason, yet the end result can be blown beyond proportion, see Project M. Do I HATE the mod itself? No, absolutely not. I despise the people behind it and those that call it the magnum opus of Smash despite it being a mod and not an official game, then calling Sakurai out as a bad programmer and person. Been around too many personally. Will I play it? On occasion. Is it my favorite? No. For those that want to play it, go for it. ANYWAYS, it doesn't matter what was meant in the beginning of Project M. It was turned into a completely different project and now is hailed by Melee Elitists. Again, what it starts as isn't what it will always end as. So some people won't see where the Elitist part is. I urge you to go to the project website and read the character analyses and see for yourself why I have a personal grudge against the people behind it all, not the mod itself. I could say the same about Dr. Mario and Mewtwo with their Smash 4 analyses on the Wiki, but that's another can of worms to open when I feel like talking about why people feel that there are obvious buffs to a character and their "Pro-Melee" behavior twists everything up (yes, I'm referring to Mewtwo's).
@shadowmariogalaxy64
@shadowmariogalaxy64 9 лет назад
Donovan Kirk So it has come to this. It's time for me to cherry pick the points myself. 1. The fact that there is a Wavedash. 2. "Everyone's favorite Kong has never really had an especially impressive showing in a Smash title, but with a Melee-based design and specially made changes to his moveset, he hopes to change that in Project M" 3. "In the transition from Melee to Brawl, the good Captain lost a lot of what made him such a beloved player choice, mostly due to the vastly different environment he was placed in. With the overall feel of Melee brought back for Project M, as well as a few minor tweaks, Falcon is revved up and ready to go with new found energy. This incarnation of Falcon plays very similarly to how he played in Melee" because people forget that Captain Falcon also received plenty of buffs in Brawl like reversable Falcon Punch 4. "In Project M, we have opted to give him speedy physics similar to the other Star Fox characters, but with the ability to move much faster horizontally in midair. This causes Wolf to feel familiar to people who played Fox and Falco in Melee" Yeah, let's just make Wolf MORE like a Melee Clone! 5. I won't even quote anything from Falco. He's back to being a Fox Clone without much difference. Brawl made sure to give them more differences. 6. "Overall, the Project M development team is confident that by using Melee Link as a template and giving him minor speed and power buffs, this incarnation of Link will be the best seen in a Smash game to date." Yep, just Melee Link. Nothing from Brawl Link. 7. "Toon Link entered Brawl as a spiritual successor to Young Link from Melee, but with some small tweaks in his moveset to further differentiate himself from his slower counterpart. Despite those small tweaks, Toon Link in Brawl managed to still feel too similar to his adult self while still losing the unique aspects that Young Link posessed. Project M's Toon Link is a hybrid of not only Brawl's Toon Link and Melee's Young Link, but Link's incarnation in Smash 64 as well! Carefully using ideas from all three characters results in a character that is unique yet will still feel familiar to fans of either character in Melee or Brawl." I said it before and I'll say it again: Toon Link was more different from Link than Young Link ever was and ever will be. 8. "In Brawl, Ganondorf's outing was a mere shadow of his status in Melee. The drastic changes in game mechanics and gravity completely negated what made him so effective in Melee - particularly L-Canceling - and crippled Ganondorf's pressure options." The fact that L-Canceling was even brought up oozes with Elitism. 9. " In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, this is manifested in a mechanic that grants his moves additional damage and knockback as he takes damage and loses stocks. Needless to say, we didn't think that rewarding the player for getting hit was the best possible design choice." Oh no, because keeping the opponent on edge without the need to constantly combo is BAD. Because we can't have anything like Wobbuffet in a fighting game that can dish everything back harder than ever when more damaged. 10. "Naturally, in Project M his Melee self has been accurately restored, from animations to hitboxes to physics with a few buffs here and there to boot." 11. "The most dramatic change is the removal of Brawl's Angel Ring and repurposing of his signature recovery move. When a player uses Pit's Side Special, rather than spinning his bow around and yelping like an undisciplined toddler, Pit will use his wings to launch forward into a command-glide: Wings of Icarus." 12. "In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Ike is an intimidating yet predictable character; but no longer." Isn't every character? 13. "In Project M, Snake has taken a highly tactical route. Many of his attacks have been revamped in a way that focuses Snakes gameplay on utilizing his ordnance and close quarters combat. Additionally, Snake now joins the weight class of his fellow humans. Players will have to be thoughtful about all their decisions and attacks as Snake can no longer brute force his way into a battle." Acting like there was a real problem with how he played in Brawl. "When it barely plays like Melee", right? When everything changes to Melee with minor changes, it still feels like Melee.

Panic double jumps when getting hit off stage: I come from a region that have a lot of low leveled players, and I base a lot of my playstyle on mind games, heavy reading, and habit exploitation and one of the habits I see from a lot of the lower leveled players is them double jumping immediately once they get hit off stage. I've practiced against the AI for a long time (don't recommend doing this) and one of the habits I constantly look for is that panic double jump. Another bad habit that I see is the get up attack. It can be incredibly easy to punish, especially when your opponent always picks that option.

You should do another 5, noobs will gain a lot from these. Some ideas: - On top of always tech in place/roll in, if they are in knockdown always getup attacking - Always ledge getup attacking, or more advanced - ledgehop dair - Always dairing when falling down - Approaching without thinking and spacing - DI'ing in when being comboed - Samus mains especially; always CCing even when it wont work or is being repeated baited - Spamming the attack until it works, most often dsmash which ends up as a dair offstage - Throwing out their strongest move whenever given room to breathe (marth fsmash/peach dsmash) - Having a very basic movement pattern like dash dance once into approach always There are hundreds of character specific things u can talk about too. I think having a notable player like yourself spoonfeed it to them, will make noobs really take this advice on board.

Tips for avoiding the mistakes in the video: 5. Practice fluid movement in training. Standing still at all in smash brothers shows a lack of tact. You want to dominate your space in order to pressure your opponent. 4 and 3. Only roll and double jump when necessary. Every move can be punished. Sometimes a situation where you normally jump is better to attack, and a situation where you normally attack is better to spotdodge. Think outside the box, and use your resources wisely. 2. Learn which techs are best for what scenario. Sometimes rolling away is better to avoid a combo, and sometimes, standing tech is better to attack immediately. Use common sense. 1. In melee, shield can be cancelled with jump and up smash. Practice jumping out of shield, and use dash grab cancels to grab your opponents. Shield grabbing only makes you more vulnerable. Also practice spot dodging out of shield, in case your opponents decide to punish your jumps out of shield.
