@@s1n_eater have you found one? here's the best advice. Go to a store. You will only like what feels good in your hands. Get the cheapest version of that one. Learn. Get a better one.
an electronic guitar is something that i’ve wanted to learn playing since i was 14 and now i’m 21. 😳 thanks to quarantine and this video, i can finally get started instead of wasting more time welp.
@Pance Gaming not sure which is my favorite Big Steve Vai fan but also a Big Randy Rhoads fan the crazy train Solo is one on the big reasons I play guitar.
In response to most questions here: I think the type and brand of the guitar is not that important the first year. You first need to play. A playable guitar is then paramount, that means set up, which a shop can do for you. Buying online makes that more uncertain. Then you need an amp that gives you the sound you like, clean or dirty. So there is some preference (country, blues, metal etc) that determines your guitar, but you'll have to learn to play and your type or brand will not destroy your first year, it's playability that matters (and of course determination and discipline). Yamaha Pacifica, for example, is a good starter guitar, be it not iconic. After a year you better know what you want and what you need, and you will want to change anyway. So don't be paralized by this choice.
I wonder how this will turn out for me in that regard - I was pretty picky and spent quite a lot of time searching for what I wanted (as much as somebody who never played guitar could know, based on gathered info). So ended up choosing a HSH (but would be equally OK with HH) with a thin, flat (17'') neck (Ibanez RG). Not sure if this already screams metalhead? 🤣 ATM just 4 months in, so it remains to be seen how much my preferences change along the way. I'm actually really curious about that. And I do agree with well set up guitar. Haven't had much luck in that department so far, though. 🤣 Ended up buying online because I'm a lefty and disliked the only easily available lefty guitar (local shop). I was supposed to get a professionally set up guitar, only to find out later it wasn't. High action, twisted neck, bridge angle wrong (a floating bridge) and unevenly set from behind. Paid for another setup (different guitar tech). Another failure. Neck MIGHT be straight this time but the action was set so low it buzzes all over the neck like an angry hive. The bridge is now even from behind but the angle is still wrong (in a similar way as the first setup, only slightly better - but slightly better doesn't really work in this case...). So, now it's gonna be my turn to try to set it up. Never done that before, obviously. But honestly, not sure if it's possible to get a worse result that the two above. 🤣 I do know what's the correct angle for the trem, at least... (Let's say I know how to search for information.) 😑 (But yes, a local luthier will check what I've done to it, in January. Finally found a true professional. 😊) I feel like if I happened to buy a guitar with a fixed bridge from either of these supposed professionals (both sell set up guitars, legit businesses) and it happened to be set up as mine was/is - how long it'd have taken me to realize there was something wrong? I found out very easily because of the trem not working as it's supposed to. So, in the end I'm actually glad I went "crazy" and bought a guitar with the label "not suited for beginners"... 😂 because learning on a badly set up guitar (let's say the neck and action issues mentioned above) is not much fun, at least that's what my experience is. EDIT: I should add that I understand that experiencing all the above would be very discouraging for many beginners and I wouldn't go and recommend any beginner a guitar with a Floyd Rose. However, I'm not affected by all what happened in such way. The only thing that truly bothers me is the low skill level of the guitar techs I've encountered and it came as a big surprise to me.
As a birthday gift for my brother I picked up a used 2006 Epiphone SG G-400 in great condition with hard shell case for $225.00. He's a beginner and this guitar is awesome. Light and slim with awesome sounds. Highly recommended. BTW, for my niece's 16th birthday I bought her a 16 year old Fender Stratocaster made in Mexico in great condition for $300.00.
Recently i've been obsessed with Rock n' Roll and the guitars always give me such eurphoria, and i plan on learning them.. This video is incredibly useful. Thank you!!
I bought one of those Ibanez GRX70QATEB guitars several years ago back when I wanted to get a guitar with a tremelo. I had a decent Epiphone Les Paul already. I usually stay within $500 to $600 on a guitar, so the Ibanez was a great deal for $199! I've always wanted a nice Gibson, but I'll be 100% honest, my wife would not be very pleased with me if I dropped a few thousand on a guitar. Anyway That Ibanez is really a very nice guitar if you are just starting out. I would definitely agree its a good guitar. They have several great colors as well. The quilted green one is absolutely beautiful. I like green a lot, so I really appreciate the way it looks!
I had no idea that a strat dounded like that! I wanted a heavier sound and almost bought a strat with three single pickups! Thanks for showing me that beautiful Ibanez
If you don't want to spend much, you can change the bridge and/or neck pickup with a good humbucker. They are very versatile guitars. I've seen people cover heavy music with strats.
I am 13 years old and want to start playing. I know a couple of chords but have only been using a 3/4 length acoustic. I have heard electric is easier, and I like the sound better. Which one do you guys recommend?
Eric Dooley I would highly recommend the squire affinity strat. I’ve been playing for about 10 months and it’s unreal. It’s not as cheap sounding as the bullet, it’s a bit more pricey but spending that extra bit to get a nicer tone is huge.
Been playing for 30+ years, if you're really interested in playing, don't be scared, go to a music store and ask for a strap, don't get rushed, find guitars in your price range (or parents) and spend some time handling them and see what feels right, if you can't play yet, have someone play the ones you like so you can hear how they sound. Let the guitar kind of pick you, if that makes sense.
I have at least one of just about every "cheap" guitar ever shipped out of a variety of Asian factories. I like EVERYone of them! Also, I only buy used which makes them cheaper still. I seriously think that the Asian factories simply build one strat style, one tele, etc. etc. Along comes Squier, Aria, Ibanez, Yamaha, bla, bla and they order 5 thousand of the appropriate body style which lies in the Asian factory warehouse. The factory installs writing on the headstock as dictated by the buyer, into the belly of a big boat they go. These instruments are distributed among our outlets where we consume them. We are somehow convinced that these cloned guitars are widely different from each other and that this headstock logo is so much better sounding than that one. DUH! You only have to compare the various logos to each other on RU-vid to realize that they all sound identical because they are made of identical components. I admit that I may unfairly generalizing here but the bottom line is - it is so simple to make the required adjustments to any cheap guitar that will make it as playable, as enjoyable as any expensive guitar! Unfortunately the vendors of the cheap will seldom make any effort to adjust the action/intonation to make your new purchase a rewarding experience. Ergo aspiring guitarists are dumping their guitars with high action and bloodied fret ends on the online 2nd hand sites. And finally, the biggest difference between a properly setup cheapo and a beauty expensive guitar is the amplifier. Side by side the 2 categories will sound different from each other but they are both wires wrapped around magnets. Price tags and logos influence wallets not ears.
After watching this video I really like the Ibanez GRX70QA as my official first guitar. I ordered one online love the blue guitar its my favorite color. I got it due to covid 19 being stuck at home needed to distract myself during the night. And had downloaded rocksmith on the ps4 for $5 on sale. It has been a great distraction!
I’ve seen a lot of videos that say to avoid those packs. The guitars and amps never sound good and it discourages people from continuing with their playing. Take time to save more to get better gear. If a squier is what you can get, cool. Otherwise, save for a fender. I bought an Epiphone Les Paul Standard Pro as my first guitar and I’ve found it’s not as comfortable as I’d like so I’m looking around for new ideas. Unfortunately we are all in quarantine and guitar centers are closed. Boo!
Curious to what guitar amp you were using with all the guitars? Im familiar with guitar, mostly acoustic BUT I do know the amplifier has a big impact on sound, not just the guitar but... It can go both ways. Nice video!
I used to be just like you when i first started my dude. Love Kurt Cobain, You probably want to buy a Fender Jaguar/Mustank because that's what he played, or get something that has atleast one Humbucker pickup on it.
Hey, I’m looking for a beginning guitar, I really want to play 90’s rock, like early Weezer and such and a quite a bit of grunge. So What would you recommend?
If you want to play 90's rock and grunge i suggest you buy a Squire. Probably a stratocaster, but don't buy the SSS configuration version (Single-single-single) pickups. (The 3 lines in the middle of your guitar body) buy the HSS (Humbucker-single-single) or the HH (Humbucker-humbucker) configs. Its better for grunge and rock, and also don't buy the Bullet series if you are planning to play that one guitar for quite a long time, instead buy the Affinity series. (Sorry if i confuse you.its kinda complicated) so in conclusion buy the HSS/HH squire Affinity, btw humbuckers are square shaped singles are lines shaped.
Ive been watching these videos for days and still have no clue about what i want to get. i’ve always wanted to play the electric after listening to pearl jam, nirvana, foo fighters, r.e.m, red hot chili peppers, etc. Any recommendations for these types of songs??🥺🥺
Anything with dual humbuckers and a nice-ish amplifier (maybe a katana). For a guitar get whatever inspires you to play more. Cobain liked the mustang I think
You can get anything you want, as long as it feels good to play and not murdering your wallet, but don't go cheap if you want to actually play for a long time. Just find a sweet spot on your budget. Not cheap and not very expensive and just feel the guitar's neck and give it a strum, if it's comfortable to play then get it.
@@cialos848 for entry level guitarist around $300-$700 you'll find some quality stuff that will last you for ages on that price range on my opinion. Sorry for the very very late response! What you want to focus on is good playability, tone is all on your fingers. (And amplifier probably.)
I did a random search on Google and that 1st Squire you showed was the first thing that came up with the pack. I tried learning to play acoustic when I was a freshman in HS and got lessons in my local music store. A combination of things led me to quitting, I think I just got bored with an acoustic and having to go out of my way for the lessons. If I can get into electric now and use the internet to learn, maybe I'll be able to commit more.
Some good RU-vid channels to check out would be Marty Music, Justin Guitar, and Andy Guitar. Fender also has an app that you can learn on, and if you wanted some personalized online lessons Alamo Music has tutors who teach online!
@@AlamoMusic Thanks for the info! I'll look around at all those options and consider purchasing through Alamo Music Center as you seem to have a great selection.
hi! i’ve really wanted to play electric guitar for years now and i’m finally giving in! I’m planning on playing a lot of Indie/Alternative/Classic Rock, but i’m not sure which guitar to get 🤔 my price range is anything under around 200$, if you have any ideas i’d love to hear them!! thank you 😊😊
Hmm some great guitars for those styles are Fender Strats, and Gibsons, but in your price range an Ibanez could also do really well. Well I've always wanted to play a guitar however I don't really know how and don't I have no confidence and a lot of sibling which can be bad because they can easily get annoyed I actually have an acoustic but it's broken. After watching k-on I really wanna be in a band that sounds pretty childish considering k-on is a child's show, but its whateva
Honestly same Nana, K-On, and Given really made my feelings of wanting to learn and play guitar much more known. I took guitar my freshman year of hs but I don’t remember that much other than like one chord lol. But believe me it’s not childish to feel that connection to something even if it’s an anime that influences you!!
I wish I had any of these guitars when I started playing 10 years ago. Instead I had a local brand strat with some 0.11 Ghs strings set up way high that would slice my finger tips in half. Band practice was also terrible with those Line6Spider amps that sounded like a beehive next to a mic. That if you was able to be heard at all near the drummer. So now you have way better options. I am using an Ibanez RG, an interface and a laptop with VSTs as effects. I can get whatever sound I can imagine, even shimmer or squeelies.
That's a tough one! I personally like Ibanez more for heavy music and shredding. If I want to play more "chordy" stuff or alternative I'll go for the Strat. (:
Hello! I have been playing the acoustic guitar for a year and now I want to start learning to play the electric guitar. My favorite guitarist is Slash. I'd like a Gibson Les Paul, but I can't afford it. I looked at countless reviews and asked a lot of people about: Fender player stratocaster vs Ibanez JemJR. From your video, that Jackson winked at me, but I don't know if it's the right choice. My budget is up to $ 600-700, leaving aside the combo. Thanks and I hope to receive an answer. P.S. : I love the songs "Altitudes" by Jason Backer and "For the love of God" by Steve Vai. P.P.S. : I don't want a guitar from a company that copies the original models. Thanks for understanding. P.P.P.S. : I can't try them, because there is no music store in my city. I can only pray to buy something that I like and is considered good by many people.
Sorry we just saw this now! We can totally help you find a guitar like that! Her is the number for our store (844)251-1922! If you call this number and ask for AJ he can help you find some great ones!
I have a Gio my local shop sold me in a kit w/ everything; amp, guitar, pics, etc. Couldn’t be tuned. Couldn’t hold a tune if you got it tuned. Fret ends would slice you up and down. Is Ibanez actually good now? Thank you.
Great job, it'll be great when I can play at your level, having fun in the meantime. You've almost got me wanting the Epiphone SG and the Tele. Love my Affinity HSS Strat, have you reviewed that? Thanks
@@AlamoMusic thanks, I went by Guitar Center today in part from your review, they had those two in my price range and I'd buy them before I'd buy an expensive amp. Thanks for letting Chris know,I look forward to his input
Not sure why this popped up in my feed when it's an older video, but here's my two cents... I bought a MiM Telecaster a while ago - as much because I loved the looks as anything. I found it quite hard to play. I bought a Squier Mustang, that was much easier to get to grips with. I've since improved (not much!) to the point where I prefer the Tele (it's got such a great tone), but I'd strongly recommend the Mustang for absolute beginners
If you were a beginner, or about to begin, would you really be looking at a Classic Vibe Tele when there are good Squier options for about half the price? Or at an Epiphone G-400 Pro, when there's the bolt-on neck G-310 for quite a bit less? While the idea for this video is good, some of these guitars seem to be on the pricier end of what a newbie (or a parent) would be thinking of spending.
I think he was just showing several options so everyone may find what is best for them. I think it would be good for a beginner to get something that's decent quality so you can keep it when/if you get to an advanced level.
It's a great point Amir but that's why I started with the least expensive Squier. These options in the video are ranging from just over $100 to $200, $250, and so on. I also stated that I wanted to illustrate the value in these ranges so people could get a sense of what's available depending on budget. And let's not forget used options. A classic vibe tele is a great guitar. Finding a quality used one at a great price could be a killer deal! - Chris McKee
Yes but as you get better your going to upgrade anyways. The difference between a CV and a bullet is worth the extra few dollars and you wouldn't necessarily have to upgrade. A Bullet also has no resell value and can be found in pawn shops for 50- 80 bucks. Throwaway guitars!!
@@kirkscobey3031 This video is specifically about first guitars. A Classic Vibe is three times the price of a Bullet in my country, and that's not "a few dollars". Even a cheap guitar like the Bullet can play well if you invest in a good setup and a decent amp, and it can always be upgraded as you improve. It will be many years, if ever, before you need to throw it away. Only an idiot throws away a perfectly good instrument just because it lacks resale value.
I was sort of waffling between a Squier CV and a Fender Player recently (new Fenders are now expensive enough that they're not REALLY a viable beginner's option). I ended up on the Player but it was closer than I want to say and mostly came down to the fact that the Squier CV's gloss neck feels like flypaper on my hands when I'm playing. I really wish Fender would offer a Classic Vibe instrument with a satin-finished neck...
Hmmmm... Do you want to play Electric guitar or acoustic? You can't really shred the same way on an acoustic. And there are acoustic styles you cannot play on an electric. If you let us know that we can find you one! (:
Alamo Music Center I think I am focusing on Electric guitar music like Alternative, Classic Rock, High gain rock too. So anything from the lightest clean tones to nice high gain rock
@@andreis5975 fender squier hss Stratocaster or Yamaha Pacifica paco12 is good and very versatile....but I prefer Yamaha Pacifica paco12...good luck✌️✌️
Gibson SG's have a lot of versatility! Also Fender lead II's are great! Also another big part of tone is the amplifier you get so I would recommend finding an amplifier with a lot of range to! www.alamomusic.com/gibson-sg-standard-heritage-cherry/ www.alamomusic.com/fender-player-lead-ii-crimson-red-transparent-pau-ferro-fingerboard/
I think the best way would be to play with a friend and try theirs out if you know anybody with a guitar. If not, you can get really good deals on used guitars and go from there. Good luck!
If you don't know what type of style to play then I suggest just going to a guitar shop and try it out. If a guitar appeals to you then you would have a better vision of what you like to play.
@@natlis00 Thanks for the great advice! I did just that last week, and fell in love with a Squire CV Telecaster which I didn't even know I wanted until it was in my arms!
Don't be influenced by Motley Crue. You will suck if you do that. Listen to some Partridge Family albums to get started. After that , maybe listen to some albums done by The Archies. Just make sure to stay away from The Crue. You would learn better tone by listening to your cat defecating .
Hello - Thank you for all the informational videos on guitar selection - they are very helpful - Could you also post a video on "What is the best guitar for Percussive playing?"
Hey I want to play kinda heavier rock so do you think the Ibanez would be the best guitar for that if my budget is ~400? I like bands such as Nirvana, MCR, Muse, Motley Crue, and the Artic Monkeys, thank you :))
Ibanez has great guitars you would probably be satisfied with one of those! However an Epiphone SG has a great tone and I think it would fit your style pretty well! It's also around your price range ($450) Let us know what guitar you end up deciding on! P.S. The second link is a bit cheaper (: www.alamomusic.com/epiphone-sg-standard-electric-guitar-heritage-cherry/ www.alamomusic.com/epiphone-sg-muse-electric-guitar-pearl-white-metallic/
Hey, since that particular Ibanez is like 4 years old now, are there any better ones at the same price point from Ibanez? Cause their site has all of them and they all have around the same price
Generally, guitars will receive small improvements (like new features, tuners, etc) with newer models, but this does not necessarily mean the guitar itself will be better. If I were you I would visit a music store near me and play some of the newer ones and compare the sounds. Wish we could give you a straight answer, but so much of this is taste so your best bet is to play them yourself.
@@AlamoMusic Thanks man! I actually did go to a store today lol, but they didn't have any Ibanez's in store. Just tried out some Fenders but didn't like em as much, ill be on the lookout for others

@@AlamoMusic metal , blues ,clean sounds... By the way thankyou for replying sir.....which one now ?......can I play cleans on the Ibanez ? or can I play metal on the squire bullet ?
You can play clean or distortion on both. A big part of electric is the amplification. If you have a decent amp you can play most styles. I would go with the Ibanez.
My son is in college and decided to learn guitar. Money's tight but he's willing to spend around $200. This video was really helpful. I think he's looking at the first guitar in this video. Is it still available at that price with everything that went with it in this video? Thanks.
Alamo Music Center hi, what if u r an absolute beginner learning chords and dunno what music genre u r into.. Will u recommend bullet Strat or Ibanez GRX70QA? Thanks
I’m still having trouble trying to figure out what kind of guitar I want. I’ve watched like 10 vids but everyone says something different and it’s hard to know if people are truly being honest or just paid off.
I've been playing for 7 years and the best piece of advice I can give is to simply try them yourself. Go to your local guitar store, and pick up a guitar. You don't have to play it then and there, because believe me, it is super embarrassing and scary, but just hold it. If it feels right, then you know it's the right one. Don't worry about tone, or warmth or any of that. Your ears aren't trained to hear the subtle differences yet. Simply find a guitar you like, a guitar that is going to inspire you to pick up and play daily, and one that feels right in your hands. One that completes you. I know it might sound vague, but trust me, you will know the feeling when you finally sit down with the right guitar in your lap. You'll feel a connection and you'll know you made the right choice.
@@gamer263 I liked your whole comment and you're definitely right, but in my case my "local" guitar shop is around 50 kilometers away and I only visit that city every 2 months or so, most time going to a music store wouldn't even be a thing that I could do 😅
@@adlerdefender8067 can you give me some options and advice? im find it extremely uncomfortable when i go to a guitar store, cuz i dont know how to play yet but really want to try out. @@shadesofblue6982 you may want to check Harley Benton guitars, the one I got my attention is the CTS-24 Blk it's only 175 plus 30 for shipping because the store is in Germany but overall the specs of the guitar are outstanding for the price point...
I’m going with 50’s Classic vibe telecaster but ı am not sure ı’ve never touch guitar Before is it good for very beginner or do you have any other suggestions thanks:)
i’m 15 and i’ve been playing acoustic for about 3 years now and am looking to learn electric! i’m not into super loud rock, just looking to put a sort of “twist” on some indie songs id regularly play on acoustic. my range is about $100-200 ideally but $300 is okay if the quality is really good, any suggestions? (ps: i’ve played 3/4 and full size acoustic but i’m more accustomed to 3/4)
Acoustics are bigger, so unless you're really tiny, you can go with full size electric. I'm 5'2/157 cm female with average size fingers (for a female) and have full size 25.5' scale electric (but I would buy 3/4 acoustic (if I ever want to have one)). If you can, go to your local guitar shop and try to play different ones, so you can find how well you can reach and how the neck feels in your hands. Buy the best you can afford, goes both for the amp and the guitar. Can't advise you on specific guitar since I don't listen to indie songs (sorry, I'm a metalhead) and have no idea what guitar suits that best. HSS type pickups are the most versatile - can play almost any style on that. Watch videos of people playing that style, what guitar they use? Do they have HSS or SSS? Humbuckers typically look like two single coils together.
Thx very helpful video been wanting to play for years always been my fav instrument though I don’t have experience with instruments so choosing a beginner guitar is really hard! 😅
Hey so I’m just wanting to get into guitar and I want to learn to play like a lot of like classic rock and kind of like country blues type of music. What do you all recommend I have an okay budget like up to $700?
With that budget you could get a Squier strat or Epiphone Les Paul. The standard models that are around $200 and more are fine and you can't really go wrong with them. For an amp I would go for a combo amp (built in effects) and leave effect pedals out of the picture as those get expensive pretty fast. Any digital combo amp that fits your budget will work. Just have a listen to some of them and pick whichever one you like.
Hi guys, I’m looking to get my first electric (have been playing on an acoustic for about just over a year now) and I really like the sound of the Epiphone. This video has been super useful but I was more leaning towards the les Paul shape of the Epiphone. Would you say that it’s a worthy investment for my first electric guitar?
Not sure if you guys plan on making an updated video, because this was really great. Im as beginner as it gets, and love the look of that classic vibe telecaster. Would you recommend it for someone who will like to learn music by the Strokes, Growlers, The Voidz, or just alternative and indie in general. My current budget is right around 400$ and other recommendations like it, would greatly be appreciated. I just love the classic looking stuff. Thank You!!
I would reccomend this Squier Paranormal series below! It should give you just the sound you're looking for! It comes in a few different color to btw! Also a big part of electric is the amp so make sure to listen to demos of those before you get one. Let us know what you decide on (: www.alamomusic.com/squier-paranormal-offset-telecaster-natural/
I have an Ibanez gio and it always had been a good guitar. But now if you hit the switch it'll the sound will cut in and out on it, same thing with the pickups. I haven't played In quite awhile and never had a lesson. And in looking for something to play 50s music with. I'd love gretsch but they're a little more on the expensive side. Being left handed doesn't help me out a whole lot either.
Ok, I'm a very basic guitar player who hasn't played in a long time. I went into a guitar store last week, thinking I would walk out with a Squire strat, or an Epi G400. I ended up walking out with an Epiphone LP Custom Pro. It was slightly used (less than a month), so it had a discount. I bought it mostly because it had very nice action, and it has a lot of tone flexibility. Who am I kidding, I got seduced because it looked amazing.
