Back when Petsmart first started selling reptiles they had a blue tongue skink at the store I worked in. I was mildly afraid of reptiles but this guy was so calm and sweet unless he was in his cage. In the cage he was always pacing the walls, looking frustrated, wanting to get out. We would take him out and he would just happily sit on your shoulder while helping customers, counting crickets, cleaning fish tanks or whatever. Loved that little guy, another associate ended up buying him.

The pet store I worked at when I was in high school had a bearded dragon that was like that we all loved it and a lot of the time customers thought it was part of our uniform because we had it on our shoulders so much 😆😆😆 it freaked one customer out when it moved to look towards a coworker that walked by me I used to get in trouble for wearing the sand boa like julery before we sold it too 😆😆😆 I also fell even more in love with reptiles than I already was and the "creepy" tarantula more than i already was because none of them bit me like the mice, hamsters, rabbits, or birds did quite frequently 😆😆 heck even the fish would nip when cleaning the tanks because we hand fed them but the way I look at it is you don't get mad at your cat or dog for the occasional playful nip why would you with other pets it's a concept people who don't like reptiles don't understand haha I had a lady give me the most horrified look when I told her I used to feed my leopard gecko by hand my leopard gecko she was so gentle when she fed I basically just place the meal on her teeth for her and she's never once bitten me she also used to walk along the glass or prop herself up on it when she was really hungry or just wanted to be picked up I saw her as my little furless cat I miss her she passed away last summer hope all you wonderful people reading this have a great day 😁😁

it will always be wierd to me that its perfectly normal for us as humans to buy and sell animals - other living beings. Implying their lives are worth a certain amount of money or profit. Wven wierder is the phrase “owner” when people talk about their “pets”. Certainly interesting how we’ve all become so desensitized to these terms.

A friend of mine met a beardie at an expo who was steeply discounted because he was grown and "not friendly at all". Said beardie crawled right up her arm and fell asleep on her in two minutes. She took him home, of course. He was in fact perfectly friendly, he just needed some one on one time with an owner who would sit quietly with him! My leopard gecko is flighty and would rather climb the couch than hang out with anyone when she's taken out, but she has NEVER tried to bite me. Even when I'm making her mad by getting stuck shed off her feet. Hubby once did something VERY foolish when she was clearly tail-wagging at him- he went in to boop her nose with HIS nose- and he *still* got away unscathed.

I can vouch for blue tongue skinks being “Easy to Handle”. I got nibs as a new born and he’s never tried to bite me. He is very huffy though and doesn’t like being touched. @cwgrlrish
@cwgrlrish 2 года назад
@@amandastakeonit7402 Unfortunately, there are many terrible pet owners in this world. I would never consider a beardie or many other animals appropriate pets for most people. I was astonished at how much it costs and how much work it is to keep such a small animal-and if you do it right, you will be taking care of it for >10 years 😳. I also can’t believe it often gets mislabeled as a “beginner” reptile. I like your idea for a video and think a breakdown of the average cost and time consumption for the first year of care (housing, lights, food, trips to store) for the top re-homed/neglected reptiles would also make for an informative video.

Can definitely agree with Blue Tongue Skinks. My adorable CoaCoa use to be scared by me and my girlfriend, but after some months of taming her down, she no longer bites (unless she mistakens my fingers for worms then she'll do a little nibble), she no longer runs and hides, she enjoys chin and head rubs, she responds to her name, she's very social with us, and she's not even an adult yet 🦎

Jasper, my little grump of a leopard gecko, was the runner/screamer of the Petsmart clutch. I hadn't really gone to the store with the intent of buying a reptile, but after seeing the sale they were having and seeing her cute little face, I really couldn't resist. I knew what I was getting into with her. Hell, I even went into the purchase saying "gimme the one with the attitude" bc I wanted the one with a "big personality"...to the silent concern of my best friend and the lady who had to catch her. I don't regret that choice necessarily, as she is super fun and has mellowed out a lot in the year I've had her, but I do regret getting a leopard gecko from Petsmart of all places. Overall, their geckos don't get held or interacted with unless absolutely necessary for medical reasons, and commonly, their providers are either really scummy or really lazy in socializing the animal, so she was...quite angy as a baby. Later in the year, my friends ended up pooling their money and buying me that really cute ball python I would always interact with at the local grange co-op, and he is a GEM. Fully socialized, never opposed to being held, always curious and exploring...and Jasper at nearly 16 months old now is still pretty flighty and "don't touch me"...which is just sad to me. TLDR; I wish I'd been less worried about overly stressing her when I first got her bc maybe if I'd held her more in those first few months, maybe she'd be less flighty now.

Agh, my heart seriously can’t cope with how cute leopard geckos are!! With their perpetually happy little faces and their chonky wiggle-butt tails! I can’t.😂❤ Thanks for taking a risk on the one with the “saucy” attitude, otherwise she probably would’ve had a pretty sad fate. I definitely feel your pain about buying from petsmart/petco/basically any type of box chain pet store… They’re irresponsible pet stewards, so I always want to save *ALL THE THINGS* from their stores-but sadly, I can’t. Because I know that would just encourage them to double down on restocking even more of the animals I “saved”…😢 (Well, plus I don’t have the kind of “kiss my ass” money necessary for buying and comfortably housing/caring for every animal in a store lol). Le sigh. 💔

I have two rescue ball pythons that came from a neglect case. They were kept in 40 gal with 3+ other adult pythons. They were never handled, and the owner ended up selling all eight of them together in a bag for a hundred bucks. I took two of them from the lady that initially bought them and was going around trying to find them a good home. I have had them for close to a year and was only ever tagged once in the first two weeks. Now even though they were treated terribly and never socialized their baby and juvenile years, they are the sweetest snakes i've ever owned. They love to snuggle up and watch tv with me, and have huge personalities. I 100% agree with this list, if you want a sweet and gentle snake a ball python is a perfect fit for beginners and long time reptile owners.

In my experience with Geckos, especially Leopard Geckos, if they aren't unburdened of their fear response early they are more likely to always be leery of humans and sometimes revert after a seemingly successful pacification. Rescues have a rough go of it: Just lots of work slow, tender work. Bearded Dragons, I love them. When you have an animal so indifferent and tolerant of us humans it's only easy to go up from there. Pleased to see blue tongues make the list. I got my Eastern at 2 1/2 months old & he's now almost 13 months, & he's about as tolerant as a reptile could be. I'm convinced he would never bite anyone, unless it was food confusion. Despite being very young when we got him & having been handled by young kids he's never even gotten defensive enough to do the tongue display that wild blue tongues are famous for. He is more work to handle than a bearded dragon would be as he doesn't stay still for very long when in the open, & he'd quickly find a nook or crannie to disappear into if not closely supervised. He does like to sit on my shoulder though, & I love the way he'll snuggle into my neck when he wants to warm up.

Good content again. Dione rat snakes (Elaphe dione) are insanely friendly too. Can be bought in many local forms/colour forms (bred/established by the Exotarium Tula, some very aesthetic animals are Wladiwostok/Nigrita/Vipera/Beijing forms). Even has a very short incubation time of only two weeks in some cases (incubation is easy too). They are the best starter snake according to many in Europe, totally underrated in America/Canada. The same as the Siberian Amur snakes (the Korean one isn't).

FYI, Siberian Amur snake is most likely Elaphe scherenckii other than feeding response they are very placid snakes, the Korean species or subspecies on the other hand are "hell on wheels". They are known in the US as "Russian rat snakes" most likely because the first ones in the US came to the Brookville Zoo(AKA Chicago Zoological Park) as a trade with the Moscow Zoo back in the 1960's. They even bred in Ray Pawley's constant 90 degree reptile house the first babies were even available as surplus for$75 USD well out of my budget as a student. Nice to know about Dione rat snakes, having purchased a ladder snake as a baby that makes local wild coachwhips and racers look placid made me sort of not want to try any other Eurasian rat snakes.

My daughter talked me into letting her get a leopard gecko. He's pretty chill, chill enough that my 3 year old can even hold him (under close supervision). He's so low maintenance, the main thing for us is making sure to keep a close eye on the temperatures in his tank. We have some brutal winters up here and live in an old house with so so insulation

He put his belly on my forearm, hung his legs and tail over the sides, and went to sleep pretty quick. Once he warmed up I almost forgot he was there. Crested geckos, garter snakes and hognose could definitely be on the list. Some crested geckos like to bite but I think it's rare. Even wild garters rarely bite. Hognose only bluff strike and usually only bite as a feeding response.
@amandastakeonit7402
@amandastakeonit7402 2 года назад
I think crested gecko babies are like all baby reptiles, scared...so they are more likely to bite, even then of the five we have had only two bit as babies and it was a total of three times between them. As for sub adults or adults biting, I agree, it would be rare or definitely the blame of the person handling them and how they are doing it.

Just turned the vlog on so not sure if Leopard Geckos make this one but I just want to share, my Leopard Gecko begs to be held. She will stand up tall and pace and stare at me and when I offer my hand she climbs up and then will go to sleep on my chest for about 20 minutes. If I take her out and set her right back in, thinking she has one brain cell so she should be good and think I held her, nopeity no way jose, she begs out again. But after a 20 min snoogle fest she will go do her lizard things when I put her back. I love her so so much. 🥰😊

I would've expected tortoises to make their list. From my experience, they're definitely one of the friendlier reptiles! And personally I don't think leopard geckos would fit this list. Personally, I find them a little too fragile, and from my experience leopard geckos always try to run away while being handled. Nice video overall though!

I dog that i had since she was 8wks old passed away this year. I live with my daughter and son in law now who are animal lovers. So we have 5 dogs, 3 rats, and 3 snakes. However for the first time in my life im alone in my room. So i thought about getting a new pet. I feel in love with a male sand boa. Hes lovely. Very gentle and easy going. Hes truly my buddy now. He very easy to hold and talk to, he pays attention 😊. Im very comfortable handling him. Maybe because im old and move slow hes very easy going. His name is Suibian. Which means whatever, thats how we leave, whatever happens we can get through it together. Love your show. Stay healthy, happy and safe always.

Couldn't agree more with number 1. Nothing but the most laid back critter that you could own. A little bit on the pricey side, bit worth it. Also, definitely agree with getting critters as babies. A bite will usually mean nothing and they are much easier to tame. And mistakes are much more forgivable.

Do you think that being captive bred bred for generations plays a huge role in the most friendly reptiles? Like bearded dragons, northern blue tongues, and ball pythons have all been bred in captivity for so many years now that they are almost being domesticated in a sense.
@masterd1mwitt830
@masterd1mwitt830 2 года назад
I've thought about this as well. You would think it'd make sense, as they would become more accustomed to habitation with humans with successive breeding. I'm more of a rodent guy and the only comparison I can make is that mice have been domesticated for thousands of years and I can stick my hand in their cage and have them run right up my arm, even with nervous individuals I've never been bitten they just freeze or flee, whereas hamsters have been in the pet trade for less than a hundred years and require a lot more work to tame down. Even when I do have my hamsters at a "tame" point I still have to test their temperament that day before grabbing them as they are still pretty nippy lol

No I used to mod the largest FB for skinks and northerns are feisty. I frequently had to help people with this all the time, they're told skinks are placid and once warmed up they don't know how to deal with gaping/biting/false bites and shielding. They're known in Aus for readily biting , they're not like their Eastern cousins.

@@MohamedIbrahimFerozKhan I read your initial comment and I thought, what in the world do kids and parents object to about rodents. This one clarifies it at the very last words! So I see, you being the kid and living with parents and they don't want the rodents in their freezer space. Depending on how many you get at a time, you could disguise them in containers and lebel it with your name, if they look, it's on them now ;) **Strider, I would hope you are not feeding dogs pork, it's on the DO NOT feed list**

Doesn't matter how often I let him out or how familiar the surroundings are, he loves to move around and explore. He was the most active, friendly, and healthy of all the beardies when I went to get one.
