very happy to see Maslow’s hierarchy of needs addressed here
@AdvancedOphthalmologySurgery
As an Ophthalmologist I would say that if you choose any medical specialty because it says something to who you area as a person you will be happy. Of course monetary compensation is an important factor and it seems that Ophthalmology while still very good is perhaps lagging comapred to some other medical-surgical specialties such as ORL.. however the ability to restore vision in impaired patients is truly rewarding. And all specialties shoudl have their unique meaningful moments and these uniqueness is ultimately what you must pursue ;)

I have a question about the Physician Compensation. Is compensation and salary different? I’m guessing that salary is the income that’s earned on paychecks while compensation is income along with other benefits like insurance & 401k???

Volunteer work and shadowing
@alenaatoutlemonde4036
@alenaatoutlemonde4036 Год назад
Are you Canadian or American or from a different country? -If American, volunteer or shadow (not sure how it works as I’m from Canada and shadowing is absent in Canada) or educate yourself on health/medicine related subjects -Canadian: volunteer, educate yourself on health/medicine topics -Different country, should be the same for the above -In any case, it’s your first year, you should be pretty lenient on yourself. enjoy the break unless you do extra studying for fun. Being a premed stresses the important of time management and balance in life. So take it easy in the break, you’ve just about finished your final exams and you should be able to reward yourself with doing what interests you and something that isn’t so taxing. Another idea is to look at anatomy cards

Concentrate on your school for now and get into the habits of college. If you do a lot of time-consuming extra curriculars, your grades may suffer and that will look to medical schools like you do not manage your time well. If by the end of your first semester, you’re knocking it out of the park, get a job with your university’s tutoring program and tutor other kids a couple times a week. I wouldn’t start volunteering and clinical exp until 5th semester. It’s hugely important to pace yourself. Do join your pre med clubs right away, though. Then at some point you may be promoted to leadership within the club.

USMLE? Are you planning on staying in Spain or do you want to go to the US or Canada, because if you stay in Barcelona you don't need to take the USMLE, just the MIR exam. But if you want to go to the Northern countries of North America, I think you are eligible, as long as you have the medical training and a couple of other criteria, though I don't remember which ones.
