Apple should have mentioned #4 but I don’t anticipate it being a big deal. Macbook air has no fans and performs nearly identical to Macbook pro. I am assuming the iMac needs a bit more cooling with the display and other internals but I expect it to be a similar difference in performance. Definitely following tho to see your findings
The performance issue just blew my mind, this really changes everything about this machine. About the screen I don’t really care the 23,5 still fine. I would say that if there wasn’t a small issue here, your imperial system. Panels are made and designed in metric. They are designed at 60cm, the model called 24 inc which is 60,96 cm The panel about 60 cm 23,5 inc is 59,69 cm So let’s do a quick marketing, everyone leaked 24, but the panel really isn’t that much but we need the better sounding name okey, call it 24 list it at the website at 23,5 Why 23,5? Simple 59,69 is smaller then 60 so you can legally list it as 23,5, and sounds better then 23,622. Let’s finish the math here what you really talking about is 0.96 cm 0.377 inch which is 1.5% difference. You really think that’s real? There no panel on the market at the size of 60,96. And at last I would like you too ask to get your heads out of your asses and do the math before sending a video out to millions who will freak out for something that doesn’t exist. Also next time take a break before trying to use a smaller screen the 27inch is enormous both in price and size there really isn’t a point in comparing the two especially if you realize it’s supposed to replace a 21,5 inch screen.
True, 27" is like the bare minimal needed for a high productive workflow. Even 27" seems small these days with 32" monitors becoming more and more popular.
Thats cool mate , however some of us prefer or need bigger monitors due to eye strain or just old eyes , i have a 27 inch monitor , and i`d be very happy to have 32 or even 40 inch job , everyone is different , my little step brother has like 200 tabs open at all times with text and apps so small , i truly dont know how he even operates his machine , but it doesnt faze him . Horses for courses :) .
@@mikldude9376 Elements on screen are exactly the same size for the 21.5", 24" and 27" iMacs. If your eyesight requires elements to be larger, you use the monitor scaling options. Or you sit a little bit closer to that iMac of yours, which also makes it bigger to your eyes. Sure, I understand that a bigger screen has other positive aspects, but the eyesight thing really doesn't matter much with Retina displays. Just use the controls correctly to achieve the result that fits you.
Well, I love most of the videos that you guys put. But as an Audio engineer and music producer, I have to say louder isn’t better, and clearly the Pro version of iMac has a distortion when it comes to their speakers. The new iMac sounds balanced, with exactly how the sounds meant to sound. In reality every song you hear is muffled in a way, because every listening device you use has a signature tuning to it, and most of them always boost the highs and the lows to market their target audience. I found iMac’s speakers are the closest to that particular balanced sound that every audiohead wants!
That's interesting. So theoretically, if you were to mix with nothing but built in speakers in all of the iMacs, the M1 iMac will translate best on other systems? Even bass?
Finally a sensible comment. But the thing is that they stated it was a 21.5" iMac for that previous model that it replaces. For this they said it was a 24" when it is not it is only 23.5" which is what the issue is.
I’m confused. You stated the 21 inch iMac isn’t great for video editing or productivity.... but on the iPad 12.9 m1 iPad review you talk about using it for video editing and productivity...... this is in terms of screen size not about the processors.
@@29kalelYes, the Intel’s. It’s almost 3x as fast as the 13” intel’s. Even the iPad (8th Generation) is faster than the base model 2019 Intel MacBook Air.
@@racineurr.8924 this man correctly predicted the 4.5k res of the imac, the cost, and several other design choices. He is certainly one of the most reliable apple youtube channels, and though this video has some admittedly poor points, his overall channel is fantastic.
@@swiftyedits4067 I'm not denying his technical knowledge but I'm a bit fed up with these guys that are so remote from the needs of the common people and review entry levels stuff (TV, headphones, earphones, phones, etc) and immediately find them inappropriate for their use as if their use was all that was important. As if they cold not imagine in their ivory tower that another man or woman down there will buy the 1299$ iMac and it will be anything he/she will ever need. I say to these reviewers: don't review these entry things, you will obviously find them unfit for use. Again, wait till the 30 inch Pro iMac comes and then you'll be on your turf. Do you really think it's worth saying the entry level device will take 12 seconds more than the midtier to render a 4k video. Who but professional videographers need those 12 seconds? This is the only point, not the professionalism or the knowledge of this reviewer.
Yeah he pretty much clickbaits every single time. He’s complaining about small things because he can easily get any apple product he wants while a lot of people, including me would be really happy with a base model.

I did a LOT of video and photo editing on a 21.5 inch screen and it was fine. I think that this is just a case of the younger gen just getting spoiled by the bigger screens.
These complaints seem to be very nit-picky. Of course a 24” display is smaller than a 27”, duh! How are you shocked by that? Also, there is a reason that the base model is less expensive to purchase. It’s supposed to have less to offer than the upgraded models. The fact that it only has one fan isn’t earth shattering news. Then to talk it up as if Apple was hiding alien technology is laughable.
Fair but personally I bought the base model because I didn't care about the GPU, I don't mind the fans that much since I don't use heavy software but it would've been nice to know beforehand. I can see people having an issue with it if their computers tend to overheat.
@@paultiffet8183 You are responding to this a year later dummy and yes it did prevent me from doing so because I value honesty and Apple is not an honest company.
First problem is absolutely not relatable for me. There are thousands of videos which claim the new MBP as the go to video editing machine at it only has an 13“ display. This however has an even bigger display compared to its predecessor and you are stating this as an issue? Sorry I don‘t get the point, wait for the rumored 32“ iMac instead and don‘t compare apples with bananas.
The issue is advertising the iMac with a 24” screen when it’s half an inch smaller. This might not make a difference to many people. But why didn’t they advertise the old iMac as 22” instead of 21.5”? Since when is rounding up acceptable… ?
@@moogle17 Since the dawn of displays... it's common to round up displays 24" and below. You will find most monitors are advertised as "24"-class monitors" and are actually 23.5". This ranges from Viewsonic to Dell to HP, etc. etc. It has to do with yields of the LCD panels starting with Gen 5 LCD (the one before the introduction of LED-LCD).
You guys are good normally but this one is a dud IMHO. All of these "issues" aren't really issues at all. They are personal preferences. I was expecting a video with real "issues" that you had found with the new M1 iMac. These are all subjective. I love the screen size in my environment, the sharpness and detail of the camera, the speakers, and the blue color is awesome! Who cares about the fans. See you on the next video!
@@spacecadet2172 No it isn't. Screen size is always meaured by the diagonal. Apple chose for the first time to overstate the size of their product as 24" when it is 23.5". Every other product was accurately named they did not round up or put it in the small print for their other products which is misleading and in some countries against the law and false advertising.
@@spacecadet2172 No it hasn't been standard practice Apple Fanboy Cultist. Screen sizes have always been measured by the diagonal and pretty much all manufacturers including Apple have never over stated the size or rounded up until Apple did so with the "24" inch cough iMac which is only 23.5" inches. This is deliberate, misleading, false advertising and dishonesty by Apple.
Yes, it seems an odd complaint about the base model having just a single fan when the AIR has no fan at all and this isn’t seen as any kind. If a hindrance in reviews or real world experiences. Seems to me that a lot of these reviews are looking at this particular iMac as if it’s a professional device and not a home desktop for people who want a little bit of style and prefer Mac over Windows. It’s at the bottom of the eventual pile. True professional models will follow. Don’t you get that?
Eh, you didn't expect the blue iMac to be so… blue? What a weird thing to complain about. And the webcam is upping shadows because your coworkers probably Zoom in the dark a lot and they're trying to make that look better.
I preorder a 24inch as I think staring at 27 inch can make me go blind with such close distance. I also laughed when you said 24 inch is much more smaller than 27inch....er...well isn't it obvious when they already said its a 24 inch?
It's still very weak in the GPU department when compared to the 27 inch that comes with radeon 5500 standard. Also you cannot attach a external gpu enclosure.
Yeah, you should wait for the 27 or 30 model if you are looking at the graphical horse power. I mean 16 to 32 cores means any where from a 5600m or 5500 xt to vega 2 duo!!!
@@vernearase3044 I don't see a problem with people using external gpus. I have one lying around and pair it up with my base spec 27" iMac to game occasionally. It's just another feature that worked perfectly fine on the older iMacs that apple took away. So now you end up paying a premium just for a GPU upgrade. And if you see what apple charges to upgrade a gpu in the macbook pros, you'll understand the concept of absurd pricing.
I came up from the 21.5 inch iMac and I’m very pleased. This one was made for the the 21.5 audience and priced like it. The 27inch and iMac Pro users have theirs coming later this year. But comparing this one to the 27 inch or PRO? Is a little unfair. The sound system “best ever” being the only legitimate gripes
Interesting commentary on the sound volume. I feel the sound volume on my M1 MacBook Pro is also a little on the low side and I’m considering getting an external Bluetooth speaker because of that concern.
Thank you! I’m glad I decided to wait to see the colors in person. Also I am very happy to know about the cooling fan situation before going in to buy one.
I don't see these issues as real problems. Don't expect having everything on the basic version, and just use some good external 2.1 USB speakers Don't let me start about issues with almost every part of my expensive PC...
Coming from an iPad this thing is a monster. I love it, I don't care how it looks I bought it because of its Performance. I wish these reviewers would stop nit picking, looks are Cosmetic.
I usually love the analysis in your videos but this one seemed more like a bunch of (mostly) minor quibbles. I’m coming from a 16 inch MBP, so the size is a major improvement for me. However, since AAPL called the 24 inch iMac’s predecessor 21.5 inches, they should have stuck to that convention. I really have a problem with the quibble about sound, however. Your criticism of the 24 inch in comparison to the 27 inch models is kinda like saying the HomePod mini is a dud because it doesn’t sound as good as the OG HomePod that’s three times its size and three times its cost. For its size, the 24 inch iMac has darn good sound and in most settings is plenty loud. Of course, I haven’t blown my hearing out playing loud music and living in loud urban environments, so that might also be a factor.
I’ve seen the imac at the store today. I dunno why the reviewers are saying the speakers are not good but to me it was fking good. But #4 was a good find, my decision is now clear. after WWDC I will make the final decision after the Macbook Pro is revealed(if it is revealed).
I watch your videos regularly but this video is a reach and I think that's being kind. Shocked by the size difference? I replaced my 2019 27" iMac with a 24 inch and I'm honestly impressed. The 24 inch takes up less desk space yet still provides a decent size screen because of the smaller bezels. Additionally the comments about the camera and other items are opinion based and subjective. Again, I watch your videos regularly, but this appears to be "hey let's find a reason to pump out another video and generate ad revenue". I love my new 24" iMac and adjusted to the screen size difference within minutes. It's extremely fast, snappy, the camera is light years ahead of the 720p camera that was in my 2019 27", and it's just overall very well designed. That's my opinion.
Wow, all the other reviewers didn’t even bother to verify and just went along with the Apple marketing of it having the best webcam and speakers from all Macs.. I love how unbiased you guys are!
Need that base trim comparison video. Spec'd out my base model iMac waiting on delivery but didn't know about that cooling fan issue. At least its taking apple forever to send it to me so that should give you some time.
The issue wasn’t that it’s smaller than 27”. It’s that it feels smaller than expected in actual use, partially because it’s actually 23.5”. Since you’re measuring diagonally on a screen, that .5” def makes a difference in how big the screen actually is
Thanks Vadim for displaying the issues. I know many people in the comments don’t see them as real issues. But to me and many computer nerds it definitely counts. At least if I’m making a purchasing decision I’d rather be well informed and opt for the higher spec for better thermal management, or wait for the bigger iMac if the 23.5” iMac is not big enough. Thanks again for your dedication and great videos!
I love my new 24" iMac, but I have to say, this is one of the more honest critiques I've seen out there. They aren't game breakers, but the speakers & the washed out camera are definitely a tad annoying. Especially given their marketing on those 2 items specifically.
I love the speakers on it. I feel like a lot of people listen to their music WAY too loud and will cause hearing loss, I couldn't imagine trying to turn up the volume when it's already max'd out. I don't even listen to it at 50%. Watching this video I have it only on the 3rd bar of volume lol
I love that this guy doesn't pull any punches. Very refreshing in a world of rabid apple fanatics that let the company get away with misleading/false advertising on a regular basis.
they use credit cards, and as he said near the end of the video, they return a lot of machines after making the video. Sadly, lots of RU-vidrs do that, they buy, film a video review, then return the stuff and get monetized
The cooling differences are interesting. Apple didn’t tell people the 2 port 13” mbp and 4 port had different cooling either. I’m really curious to see thermal throttling tests between the two.
I can't comment on if it's small for editing. But have def seen plenty of people complaining in forums that 24' is too small and how they need 27' at least
How long does it take the iMac to ship? I ordered mine on 17 June 2021 and it still stays processing. I can’t wait for it to get delivered and it says it will be delivered on 26th July. Does it come that late or it comes before?
That’s the reason why Apple does not send Max Tech review units, because of their unbiased reviews. Unlike other RU-vidrs praise Apple. Thank you guys for your honest reviews!
I'll say this: Several brands shave a half inch off their advertised size. Look at most TVs for sale. (32 inch CLASS, 31.5 inch diagonal) Also, the M1 has such a low thermal footprint, I don't see the difference being all that huge. Not to mention these are low-tier iMacs we're talking here. The bigger ones become better.
Good video. Makes me think twice about getting one of these, though it would *still* be a vast upgrade from my 2016 15" Dell laptop :-) Also, had Apple not been keen on a form-factor overhaul, just slapping an M1 system board in the previous iMac design, and giving it a better camera seems like it would have made more sense. Hopefully future updates will address all the issues you found.
This was never supposed to replace the 27”. It was made to replace the BASE MODEL 21”. Bruh. Literally every monitor on earth rounds up. That 22”? It’s actually 21.7. 27”? More like 26.something. To nit-pick something so insignificant was quite unnecessary.
I'm seeing a lot of comments from people misunderstanding about the size. In no way are you "complaining' about the product, just that Apple, Inc. is not clearly disclosing the screen size, which I agree with. I saw one of these in person and they are exactly as you described. Thank you for producing this great content.
The little change in the colors is expected in my opinion because they are using 3D renders probably and there is a high chance that 3D rendered colors are different than normal colors.
The speakers aren’t an issue for me as I have a hifi system for music and streaming. The issue for me is that it’s an all-in-one. My 2013 27” iMac has almost ground to a halt and is not big sur compatible, but the monitor is perfectly adequate for my needs. It’s a QHD non-retina display model, and this it why I’m going for the Mac mini.
@@ianshyu if you're selling good speakers, it needs a balance of quality and volume no? Otherwise but a HiFi system with a Mac mini like Colin mentioned
To be honest, the fact that the 24" iMac is missing the Anti-reflective screen coating that can be found on the 27" is a huge bummer and probably one of the worst issues in my opinion.
@@campelodemagalhaes It is so nice having it on the newer 27" iMacs. I don't get why they decided to skip out on having that feature on the 24" iMacs, but I guess they are saving it for the refresh of the 27" or perhaps pro iMacs.
I agree with you about all these issues, I just received my new iMac 24 inches today and I’m not fully happy about it as first time iMac user. I wish I watch this video before I bought it. Thank you
This is a replacement for the integrated graphics and lowest end dedicated 21" iMac. Why is every reviewing it as if it's a pro machine? It's litterally a MacBook Air strapped to a display.
Four of your issues were important for me but I am a function over form person so #5 means little to nothing to me. Of course I am speaking only for myself as my wife is different.
Hi Greg, love your videos. I have a quick question I purchased the new 24 inch iMac. When I plug in my External HD into the Thunderbolt Port it does not mount but when I plug it into the USB-C port it mounts. I cannot figure out if the problem is my cable or do I need a Thunderbolt External HD? Thank you
I’m guessing when you buy a car you compare it to something most can’t afford or need. Grow up the size is a problem! Really you know it’s smaller that is what you are buying! The base model and a full blown machine or a machine that costs twice as much as the full blown machine is such a fair comparison right? No. Stop it you are comparing its look of the screen in a very bright room with very light colors all over the place, yes your jacket was black but what is the value difference between the two? 8 stops or more! Have you color corrected it? Probably not right. Your observations are for the most part worthless. Apples to watermelon! I bought the computer full blown it should be here in a couple of days I’m sure I’ll be happy with it until I want to change! Life is too short! Look at what you bought and what you spent!
There is a subpixel rendering bug that need to be fixed and it has been in the OS for about 5 years. Thin lines show up in Safari when you zoom in on divs next to each other where the background color is different. Please report this to Apple Support. The more people that call them the higher the chance of getting the problem fixed. It's on iPhones, iPads, MacBooks and regular Macs.
I've got base model, and now I want to return it. Cooling is essential for me. Can you please make a test while people have that return window. Thank you guys, you are the best
The problem is Apple obsession with thinness. No one would ever complain about if this iMac would be twice as thick: - without a chin, or a least a smaller one if they like the panda effect - with way more space to add a proper cooling solution (it could have been even a fanless one using all the back backplate as a heat dissipator) instead of being crammed under the display - more thickness equals more volume to get better amplification for the speakers and get bigger speaker inside Finally, the stand. It is particularly bad for a 1499$ machine. No one asked for a Pro Display Stand by no height adjustment, no vesa mounting (you literally have to buy a different sku and then you have no stand and have less chance to sell it) are unacceptable from Apple.
