Yes! Awesome video! Especially the point of boosting the midrange, in rock and metal the 1K area is crucial to have the bass mashed with the guitars. You don't necessarily need to hear it, but it should serve as a low-end sustain for the guitars: the situation should be like you mute the bass and the mix falls apart

most of my low end issue seemed to be synth bass translating well on headphones, earbuds especially would disappear at times or all together in mix. I find some kind of harmonic saturator or plugin that adds harmonics in some way or another helps tremendously with bass tone and how it translates. pure sin wave bass tends to lack a natural character that we are used to hearing plugin alliance sub bass synth plugin is great for this purpose and helps control the low end

Thanks David for another great video, I really enjoy the last series of 'top mistakes'. You said don`t EQ parallel signal of low end material, but what about EQing it with Linear Phase mode? That will avoid phase problems. Thanks a lot.
@mixbustv
@mixbustv 2 года назад
Yes it would but why would you want to eq a parallel? Eq the source which in turn will eq the parallel, it's so simple.

Warren said fixing the low end was his biggest transition into more pro mixes. I'm not in yinz's realm in terms of gear and production yet too have come to recognize the importance of keeping low end rather clean. I would add keeping the lows dead center and maybe even high passing at a higher frequency on the sides can be helpful. Without a sub (and a well treated room), mixing bass can be extremely difficult. The importance of simply being able to HEAR what you're doing can't be overstated. Incorporating a good pair of headphones may be crucial, especially for home recording setups. I haven't tried the Slate VSX system but that seeks to address the challenge. I get by with Blue Sadie cans at this point. Finally, when it comes to the master bus, even though high passing should occur frequently during tracking and/or mixing, using one (perhaps a linear phase eq) before other processors such as a compressor(s) and final limiter is a good idea. A gentle slope down there below 20, 30, or even 40 hZ can salvage certain mixes.

Hi David I have a question... When you're mixing your bass on analog gear do you use a mono chain (EX: 1 channel EQ with 1 Distressor) or do you mix it in stereo (EX: stereo EQ with 2 distressors)? Thanks for any input!!
@mixbustv
@mixbustv 2 года назад
Mono if it's mono (usually rock, metal, trap, some pop), stereo if it's stereo (edm, industrial, others). Although mono bass can end up having stereo efx on, the core sound gets worked on in its prime form

Great tips, I always learn a lot. How do you approach a situation where if you need to cut some 3.5khz in an acoustic guitar to stop it from becoming harsh and to warm it up while clearing some good space for the lead guitar, but this results in a VERY thick/muddy low end on certain playback systems? I've tried just controlling the harsh area with a multiband, or de-esser, dynamic EQ, you name it. But it really does need that static cut, but the low end goes wild..... Acoustic guitar mixing is driving me up the wall...
@LoversinPH
@LoversinPH 2 года назад
I suggest you focus on the lead guitar first, how you want it to sound and mix the acoustic guitar around it. Maybe you don't need to cut it on 3.5kHz
@mixbustv

If everything else fails try Soothe, if that one fails change the arrangement.
@CarsonHoy
@CarsonHoy 2 года назад
Try using soothe then layering an acoustic guitar plugin on the strums or a synth in the same notes 🤘🏼
@JamEZmusic86
@JamEZmusic86 2 года назад
@@mixbustv is there anything I can do without soothe? What did they used to do before that plugin existed? I don't think it's an arrangement issue at all because it is only strummed chords and a lead guitar, that's it! Plus I am copying an existing arrangement and the original sounds great. I can get over the issue by having the guitar much louder than the strummed chords but then it sounds obnoxiously loud. Is there a way to glue it so it sounds good at a much louder volume than the strums? Compression? I know it's very difficult to give advice on this without hearing it
@JamEZmusic86
@JamEZmusic86 2 года назад
@@LoversinPH I kind of do that, but then I go back and forward a bit. Normally when I think I'm done I find that the strums are masking the lead a bit too much no matter what order I mix in. It is always the 3.5k that needs a cut and the leads shine. When I do this it combats the harsh stuff that sounds bad on a laptop also

Hey great video, I just learned from Luca at DMI studio in Las Vegas this kool trick u might want to tell ur viewers, you can use instruments tracks instead of Aux tracks and they are much better to do automation and to move fx's around you can literally have a different fx on every snare hit etc.

how to have fun in this weekend: mix a bass synth, timpani, tuba, bass and of course: bass drums and taikos. Show it to someone of the street and ask if he heard more timpani or bass drums. Well, maybe i try this first haha

@ulisescortez2933
@ulisescortez2933 2 года назад
Yea I learned this new trick that makes it so much better to move automation fx around very fast and precise, instead of using aux tracks you use instrument tracks which make the automation into clips so it makes it very easy to use the same automation Fx in different places and since automation follows edit option it makes it so much easier, am sure u know this ur a genius when it comes to this, or maybe u just haven't seen it before.... I tried it and it's super good for fast working pace

@mixbustv 2 года назад
No I never use this, good tip. Luca actually messaged me few days ago 😄
@ulisescortez2933
@ulisescortez2933 2 года назад
@@mixbustv it's a good way to make automations and make them into clips in the instrument track and you can just drag and place in different places and also what I been doing in sub tracks like let's say the sub drums for example if it's an Aux track there's nothing in the edit window track it's just blank because there's really nothing there but with instrument tracks you can make it to a clip and color it now you can distinguish the sub tracks much easier than before, there's a few more but am sure you will figure it out I have no doubt. Yea Luca and his team are amazing at DMI STUDIOS I have been talking to them for a few months because I really want to be part of that team weather is for pay or free I just want to get the experience of being with professional, I'll do anything like I told Luca I will scrub toilets if it means hanging out and learning from them......I remember asking you months back but someone beat me to it, It would of been a dream learning from you everyday. I really admire your work no joke I one day want to get to wer you are, ur an amazing engineer like Luca and the rest of the top engineers, I just wish someone can give that opportunity like you guys got back in your days of starting out. Have a good day sr

David, about the part on parallel processing, I know EQs can cause phase shift, but can compressors cause them too by any chance when doing parallel compression? I’d assume no since parallel compression is a popular technique, and I never see or hear people warn about phase issues when talking about parallel compression, but I can’t find an absolute answer as to whether a compressor can shift phase, and/or cause potential phase cancellation. Thanks for any help on this!
@jle5779
@jle5779 2 года назад
No, unless theres a significant change in EQ curve because of color, you wont get phase shift. Parallel compression is kind of the same as actual compression, except you are changing the ADSR by mixing in the compression instead of just applying compression to the sound; like a DRY/WET knob
@mixbustv

@wdekeizer
@wdekeizer 2 года назад
@@mixbustv if you're shaping a sound, sure. But a saturator will actually help bring higher harmonics out rather than a parametric EQ. Over the years my mixes improved tenfold by barely doing any EQ and just focus on volume, saturators and basic compression techniques. EQ changes the phase of your original sound anyways. The problem with advising EQ boosting like this to noobs is they will apply it on everything and then ruins a whole mix. You should really only have to use MBC if your bass volume is inconsistent. If it's boomy, just cut below ~32hz. Use a kick/bass mixbus and slap a glue compressor and call it a day.
