Mam.. I have a wrist fracture... I have gone through a 45 days plaster on my hand... After that i feel good enough to do some light work with my hand.. But after a week of removing that plaster.. I have gone through x-ray.. But that broken bone did not join...what should i do next?
@Steve Pagani BC what you are describing is NOT the norm. I've seen thousands of wrist fractures over the past 19 years. This sounds like you need a 2nd opinion but I am sure there is a lot more to this.
Wish I had seen this 6 weeks ago. Just had my cast off an everything is frozen stiff. I am doing physiotherapy with great therapist but is very painful process as we have to break all the scar tissue that formed UGH😢I had surgery.
I am freaking out ... Cast was too tight and high up my fingers couldn't move them at all. Dr insisted on 4 weeks with the cast. Cast came off 3 days ago and I can't move any of my wrist fingers or rotate my arm. Excruciating pain. I knew I should've had the cast cut off the first week.
I fell on ice one month ago and fractured my wrist, my dominant arm. I got a closed reduction on the break and was casted. I’ve had this cast for one month now. Wearing a cast on my arm has made me very anxious. The cast is too tight and uncomfortable. I’m due to get my cast off in nine days, and then wear a brace, I cannot wait to get this cast off my arm. Having so much trouble sleeping at night. I am so miserable.
Thanks for sharing you wisdom with these videos Michelle. I’m two weeks ahead on my healing because of you. You are a MUCH appreciated healing angel :)
Hai Thanks for your positive tips. My wrist injured 3 months before. Still iam under treatment. My first doctor said don't shake your hands until treatment will finish. During this time my shoulder get pain, I can't open my hands, my elbow pain more. Due to their treatment my wrist overlapped. So I gone to second doctor, they adjusted my wrist & tied with sticks & clothes. This doctor said do exercise for your hands, otherwise your shoulder & elbow will be hard& not able to move. Which one be correct
I just had surgery on my left radius fractured wrist. The splint is too tight and goes to the second bend of my fingers. It feels like my hand is in a vise. I see him in two days and he will remove it. Can I ask him not to make it so tight and to let my fingers move? I want to cut it off now but I can’t risk it. It has now been 47 days since I got out of the splint. My fingers were so stiff. I started occupational therapy right away going three times a week. I wear a silicone scar patch over the incision to soften scar tissue that can trap tendons. I have burning and numbness in the center of my palm where it meets the wrist. I have been able to make a fist for the past week. I still get some swelling in my fingers but less often. I can’t bend my wrist backward or put any weight on it. I don’t know how much longer I’ll be in therapy. I get down in the dumps over the whole experience and just want my old life back. 90 days today since I broke my wrist and I have been in pain ever since. That’s a lot to cope with. I like when I sleep and can just dream and not deal with it. But then I wake up and stretch and the pain shoots down my arm and into my fingers like some kind of lightning bolt. Geez, here we go again I think. Another day of pain. When will it end?
Hello I have a question I was punched a wall about 1 month ago and my 4th metacarpal broken My doctor repaired the fracture using a surgical pin And after 3 weeks, he removed the pin from my hand using short-term anesthesia And put my hand Again in a splint-cast Now i think i have nerve damage i cannot move my 4th finger and my wrist and finger hurt so much and it get worse during night sometimes i try to move my finger i feel some thing is stuck in my hand and locks my finger I'm afraid I'll need surgery again So can you please tell me is this normal or not ? Sry for my bad eng i used Google Translate
I was unable to move 2 fingers after surgery. Even I thought there’s some blockage or something wrong with nerve as everybody said it’s just stiffness. But 3 days later after exercising I realised everybody was right. Did exercise punctually then I was able to move my fingers. So it’s normal. You just need to move fingers and perform exercise as adviced. Good luck and get well soon.
I have broken my right wrist 6 monts ago, and it looks normaal, one of my bones has moved a millimeter but the doctor said it wasnt a problem, but i cant lift heavy stuff, is that normal?
It can take close to a year to get your max strength back. There are 8 carpal wrist bones and 2 long bones, the radius and ulna. It can depend on which one was broken.
Having your right hand impaired when you are right handed is a unique torture. All the bad people in the world should have to experience it!!! I can’t even put my hair in a ponytail by myself. Writing with my left hand takes forever. My sympathies to all of us who can’t use our dominant hand. 😢😮
Totally relate. I am a 72 year old right handed woman and shattered the radius and broke the ulna in August. Was told only to pick up a half of a cup of coffee. Very frustrating. Just starting strengthening exercises. BUT the exercise so helpful. Not helpful is being told “at your age” everything will take longer. So I am trying very hard to prove that wrong. Hopefully these videos will be a big help.
Shout out to all of us who broke our wrists✅😭😅 it gets better EDIT: Wrist has been fully healed for over 6 months now. IT GOT BETTER. It's okay to feel slightly hopeless and afraid at times but I found solace and peace in comment sections and videos such as these. Just take it ONE day at a time and before you know it you are back to normal.
Comforting to know I’m not alone. Thank you so much for all of your helpful videos. Fell 12/6 - first place took X-rays and said “no fractures” then I went to orthopedic doctor on 12/16 when I couldn’t handle pain anymore. Fracture in ulna. Having such trouble sleeping!
Yes, having your dominant wrist broken is truly bad.. but... having both wrists broken at the same time is worse. Ugh. Thats what I have. One had 5 fractures and required a plate and screws... the other luckily was simply broken without the need for surgery. It took 12 days until I could get the surgery since it happened right before the Christmas holidays. Im 3 weeks post op and working very hard to regain some use in my fingers and wrist with my removable cast on my surgical wrist. Im an avid golfer and want so very bad to get back to the golf course. Im started PT a few days ago and will do so for a couple of months or so. Im also looking for helpful videos to assist me in my healing. My motivation to get back to golfing is pushing me to work hard on regaining the use of my wrists. Good luck to all who have been affected by a broken wrist... or worse yet... both wrists...
Wow both! How did that happen ? If you don’t mind me asking….😢 Hope & pray your recovery is speedy and coming along better than when you first wrote this message. ❤️🩹
@@carolinallanos1399 Im 12 weeks out from original fall causing 2 broken wrists... and 10 weeks post op on the one wrist that got a plate and 9 screws. It has been a difficult road but things are certainly improving. I still am in twice weekly OT to try to regain function. Got a few issues but MD feels most tend to resolve by 6 months or so. He said its likely that I will lose about 25% of my ROM. So how did I break them both? The short version of the story is my neighbor's dog charged me in the street in front of my home. I tried to back up quickly to get away from the dog but stumbled backwards landing on my wrists. I tried to get up quickly so the dog wouldn't chew on my neck. When I pushed up, I knew immediately that my wrists were broken. This all happened on Christmas Eve Eve. Its been a few very rough months but things are getting better now.
Omg hugs and prayers!!! Whatta miserable way to be chased and also in severe pain i remember screaming my lungs out when i broke my wrist and crying my eyes out let alone 2 !!! While being chased by a dog !! Omg so how are you now ? Also how did manage to escape the dog while in severe pain?
I fell while hiking 7/2024 and broke BOTH wrists and left elbow. Ugg. I am recovering quickly and doing much better. After 2 surgeries and physical therapy things are going better. 3 weeks after surgery the dr took off all casts and I started moving my wrists. Thank God for my husband and family.
Thanks everyone for sharing. I’m a psychologist. Learned to do nondominant writing as a way to access another part of the brain. Very effective! And since my right hand is broken. I’m now “eating my words”🤪. Painful but interesting!!
I am nearly 59. Female. Slipped and fell at a gas station. I have bilateral distal radial and ulnar styloid process fractured. As they are displaced I am having orif to both on Dec9. Injury was dec1. Horrible pain. Can’t wait to get healing!!!
I'm a bass guitar player, was in a cast for an right ulna nightstick fracture.. Started in a long arm cast.. Moved to a short arm cast.. I played bass the entire time while in a cast.. It definitely helped in my healing.
Broke right wrist, surgery 9 days later. OT 6 days after that. Only had splint/brace on. Was told to move fingers as soon as nerve block wore off after surgery. So less than 3 weeks out, I'm doing better than I thought (im 61).
Thank you. I recently found your channel and I cannot put in words how helpful some of your videos are in my recovery process. Typing this with my other hand even if it's super slow and frustrating to tell you how grateful I feel.
i just broke my wrist last week. Really whats hurt even more than my wrist is most of the rest of my body: I fell down most of a flight of concrete steps. so ive basically been feeling like i got hit by a bus. Saw the Ortho Doc for the first time yesterday and she said what i was afraid of, :You DEFINITELY need surgery:😫anyway I'm worried about how much independence i can maintain over the next 3 or more months. doing things one handed is so hard as you all well know. I dont have a husband and my daughter has done what she can but shes got her own stresses and responsibilities. Any suggestions for resources about living day to day with a broken wrist?
You didn't state your age. I am 63 and fractured my dominant hand which also required surgery. I didn't do much for the first 3 days after surgery, but you would be surprised how you will adapt and figure things out.
Very well said! What this lady is suggesting is that understanding your body is everything! When you have a traumatic experience such as, breaking a bone or loss of function too a limb that you are not used too losing function of, you're first reaction is to not move that limb until it has healed. The only way for that limb to repair itself is by learning to use the muscles surrounded it again. By letting the injury seize and contract without any input for long periods of time, you will only immobilize that limb even more. That's not saying that if it is very painful, then carry on! You should never over do it but at the same time, do not let that limb stay stagnant for too long! This lady explains it better than I ever could, so many thanks too her for looking out for us and sharing this information! The true heroes never wear capes... and for some reason, everyone loves capes until their life depends on it! Thank you so much!👍How the f**k is it that our taxes don't support people like you, but instead go to the 1% that suck everything beautiful out of this planet dry, I will never understand! A good deed wasted at the hands of corporate greed! There's so many beautiful minds that will switch off if money didn't wake them up every morning! It's a sad dying world full of greedy human parasites! Money controls our pathetic existence!
I got my fracture on 2nd june 2024 and now FINALLY i am getting it removed tomorrow My left wrist was broken and now i am so done with this cast due to itching and as my country is being hitten by heat waves the cotton inside is all damp now and I AM SO DONE All my fellows whose wrist is broken KEEP GOING AND MOVE YOUR FINGERS AND DO EXERCISE.......FIGHTING!!💜💌
I broke mine a month ago. Just got my cast off. It was a special type of torture. I broke out in a rash and was itching. It will get better. I promise.
I broke mine on June 30th. My cast was too tight for two weeks until i was taken by the doctor in. It caused a huge swelling. I developed carpal tunnel syndrome and the pain kills me. I cant even blow on it without a pain. Two more weeks I hope.
Lucky for me i found your channel because i am now suffering from a recent injury in my right hand and in need of such expert tutorials or lessons like this 😃
Your advice on wrist flexion exercise after a fracture been great. From the victim of wrist fracture. Thanks for the informative videos and hope you consider my comment 🤗🤗🤗
I got my wrist broken and dislocated while playing football. When i looked at my hand i fell i thought it was gonna paralyzed for the rest of my life😅 it's been a week and i still feel slight pain.
hello miss, I fractured my left hand wrist 6 weeks ago, they told me in the hospital that it was something minor, like it was not that bad.I had a cast for only one week and the doctor took it of, and my left ulna is sticking out way more than my right hand, It don’t hurt any more, I can actually do a few push ups and left up like 40 pounds,Does that means that they didn’t put my cast properly or that my wrist still swollen? pls help🙏🏽
If your wrist is the wrong shape. Get a second opinion. Mine was badly set & I suffered pain for more than thirty years. Finally I got a hand specialist to look at it. He fixed it with a plate & screws. It's still not perfect but it's a hell of a lot better. I've got about 90% function. The first doctor way thirty years ago was a rude arsehole when I asked why it was out of shape & feeling shitty. Don't take no for an answer.
I have been crying .. found comfort in this. (Main issue beside poor healthcare system in America miss information, multiple different ways to do the same thing there’s no consistency.)… my heart hurts. My brain hurts my body hurts… swelling cuts, … mahalo
I am an athlete and am doing everything you suggest. I am learning to do things differently. Tomorrow it will be one week. I started on day two exercises for my fingers. I ride my indoor trainer Waiting on the treadmill because it was a treadmill fall where I broke my wrist
Your comments about therapy are interesting and your videos are great. I had a distal radius fracture, without displacement, six weeks ago. After my cast came off (this week), my doctor told me I should wait three more weeks before starting therapy. I was not OK with that so I asked him for the prescription-- so that I could start as soon as possible. Doctor also didn't recommend exercises with my fingers while the cast was on; but of course it hurt much more then and I was afraid of disturbing the healing. I'd like to know whether it's OK to go without the brace during the day, when I'm home. You said somewhere that we would wear the brace 15 hours a day, so perhaps that means only at night and when I leave the house.
You are absolutely right on the mistakes. Thank you 😊 I’m currently recovering from wrist strain 😔 but feeling confident your videos will educate me. 👍🏼🌸🌷
I had an injury about 6 weeks ago, unfortunate situation. There was never any swelling, bruising or deformity. It got better during these 6 weeks, but it's still not fully recovered. Didn't go to the doc because I have full range of motion with mild pain which indicates that, thankfully and hopefully, it isn't that big a deal. Internet told me it's normal to feel mild pain and discomfort for up to 6 months...So leaving this comment here and hope my future self comes back to it with a fully healed wrist.
thank you so much for the info and the tips for recovery.i am 2 days into recovery from a motor scooter accident and i am 73 years old and i don't have a car.
Thank you so much! I wish I had seen this sooner. Wish the ortho PA I saw had seen it too. My cast was too tight and too high up my hand. I was told about a few finger flexing exercises by friends. Having OT now and hoping to make up for what I lost. Swelling and pain after two months continues - your video is confirming and reassuring as I've been concerned whether this is normal. Thank you again!
Hi, about 2 weeks ago I fell in an outstretched hand and it hurt for about 1 week and a half. I went to the decor when it stopped hurting and they think it is just a sprain but they suggest a mri to check for scaphoid fracture. can I still have a scaphoid fracture even if nothing hurts anymore at all when I move it. I just moved it for so long and nothing hurts anymore. Can it be a scaphoid fracture or do you think it’s just a sprain?
Please how long will this last, am 5 weeks now after surgery and can’t cope, seeing physio but feel like my wrist will never be the same and that I won’t be able to do any hobbies and things I used to. Feel so depressed
Thank you for these videos! Very helpful on my journey to full recovery from a radius break and shattered radial head! Surgery and plate placed in wrist and titanium replacement for the radial head!
Terrific video telling patients some basic things to do during healing. I will add that the most common problem I see is a surgeon is not having that fracture fixed when it is displaced enough that will later limit function greatly the newer techniques, allow for a simple outpatient procedure that will allow much faster recovery since the wrist fracture is now stabilized. Collaboration with our valued therapy colleagues is critical as mentioned in this very good video
Thank you Dr. Badia for bringing awareness to this common problem. You are right, there is a lot of benefit to fixation of even the mildly displaced fx you mentioned. The daily struggle with post traumatic pain and swelling, loss of motion, numbness/tingling, months of stiff fingers, and more can be minimized.
No one told me that you need more calories while you are rebuilding your bone and I wound up losing 7 pounds, which delayed my healing. I was also doing extra walking bc I couldn't drive, like back packing to the grocer's. Finally found a RU-vid video on how to drive with one hand, it was a lifesaver! 😊 Totally agree physical therapy is wonderful! I go three times a week and do exercises at home. The hand massages at the PT are great, they reduce swelling, and increase mobility, sometimes they hurt like crazy bc they really push your tendons/muscles/fascia. For those on Medicare, you're allowed as many sessions as medically necessary at the PT, so don't hesitate to go!
@@milZ1 hi Mil! I have Medicare and Medigap G, which is a supplement I pay an additional monthly fee for. Medigap G covers any Medicare copays. So if a service is covered by Medicare, its covered by your monthly Medigap premium. So for me my PT has been no charge, I've been going 3 days a week. With these two coverages, as long as the patient requires therapy, you can continue with it free of charge once your annual deductible has been paid. I asked my PT about it when I first started up, bc I didn't want to "spend" all my PT sessions early, if I had a limited number. He said that PTs and doctors have been asking for this change for years, but it was Trump who used an executive order to allow patients to get PT for as long as it was medically necessary. I've had over 50 sessions at this point. I'm not sure if the same rule applies to Advantage Plans, or if the new rule will be rescinded under the new administration. But as of 2021 (and possibly earlier), PT under Medicare and Medigap G is at no charge after the annual deductible ($210 in 2021) is met, and the therapy is considered medically necessary by the physician and therapist. Medicare enrollment is here as of October. So you may want to review your current plan, as well as any changes to the benefits, to see what best suits your individual situation Best to you! 🌱
I broke my wrist on June 2nd, I got my cast off yesterday. I am exhausted, I did not sleep well at all l since I broke my wrist. I am clausterphobic, I woke up in panics, and could not get comfortable ....and it seemed like my forearm was wanting to explode out of the cast .
@@shenanigans8799 that’s exactly what I’m going through now 😢I broke my wrist a few days ago and go to the orthopedic apt today. It has been so painful and swollen with this splint they put on at the ER
@@LadyAnut Keep it elevated, sleep with your wrist over your head at night, I also slept with a small fan on at night to keep air blowing on it to keep it comfortable, which also keep it from feeling like it was exploding out of the cast. I broke mine while at home on Hawaii, I was there for 2 weeks after , it was hot, humid and miserable, making the situation worse.
oh my... I am so claustrophobic with my very snug wrapping post surgical repair from a week ago. It has been a huge mental battle trying to keep a calm head. I have no idea what comes next, a cast or a removable brace?? My hope is for the latter... H@@shenanigans8799
Since I had a wrisk fracture, it's now the fifteenth day and there is no surgery and the bone is Returned to the doctor in position and fiber cement is now applied. Can I move it and exercise?
Hi Michelle..I have just found your channel. I fractured my wrist 6 days ago..I currently have a back slab (I'm in the UK, so I'm not sure the US do the same thing) cast on, which comes up to my middle knuckles. So movement is very limited. This is being changed this week. I am so glad I found your video as I will definitely be asking for a cast that fits. Thank you. I look forward to using your resources in my recovery. X
This was a great place to start, yes my Dr said time for therapy, but the first appointment I could get is 10 days out, I do not want to wait. I had a radial fracture that resulted in surgery and a metal plate . I do pottery for a living and I am 70 , never the less I do not have time to not be moving forward. So happy this video is here
I am having a collies fracture. Currently i have a plaster on . I can move my fingers but the doctors tied the cast / plaster so tight that sometimes i try to remove the plaster . I told my sister who is a mbbs student about it and she claimed that it is completely okay and there's nothing to worry about but believe me or not i my fingers are sticked with each other
Literally just fractured my wrist today. I’m in a splint until I see the doctor on Monday. Should I go ahead and do arm and finger movements? Also icing once an hour over the splint.
Had a non displaced distal radius fracture 7 weeks ago just got my cast off yesterday. Am going to do home exercises for 6-8 weeks. See a physio in between because I'm dieing to get back into weight lifting! It's also my non dominant hand.
I’m definitely doing the first mistake. My doctor did tell me to move my fingers, but I’ve been kind of stubborn about it. Do I move them even with a lot of pain in different areas of my arm? Is that normal?
My doctor recommended me to press a rubber ball one day after the operation. I told him it hurts but he just said if the pain is not comming from the fracture then it will get better with time. 2 days later I was able to stretch and bend all my fingers and make a fist without any pain.
QUESTION: I fractured both of my wrists when I was 14. Both casted for 6-8 weeks, no surgery. 4 years later, I began to work on heavy equipment, which required the use of a heavy hydraulic impact gun. Heavy vibrations on the hands/wrists. Now at 63, I have arthritis in both wrists. I’ve had steroid injections in both wrists twice over an 8-month period, which hasn’t helped with the pain. No family history of arthritis. Is it at least as likely as not that the fractured wrists and the heavy occupational vibrations attributed to my current arthritis in my wrists? Anyone?
I never went to the doc 😅 I am sure that whatever is wrong will be ok with time. Just trying to figure out if I should be moving this thing and how long swelling is common. Week 3 and swelling and bruising is still pretty gnarly but even if I did fracture it, I mean it’s just gonna go into a cast? Yeah, I’ll just save the money and time and keep trucking. 😂
My father has wrist fracture 1 month ago and got to surgery doctor putted the plate with the screw and now its been more tham 1 months but my father is only able to move fingers but not the wrist😢 there is no improvement in hand movements can u please help me with this problem .
I just had spinal cord decompression and fusion (c2-c4) surgery in March, now here it is July and I recently found out that I now have lumbar stenosis that I will probably need surgery for in the near future, and last wednesday I slipped and fell and they believe I fractured my wrist. lol. I'm already in physical therapy for the neck and lower back issues, and now I'm going to have another referral for my therapy to include my wrist. I told my physical therapist that they should just ask for a referral to include therapy for my whole body LOL But seriously, I do have a question - Whenever my left arm is extended in any way, my fingers start tingling. Same goes for when I try to hold something in that hand. I'm currently not in a cast, but have worn a splint ever since the fall....aside from the times I take it off to ice my wrist. I'm just wondering if a cast might be the best option in my case?
I broke my wrist three days ago and I'm in a splint and still have the same shirt on because I can't pull it off over my cast it would be nice to have help but I live alone. I did manage to roll up my sleeve today though with my toes😅 I'll never take my right hand for granted again. I am right-handed too
Hi Doctor, I want to make a really quick question. I had a fractured from my radius and Ulna and recently it's been painful and annoying feeling on that hand. Is there any excercise you would recommend? or ways to re adjust it? It was fine for 20 years.
Im a hairstylist.my domanint hand got a distal radius crack(fracture).got a splint.im on week 3.When can i cut and do blowdrys again? Dr said from week 4.im scared i mess it up if i use my wrist too early??????
My elderly mother had a wrist fracture recently and the clinic we went to put a $275 brace (the same as Rite Aid sells for $35) on it and set up an appointment in three weeks with an ortho doctor. After three weeks we saw the doc and her wrist was now S shaped and he said the cheap brace was to blame, so then he put her wrist in a cast for another three weeks and now it’s further calcified into the S shape. The original x-rays show a straight wrist, now really crooked, is re-breaking the only way to straighten it again? I’m pissed because the ortho doc was giving the 😬 look and said, “Well at least you didn’t have to have surgery.”
I broke my left wrist almost 6 months ago and had it pinned and screwed back together. I followed all the exercises but it still isn't back to normal. I have full mobility but my hand/fingers are still swollen and I cannot push up with using this hand as it is excruciating when I try. I can and do use it 'normally' except for weight bearing. Is this normal? I'm female aged 53. Many thanks
I’m 2 weeks after wrist surgery & still am ultra sensitive with a sort of burning pain on top of hand - though surgery was fixation underneath wrist. Anyone else experiencing this?
Hey! I had a question:my radius of the right was fractured in 2018 , i started gym yesterday i felt when i lift weights while doing pull ups the fractured site still pains (mild) , should i continue to pull weights by reducing them or completely stop lifting
If I return to my hobbies, my wrist immediately starts to hurt and worsens as I continue. I appreciate the message, but there are always issues with one-size-fits-all advice.
I tripped and fell on a walk fractured my wrist, so I have some ptsd on sidewalks. As of now, I have stitches so I'm afraid to sweat too much get bacteria in it.?
Exacty same mistakes i am doing day by day. But after accident i am too afraid to face my problems anymore. But i want my hand function back. Please help me😢
I have my wrist fracture abt 2.5 or 3 months ago. I just got recovered but iam not able to move my hand upside down it just stops after moving at one rotaional order plz help me
got a really bad wrist facture. doctor said "its as bad as it can be without leaving my body". told me i might need to get it fused losing mobility permanently. im really scared, im only 24
I broke my wrist playing football (not the American kind) and I’m able to do all the stuff you can do with just one arm but ever since it happened a can’t sleep. Anyway to help this?
I fractured my wrist in 4th grade. I’m in 7th grade now. I wore a cast thing for a little bit but then I stopped. 3 years later and my bone is still out of place
