It was a baboon spider which bit the young Tolkien in South Africa and the resultant trauma probably lies at the root of his creation of the nightmarish Shelob in "The Lord of the Rings "and the Mirkwood spiders in "The Hobbit".

I was always petrified of my African red trapdoor. Kept her in a container on my desk after a fresh re-house. Dropped a pencil while filling stuff out and she struck the side of her enclosure. Then held a defensive position with venom dripping from her fangs for hours.

In terms of the venom, the nastier reports in the medical literature involved P. murinus slings where the adults had less incidence of psychedlic effects which gives the species its feared reputation among novice keepers.

It bewilders me how any tarantula could be hated. My two H. Mac girls (though now old) are darlings who’ve never even raised a fang at me. I remember waking up in the early hours a few years back to find I hadn’t closed the door on Daisy’s tank properly. She was sitting on my headboard, watching over me whilst I slept❤ (the little one went back into her tank as good as gold). Never kept H. gigas but I have 4 H. crassipes. They’re very shy & like to skinny-dip so my larger one (and they’re VERY large) got an extra large water bowl as a jacuzzi ! Not got any obt’s at the mo but 4 P. murinus UMV & 3 mikumi juveniles. They’re shy but not aggressive, one UMV even went on a little adventure last week, walking up & down all over me before going back into her enclosure (her choice). All tarantulas should be loved, people should do species research to avoid disappointment !👍👍👍👍

I guess when i came into the hobby i thought that these characteristics define some species like the OBT. And now that i was fortunate enough to acquire 3 spiders with more to come, I have already learned that every spider can be different. The Murinus was supposed to be this menace and mine is actually pretty calm most of the time, as soon as I open the enclosure, she goes to hide. Not even once did she try to defend herself and her takedowns are mostly uneventful. Meanwhile my Brachypelma Hamorii takes several roaches at once, randomly jumps on the tongs and catches pray mid air, rolling around with it

When I saw the title to this video, my first pick, immediately that popped into my head was the OBT. It's a love/hate relationship. I have a dozen slings and they are the most difficult I found to raise. Feeding time is a challenge to not have them run out of the little deli cup they are housed in the minute you open to drop food in. I do have a method that works for me. I do all maintenance over a huge pot and when they escape they drop into the large pot, with several catch cups, paint brushes and tongs I can successfully get them safely back inside but feeding time is not a quick choir without its challenges. Given that, I still absolutely love them. I refer to them as my trouble childs!

I love the fact that there are so many species so that everyone can satisfy his own taste. I love P. muticus instead ahaha, that red-brick colour is so unique and in Europe are always sold out after 2 minutes. Gonna get one in November (female) I hope.

I had a Togo as a freebie. It is the only spider that has genuinely frightened me. Granted I have yet to own a cobalt. I thought I had seen fast from my ornamentals, but somehow, this was double the speed. I caught it.... barely. Beautiful for its short life. Was a male.

I have an Orange Baboon and a Dark Color or DC orange baboon. My obt is like you explained, he stays behind his flower pot mostly all the time besides night time. My DC OBT is super confident and stays out 100% of the time. Also likes to put on a show when I change his water 😅

WHAT!!! The Heteroscodra Maculata is my second favorite tarantula of all time. I have one now and it is definitely very reclusive, but I see it at least once each day on the cork bark. It's also defensively bitten and slapped at its food, but I still love my little Tetra.

I love my T. Vagens, a great looking spider. Never have I gotten a threat pose or hairs kicked so far. I just keep an eye on her when I open the enclosure for feeding as sometimes she charges towards the opening, other times heads for her hide. Never know what your going to get lol.

I bought an obt when I was young in the hobby on looks alone knowing nothing about it. First night it got out while I was trying to show it off to some friends at a party I had at my house. I was able to catch it and get it back in it enclosure then immediately did some research. Listed as extremely fast, quick to bite, and usually wet bites. I can tell you from first hand experience it absolutely bites multiple times and as a first form of defense. That being said like mentioned in this video it was a very easy spider to have and care for just a but of an anxiety attack to re house and clean the cage. I would and likely will add one to my collection in the future once I get the wife to chill about the three spiders I currently have lol

Shocked by the texas brown being on here!!! I only have one tarantula, and that's what I got! He's actually quite defensive for a texas brown but I think their earthy colours are really lovely, and in my experience they like to be out in the open for the most part so you get to enjoy their company.

Love my OBT. Got him as one of my first 10 tarantulas and he’s probably one of my chillest ones. My tip to owning an OBT, get them as young as you can. Maybe not a sling but a juvenile that hasn’t matured yet would be best. Your confidence will grow along with your tarantula. Before you know it, you’re completely comfortable with a matured fully grown OBT and you can then start exploring the amazing world of Old World tarantulas.

We have a bucket beneath our AC in the back yard to catch condensation water and use for plants. We found one of those first one's floating in there which was the first live tarantula I have ever seen in the 30 yrs I've lived in california. It was barely moving but it WAS moving so I dumped the bucket over our fence and looked 20 mins later and it was gone. I hope it got some heat then took off bc it was close to dying from drowning and temperature I'd bet. That water was almost ice cold.

My OBT was a freebie included among the very first tarantulas I ever bought, and I was very nervous about it, but honestly Cheeto is super chill. I give them oversized enclosures so they have plenty of space and a few things to web up and they've never given me a single problem in rehousing. Definitely not as chill as my avic, who got her first enclosure shattered in the middle of the night by a cat and didn't throw up a single threat pose, or my t albo, who is basically a teddy bear. But i love seeing their furry little orange feet outside the burrow when they're hungry
