I never missed an oil change, and the mechanic I took my car to said it has a collapsed engine valve. Personally I feel like that diagnosis is wrong. I'm wondering if she might have meant the PVC valve. Seems like a better match to me. Car shaking, lack of power, and engine stalling. Oh and misfiring! That or some other pressure issue. My usual mechanic is booked for 2 weeks and I'm scared to drive it with the stalling and power issues. Anyone on here feel like guessing? 😅

My 2013 Corolla has been rock solid. 160k miles so far. My last Corolla I sold to a friend and currently has 360k. He still drives it today. Other than doing the recommended maintenance I've had no issues but will keep an eye on these top 5 issues. Thanks for making this. My car is a 5 speed manual and none of these top 5 will leave me stranded. Even if my starter goes I can roll my car pop the clutch and start my car. If Toyota ever decides to stop making the manual versions of these cars I will be the first person in line to purchase the last manual and keep it as long as I can.

I have a 2010 Corolla LE, bought it used with 24k miles, now up to 188k and the starter just went. Can’t complain about that. Only other quirk is the mechanical trunk latch broke, but the smart key still opens it. She’s also bad in the snow, but aside from that she’s incredibly reliable. I’ve followed the routine maintenance guidelines, got NH oil undercoating figuring rust is one of few things that can kill a Corolla, and I’m hoping we have many more years together.

The 09-13 Corolla XRS has the 2AZ-FE 2.4L engine the the problems are different on the XRS models. The most common issue is the valve cover gasket leaking oil onto the block and the oil consumption gets worse overtime as the milage or Kilometers increase. @addledhead
@addledhead 26 дней назад
The VVT-i gear on these models also has a known issue, there was a Technical Bulletin released. Basically the locking pin fails and so on a cold start when there's no oil pressure, the VVT will rattle and cause irregular valve timing. Sounds like a really rough cold start, but fine when driving/starting warm. If not taken care of will eventually rattle itself to death, potentially blowing the engine. Can be fixed without dropping the engine, but is still a quite involved, expensive fix. If doing it, you might as well look at replacing the timing chain and guides, and potentially the water pump too.

Interesting. I have a 2009 with 250k and haven't had these issues....yet. I have replaced the water pump and I understand that is pretty common. Also being an 09 it burns oil, a quart or so every 3000 miles so not so bad. The PCV valve is under the intake manifold so that is a way more work to replace than it should be. Otherwise a great car.

The water pump and alternator should be up on this list ! With the starter going bad had all three replaced early in it's life for a Toyota. 2011 Corolla, already had to loctite window regulator bolts, replace door lock actuators and the WORST problem not mentioned is phaser gear rattle on startup- that is a HUGE problem with 2009 to 2013 toyotas ( and even some american cars). Cheap fix for me was increasing the viscosity of the oil, it helped prevent it from leaking out of the phaser gear unless it was really hot out ( 80 degrees or more).

Very common on the 09-10s. I would use thicker oil all the time to lessen this issue (not complete fix) but I live in the mid-Atlantic, it gets to cold in the winter. I do use thicker (10-30) in the summer and it DOES help the oil from draining out the top of the cam gear phasers. Though I’ve read for people the noise began around 40k-60k now at 220k still does it every start up and no issues, yes it sounds horrible but it seems to be just a noise you’ll have to learn to live with.

@@emmanuel3981 It’s colder than normal now where I live so I’m using 0-20. I switched to the factory oil filter from Toyota and the rattle isn’t as often at start up, duration and noise level decreased as well. The theory is that the Toyota filters do not have plastic or metal caps on the ends like other oil filter brands like Purolator, Mobil 1 have on them. Just get it if you haven’t already they’re great cars.

I have 2012 corolla 1.8 and the problems I have is it shakes when I brake. It makes a clicking noise when i make a u turn. It just started making a rattle noise where the pulleys are however the pulleys are intact and not the ones making the noise. Can you diagnose that just by my explanations?

Water pump, cv axle and quit racing around so hard on the poor car.
@azaz911c
@azaz911c 3 года назад
Shaking when braking may be warped front disc rotors or worn rear brake drums. If they aren't too worn, the rotors or drums can be machined for smoothness. If they are too worn, they can be replaced. The clicking noise when turning, is likely a worn CV joint. This can be fixed with by replacing with a new CV axle. I recommend replacing both sides and choosing an original Toyota or high quality replacement part. Lower quality ones don't last and lead to other problems like vibrations. None of these parts is too expensive, but there is some labor cost involved. I'm not sure about the pulley noise. You may want to start with a simple visual check that your accessory belt is not frayed or cracked and has good tension. As someone else suggested it might be a water pump. Or it could be a worn pulley bearing.
@boolin01

Well basically if your car shaking when u brake that means you need to change your rotors and if it does makes noises you brake pads needs to be replaced Don’t freak out very small problem and low cost!

I take my 2010 Corolla off-road regularly, currently up to 150,000 miles. It gets some strange looks from the truck bros, lol people forget lifted sedans are just as capable of moderate off-road driving. I have one of these Corollas and it has lived up to its reputation. It hasn't had any problems, it's efficient, and reasonably comfortable for everyday driving. If that's what your looking for, this is good choice. I think it could easily go 200000 miles with regular oil changes. It handles alright but if you want something sporty, exciting or luxurious, then you'll have to choose something else.
