Wow, a transmission pan with a drain plug, that's a bonus. I had the exact same hard shifting problem in my '07 Ranger. I changed the transmission fluid with Amsoil. It fixed the problem, drastically improved my gas mileage and power. The lesson learned..... factory fluids are horrible!!!!
On another comment, customer changed the transmission fluid with XYZ off brand.... it breaks the transmission and customer got mad the manufacturer did not honor the warranty!
@@slothypunk Hmmmm. I've never known of a transmission fluid causing one to "break". Wear out prematurely, yes, but not break. Chances are, there was something wrong with it long before the fluid was changed. That said, we as car owners are allowed to use whatever we want to....fluids, brake pads, rotors, fan belts etc. and it doesn't void warranties.
@@TheBeatenPaths you are correct, but if your car is new and something happen to yours when using off brand just to save a few buck you will have an up hill battle with the dealer when you try to claim for warranty repair. That's all I'm saying... Of course you are free doing whatever you want, you just need to choose which is more convinient for you!
Interestingly enough my 2017 TRD Off-Road didn't have any of those issues despite most of them are honored by the manufacturer and fixed for free. Unlike most other particularly American brands, Toyota still remains as the most reliable and dependable manufacturer in entire automotive industry.
@@jamesdean4972 Japanese defense force is real, and they're busy developing ways to counter China's actual threat. They're busy creating a gen 6, smart fighter aircraft as well.
I had the leaking third brake problem too in a 2019 Off Road. 1st time at 5000 miles and replaced for free under warranty. Started again at 18000 miles, which brought me here trying to decide if I want to do myself or take for my last warranty claim before the warranty is up. Leak is apparent when interior dome lights would stay on when on auto mode, even when driving.
Just LOVE watching this guy! If it were not for him, probably wouldn't watch much or any but he makes these videos so much fun and are VERY informative! Thanks!
Nice video! 2017 automatic SR5 4x4 V6 w/ tow package, 50k miles been west to east coast twice. No issues mechanically so far for me. Only issue have had was water leaking into headliner from rear cargo light, I suspected a bad gasket. Simple fix with silicon until I replace someday. As far as shifting goes it definitely likes to hunt for low rpms when changing cruising speed around town, and noticed some hard down shifting due to that tuning when I decelerated quickly to stop. Had to change my driving habits and really let the shifting do more work accelerating and decelerating. I will say it doesn’t shift as smooth as a lot of automatics I have driven such as some subarus. However this little truck runs like a dream off road and for me has just been a great vehicle. Nothing is perfect but this truck has been close to perfect for me. Hope this puts some other owners at ease. Peace.
I thought Toyota issued a recall for water seeping into 3rd brake light. I got a notice about it when I owned my 2018 but never resolved that one or the fuel pump recall then I parted ways with it while profiting on the sale now thinking about buying another before the model is transformed for 2024
That’s a recall. Currently having mine fixed. Apparently they also pull out the entire interior of the vehicle and test for mold. If there is any found, they essentially replace the entire interior after chemically cleaning the body interior… it’s going to take a while…
Would love to see more videos on 3rd gen Tacoma...your FJ series has been a life saver and with lots of these tricks on the road it would be great to see...start with the idler pulleys!
I own a 2016 tacoma trd sport 4 door long bed with 53k miles on it. The only problem I started to get it's the cruise control. When I turn it on (but not always though) says: check cruise control system and doesn't work. Ahh , I also had a problem where all the refrigerant leaked out, that was like $700. Great video!
@@MichaelRatkowski-u2x You gotta use that special oil filter wrench, pop the plastic piece out of the oil filter, let the oil drain out of the filter, make sure the o rings on the filter are correctly placed, use torque wrench to put the filter back on. Edit: oh and also remove the skid plate and put it back on every time you do an oil change if your using the stock skid plate.
2018 Tacoma. Rear passenger axle seal, idler pulley, fuel pump recall, TSS front sensor recall. Just hit 30k miles and I am on a first name basis with several of the employees at the dealership. I feel like Norm from Cheers.
2019 fuel pump recall also. What i think is the serpentine belt, starts squeaking horrendously the other day. After researching and what you said, maybe its a pulley instead. The battery leaks causing corrosion at the base of the positive terminal. I have 1 month of warranty left to see whats up.
Thank you for such an excellent video. You covered all issues so well there is no need for questions. I own a 2020 sr5 v6 and I found out that the transmission seemed to work erratically because it works also along with the front distancing sensor, so is more like a safety bonus feature like if someone cuts in front of you it will try to slow down. Anyway I have put only about 2500 miles on it and I love this truck, the only thing that bothers me is definitely the rear view mirror seems to big and low blocking some of my view specially when turning right.
The delayed downshift and gear "hunting" in cruise has been a common Toyota truck auto trans issue going way back to the 2005 five speed. This is a separate issue from hard shifts and delayed engagement. It was programmed this way to maximize gas mileage by keeping rpms low. They just went too far and made it annoying. 2005 Tundra in my case, not just 3rd gen Tacoma.
That’s funny. I’m new to Toyota, and it doesn’t bother me because I like the older, great, tough design. The wife’s 2020, and my 2021 4Runner does the same. I usually just foot drive instead of the hunting cruise control. It’s downhill to work 6900 ft to 5000 ft over 62 miles, so I use it the one way.
11k+ miles on my '21 TRD Off Road 4x4 v6. Only thing I have noticed so far is that the engine response under hard acceleration seems to be intermittent. Sometimes very responsive, other times it is less responsive than it should be. My previous truck was an '18 SR 4x4 2.7 which had a master cylinder and a TSS sensor recall which Toyota addressed.
Transmission tune on the automatics from the factory are pretty crappy. I find myself lifting off the throttle to force a shift pretty regularly. It “hunts” for gears. Aftermarket tunes seem to be the solution, “speed boost” looks like it gives you the most options for the price, with presets ranging from economic to race.
I remember growing up as a kid my father owned a 1976 Toyota pickup and a 1985 Toyota pickup and he never had any issues with them all these modern vehicles are nothing but electronics and crap inside of them, they have nothing but problems with them
Many including myself had issues with the howling rear diff. Between 54-62 mph the noise was loud. Rear diff was replaced at 400 miles. 2nd rear diff is tolerable. Rear shocks leaked oil at 25,000 miles. 2017 SR5 DCLB
I had the same issue my passenger rear shock leaked completely out and when I call the dealer, the service department said are u sure it was not from the way you drive the truck. Wow really ? What a stupid lady.
My 2017 Tacoma manual 4wd with 40k Miles had rear differential replacement 3 times finally had to get a new carrier assembly/axel for the fix. Also had low compression and cylinder wall scoring with no explanation the motor had to be rebuilt. Cold start pop 5/7 days a week it’s a know issue has the leak down test and what do you know 2 out of 4 cylinders were bad. Get a leak down test before you are out of warranty!!! Rings were fried! Rebuilt the motor and Toyota bought it back because it still had cold start pop. Trucks run lean! Cause premature wear on your motor. Hence why they ditched the 5spd because they have had issue with cold start pop and my lo l dealership buys one back a week.!! No joke!!!
Toyota currently has a recall on a low pressure fuel pump, not only on the 3nd gen Taco but also others of their cars and trucks. Hundred of thousands of vehicles are affected.
Everyone complaining about the tacoma bogging down, if not already done check with both tsb update and make your dealership perform it free of charge. Than you should notice an improvement immediately driving it off the lot. Remember this type of transmission is design to learn the way you normally drive after it does this you should be satisfied granted you didn't add a bunch of extra weight to the truck. Good luck to all.
@@1AAuto - Did you get paid by Ford, GM, or Chrysler? I traded my 2016 Tacoma SR5 2WD on 10-3-2020 for a 2020 Ford Ranger XLT 2020 2WD. The Tacoma had around 75,000 miles on the odometer and the trade-in value was close to $22,000. Also, I never had any problem with the crankshaft sensor issue which was recalled by Toyota on 7- 24-2017. I did not watch to the end of this video, but other issues mentioned in this video can be fixed for free at the dealerships. These issues are covered by TSBs. No pickup trucks in this world are perfect. Overall, I do like my Ranger very much, but I need to bring in to the dealership some day because it has a rough transmission shifting from start to 50mph - 60 mph. If you want to learn all problems with the 2019-2020 Ford Ranger, such as Fuel In Oi, shuddering/vibration problems with the driveline, etc..., go to www.ranger5g.com. You should make a video for the 2019-2020 Ford Ranger with all the problems.
My 2016 had the transmission hunting issue. 45 minutes at the dealer they reprogrammed the transmission never had a problem after that. Two issues I had was annoying dash rattle when it was new, the dealer fixed it under warranty. And the rear third brake light leaked, and my cab would get all wet. This was a recall.
3rd brake light seal leaking into the cab, and frame rust prohibitor treatment are also covered by recalls. I’ve had these fixed along with the blower motor
My gen 3 taco had the axle leak. It also didn't come with enough ATF fluid and damaged the transmission. It is noticeably under-geared to me on the automatics.
That blower motor had to be replaced on my 2017 Tacoma after about 18 months. The dealer did the fix at their expense. So I’m believing it was a recall.
Picking up my new 2021 tacoma access cab v6 cement color today. Hopefully it will be a good truck. Never had a toyota. Had a Chevy truck in the past for 12 years. Never any problems.

my 18 offroad definitely has the transmission issue. i thought dealer couldn't reprogram computer because of warranty issues, but ill definitely look into that
Sounds like these are mostly small, stupid things that go wrong, but cause big problems. I feel like my 2007 GMC Canyon rivals the Tacoma for reliability. After 14yrs and 113k miles, it's had no mechanical issues and leaks no fluids at all. Not even any seepage. The 3rd brake light was leaking water around 40k miles. I replaced the cheap foam gasket myself. Took 5mins and cost less than $5. A sensor related to the emissions system was replaced somewhere around 50k miles under warranty. The ignition had an electrical issue at 70k miles. I don't recall the cost out of pocket. I really can't complain. Still runs like a top and they are known to go 200k-300k miles. To sweeten the pot, I bought it as a new leftover for $12,800 out the door. SL trim with the optional 5cyl. It's proving to be a fantastic value. I'm not sure the Tacoma can even beat that kind of value.
Have a 2017 Tacoma. Have a bouncing in the vehicle between 15 mph up to 25 mph. Then once speed up it goes away. After braking then moving it happen continually at 15-25mph. Checked tires, removed two rears and had them spun and balanced .Checked brakes, cleaned out brake dust. Disconnected the ABS sensors to see if it was faulty. No leaking from the rear casing. U joint tight. Drive shaft seems ok. This is driving us crazy! ???
Owned one TACOMA was a very reliable truck never a sin gle problem, But it seems the quality has slipped, have read many articles recently about all the electrical issues of these trucks, was considering buying another Tacoma, may have to reconsider.
All of these transmission problems you talk about are with the 4 cylinder 2.7 tacoma also. I am so tired of Toyota always only concerned with their flagship Tacoma with the V6. The 4 cylinder tacoma trans shifts like garbage and is all over the place making engine run at 1600 RPM in 6th gear up slight inclines. My whole experience with my 4 cylinder has been disappointing. My 1998 grand cherokee shifts more reasonably. I know its for MPG but its worst trans I have ever had.
I'm on my 3rd blower motor on my Corolla. No biggie in getting it replaced. Plus, most of us Toyota owners are used to driving with no air circulation in the cabin, creature comforts are expendable, they take a licking and keep on ticking!
My 2017 Tacoma makes a rattling noise when accelerating as if it is low on oil. My oil levels are correct and I have no leaks of any fluids. Note that I only hear the noise when I’m running my A/C. It’s not a continuous rattle noise just accelerating when going up an incline.
I'm thinking to buy a Tacoma 2015 because they say supposed to be the best year but checking prices it cost the same 2015 equal to the 2020 every hard to make my mind
I have a 2021 Tacoma with 9,000 miles on it and I haven’t had any of these problems. I did however, have to replace the Air Conditioning Amplifier recently due to the AC not blowing cool air. The ECU threw a B1423 code but it didn’t activate the check engine light.
Experienced a rough and sudden back shift on our 2017 v6 Tacoma when slowing down to come to a stop. They did re program it but still does this on occasion. Going down a hill and making a right turn it sometimes acts like the transmission is low on fluid. Pressing the accelerator down and there is nothing and as the engine rpm increases it will suddenly take off and go. Doesn't do this every time and it is recorded at the dealer. The lag in the accelerator is pretty well always there too. RPM doesn't return to normal quickly enough after starting the engine. Stays at about 1200 rpm for a long time when cold and remains elevated on re starts after it has warmed up. Thanks for sharing the info on the Tacoma'a.
@@feustondWas in to dealer for the recommended fluid change out some time ago. When they do an oil change they do check all the fluid levels as well. I don't think the transmission is low on juice or the dealer would have shown that on the invoice. Thank you for your reply.
Can anyone might have an issue when braking that when you brake is like if you had a bad old master cilinder and shakes along you braking on the 2021 tacoma 6 cylinders. Any fix to this problem? Is it a problem or it's normal? Thanks for your help
The transmission hunting for gears or downshifting multiple gears under moderate acceleration is a common complaint. Towing anything over 1K lbs, especially on hills you'd better have the truck in ECT mode and S4 or the gear hunting gets old quick.
Just wondering why people are saying that when they take it to the dealer to have the ECU flashed, they’re still having issues. One person had his flashed three times. Can you address why this happens. Thank you.
I turned in my 2000 TRD Pre Runner with 183,000 (in great shape) on it because stupid stuff just started breaking. I got a brand new 2019 SR 5 Tacoma. What a piece O shit that was. The Infotainment center went out on day 3, couldn't start the truck. I took it back 3 times due to shifting issues ( V6 to Auto 2X4 ) it was always shifting even at a steady 65, up - down. The last straw was the fuel pump went out and left me stranded (recall now). I so miss my 2000 Dumb Me 19 years of ownership not ONE ISSUE.

2016 2.7 MT 4x4 180,000 miles . The belt tensioner pulley is starting to squeak. Drive line vibration at 40 to 50 mph. Check engine light on due to oxygen sensor. Leak at power steering line . Other than that it runs like new.
I sped off sams club one day turn to right off the parking lot and the truck was struggling like it was going to die, thank you I have an sr5 2021 v6 4x4 tacoma but besides this I was in mexico at 15000 miles and the truck started to over heat at about 35minutes at idle, has anyone had an issue like this?
My complaints, on a '16 SR5 2.7 was first the front cab mount bushings loosen and click, warranty wouldnt cover it. Very common issue. Second like all Toyota's is the dash creaks, squeaks and makes small noises from the hard plastic. The trans gear hunting is due to being geared too high. I went from OEM 4.10 gears to Nitro 4.88s and the 4 cylinder has some serious grunt now and mpg went up to 25 highway
What size tires what are rpms on hwy I’m thinking of doing same thing 4.88 gears does your truck smells like antifreeze I think is coming from coolant bottle may vent hole I have a 2020 2.7 auto
As someone who lives in South America and the warranty does not cover nothing but engine internals failure, this software and accessories fails are the worst because are the most expensive to replace and impossible to get (not even the Toyota dealer do software correction updates) 😪 I would rather have some problems on the mechanical side where I can fix it in a regular shop.
Great video. I'm in the market for a midsize truck. My first choice is a Tacoma but have read many horror stories about how bad the transmissions are. I haven't found anyone saying that the 4 cylinder ones don't have the same issue until this video. I'm going to look into that now, especially since I prefer a 4 cylinder one anyway. Thanks!
U can’t compare the 4 and 6 cyl. models. The problem isn’t the transmissions operation .. but the gearing. If u do your research ull find if you regear to 488s or 529s for extensive load off road... this will totally resolve the issue u r talking about and add a little manual spank to the auto. Gas mileage remains approx same on 488s. Good luck!
I have a 2020 TRD Offroad long-bed. I live on the east coast, so most of my driving is highway and on relatively flat roads. The transmission does just fine. You just have to be deliberate with the accelerator pedal. It's no speed demon, but it does just fine. If you plan to put big tires (33+) I would definitely consider the re-gearing also mentioned. Go test drive one! Definitely check out the V6 unless you are getting a regular cab 2wd Tacoma. I suspect the 4 cylinder will be a dog with a crew cab.
@@Buck0seven I agree! Same here from Montreal and no problems here. Just don't expect it to be a speed demon. Just drive like a normal civilzed non-douchebaggy way and it'll be fine.

2017 Tacoma v6 seems to idle fast for too long. Have occasional rough shift at low speed when slowing down or accelerating from a stop. Press on accelerator at times seems like not responding then all of a sudden it abruptly takes off. At highway speed have to crank the radio to hear it. Highway noise very loud in cab at highway speeds. Wipers where they park are not designed for freezing climate. Snow melts and freezes in that recessed area and then the wipers are frozen in.
I have a 2021 Toyota Tacoma TRD OR Automatic. If there's a vibration on accelerating from a stop in 1st gear and it goes away before shifting into 2nd gear, what might be the cause of this? I've researched this thoroughly and the only common issues are vibration at particular highway speeds but I haven't found anything with my particular problem. Please help!
On my 16 Tacoma off road My torque converter went out at 80k miles $3k invoice:( Also I did have issue with crank shaft sensor at 10k miles the truck stalled in middle of street I towed it to local toyota dealer they replaced it under warranty
I have a 2019 TRD offroad. I have not experience any of these problems. The truck is still new (20k miles), but the truck has been trouble-free so far. Transmission shifting is strange but I think it has improved over time...or maybe I got used to it.

I have an update. I had a 13 Tacoma and traded for a Tundra. Only issue with the Tundra...bad 🔋battery after 6 months. My brother in law has a 16 TRD OFF ROAD Tacoma and he says it has cost him around $7 000 CAD in repairs. It is at the dealer right now for several issues. He thinks the timing chains need replacing. He says it also surges when the steering wheel is turned....RPM increases. The roof line above the windshield is all rusted. 2 years ago he had a flat due to a bad OEM tire...so the crank mechanism broke and could not lower the spare. Lucky he had a chordless grinder. The tire iron/wrench was the wrong size for the wheel nuts. So, he is totally disappointed with his Tacoma and now is considering a RAM or FRONTIER.
Hi, I had two Tacoma’s in 2019, the first one was Sport, someone pulled me off the highway and hit a tree . The was with 620 miles. The second one was the off road when i was slowing down, it was all by itself blocking wheels. I sold at 6500 miles. Bad on brakes
I have 2016 with an issue with the ac, the ac light turn off after 3 seconds, i change relay, magnet cluch, speed censor and the amplifier control module and nothing, the computer has B1422 code and toyota dont find the error, the only piece that i dont change is the compressor itself, it possible that is the problem?
