@@BobandBrad thank you for your answer, but my issue was a minor scoliosis that has become quite pronounced with advancing age. Have lost one and a half inches in height.I benefitted greatly from the exercises you recommended for hip replacement. It went very well and the surgeon said my muscles, for my age were quite good and being normal weight helped..My husband added a second stair rail to help and I now make a point of going up the stairs two at a time most days. I avoided back surgery in case it put me into a wheelchair. Cheers, my best regards to Bob, I hope he is managing.

Great suggestions. I am almost 75 and started walking most every day for around 3/4 of a mile. I started 3 months ago after an exacerbation of stenosis and sciatica. Since I live in Florida, the summer heat does discourage regular outdoor activities but I listen to praise and worship music, walk in a park where there are lots of dogs to pet, shade and sometimes a breeze. You guys really helped me when I was at my lowest earlier in the year. Thank you.

I am in my 90’s and have an Apple iWatch. The first thing that I do at the Start my walk, is to Start “Outdoor Walk” on my Watch, it keeps track of the Distances and steps. I pick a route where there is no chance of my tripping on uneven paving. I find that I am the oldest and slowest walker on my Walk. I now walk 2 to 3 miles, 3 times a week.

I'm age 70. Severe arthritis in the left leg, moderate in the right. I used to run 5K races. No more -- too painful. That said, walking is a great substitute, along with the stationary bicycle. I've written on here previously about how at one time I gained weight. It hurt to stand, to begin to walk, to get in and out of the car. No more. Mother Nature makes a natural lubricant even for arthritic legs. I walk half mile thrice weekly to aerobics classes at a senior center. Two days a week I walk there for Zumba classes. Weekends I'm at a gym lifting weights and riding the stationary bicycle whilst listening to podcasts. I think the hosts are onto something here, healthy mind, healthy body. We are social creatures. It behooves us to interact. By the way, the pain I once had does not entirely go away, and now and then sends me a signal that despite best intentions, stuff still happens. Just so. One presses on knowing that this too, shall pass. In the meantime, a healthy life is a good life. A positive outlook does much to improve one's own world as well as that for others. What these guys say is true. Like these presentations.

I'm 68 just diagnosed last Oct. with hip arthritis, right leg. I was an avid "brisk" walker since 23yo. I like you found substitute exercises but got really bored quickly. I live fresh air and lovely scenery. Now, I use only my treadmill and walk uphill atleast 15' but at a much slower pace. It doesn't hurt probably because as the guys here pointed out, the ball of the foot is placed down 1st. Have you ever tried red/infrared light therapy pad or panels? I have no patience with pain, especially in daily activities so I dedicated myself to multiple sessions of RLT and used the pad which has varying degrees of strength. Now, I'm walking again. I rely on RLT from time to time--not everyday now. I garden, go grocery shopping--virtually pain free. I will need surgery eventually but even my Orthopedic Doc is surprised I'm not begging for any kind of pain shots or pills. You might want to look into it.

Thank you for tips and encouragement, as always! Please, Bob, Brad, and Mike - inspire people to take up Nordic Walking, devloped at s sports-university in the middle of Finland (happiest country in the world). Originally to keep up cross-country skiing habits when in summer there is no snow. On you own, in pairs, or in groups. Because the exrcise is individually variable you can do it in company of very different ability. The poles give stability and fomt top to toe training. For example: I have poles only adjusted to my height, my hubby (being a great deal more atletic than I am), he has bungy-poles with resistance in them, which give more work-out for the shoulders, back, and arms. The resistance can be adjusted up to "black belt" poles. One can also add weight west, back pack, wrist or ancle weights, so that the group can stick together and keep talking (except momentarily when HIIT). No time wasted on boring strolls for anybody. In the backpack one can pack in refillable water bottles, from which you can drink, or water flowers on the way, to adjust the weight. 🙂

Loved this info and your encouragement. I walk daily..at 5:15am because it gets so hot after 6am. I am racing against myself..getting my speed up and now average 135-140 steps per minute and I walk for 45-55 minutes, depending on my route. I used to average 7500+steps a day till my daughter got me an Apple Watch 8 months ago. Now I work daily to keep up my goals and average 11500+ steps a day and stand more too. After eating ANYTHING (snacks included) I make myself walk for 2-3 minutes..it’s all games to increase my steps and motion. Watching tv, any commercial is a stand and march. I also practice getting on the floor, laying flat and then back to stand several times. Now doing 2-3 days a week with weights and bands, as there is no gym near me. You are so right about consistency… in 8 months I have only missed 2 days of 10k steps..(they were 8k steps and I had a good excuse🤪) I feel AMAZING..and with some exercise I learned, my knee pain is gone and I feel so great. Zero meds, 77 year old .. I work at this with diet and consistent movement. Thanks for excellent videos that keep me informed.

Top reason for me--spinal arthritis with so much pain, it's nearly impossible to walk more than 50 feet without having to stop. I used to walk five miles a day every day, but once I suffered a huge injury that destroyed my right rotator cuff and fractured my right hip, as well as damaged my spine, that ended the long walks, and now I walk "distance" in stores while holding onto a shopping cart. Not about to tip over a 200 pound cart, so I feel a lot safer, and all the store managers around here have given me permission to walk as much as I want to without having to shop.

I've just passed 85 & 210lbs... so I'm chubby. I used to walk 2-3 km daily until I had a major operation 5 years ago. I stopped during recovery and have never begun again. WHY? One major reason is SKIN IRRITATION. The slightest exertion makes me perspire profusely which leads to all kinds of irritation, fungal infections and time consuming showering and changing of clothing. In other words... a PAIN. I use all sorts of absorbent powders and fungal creams to keep the gremlins at bay. A far more effective solution is NOT TO SWEAT in the first place. I know, I know... excuses, excuses, excuses... but the issues are REAL. Just getting dressed and undressed, including donning compression stockings, as well as hoping I don't meet my maker by slipping in the shower saps most of the potential pleasure out of "going for a walk." I'd love to hear your motivational speech on this one.
@BobandBrad
@BobandBrad 23 дня назад
The issues you speak about are real, that's for sure. We know these issues can really make it hard to stay in shape. We also know you can do anything you set your mind to. You don't even need to necessarily lose weight, as yes, of course this would help in making things easier. Even if you just strengthened your muscles, you could do more than you currently are and the harder things might become a little easier. It''s hard work to get there, but it's worth it. Wow! I realized when I saw this that I had dreamt of doing "back attitudes" (your glut exercise) similar to what we did in my dream at the ballet barre. (I was a pro dancer in my 20's. Now I'm 71 and quite lazy physically due to my joint discomfort plus interests in which I follow mental pursuits in a seated position. My energy levels are pretty low, too, due to tired kidneys.) Anyway. I did the glut and abductor exercises, and what a relief I experienced in my hip and knee joints! Thank you both so much! Blessings! 🙏💗

I love to walk, but rarely do for long periods anymore. Basically shopping, walking my pups in yard and to/from dog park... no more long several mile walks in the state park... knee pain (bone on bone and had meniscus surgery in 2019). I want to walk the pups, but they aggravate my knee by pulling erractically either together or in different directions depending on what SQUIRREL!!! or other animal/person they see...(I have a Y-leash to keep them from tangling me in the leash as much). I do use a cane (inherited from my late broher of the same height), but I have to use it in my right hand (bad right knee) because 1) it is more comfortable on my knee most of the time to push on the cane on the right side and 2) I have to keep the leash in my less arthritic left hand. Note that my pups are a 14 pound 8 year old and a 18 pound 6 year old full brother and sister, both are chihuaussies (the 6 year old is in my icon picture at the left of my comment). The leash is a normal heavy duty leash, that at the end is tied to a 1000 pound rated swivel and connected via a link to the middle of a 10 foot chain (rated over 400 pounds) and each doggie's collar is connected via a link and military style locking carbiner... The 6 year old likes to chew (thus a chain) and the 8 year old keeps breaking swivels, links and chains (and rretractable leashes designed for doggoes over100 pounds).... Thus each time a chain or swivel breaks, I go to the next heavier strength.... as I cannot keep replacing them every several months... and losing Luke for over an hour while he runs around chasing cars, cats, squirrels, geese at full speed is unnerving... and painful to my knees... needless to say, he is used to racing big dogs along the fence in the dog park... and he is only JUST starting to lose more often... now it is a 50/50 thing rather than a 90/10 Luke advantage.

I started wearing barefoot sneakers (wide toebox and zero drop) in my 60s and love them - no more back pain or bunion issues. But let me make a recommendation: start off slowly! The salesperson in the store told me to just wear them for a half hour at first and I didn’t want to believe her. Wore them for a few hours and could barely walk the next day due to sore calves. Other muscles are engaged with these shoes. You don’t want to overdo it at the beginning. Now, 3 years later, these are pretty much the only shoes I wear 😉
