And you talk a lot more of the care, which is also very appreciated! Corn snake owner here! Both of my corns are in 40s right now and I’d like to say- I completely agree with you. My baby corn utilizes all of his space, he’s extremely active, and he loves his enclosure- same with my adult. He’s exactly 5 feet as of his last shed, and I fully intend to upgrade him to a 75- he utilizes all of his space and a 40 just feels cramped to him. I would fully agree that a 75 is better for a corn. Loved the video!

I had 3 collard lizards living together for 10+ years in a 40 gallon. Lived together no problem other than one occasion where a tail got mistook for a cricket. Handling was not actually too bad as enjoyed being held and spending time seeing us come into the room but if you have space, watching them run is amazing as run on there back legs. Male was very impressive for size whilst females may have been abit duller but all had tons of personality and definitely recommended

If you want to know how many gallons a tank is just use LxWxH/231 so the standard 36x18x16 40 gallon breeder is 44.9 gallons. If you get the petsmart/petco brand which is 36x18x17 is marketed as a 40 gallon breeder but is 47.7 gallons. That extra inch makes a difference.

What i heard about from a breeder/general reptile expert in my area a few years back is that rosy boas make excellent pets for all the reasons you mentioned...unless you're unfortunate enough to get one that wasn't handled regularly as a young hatchling. He said they're pretty dumb even by snake standards (but he meant that with love) and they're hard to teach new tricks. He was volunteering at a reptile rescue (which admittedly went defunct about a year later, presumably because he left or got fired and nobody else knew what they were doing, but I digress) that had an absolutely gorgeous bay of LA rosy boa with one unfortunate flaw - that thing was convinced all humans were food. It had a gorgeous temperament outside of that, but that was kind of a deal breaker for someone who specifically wanted a pet that wouldn't bite. I believe he got adopted eventually by someone probably more qualified to care for a snake with *ahem*...behavioral issues, but yeah. That thing went HARD on his handler's hand and nearly got me because I was letting it sniff me. So don't rely on older individuals to not bite, and definitely don't leave it in a cage for a few months and expect it to behave well. They're not mean snakes AT ALL, they are just...kind of dumb. They're one of those species where food bin training could be beneficial, in my unprofessional opinion (I know food bin training is a controversial subject, but snakes who aren't anxious or easily stressed shouldn't regurgitate after being asked to slither from one bin into their cage. At worst, just dont rush them, but I've never had any problems with my corn snakes)

One thing to keep in mind is that corns vary a ton in size. The record was something like 6 1/2 feet long and that’s definitely to big for a 40g. But some stay very small. For example mine is nearly 9 years old and is only about 3 1/2 feet long. Little guy. So it’s case by case.
@nightinggale6470
@nightinggale6470 Год назад
A 4x2x2’ enclosure is still a good minimum for corns, even smaller ones. They’re very active and will use every inch of space given to them. The enclosure should be at least as long as the snake. They also generally get 4ft or larger, they rarely stay below 4ft.
@matthewgosz8900
@matthewgosz8900 Год назад
But sometimes they don’t get over 4. Like I said it’s case by case. Mine hasn’t grown in a couple years and I’ve even met people who had corns top out at 3 ft. Majority corns need a good 75 gal at least. But some can do a 40.
@nightinggale6470
@nightinggale6470 Год назад
@@matthewgosz8900 assuming you’re keeping your corn in a 40, I hope you consider upgrading, he’d benefit from more space. 40 gallons are 3ft long, so your corn is longer than the enclosure. Even smaller corns are very active and will use every inch of space provided. You can check secondhand sites for cheap used tanks, that’s how I got my 4.5x2x2’ for $200.
@matthewgosz8900
@matthewgosz8900 Год назад
I don’t have space for it. A lot of rules in this hobby are relative. If he breaks the “the length of the tank rule” by 6 inches he’ll be fine. Of course there are some rules you don’t break (like putting a snake in a 10. That would be cruel) but some are more flexible. Even in the video the guy states it’s his personal opinion. However my personal opinion is smaller (key word is smaller) corns will do just fine in a 40. Just like mine has for the past 9 years. (I also keep it bio active which adds a lot of enrichment).

You're hilarious and I really like your videos. Is there any way that you could make closed captioning available? I don't know if that's up to you or the platform, but it would make it possible to watch your videos effectively while not having access to speakers

I agree on the bearded dragon. I bought an exoterra for my first beardie and realized he was outgrowing it. built him a nice 4x2x2 and we're both much happier

I totally agree with the bearded dragon thing, (not like I don’t agree with anything else) when I got my beardie got him a 10 gallon- first lizard, mug mistake, Mushu grew fast, we quickly got a 40 gallon and he’s about a year old and still in it, for the past like 4 months I’ve been looking for a 120 gallon, I started building one in school then the unit ended and it was thrown out, but my teacher told me he’d cut the peices for a home project and my brother in law is gonna weld one together as a late birthday gift, just in case one or the other goes wrong. But yeah, if you want a beardie you gotta prepare yourself for a tank cause upgrading can be a pain in the butt

Can confirm, African house snakes are absolutely fantastic pets. There are a couple different species and localities out there, such as cape house snake, black house snake, Tanzanian house snakes, etc., and all of them are beautiful. I have a cape house snake and she's been an absolute dream to care for.

Would you recommend the same for a 30 gallon wide square aquarium tank also? One with more a more spacious surface unlike a more narrow wide 30 gallon? Or would you have any different suggestions? I was sold a 30 gal that was leaking horribly and I don't want it to go to waste so I'm stuck on what I can do with it. Thanks!!

My corn snake is perfectly happy in her 40 gallon breeder!!! (She’s also 9 months old and still eating Fuzzy mice. She’s tiny) We will see as she grows. I also have a ball in a 20g L. But she’s a hatchling... after Christmas I’m thinking of getting her a huge like Christmas tree storage tub or wrapping paper tub to move her into. I had no reptiles February 2020 and now I have 2 🤣 the addiction is real.

Great list as usual! I've definitely had African house snakes on my list for a while. Disagree with collared lizards though - they're small, but very active. I don't think I'd feel comfortable putting one in less than a 4x2. But then I haven't had one in a long time ago, and I certainly wasn't doing it right then, so maybe I'm wrong hahah. I wonder if chuckwallas or uromastyx couldn't be done, though? Someone with more experience would have to weigh in on that. Excited to see if a 4x2 video is next....

Love these videos! Gives us all a chance to get ideas on new animals. I have a question for everyone. I have an old aquarium in the garage. If I remember right is 46× 48× 12. Would I be able to comfortably house a Rosy Boa in it, or will the 12in deep tank not be wide enough even though the snake would have length and height to make up for it?

Funnily enough this is kinda the same process that ended up in me getting into rosies. I had a 36x18x18 exoterra that was going unused after my lacerta died (bought him from a shady person of a facebook group and he was in poor health when i received him). So I had the tank just sitting around and started doing research on snakes cause I've decided I need something that needs a little less frequent care, and was tired of trying to breed unsect feeders in my closet. (smelly) Found Sand Boas through clints page and was gonna go that direction until I found rosies on a local shops website while looking for those guys. As cute and derpy as sand boas are, there is something amazing about rosies, especially because I'm from california and they are a native species here. The amount of variation in diff localities is crazy, you can find them in all kinds of color schemes and variation in the strirping pattern.

You must have the marathon wrigglers of corn snakes! I have only kept them (as far as snakes go), and I will admit they can move at good speed if you leave them alone. Compared to so many lizards, though, corn snakes are so slow. Mine are slow and chill, but every time you bring up "fast corn snakes," I can't help looking at my lazy derps. Me: "Why aren't you ladies fast?" My corn snake girls: *not moving* My male skink: *zooooom!*

Gods I love Rosy Boas. Most people don't understand how ABSOLUTELY UNDERRATED these sweeties are! I'm getting myself a big girl soon! They are definitely more expensive than a fair amount of BP, Redtail and Corn morphs. Be ready to fork up at least $200 USD for them at minimum if you're on the east coast of North America. Also I feel like Leachianus should have larger enclosures than a 40g. They move A LOT and need a lot of enrichment too. GigaGecks are great, but be prepared for a tiny and more opinionated cold blooded cat.
