Historia Gruffud vab Kenan reveals that, king Gruffudd born and raised in Dublin. descendant of Amlaíb Cúarán, that on several occasions Gruffudd availed himself of Norse-Gaelic military assistance , there was a remarkable increase in Norse-Gaelic predatory raids upon Wales throughout the 1070s and 1080s. big shock or suprise, not at all,.... grufudd just like murtagh o brien his maternal cousin, had many strugles to be high king, also at least 5 rival princes and other kingdoms... his alley was prince rhys ap tewdar: ancestor to the fitzgeralds of kildare, gruffudd was later captured by norman earl hugh of chester in 1081, during this period from 1071 * the norman invasion of ireland was underway... gruffudd escaped to dublin, later king magnus III barefoot was instrumental in the naval battle of anglesy to smash the norman advance futher into north wales, isle of man and grufudd returned.. it was the competion of the 8 to 10 rival kings, princes and their dynasties.. that led to norman advance into wales,,,, that by 1071 the south east of wales was 58 % controlled by the normans..., Battle of Ewloe (also known as the Battle of Coleshill.. July 1157 between a large army led by Henry II of England * also Prince of powys ( mid wales) and an army led by the Welsh prince . Owain ap Gruffudd ( 1100 - 1170) the victory of owain a descendant of brian boru, against his rivals and the king of england, owain was declared KING OF ALL OF WALES, prince of the welsh, rex brittonum... the true king of the britons... owain death led to total complete chaos in wales..., no other rex brittonum, or king of the british was ever declared.... the many princes fought each other as much as anglo-normans...
Great overview on a period about which we knew so little. Who even heard of the Battle of Athenry? From the Fury of the Burkes Lord deliver us? Anything to do with Enoch?
@@mmhthree : the chronicle of the princes or in welsh, brut tywysogion, says in the maternal line.. king rhys ap tewdar, & argwlydd or Lord rhys his grandson... during norman occupation of the marchers of wales.. lord rhys, known as prince of south wales... daughter was the ancestor of the royal tudor dynasty.. also that the high king, or chief of the gaels... brian boru...is the ancestor to king of gwynedd Cynan ap owain, owain ap gwyynedd, llewellyn the great etc... Llewellyn the great, daughter married , the ear or moremaer of mar... eventually on second marriage to bruce dynasty.... so that king edward bruce , who ruled in ireland... had a welsh grandmother... lord high steward of alba,..the ancestor of the stuart dynasty... marriage to majorie bruce, then isabella of mar... then king robert III stuart.. even more complicated is, that Prince LLewellyn the great, married many wives, just one was siwan or joan plantagenet , the natural or illegitmate daughter of king jon.. and great grandaughter of henry II .... also the marcher dynasty de clares, orginally norman, with a branch in ireland, county clare, were prominent in *marcher lordship of glamorgan*, somewhere in the ancestry , marshal etc brian boru turns up on 3 different lines..., aoife of leinster, macmorugh..., and the viking kings of dublin...
My Great Grandfather, patrick Lehee was from County Cork and came through Ellis Island a long time ago, first settling in Philadelphia then Ashland, Kentucky.
Fascinating! I'm very interested in the O'Neill clan as my family "spoken history" has a direct relationship to the O'Neill's - in fact to Lady O'Neill after they accepted English rule. Skeletons in the closet my father called it as he related the story to me some years back. We left County Antrim in the mid 1950 for the antipodes; you can take the boy out of Ireland but Ireland remains in the Man.
We were a very powerful Sept pf the o neills the o Neil's were nothing but a bunch of greedy scum who took a pat on the head off the brits ,the o Neills turned down helping other family's septs and clans fight the brits . The o Neills cost Ireland it's sovereignty for 800 years
How wonderful. My great grandmother Elizabeth Fitzgerald married Maurice Byrne from Wicklow. Farmers via Milltown and builders via Ranelagh. Good lineage.
My grandfather was james Edward Desmond from Cork,he came to America in 1916 . Family oral history states he was a descendant of the desmong Fitzgerald geraldines that lost title and were executed after the Desmond rebellions ( hence, his names in their honor.) Strange to think that this line, related to the Twdyrs through marriage to Nest, were deposed by their cousin, Elizabeth 1. In research of the family tree, there is seemingly endless history and events, as well as relations through blood and marriage to so many people of title and importance as offshoots of the bloodline....one branch even touches the Stuart royalty of Scotland, there was a prospective archbishop of Canterbury , knights, dukes, earls, ..it seems quite endless.
Im descended from the Fitzgerald/ desmonds, the direct line that lost title... My grandfather was james Edward Desmond from Cork... (Notice his names? ) ive never gotten along with anyone named Butler, evidently the A- hole genes in that bloodline are directly passed down to today! 😂
Almost all my ancestry is from Ireland with a smidge of Scottish and English…Patrick OConnor on my dads side came from County Cavan, mother side Conroy came form Galway area, the other sir names going back to 5 generations OConnor/Conroy Calan/Malone/Hart/McClusky/Murtha/Haney/Campbell/Baker/Kane/Roberts/Marren/Feely/Milton/Gallagher/Morris/ Armstrong/Austen/ Milton

My understanding is that McMurrough went to get Norman help after Tiernan O’Rourke attacked him to get his wife Dearbhla back…. Who had been kidnapped by McMurrough….
Sooooooo much in-fighting, wars, suffering, love, seething hate, beauty and heart...in such a geographically small island. I dont see how anyone can find this shit any less than mindblowing.

I just found your channel and subscribed. My 12th great grandfather was Gerald Fitzgerald ( the wizard earl). Look forward to binge watching the channel. So much interesting videos to see!
I've noticed, that much like the senior Butler & Fitzgerald lines, many of the O'Neills & O'Briens converted to the Church of Ireland, presumably to hang on to their wealth, titles, & land.
A lot more families converted than that. Louis Cullen demonstrated that, once you control for conversions, "Catholic" landownership didn't decline as significantly as assumed in the post-plantation period.
FitzGerald and FitzMaurice, are descended from Maurice FitzGerald a Norman chap, companion of Strongbow, there is still a guy living today called Maurice FitzGerald thinks he is the Duke of Leinster, a place that is a republic, Butuiller the same. By Henry VIII's time everything had to be anglicised, he ran a surrender and regrant policy, the first Baron of upper Ossory, Barnaby Fitzpatrick, was born Brían Mac Giolla Phádraig that mans family goes quite far back, the second Baron of Osraige Barnaby Fitzpatrick, was taken away as a child and educated at the court of Henry VIII grew up with Edward VI. There wasn't much choice in a lot of matters.
@@TheJpf79 You should check out the genealogical research on Barnaby's lineage -while it was previously assumed that the family wasn't "Norman" in origin, Y-DNA analysis has disrupted this narrative -the earliest Irish ancestor for this line dates no earlier than the 13th Century and then points to an English or Frankish origin. Claims of descent from the "Mac Giolla Padraig" clan are most likely bogus.
Should have explicitly pointed out, that 'DE BURGH' eventually was anglicised down to the more common version of 'B(O)URKE' ! 👌👍 P.S. Chris de Burgh was born Christopher John Davison,he took the 'De Burgh' surname from his mother's family,as through her,he became the eventual heir of one of most senior landed branches of the family.
One of the English (Norman) barons at Runnymede, who pressured King John into signing the Magna Carta was named Baron de Burgh. Interestingly (to me at least), John's son, Henry III, had to later sign a revised Magna Carta that gave the nobility more rights. Other than that, about all I know about the Magna Carta is where it was signed - at the bottom. ;{D
Read a magazine years ago entitled "Ireland's Own" gave an estimated figure of the millions of people whose surname is Burke (Bourke etc) around the world. Burgh, a fortified place. Burgh Castle in Norfolk. Part of the same Norman family. My maiden N. is Burke. Ancestors probably tenant farmers or workers at best on the land. Just because our surname is King. Lord, Abbot or Duke means probably they worked the land of the landowner. Lord is Anglo-Saxon, a corruption of Hlafward, keeper of the loaves; ie Head of Household responsible for family and his retainers. Lady is similarly derived from Hlafgivu, giver of the loaves. Mistress of the Household.
I’m an O’Connell, and the story from our family is that they used to be dukes. Idk how true that is. Would be cool to hear the history, seeing as Daniel O’Connell is so highly regarded in Ireland today.
I'm not even surprised to see the Fitzgeralds at the top, but I am surprised to know the O'Neill's began to spread over to own parts of Scotland, truly learn so much, great video!

We are MacNamaras, builders of Bunratty Castle. When we visited it a few years ago, we entered the Throne Room and I had my brother take the throne-ceremonially taking it back from the O’Briens. I have photographic evidence! Ceremonial sword in the background! 😂
How could you forget the O'Reilleys? The "Life of Reilley" is a life of extravagant wealth and comfort. (By Irish standards,) Furthermore, it is said that O'Reilley even minted his own money. (Though none of it has been found.)
Can you talk about the Ó Fáolain family I've done a little bit of research but can't find much, I know they where Kings at some point, and then the family split into different factions.
Curious about the Lennon name. My research tells that many ancestors were scribes for the church, but that research was long before internet, and was hard to find.
Lennon was the local Chieftain in the area south of Dun Laoghaire. Killiney/ Cill Inion Lenin (The Church of the Daughters of Lennon) is 5 century AD ruined Abbey and graveyard on Marino Avenue East close to Killiney DART Station.
Robert the Bruce is my 21st great grandfather. Elizabeth de Burgh is my 21st great grandmother. My Fitzgerald line starts (when going from present back) with Katherine Fitzgerald my 14th great grandmother, married into the MacCarthy family..her grandmother was Mary de Burgh. My Irish lines always meet…including sometimes with my Scottish lines.
Interesting that English Invasion started 1534 With conquest final complete under Cromwell 1648 . (Norman's Were mixture of Normans French and other from Belgium and other Mericanarys .
I was disappointed by the sight of "O'Brien" in old English font, and two tone lions on the shield. Gold lions a red shield were our symbol long before Richard the Lion hearted. In 1543 Murrough O'Brien, King of Thomond submitted to Henry VIII at Greenwich and returned to Ireland as Earl of Thomond. His grant of Arms required gold and silver lions.
There are De Burgh's buried in Newcastle Church in Pen y bont ( Bridgend) South Wales, along with the De Breos Family, De Breos by the way is the Bruce family who were not Normans they come from the Brythonic Family Brewys and were earlier Kings of Caereddynt and Rheged before leaving their home after the Scot and Saxon Viking invasion of what is now Scotland, they arrived back in Britain from Brittany with the Normans in 1066 in Brittany their name was Breoc, it is also a fact that Robert the Bruce was of the same Family as the Tydyr ( Tudor) and the yst Arth ( Stuart) later Kings of England the Tudors and Stuarts, these were Cymric Families, who were Anglicised, Fitzgeralds by the way are Norman and the Fitz are Burgundians. Much of my Family History has been involved with Celtic History of both Ireland and Britain, my father was a big War Time friend and of Blair " Paddy "Mayne, having served with him in North Africa before being sent to the Balkans as an SOE operative till 1944, he met up again with him for a while after the War. Great man. Personally, it is difficult to work the real truth about History of Britain and Ireland, because English Norman and later Tudor History in Ireland as in Britain was written by them in their " Own Words and ways" being a fluent speaker of Cymric in modern and its ancient form, which has had no influence by other languages apart from certain Latin words after the Romans, I can say that the History of Ireland is cruel, but it was also the same in what is now Wales, we had Wars with Saxons that kept them out of the West of Britain, for Four Hundred Years , later the Normans came with Bretons, the English always say they landed at Hastings, but they also landed a Breton Army at Penfro ( Pembroke) with the De Breos, De Clare , De Bohun and other Breton Knights to build a Army of Cymric forces that they did and they came from the West to secure the lands of Mercia and Dorset . This was a false hope for the Kings of the British, they got rid of one problem and secured a much worse problem in many ways. For William the Conqueror was also of Breton heritage being a Plant a Genet ( Children of the Gent) they forgot their Celtic Heritage , with them being much more violent in their ways and suppressed all the peoples of Britain and the same they would do in Ireland with all its later Terrible consequences, the English Establishment are now in retreat in Britain, the useless Tories are hopefully going to be Decimated. I am hoping to live long enough that the Cymru like our Scottish friends will have independence again from this Establishment of Monarchy, I am no Monarchist, be rid of them, I say, also Ireland must be re united it is Ireland and you like us have a long and proud Celtic History,. It is not easy for me with an Irish wife and Children who live in the North and South to talk about this from Britain, but I for one, would love to see a re united Ireland with Peace. Diolch yn fawr i ti Prynhawn da pob hwyl !
William the Conqueror was not a Plantagenet. His granddaughter Mathilda's 2nd husband, Geoffrey, Count of Anjou, started the Plantagenet dynasty, followed by Geoffrey & Mathilda's son, King Henry II of England. The Plantagenet dynasty is also referred to as the Angevin dynasty (from Anjou). Richard III was the last Plantagenet to sit on the throne. King Henry VII started the Tudor dynasty, he being descended from the Lancastrian Plantagenets through a bastard line.
My male Irish emigrant ancestors were Peter Butler, Michael Lacey, ? Redmond, John Isaac Nicholl (Nickell), Daniel Perry, Joseph Perry, ? Charlton, ? Storey, & James McKay McKissick. So mostly Hiberno-Norman, Anglo-Irish, & Galloglass.
My gran was a Burke from Tuam apparently is was a fairly common name to the area her family where part of the ballyglunin burkes not sure is that a descendent of any of the burke ancestors or not, her mother was a Hogan that is not a common name to county Galway apparently though.
Is there aconnection between the Fitzgeralds and the Merovingians in Europe and the 13 Black Nobility families in Northern Italy? I think you might find it worth checking into this.
Incorrect. The Burke family has over 72 confirmed FTDNA BigY 700 confirmed matching DNA Kits, the singer de Burgh is not from the same family. Any male Burke of any spelling that tests can confirm their place on our ( Block Tree) DNA Family Tree and locate their branch.
Why not do a show on the Irish office of C-Arb? Miler Mcgrath advised QE i to make the Irish switch to the English form of prperty ownershuip. This would make his family, as might co-arb, vbecome wealthy.
What about the Stickapopple clan, they were the top clan in Oireland, they settled in zWest Offaly, and even learned to speak a garbled patois called bog irish, lovely hurlers too,Dinny Stickapopple won three all Irelands,he was a son of the great Lord Sir Dickie Duckie Stickapopple Admiral of the Fleet on the Shannon

Modern day, the O'Donnells would be the wealthiest. Their successor is a Spanish Duke and successor to that successor could either be an Austrian count or Spanish marquis, or Duke at the time of his death
The O'Neill family has to be at number one. By far the most influential Irish family of them all. Came so close to driving the English from our lands forever in the battle of Kinsale.
@stuart5107, They made a disasterous bolloc#s of the whole thing. The English army were trapped and couldn't last. O'Neill listened to O'Donnell and attacked. But such is life, as Ned Kelly said, with the rope around his neck in far away Australia.
It was a very hard one and if it went outside of the medieval era, 100%. Like look at Killkenny castle. But before there fall the Burke's where doing super well going in to the 1300s. That's my view. Love hearing what others think.
@Kizzmypixel2023 my granda was Irish McKenna, from Co.Monaghan, didn’t know they were part of the O’Brien’s. Heard they helped Tyrone with fighting? Just did my dna 95% Irish, rest from GB, Scandinavia and Finland. Vikings prob.
Interesting i don't see de Clare so Strong Bow was not powerful? de Clare family was in Ireland and the name Clare is linked to some of these people from Normandy.
I think you should have approached this video more scientifically like ToldinStone would, estimating wealth more on revenue, land and trade and trying to convert to today's terms. The presence of the O'Connors makes one wonder if this is more about political success in the high kingship era than anything else.
