Love these! I think my top five would be learning how to work with fabrics, learn homemade cleaners, learn basic preserving with salt and sugar, learn your own seasonings, and learn HOW TO LEARN from others

I would love for Jen to do a video on how to clean herbs. Especially mullein. We have that stuff everywhere. But it’s so dirty. Being the only one on our farm that is physically able to work, I have learned to do it all myself as best I can. The one thing you should add to your list is learning how to run a chainsaw. It has benefited me so much. I’m a 65 yo caregiver, mom, daughter. Your list is SO important!

I can do it all except drive a stick shift but I know how . I volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and learned how to build a home. That's a great way to meet people and build your community.

I told my teens that they either have to BE handy, MARRY handy, or be able to AFFORD handy 😂 Between my husband and I, we can get those jobs done (though a friend helped with the first part of breaking down the large carcass)

I taught myself how to crochet clothing so i know what is touching my skin for the most part. My husband does all of the other things. I do build, garden, make tinctures, salves. Learned how to can over the ladt few years. I would say learning yarn arts, basket making, and self protection are pretty important. Love the ideas! One other side note...maybe Jen could help us learn how to make hair care????

We moved into a tiny home. Just the shell, except for some electric wiring, a heating and air unit, and an electric box. Lived in it while working on it. Wouldn't suggest living in it while working on it. It just wasn't possible to do that, for us. We learned much from this experience. We have worked for 7 months on this. It's getting there, but it is still not finished. Money, time, and learning curve has definitely slowed us down. We will get there in the end.

These are great ideas. Both me & my husband grew up helping our dads butcher & cut up out meat when we were young. It's been many years, but we still could do it. My husband can operate & drive anything, we can also build things. I have learned a lot about herbs, foraging & gardening above what my mom did. We should be ok❤

I agree that people should have these skills. But I have one for you that most people don't know, and that is to do your own maintenance on a vehicle. My father taught me its cheaper to do it yourself then to depend on someone screwing it up worse or lying to you just to make more money. Keep up the awesome videos.

Tandem trailers are much easier to back than a single axle trailer.

All good here, except that backing that trailer up lol. helped build additions, a little electrical, ran pvc water lines, conduit, cleaned and skinned squirrel, rabbit, etc, turkey (feathers all over my kitchen lol) drove equipment. May have been a while but you never forget.

I have a hard time backing up my car much less a trailer. I do know how to drive a stick shift but I am getting ready to have a complete knee replacement so won't even be able to drive for the force able future. I am prepping so I don't kneed to go places for the next several months.

This reminds me of the YT channel "Dad how do I" I'm a girl and my dad taught me lots but I love this ep so much!!!!! I need a Zach, how do I homestead to drive a trailer..how do I wire an outlet..how do I lift a bale of hay..how do I clip chicken wings so they don't fly...how do I do all the things!!!!...this was so good!!!!! Yeah, I know how but there's so much I don't!!

I want to build my own chicken coop this year. With all used material. Nothing fancy, just functional and big enough to be able to grow my flock. Chicken math is real.

My hubby has always worked on things, so we taught our children the same way. I think our son can backup any kind of trailer no problem. We bought a fixer upper and so I daughter just learned how to do drywall in her closet. A little funny story about the chicken coop my hubby built at our old house. He didn't think we would like having chickens so he built the coop with thinking he would up with a shed. We loved the chickens so we had a great coop. Then we had him build us another part that we called the chicken palace. It was just so the chickens could get into a contained area without anything having them for lunch or dinner when we were not at home. We had to leave that chicken coop at the old house but we will be making a new one this year. Can't wait I miss having chickens. Great video!

You need to add some things to your list, basic sewing skills, basic canning, how to dry food without electricity & how to cook on an open flame/fire pit heck I doubt there’s very many people that know how to build a fire correctly, hunting, fishing, how to clean fish. Teach them basic survival skills. Do a basic cooking class start with how to fry an egg etc.

I think everyone should grow a garden. Even if it is just a couple tomatoes in pots, and better if you can grow some things from seeds. Most people who live in apartments can do that much :)

In my regional community, people became better after C. Polite words, offering to help by carrying or holding doors, sharing info, more friendly. Maybe we all appreciate each other more.

I would add medical training. How to mend a deep wound. How to properly use a tourniquet, etc. Take a class for CPR if you do not know how, get certified.

I'm so glad that I have these skill sets down pat. We raise meat rabbits, and I can get one from alive to unalive and in the tub to soak in under 7 minutes. We're going to start our breeding program this weekend. The goal this year is to raise and butcher 50-75 rabbits. In addition, we partner with a local farmer for beef and pork. I have set aside a 30x50 area to start my medical garden. I have a few plants already in the gardens, but I did order from survival gardens the medical garden seeds. Each year I try to learn a new thing. This year is to learn to crochet. I can sew, I can quilt, I can knit, but crochet....oh boy! I'm also learning patience in a whole new way, LOL. So sad. It used to be that practically everyone would smile and say g’day. Not anymore.

Trailers are funny it’s the polar opposite of driving instinct.lol. Boat trailer and a Volvo stick shift is how I leaned and hope it’s like riding a bike cause it’s been ummm too many years. Practice does make perfect. ✌🏻🙏🏼❤️

A couple of things I might add/offer for consideration. You might not have a larger trailer and it's not in your budget for awhile, but you have a riding lawn mower and a 2 wheel garden cart, you can still learn, and learn well. You can see the behaviors of the trailer up close as you make adjustments in steering and learn what to do. Another thing, don't assume that just because you can back a gooseneck, that you can also back a regular trailer. They are two different beasts, with a gooseneck being a little easier to get the hang of, usually. Most important, you have to be able to SEE the trailer, whether it be the wheels, the front or the cargo, you have to know how it's behaving behind you. Get something you can plant in all 4 corners, flags, pieces of pipe, whatever will show in the rear window of your vehicle. Use the mirrors, but use the back glass more.

One thing that sounds trivial but isn't is fermentation skills. You dont need to live on a farm to do this. Fermentation leads to vinegar for pickles or making vanilla flavoring or fabric softener or cleaning products or distilling for alcohol to make stronger tinctures. Think how many things you can replace with things you grow if you can't find or afford them in the store. Companies; l'll not name any names; with access to cheap or free labor are selling their products in America for pennies on the dollar, forcing American companies out of business. When our country has no companies to buy from, those pennies on the dollar companies can raise their prices and charge us ANYTHING THEY WANT TO and WE WILL PAY IT or GO WITHOUT!

Working on herbals. I can do the rest. Ps. Insurance is starting to make decisions on meds they pay for & amount (hospice patient was declined the dose of 1 pain med as ordered by Dr. The Dr called them & demanded it to be covered as he prescribed it).

Ah hah hah hah!! Big machinery and backing up a trailer!!😅😂😅 I laughed so hard when you said that and wholeheartedly agree with that whole section of your video! Encourage a dual axel trailer as well as they always have a much smoother driving experience! Chalk me down to 129,000 miles on a red dual axel trailer pulled by a Ford Aerostar. Dual axels are the Cadillac of trailers! The rest of this video as well 👍as well but this is definitely the biggest in my book!!

One story that I tell people that happened during the covid lock down says it all for me about the importance of learning how to do and make for yourself. I was standing in line at our local CVS drug store pharmacy; dutifully 6' apart, with my fake mask on since I can't breath through the others. A couple people were ahead of me. A lady was arguing with the pharmacist. She was yelling and in tears, obviously very upset. I though a prescription she really needed must be out of stock. She was throwing her arms around and yelling 'But I HAVE to have it! I can't make it without it! I can't find it anywhere! What am I going to do?! The pharmacist kept apologizing, they didn't know when they would get any in, but never offered any alternatives so I assumed it wasn't replaceable. The lady finally gave up and ran past us, sobbing, tears dripping off her chin. I went up and asked the pharmacist what she needed; maybe I or someone I knew had a few we could spare. You know what it was. Benadryl cream! She had a chronic itch that about drove her crazy and kept herself covered in Benadryl cream. My mouth fell open. I looked around, but she was gone. I could have given her something as good or better than Benadryl and taught her how to make it. It broke my heart.

Oh boy. I am going to learn to back a trailer. Promise. Make friends with my neighbors. My apothecary is stocked.

Next time you need to build something offer it as a class, so others learn at least the basics. You get what you wanted and made a little money.

I think I could probably figure out how to put together a basic box on my own (a rough box), but when it comes to more intricate stuff like plumbing, electric, proper building techniques, etc...how does a Knoxville chic find someone to teach her without charging an arm and a leg. It seems everybody want to charge for their thoughts these days. Ain't nobody willing to just help. I have only butchered a rabbit before. (And, yes, I had to pay to learn that skill😢). Money don't grow on tree round here.
