The most important attribute you need in trucking is LUCK. Without it you will not survive. I remember being asked to observe a new driver, we called them green drivers, for a mate of mine who had half dozen 4 wheeler trucks, just to check him out, as you know the insurance gets a hammering until new drivers have some history and time served experience. Anyway, I did the driving to get most of the deliveries done and in North Wales I handed the truck over around Conwy as he'd only needed to drive down the A5 back to the Midlands. I happened to notice his reluctance to make progress and noticing his legs were literally shaking and he was sweating profusely. I asked if he was OK and he seemed reluctant to admit he was petrified. I told him to pull over as the A5 was notorious for narrowing and winding and its not really a good idea for a scared driver to be on, I took over otherwise we'd still be there 10 years later. Anyway I advised my mate against hiring him and he understood, there really wasn't room to train such people up as finances were tight. The green driver understood and I don't think he continued to drive afterwards. Without good confidence your putting people's lives in danger let alone risk the company going out of business. I don't mind others having a go, but there are people out there who are definitely NOT suitable for the job irrespective they may have passed something called a TEST. In hindsight, I got over my nerves during the two weeks training course which I payed for myself but as one who is also scared of heights, I was really amazed that I even managed to climb the 16 foot up on top of a load of steelwork or veneers. But I did it. Stretch yourself but don't go over your limits when there's always a more suitable job option even in driving. I've known too many people who have made life changing mistakes, even done serious time in jail just for a complacent attitude to safety, don't take chances.

Here's a skill, Learn to ignore other drivers doing bad things,and never get involved in an argument. Must also learn to take being treated like a dog wherever you go. Learn also to love 15 hour days and no life.

"Shit or bust" confidence is installed into me having driven removal vans for 30+ years, one job in chislehurst I was driving a 37 foot pantech up this bendy driveway into some retirement home and it was rubbing on three points all the way up against the wooden fence wall, when I got to the top into the compound one of the rubbers on the side of the body peeled off! - Me and my porter got it back on again though! Driving back down was better for some reason - no rubber strip tp peel off on the offside - but no scratches!

I've been driving a mixture. Probably 50/50 of Class2 and Class1 for 20 years. I'm in fuel currently delivering mostly to garage forecourts. Long days are guaranteed at some point and reversing does come after experience. Car drivers please give trucks more space and respect. Keep on Trucking :)

I don’t think patience is a skill, almost anyone can be patient. From the perspective of someone who passed recently and has been driving for 2 weeks, Spatial awareness is a skill you must have or quickly develop, adaptability, you will face into fresh challenges daily so accept and face into positively, attention to detail, there is a lot to learn so make sure you take in all,you learn and learn from drivers around you. I will speak to drivers parked near me to seek device, hints and tips. This requires communication and people skills, master these and you will always find someone to help you. Good luck

Oh believe me it takes a certain kind of person to put up with the numptys on the road patience is definitely important and not everyone possess it.
@michaelchaplin866
@michaelchaplin866 Год назад
How is it different to learn "spatial awareness" and to learn "patience" Not everyone has the ability to be patient and therefore one can learn to be patient just as one can learn spatial awareness. So why is one a skill and the other not?

I've got my practical training coming up at the end of June, I currently work in security (have done for 10 years) but I'm fed up of the shit pay for long hours and constantly having someone breathing down my neck. I'll be honest I'm a bit nervous about changing careers but I think I'm making the right decision, especially since I'm unhappy in the security industry besides I'm used to long hours (currently work 12 hour shifts) and I have no family of my own so that's a bonus, I'm mostly alone in my job on the site doing mobile patrol and I honestly prefer my own company anyways (I can be a big of a mardy bastard at times), confidence comes when I need it to so I can tell people no when necessary but the others I think will come with time and experience on the job. Thanks for the videos and tips 👍

Biggest thing I've found is to stop giving a fuck. Traffic happens? It happens. Some dickhead on the weighbridge gives you attitude? It happens. Kamikaze deliveroo moped almost kills himself cutting inside of you? It'd be justice, but you know what I mean. If you get your bollox in a knot every time something less than ideal happens you won't have to worry about renewing your CPC because you'll have died of a heart attack long before. My biggest bit of advice would be don't make yourself suffer for "good" money. I took a 14k pay cut but achieved an awesome work life balance with a 4 on 4 off shift and a much better company culture where you aren't treated like shit. Chase job satisfaction, not money.
