Hi guys I have just passed my class 1 after doing class 2 work for the last five years. I've been looking where to start on class 1 ? And containers have been mentioned as one of the best ways to get experience & straight forward work while I'm getting used to a driving a truck & trailer. I'd like any opinions/suggestions or even your thoughts/ experience on container work plz 😃
@fatbloketravels
@fatbloketravels Год назад
@@leeberry1363 it's straight forward up to a point! No strapping or loading but there are some tight assed places to get into sometimes. Your reversing skills will certainly improve! Go for it!

Hi Raul, I started my training this week; I've watched quite a few of your videos in spare moments and found them very informative. This latest video was great because you're giving pros and cons on the different type of HGV work available. Love your channel. Cheers

I recently went back on the lorry after a little break of roughly 20 years 😂. Used to do multi drops with a ridgid + trailer and now on class 1 container tramping. What should I say? I can absolutely recommend this and especially since wages went up significantly it’s a joy. Easy job, mostly nice colleagues ( by that I mean all drivers) and I haven’t been sweating at work 😂🤣 The only thing I can wish for are better facilities for hgv drivers. Motorway services are particularly bad in providing acceptable toilets and showers beside they’re the most expensive ones. Oh, and staying overnight near a container terminal needs some ear plugs 😉 Other than that it’s a good job and I can only say “If you wanna do tramping container tramping is the way forward”. For everyone who wants to start driving you have to be aware that it’s a quite lonely job but I do appreciate not having too many social interactions 😂

As someone that does a little bit of short film making I’ll say what’s setting you apart here from other vloggers is noticed you’re adding cutaways, inserts and “b roll” (although I hate that term 😂). It looks really good. Some nice composition and shallow depth of field stuff. I’d keep plugging away with that dude. You’ve an artistic eye for it.

The Monday after I passed my Class 1 (Mid 1980's) I was put on Tilt's out of Purfleet. Scared me to death as very different from light training vehicles! Was then doing containers for a while out of Tilbury. Very easy work, sometimes helped unload for a bit of cash in hand but usually just sat in cab twiddling my thumbs. This was in the days before DVD's, Smartphones & Laptops to pass the time. In the drivers canteen in Tilbury what was noticeable was the amount of older overweight drivers! Have to say that, of all trailers, Tilt's are the devils work, hated them!
@mishafrog8786

tilts are the worst in high winds, you have the cutain flipped over to one side for loading the a sudden gust gets under it and the lot is on the floor , Lol ! happy days.
@haggis087
@haggis087 2 года назад
@@mishafrog8786 For sure! I used to get regular reloads in various steel works in South Wales. They made us push the Tilt cover all the way forward and knock out the roof bars before entering the sheds. After loading they forced us to reverse out and reconstruct trailers in the open which was usually in a windy and wet open yard! I also lost my complete cover over the front of my cab and spent an unpleasant/ exhausting 5 hours being drenched and still couldn’t fit the cover to the way it was previously! Never again thank God!

What should've said about the Container's the Crap side of them (Ie) How they can tip over because of the weight inside the Container's going round a corner or Roundabouts too fast and going over on you're side see it all the time because you don't know what's inside or how it's packed or the Trailer won't Slide from 40' with a 20' Box on too the back axle and get it on too the loading bay and vice versa back to 40' because the pins won't go in or out and it's a big Hammer job also the locking pins making sure they are all open or the Crane will lift you and your trailer up off the floor or putting one on because the lock has moved even a couple of millimetres the Container is sitting on 3 locks bar one then you piss off the Crane driver to. Come back and lift it again And hurrying to. Get back on a Friday only to find your stuck in a Stack 😭😭 that's the down side but I loved it I don't know if you have covered it as I've just seen you're Video

@TrshOnCrack
@TrshOnCrack 2 года назад
What’s the point in worrying, I realised that after doing assessments straight after passing class 1 myself. First one I was worried for no apparent reason, and like expected it was a shocker, trailer going all over the place. The way I looked at it though, technically the assessment is like getting an 1hrs lesson for free, you do both drive, and reverse, things can only get better. I went to my second assessment with a blue chip company a month ago, absolutely smashed it, they offered me a full time contract after that. Main thing is be honest with them, even if you do manage to reverse it first time, tell them you just passed your test and ask if they are able to train you up, any reputable company would offer you at least a days training helping the shunters out or something along these lines. The company I got the contract with offered me 2 weeks training to get me up to speed after I have told them I’m a newly qualified driver, first 3 days helping the shunters which was a really good thing for reversing, the rest of the days going to stores with a trainer. Now I’m on my own and it’s going great. I can honestly say after a month, I’m much more confident reversing, don’t get me wrong I still require a shunt or two but I always manage to get it on the bay without smashing into anything which is all that matters, whenever you can avoid blind side reversing, that will come in time, don’t expect to do it straight away, it’s difficult. There is NOTHING wrong with going out and having a look, also don’t be afraid to shunt on your assessment, I believe they allow you around 5 or 6 shunts. I’d rather look an idiot running around and Having a look than go through all the hassle after smashing into something and turning out to be a bigger idiot than before just because I didn’t bother to go out and look.

Yes i believe that’s correct. I think you’ll find it’s the build quality that sets them apart.The Volvo and Scanias always keep their resale value much better.plus the ishift in the Volvo was a pleasure to drive.Talking about gear boxes the Mercedes used to be the worst of the lot,you would be waiting to pull up out at a roundabout,see your gap put your foot on the throttle and F-all would happen there was such a time delay it was unbelievable.Saying that they did have a great/large cab on them. I have just retired after 22 years on containers and don’t miss it in the slightest, i was fed up with being treated like dirt,especially through this pandemic.So stick at it lads and take them for every penny you can get

Australia uses 5,000,000 tonne of jet fuel every year between Sydney and Melbourne and we have been talking about high speed rail for years but it would be uneconomical at present. If nations could cooperate to build a standard Japanese guideway to take ISO carriages and overnight container trains, daytime fares would be cheaper than planes due to the containers going overnight 8 hours faster than trucks and earning $2,000 per container.

Sydney to Melbourne would definitely be economically viable. I don't know who did that assessment, but considering the amount of air travellers between both cities, and their sheer size, a decent high speed rail line makes sense. You could have a single stop in Canberra on the way and still connect both cities in under 4 hours. Sure, it will cost a few billion to set up, but Qantas alone makes over 1,2 billion per year from flights between Sydney and Melbourne. Let's break down the cost: Spain built the High speed line between Barcelona and Madrid for around 2 billion euros, and that line does 621 km in 2,5 hours. (a similar distance to Melbourne-Canberra) Sure that was back in 2008, so add in inflation and the fact that this would be Australia's first high speed rail project, and you might get to pay almost double, or something like 5-6 bn Australian dollars for that big stretch, and probably about half that to plonk in some high speed rail between Canberra and Sydney. The most expensive bit will probably be around the cities. Canberra doesn't have a through station, so you would probably need to tunnel underneath, or viaduct over parts of it, so add a billion or two for a few tunnels. In Sydney and Melbourne, existing tracks can be used, or tracks can be added to existing railway corridors to get the high speed trains to the city centre, at least initially. You can start by building Sydney to Canberra, by spending about 2-3 bn Australian $ on that, the train will easily be faster than the plane on such a short route (if you add time to/from the airport, security checks, check-in, taxiing etc), even if you 'only' build a 250 km/h line. You can build Canberra-Melbourne a few years later, with higher design speeds (300-350 km/h). If we look at comparable lines in Europe and Asia, there is no way Sydney-Canberra-Melbourne does not run a healthy profit, paying for it's own build cost in a decade or so. If you think my build price estimates are low, I would advise the Australian government to ask the Spanish how they build their high speed railways. Now, maybe the trains are too expensive. Not really. Trains, even high speed ones, are cheaper to buy and maintain than aeroplanes. 1 tgv duplex (500 seats) = less than 30 million euros list price, 1 Airbus A330-300 (440 seats) = over 230 million euros list price. (and that's not even the neo version) But the train takes longer, so you need to pay the same amount of crew for longer. Well, the turn-around time for an aeroplane is longer than that of a train, and you really only need two people, three tops, to run a high speed train, while even a Boeing 737 will have 5-6 (2 pilots & 3-4 cabin crew), but even if you have 5-6 crew members, they're likely going to be paid a bit less, and also electricity is likely to be cheaper than jet fuel. (as long as your government doesn't subsidise jet fuel to an outrageous degree, and you don't produce your electricity by burning said jet fuel) Maintenance on the high speed tracks should be around 240 million euros / year based on french data, if you build about 800 kms of high speed line, which is optimistic, this is quite manageable. It's not much higher than the running cost of sydney airport which costs about 200 million euros to run. (based on global average running cost per passenger) Long story short, you don't even need freight traffic to make a new Sydney-Melbourne railway line viable, and if you're smart about it, like the Spanish, you can probably build it for under 10 billion AUS. Building the high speed line to be able to handle freight by night will actually be significantly more expensive and/or come with a lower top speed. (closer to 200 than 300 km/h) This is partly because high speed trains can handle steeper hills than slower, heavier, freight trains, and partly because the banking of the track in curves is speed-dependent for a given radius. You could always plan ahead for a freight line to be added in parallel to the high speed line later on, with some detours to deal with hills etc, and some shortcuts as well.

@@mariusdufour9186 While I agree that it would be economically viable I disagree about high maintenance HSR and believe we need no maintenance 700 km/h Japanese maglev to beat trucks by 8 hours. Stage one Parrahub to Canberra could be done in a single 14m,11 psi tunnel in five years using 20 Chinese hard rock TBM for $20b
@mariusdufour9186
@mariusdufour9186 2 года назад
@@edwardbarnett6571 And here I was demonstrating how hsr is actually affordable to build... and you're proposing a plan for maglev trains that involves building a 14 mile long tunnel for twice what it would cost to build an entire Melbourne-Sydney HSR (ca. 550-560 miles). Sure, it would be nice to have, but considering every Australian government thus far has found that building regular HSR was going to be too expensive, I doubt you'll find much political support for maglevs. Japan is building maglev between Tokyo and Osaka, and it can justify this by the simple fact that it's HSR between those two cities is running at max capacity and it is still not meeting demand. All Australia has is a train that does Melbourne-Sydney once or twice a day, in about 11 hours. 10-15 bn $ will cut the travel time by at least 70%, a 100-200 bn $ maglev will cut the travel time by about 90%. I would also like to note that while Maglev track itself is indeed very low maintenance, the many tunnels and viaducts (even more of them than with HSR) do need to be maintained to a very high standard. (probably even higher than with HSR) So the savings on maintenance are likely smaller than one would imagine.

@@mariusdufour9186 The 14 meter diameter tunnel would be 200 kilometres long at $20b for five years mate.
@mariusdufour9186
@mariusdufour9186 2 года назад
@@edwardbarnett6571 Why would you need 14m diameter for maglev? Your train is about 3m wide, so 6 m + 1m in the middle and 1m on each side: 9m diameter. Hard rock is the cheapest material to dig tunnels through, if you have to dig through limestone, let alone even more problematic substrates, your tunneling costs skyrocket because you have to pump out water and shore up the sides and top of the tunnel while you're digging it lest it all just collapses on top of you. (If you want examples look at the new rail tunnel in Stuttgart, or parts of the new Gotthard base tunnel). Gotthard base tunnel cost about 15 bn AUD for 57km of single-track tunnel. So how much of that hypothetical 200km tunnel will be dug through hard rock? The tunnel has to be arrow-straight so you can't have it wiggle it's way through more favourable geological layers like you would for a conventional road or rail tunnel. Japan's 500km maglev line will cost at least 80bn, and Sydney and Melbourne are further apart than Tokyo and Osaka. So yes, I highly doubt your 200km tunnel can be built for 20bn (which is why I assumed you meant 14 miles of tunnel not 200km, which would make your estimate on the high side but not outrageously so), and I highly doubt a Sydney-Melbourne maglev line can be built for under 100 bn, though I would love to be proven wrong, as that would mean we could start building many more maglev lines across the world.

I’ve been driving Class 1 since 1980 and I have to disagree with you, I would not recommend containers for new drivers. Over 70 per cent of truck rollovers involve container vehicles, it’s takes experience to pull a 30 ton 20ft box on U.K. roads and do it safely. I also noticed your trailer was set for a 45ft container and not the 40ft that was on it. If your a lazy person and like doing nothing it maybe the job for you, however you will properly find you are on a daily or weekly wage so when you sit for 6 hours waiting to load/ unload it’s your time(unpaid) you’re still be expected to complete your days work so you end up doing a 15/16 hour day for your 10 hours pay. NEW DRIVERS ENJOY.

How they came up with £10/HR? Because all the hauliers offer you £10/HR. Unless you are with an agency, where it is 12, 14, £15/HR or more. I find agencies give you work if you want it, whereas hauliers can give you day work or night work but what I have heard is that apart from driving hours they also make you use 15 hour days, and 6 days a week to a point where you don't have a life it's just start work at 4am and often work 12 plus hours a day, enough time to go home, eat, go to bed and up again for the 4 am start, which sounds bleak. Thank heavens for working time directive which will provide you with weekly breaks.
