Okay I live in the rust belt (upper Illinois) and ive owned two 2nd gens. The first was a 1995 with the 5.9 magnum, and the other is a 2001 with the 24v. ON NIETHER OF MY TRUCKS NOR ANY OTHER 2nd Gen ive seen up here, has EVER has a bad frame. Sure, theres some rusty ass ones. But never close to "falling apart" I have NO idea where your getting that from. "theyre just KNOWN for falling apart" buddy, where?

I would replace the rusting frame issue (common to any vehicle in the rust belt) with the stock, Gen 2 steering issues, but everything else is spot on. We have a ‘94 Auto and an ‘01 6-speed, quad cab in the family. Both long beds and 4x4. 172K and 411K miles, respectively. Love them both, but would really like a P-pump on the ‘01. Finally, eliminated oil leaks on the ‘01 with a speedy sleeve and seal on the crank nose, a Keating machine tappet cover, a Cummins vacuum pump reseal kit and a Red Head steering box. Good bye automatic rust proofing and kitty litter on the shop floor. The ‘01 also has Gen 3, 14” brakes (17” wheels), Gen 4, T-style tie rod, adjustable track bar, Borgesen high volume power steering pump, Thuren front springs and EMF ball joints. It stops, steers and tracks like a new truck. The ‘94 (bought new) has a built 47RH, the KDP fix, fuel plate, slightly bigger injectors and one ton rear wheel cylinders. Almost stock, but good light duty, daily driver, with better brakes and “gitty up” better than stock. Many more fixes and improvements on both. Great trucks, both clean and easy to maintain compared to PS or DM powered trucks.

@blindy9897

53 blocks also effect some 12 valves. KDP on both 5.9's and even the 4BT is also something to worry about. I daily a 53 block 24v with a 47re and I've had no problems. I've also only got 176K on the truck but so far absolutely no issues.

I've got a 99 Cummins 53 block 243000 miles. No crack yet. It's my understanding not all 99 Cummins 53 blocks were bad. In fact there's a ton of people who claim they have a 53 block and soup it to high hell and no issues.

Don't get me wrong I'm a fan of Dodge as much as I am Ford and Chevy but from my experiences it seems that to an extent, the outsourced drivetrain is the only good part of the truck. not hating on Dodge, I've got a lot I can complain about from all three brands lol

I used to think all the dodge was, was a shipping crate for the cummins and would yank them out first chance I got. Now with emissions they way they are in some states I am getting to learn how to do some restoration work cause that may be my only option later down the road. IT SUCKS!! the for bodies are so much better.

Some of the design is decent, like the way the hood is held up, and ease of access of engine components for repairs.
@TheFreeStateOfO

They switched to the "semi" body style in 94' and became one of the most highest grossing production trucks of all time. It was the look. The "Twister" truck. Dodge with those smooth rounded lines has always made the best looking truck. Numerous truck of the year awards. I think it was more looks than anything.

tbh ive been a chevy guy all my life. Never was interested in fords except for the 7.3 powerstroke but i know they are good just like any brand. Worked on plenty of chevys, just recently got an 03 dodge ram 2500 cummins and ive got to say nothing about it is cheap compared to any of the chevy's i had. if anything the chevys felt cheaper. Front ends i guess do wear out but my truck has 330,000kms and the previous owner didnt do any front end work for 80,000kms and i doubt it had any recently when he got it. I replaced some u joints and balljoints in the front end because they were in dire need but i know my chevys well and they are no saint when it comes to falling apart around the engine lol. Chevys need balljoints, wheel bearings, steering boxes and tie rods all the time as well. everything drivetrain related aside from the engine is original on my truck, transfer case, diffs and even the transmission so im told. knock on wood

I have a furniture business and have owned probably 20 Dodge ram Cummins. The 12 valve Cummins are indestructible. No computer controlled this, no electronic that, just basic, easy to work on, and u get a 5 speed and you can depend on them day in and day out, never a problem. 17 mpg with a 25000 pound trailer. Had a Ford 7.3 and was dependable but got 5 mpg. When u drive them all day every day that mpg gets expensive fast. The 94-97 12 valve 5 speed is the best all around truck ever made, period

It's a 6 speed so it's a great truck, only 290k miles too. I plan to eventually get a laramie longhorn ram 2500 4 door because eventually kids happen, but I ain't ever getting rid of my 2000.

all these 2nd gens are 20 plus years old. unless you have a super deep wallet you're not going to be able to afford one that doesn't need fixing, unless you get an extremely good deal/find. these trucks are timeless in my opinion love um or hate them they are sweet trucks. my advice if you desire one of these trucks especially a 24 valve you are going to have to spend a few dollars fixing the weak points but honestly after tackling a few issues you will have a great running truck take care of it they will last for hundreds of thousands of miles! my 24 valve has 300k miles completely stock besides a dual disk clutch, fass lift pump and a couple new components zero blow by, no leaks. just stay away from the 53 blocks especially if you are planning adding more powa.

Might be worth getting a fuel pressure gauge to monitor the stock pump. My understanding they don't just go out they get weak over time and starve the vp44 without the driver even knowing because there's no symptoms. When I first got my truck it had a stock Carter lift pump on the engine pushing 12 PSI. I replaced it with ddrp not fass, Lil pump I found on eBay. How to rewire the connection polarity but it works just like a fass play pushing 20 psi. Only cost me $100 on eBay.

@@LOUDNPROUD I've been here for a while. I mean, I'm not a huge fan of Nasty Reds wheel/tire setup either. I think lost is side wall is a lot better than rubber band tires

@@nathan1sixteen Do you have been around a while that you know that we have done lots of wheel and tire set ups that are less rim and more tire But it’s been a while since we did a wide set up. We have to do styles for more than just one type of person.🤷🏼‍♂️

@@LOUDNPROUD oh, I know. I was specifically talking about these 2 trucks. I mean, I remember when you got your first (?) OBS Ford, and it had REALLY Big wheel and SUPER thin tires, and you swapped them out for a more reasonable set

Stop hanging the goofy rims outside the wheel well !! It's the worst thing ever - like running low profies on a 4x4 w/ no sidewall !?!? What is that !?!? Ridiculous !! Yes, i'm judging you -

Great info and excellent video. However, those rims and skinny tires have ruined that truck man. Nothing about that looks rugged or manly! You have created a pavement pounder that's all show and no coal! Those wheels look awful! My gosh quit trying to make every truck a Baja truck from Commie-Fornia son! If you want to upgrade the rims convert that to a 10 lug and put some 22" Alcos on there with 35's! Do this after lifting it 6"! Here ended the lesson! Blow coal!
