Very good tips. I’m not cute when I’m gardening but I’m protected from sun and bugs. Long sleeves and pants/socks/shoes are a must. Add in a hat and sunscreen and I’m ready to go ✔️ I like to buy oversized mens dress shirts from the thrift store-those cotton, loose-fitting clothes make a big difference and allow for air flow. A nice thing about being totally covered is that your skin doesn’t get dirty, the clothes take it all 👍

Yesterday, I summoned my courage and did some gardening in the heat. Pulled tulip foliage, weeds and planted 5 Bubble Gum petunias in the hottest time of day. It's just a strip along the public sidewalk, but I was out there for hours. Got a compliment from a pedestrian. That always makes my efforts worth it even though I'm embarrassed because all I see are the flaws/weeds. Rain this morning and in 70s. I should garden anyway because it'll be 🔥🔥🔥🥵 the rest of the week. Speaking of hot, your cottage garden is on fire! Love that 'Primal Scream' daylily. Thanks for the mini garden tour.

Spot on gardening tips for gardening in our summer heat. Vanity goes out the window while working outside in this heat, trying to stay hydrated and safe from the rays of the sun is what matters. I often use my cooling towel around my neck to stay cooler, wetting it whenever it dries. Helps a lot! Beautiful garden, Jenny!

Jenny and Jerry, the gardens surrounding your home are absolutely gorgeous! I noticed a hummingbird behind you at one point in this video. I love seeing those beautiful little birds. I plant lots of flowers that attract them to my garden. I was wondering if either of you has used a cooling towel while working outside during the summer? If you haven't, trust me when I say they have been a real lifesaver for me. To activate the cooling aspect of the towel, you get it thoroughly wet, then wring out the excess water, and snap the towel in the air (like you're shaking a rug outside). It feels cool to the touch after that ...until it starts to dry out, then just reactivate it. I fold it once or twice (the long way) and place it around my neck. I wonder if any of your followers use one of these? I've had heat stroke several times, and I don't ever want to go through that again. Have a happy and safe summer! ~Margie🌞💚

I'm very sensitive to heat, so once it's above about 75 I am dripping with sweat. I try to plan out my projects to follow the shade in my garden and avoid direct sun to the extent possible. Every time I pause I try to remember to drink some water -- you don't want to get to the point where you are dehydrated. Thanks for reminding everyone to take precautions.

Excellent video and great suggestions. I garden near Winston-Salem NC. It has been very hot, humid and with little breeze. In my 70s and learned a long time ago to work before the sun come up or in the evening. I always have a half gallon container with ice and water nearby. Thank goodness for my large brimmed hat. I follow all the other tips you provided except for one...taking regular breaks. Once i start working i loose track of time. So from now on i will do as you say. I will plan what i can work on for 10 minutes, stop, get in the shade, rehydrate, take off my hat and cool down. Then i will repeat this for a couple hours then go inside and shower with cool water. I find if i work till i am about to drop it is no fun. It is also dangerous as i can more easily loose my balance or trip...these are the last things i want to do. If i suddenly get too hot i take off my hat and run water from the hose over my head, arms and legs. That really makes a huge difference. I can then rest a bit then get my tools and go inside. Better be safe than sorry. Thanks for your videos. Susan

Wow! Thanks for the hanging basket tub advice. I love hanging baskets. I would water and fertilize religiously. They would still be wilty and eventually die. Western Oregon isn't known for heat..but it doesn't rain in July and August. Add 80 or up to 100 degrees and it becomes death to my baskets. Again, thank you.
