What's the only thing better than a happy ending? And what's the only thing better than a sad ending? An over-the-top disastrous ending that comes out of nowhere!
This is a list for the five films with the biggest last second failures from the good guys' part. Movies that seem on their way to a typically pleasant conclusion and up and decide that making you suffer is more fun. Movies that, out of the blue, woke up and chose violence. Films that pick you up at your place, talk some fascinating conversation, pay for dinner, take you back to their romantic penthouse, make you feel like the world's most special star, understand precisely how you want to be touched, make you finally realize what love and pleasure are all about, then stab you in the eye.

The mist!!! Not the most artistic film but definitely one of the most devastating in its final moments

Stephen King is on record saying he likes it better than his own ending from the book. Can't get higher praise than that.

Ahhh! Great example! Nice one. I was just too gut punched by that ending, even to cry! I remember catching myself with my jaw dropped, literally. That’s never happened to me before. The plotting was a bit iffy and the script was patchy, with moments of sparkle, but each and every performance was so committed that I was hooked 100% and did NOT see that end coming. Really good call there. 👍

I was expecting The Mist to be one of these five.

One of the most gut punch ending of all time is 1982's The Last American Virgin. It is actually now known for its surprisingly downbeat ending. Most of the movie is a teen comedy about three guys trying to lose their virginity. The three is the "nice guy" main character, the overweight friend, and a good looking but jerk guy. The nice guy falls for a good looking new girl, who is smitten with his good looking friend. He is in love with her but she ignores him. But then his good looking friend knocks her up and then cruelly dumps her because she is pregnant. So the nice guy sells all his possessions and his savings from being a pizza delivery guy and takes her, and pays, for an abortion. He also spend the weekend nursing her back to health. He tells her he loves her and she seems to reciprocate, with a kiss. He thinks he found true love and buys her I think like a necklace or something. She invites him to I think her 18th birthday party and he is flying high, but when he gets there he finds her making out with the good looking jerk, who took her back once he learned she got rid of the baby. He leaves devastated and the movie ends with him driving home alone crying. A feel good movie for the ages.

SPL was awesome. Good to see it recognised. Also I loved the fact that there was almost no dialogue for the last half hour of the film. Sammo is magical.

Not sure it qualifies bc it's not at the VERY end but the elevator scene in The Departed is certainly a shock and the impact it has certainly makes the movie better for it.

I am really enjoying these videos, from a writer’s perspective. I hope your popularity grows as it will be well deserved. You follow the Three Laws of Video Essay Writing, which I just made up in my head, largely stealing them from the BBC’s remit: Educate, Entertain and Inform: can’t ask for more. But we do get more, because you’re Funny too. That’s just a bonus. Thanks and good luck growing your audience. I have a feeling there’s a large appetite out there for this type of well informed art criticism. Side note: In A Most Wanted Man, Rachel McAdams with blonde hair and a German accent was, without exaggeration, the sexiest thing I’ve ever seen in any movie, even though there was not one moment of sexuality in her entire performance. Just wanted to mention that.

Great topic. Other unnecessary tragic endings - that aren't even needed for the plot - are surely Electra Glide in Blue (probably my favourite ending of all time); Ring of Bright Water (beheading innocent pets); and the UK-version ending to Silver Dream Racer (which is a terrible movie but the left-field ending certainly gives it something extra). Great video - thanks

Jean De Florette and Manon Des Sources has one of the most bleak endings in a film. I guess it would be catgerised as a tragedy, but what a depressing experience.

I had the best time early this year watching Once upon a time in the West, then The Dollars Trilogy, even told myself "So in Western I can expect the "good" guy will always win, right?" and then of course I stumbled on the roll to Unforgiven and The Great Silence and for a few days after I couldn't decide how I should feel. 😆 Still, the BEST time, and one of those times I wish I could see those movies for the first time again

Yeah, I hate these kind of films. There were a number of horror films that did this and no, I don’t watch films just to feel depressed at the end, life is depressing enough, why would I go to watch a movie that was just as depressing as real life? They’re lame!

I know it's a popular movie but I always feel the ending of The Great Silence is a cheat because the villain doesn't beat the hero through superior cunning or effort or whatever. The hero simply walks into an obvious trap, as if he's expecting Klaus Kinski (!!!) to fight fair, and then goes down like a dumbass. It would be like if Sergio Leone had Clint show up for the gunfight and get gunned down except *big twist* he didn't bother packing a steel plate under his clothes first. He's just dead! Because he's dumb! I don't mind a downbeat ending, but it has to be earned as much as a euphoric happy ending does.

In one of my favourite films, the good guy dies at the end (quite unusual in a fictional story) but, what is really unusual is that the bad guy survives. Can anyone name the film, or find another with such an outcome?!

SO GLAD you mentioned The Bedford Incident, an almost forgotten flick that deserves a bit more recognition, IMHO. One thing that I've noticed about the flick: If Ben Munceford, the commie symp journalist (Poiter's character), had never been on the ship, the nuclear [nu-ku-lar?] ending would not have happened. If the flick is trying to make Poiter's character a heroic one, it fails: His presence only causes dissension and confusion on the ship--asking lots of stupid questions and stirring up shit that wouldn't have been allowed under standard operating procedures, eventually leading to BLAMMO. (But I don't think James B. Harris was a good director actually; I would describe his style as "cloddish"--but I do like his films [like I like Mickey Spillane's writing: pure psycho pulp--have you seen Harris' Cop? INSANE], but it's hard for me to think that Munceford being the "bad guy" was part of his intention, especially considering the times, as well as Poiter and Widmark's [Widmark's company produced the film] political leanings at the time--I honestly think their intention was to make Capt. Finlander the "bad" guy, an Ahab type. Of course, they also probably thought that communism wasn't THAT bad....
