Hiya. Quick question. I have heard that garter snakes are generally communal. Are other snakes similar? Cornsnakes? Milksnakes? Ribbon snake? Some I'm missing? I'm rather snake ignorant to be honest, and only started looking into this when I found a garter on a hike the other day.

I'm one of those sub-par followers that doesn't really watch the travel videos. Nothing against them, I just can't get into them. I use RU-vid to learn to provide better care for my pets and to learn about new ones but my focus is very much on the 'pet' aspect as opposed to seeing someone find one in the wild type video. If it compensates at all I watch your other videos repeatedly when narrowing down my next reptile. Your pros and cons comments are really insightful even when you're clowning around.

I got back into reptiles a few years back and leachies are what reignited my passion. Super unique and you can't help but be impressed by the size. The one thing that I think they have going for them over crested geckos is that they aren't as jumpy, at least mine isn't. She's jumped about one inch from one hand to the other about 3 times and that's it. Whenever I handle crested geckos, I'm always watching for the signs that they're about to try to take flight. Other than that, every point you brought up is accurate. I don't think my girl understands that it's even possible to poop anywhere else than the front glass. And the smell is... pungent. They also take a lot of work to socialize. I have worked with my leachie daily for years to get her to be comfortable with handling. Now she's amazing, but bites are still not out of the realm of possibility. I also wonder if other leachie keepers have experienced this, but I have the reptile equivalent of a one-man-dog. Mine is super chill with me, but if she so much as sees another human being, she freaks out. I tried to show her off to my father-in-law one time, and she showed off a skill I didn't know she had of spraying a diarrhea-like crap all over my arm. I don't think he was impressed. Last thing, from my experience and from info I've gleaned from other leachie keepers, they can be really hit or miss with taking insect feeders. My girl flat out refuses to take them. I splurge a bit on Leapin' Leachies powder which is higher in protein to make up for it. But know that your leachie just may not go for it.
@ianviviTV
@ianviviTV Год назад
I got just my first leachianus gecko and I agree with you. She is just a baby but super easy to handle. Not as jumpy as my crested gecko. Only *barks* when she's bothered. I tried feeding her crickets the other day but she would not take them. I try to handle her everyday to get her used to it and not be a grumpy gecko. I love leachianus, they are my favorite reptile.

Cornsnakes for the win! Okay, so when I was first getting into reptiles and I asked reptile groups on fb what a good beginner species would be, everyone said ball python or cornsnake. Well I didn't want a basic snake that everyone and their brother had. So got a bullsnake instead. They're like cornsnakes with keeled scales that get twice as big with 5x the sass. But eventually I changed my tune and now I'm breeding cornsnakes. 😅 They are personable, easy to take care of. They rarely go off food, if ever. And there's TONS of morphs in all sorts of patterns and colors. Another bad beginner snake in my opinion, sunbeam snakes. The iridescence might be gorgeous. But they spend like 90% of their time in the mud, and stress easily from handling. So you basically have a tub of mud that you feed a mouse to every now and then.

I've had an experienced keeper tell me not to get a corn snake because they're boring. Are they though, because of all common 'beginner' snakes in the hobby, corn snakes are the most beautiful. I could easily get even a normal corn snake a large display enclosure, just because they're so beautiful.
@nataliesreptiles
@nataliesreptiles Год назад
@@squirrelmurderous most of them are. I have 1 that is an absolutely firecracker. I have 3 that are completely chill. And 2 that are in between. 1 is flighty in his enclosure til you get him out, and my 2 Kankakees give a little huff, but then calm down usually.

@@nataliesreptilesany of them do the thing where they get so angry and try to hiss so loud that they do a pig like snort instead? I find it oddly adorable when it happens, and usually they’re super angry over just the enclosure being opened or some other minor thing

A few years ago, I didn't have the space for anything larger than a tarantula, but I liked reptiles too. One day I saw a video of a leachianus gecko, and immediately I fell in love. Those wrinkles, chunky body, and goofy face were so cute. They looked so endearingly awkward when they jumped. Nothing could compare. I knew if I was ever able to get a reptile, that would be the one. It took a lot of time and preparation, but last year I was finally able to buy a leachie as my first reptile. I absolutely love him. He's actually been pretty easy to care for. I know they often get crankier as they grow, but so far he's a sweetheart. (I have tarantulas, so I'm used to pets that don't like me lol.) I have a camera set up to watch his antics while I'm not around, and he's very silly. He likes to drink from his water dish while upside down. I've been working on his adult enclosure and can't wait until it's ready for him to move in. Absolutely no regrets here. Would I recommend other people get a leachianus gecko? Probably not. They're expensive, large, and their temperaments vary. I agree that a crested or gargoyle gecko is better for most people. But if your heart is set on a leachie, then they're totally worth it.

My vet loves her and says he would take her to schools for those days he does that sort of thing. But he doesn't get my baby for that. She's too precious. Man corn snakes get such a bad rap. I think that you have put together a great list! From personal experience, I would also advise beginners against buying Ornate/Nile monitors. They’re cute when they’re small, and fairly manageable to house, but as they get bigger, their huge size combined with their aggressive temperament can be quite a challenge. Plan to spend a lot of time with them on a regular basis, in order to build trust.

They are fine if they are stressed in a new environment.. it’s when they settle and their confidence comes out, they have a pretty narly bite too 😅.. one thing I did find with mine that if it was nighttime and he was out in his cage he was usually ok with being handled and would sit on my knee or shoulder for about 30 before wanting to head home .. if it was daytime and he was in his cork bark he was pretty defensive and would want to nail me 😅.. that’s just mine tho so I guess like all things there’s variations to this

Hey there! Long comment here that I don't know if you'll have the time to read and respond, but I would really appreciate it. I just finished watching the video and I have questions specifically about tegus that I would like to hear your thoughts on. I understand and appreciate you pointing out the challenges associated with owning a tegu as a beginner reptile owner. I recognize your point that tegus have specific care requirements that may not be suitable for newcomers, such as their size and complexity. Having researched and learned about tegus for over a year now, I've developed a strong interest in them. I learned about a variant called blue tegu (still classified as Salvator merianae), they're a morph of the Argentine Black & White tegu, but they're actually smaller in size (like 1-1.5 feet smaller). Considering their smaller size, do you think blue tegus could be a more manageable option for someone who has done their research and is committed to providing the necessary care? Or would they still be too challenging for beginners? The reason I ask this question is that, when people say "Start with a smaller and easier reptile," it worries me a bit. While I totally understand the importance of gaining experience, I'm concerned about the long waiting period it would entail. Reptiles can have long lifespans, and I can't have more than one pet at a time. Waiting for 10-15 years for the first reptile to pass away, before having the experience necessary to own a tegu, feels like a huge delay, especially since the tegu is the one I am truly passionate about. I'm really interested in hearing your opinion on this. Specifically, I'd like to know what you think about blue tegus as an option for someone who has thoroughly researched and is dedicated to providing proper care. Given your experience in the reptile community, I trust your judgment in guiding new reptile owners like myself, so any advice or thoughts you can share would be truly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read my message, have a nice day!

I got a couple jeweled lacertas. I loved them so much. Unfortunately one of the babies I got came in sick, got my other jeweled lacerta sick, and I lost them both. I’m glad morph market is now labeling wild caught. The vet said it looked like atadenovirus. After frantically trying everything the vet could offer to save them and watching them get worse and worse, Idk if I’ll ever own another lacerta. It makes me sad even thinking about them.

I got a crested gecko first because of how easy it is to take care of them. Then I just got my leachianus gecko because of how similar the care is. They are bigger and have more attitute but I think they are my favorite reptile ever.

A leopard gecko is honestly the best beginner reptile. I got a leopard gecko as my first reptile and he was super duper easy and cute. Then I got a ball python and I would say they're not as beginner as people claim but still wonderful

Balls are pretty damn easy as long as you understand they go off feed sometimes but it can definitely be a bit stressful until you have dealt with it a few times
@luwildy
@luwildy Год назад
@@specteractual1 yeah I knew going in they were picky eaters but it still stressed me out because I had a baby and he ended up brumating his first year. I kept the temps and his lights the same but I'm in Alaska so his body totally picked up on the light changes (24hr sun in summer and 18hrs of darkness in winter) despite his lights in his tank being the same. Also humidity was harder to keep up with than I expected. I would still call him an easy pet but I felt like there was definitely a higher level of attention and care required for my snake than my leo. I will say my ball python is much friendlier than my leo but they're both sweethearts.
@shinesreptiles
@shinesreptiles Год назад
I think no baby animal should be a 'beginner' animal. I grew up with all sorts of exotic animals so I felt prepared when I bought a baby ball python. He refused to eat for about 4 months and after some time it really freaked me out. But he's super chill now and eats every time I feed him. Then I got a rosy boa, she was around 1,5 years old then and I never had any problems with her. Plus most people somehow forget that their baby animal will grow much bigger and will need more space than right now... In the end, all that really matters is commitment and the interest in learning and improving the best care of each animal.

Im not surprised Tegu made the list, since Ive watched videos of black and white Argentine Tegus free roaming people's homes and wanting up onto couches like dogs. I kinda expected other big reptiles to get on the list since I dont know if many people would willingly keep a big iguana, certain tortoises, and others in their homes. However, i kinda expected some escape artists to make the list and it shouldn't be surprising if just recently introduced to the pet trade kind of reptiles would make the list.

I own two adult leachianus geckos (one male, one female)...😍 I think I got lucky haha, because both of mine are puppy-dog tame- they are chill to get out and handle and have never really been 'sassy' with me (thank godness).🥰 Ive heard my male "bark" once, I scared him by moving a plant pot... but the next day he was back to his normal calm self. Plus, neither of them poop on the glass... Infact, my crestie always paints his food on the glass! My leachies are soo clean in comparison. I think I won the leachie lottery with my two 🤣 Care wise, I do nothing different for my leachies than what I do for my crestie or garg to be honest. I use uvb ect for all. The only real difference for me, is leachies tend to eat a bit more... and I have my leachies in larger enclousers than my crestie and garg- it just makes sense since leachies are much larger.

As a kid in the 80's I had newts, toads, some little chameleon things, and fish. Then 2 yrs ago i got a tegu. Now I have 3. I totally agree they are not first retiles and they are high maintenance and expensive to keep them right. Don't get me wrong, I love them. They are smart and they all have a different personality. I have a blue, Chacoan and black and white.
