What camera system is best for wildlife video? It's quite different than wildlife photography, videography relies more on stabilization if you want to have minimal gear and shoot handheld. Best cameras and lenses for wildlife. Canon RF full frame with bird detect autofocus? R5 with 100-500mm? How about Sony a7s iii with 200-600mm? 240 fps slow mo. Fuji XT4 with 70-300mm? Is the 100-400mm worth it? Olympus em1 iii maybe? Very lightweight 75-300mm. That 150-400mm is ridiculous. Canon EOS R with it's 1.745x crop in 4k? Life hack?

I know your dislike of Panasonic, but the 100-300 on the g9 is still a pretty decent, lightweight and cheap combo for video. You got the 180fps, got the 4k60, can go 10 Bit in full HD with an additional 3x crop without much quality loss while still retaining the 100mbps and the AF works pretty decent if you use backbutton focus with animal detect(no continuous or you’re doomed). 2nd hand, that setup can be bought for 1000-1200€ here in Europe. The canon 70-300 with a speedbooster is also pretty neat on mft. You get the equivalent of an 100-420 with an fstop of 2.8-4 for a reasonable price.

Happy to see you are starting to focus some on wildlife video now! I enjoy your videos. I use the sony a6400 with 70-350 and a7iv with 200-600. The 200-600 is well worth the extra weight... Very sharp. Also, the 70-350 lens stabilization is really very good! Obviously rolling shutter is a problem with the a6400 though, but ok for slow-moving or nearly stationary subjects.

Nice overview with good comparisons. I currently use the Nikon D7500 + Sigma 150-600mm C lens for wildlife (photogrpahy, not video) which gives great results. I used to use the Panasonic G80 + Panasonic 100-300mm lens which was good in terms of size, weight and price but...the AF was not great and there is no Slow-motion video option. Last year I bought the Fujifilm X-S10 with the 18-55mm f2.8-4 lens which is great-I was hoping to buy the XF 70-300mm lens for wildlife but it is still unavailable/out of stock here in the UK, so frustrating! I am waiting to see what the X-H2 will be like & the 'wow' camera from OM Systems; that could also be great for wildlife combined with the 100-400mm lens. I hope Fujifilm & OM up their video output, AF performance (Ai bird detection etc) and then we've got something going on!

The Panasonic 100-400mm lens is a better option on any MFT body than the other xxx-300mm and xxx-400mm options. The lens IS works quite well. When paired with the G9, my experience is the Dual IS even at greater than 2000mm effective focal length (400xMft Crop-2x1080pCrop incl Ext TeleConv) is manageable hand held for short clips.

Photography loser here. I had the Sony 200-600 for a while. Took it to Oregon and NoCal with me. It's OK. I didn't find it amazing,, especially wide open but it was OK. Heavy as actual balls. Returned it and stuck with the lighter (but more expensive) 100-400 GM on the a7RIV so I can crop and still get almost 30MP.

I got the RF100-400 and R5 and use in 4k 60p crop mode (which still looks better than old R in 4k). The weight is the best part. Sharp enough. The lens stabe is EXCELLENT. Don’t buy anything til you try it for mediocre wildlife vlogs. That lens is game changer for mediocre canon wildlife system. RECOMMEND BIG TIME.

Hi Casey, a couple of things you might have missed for cheapish wildlife video are bridge cameras, that suggestion probably went down like a lead balloon. Also for finding your subject a dot sight. The dot sight sits on your flash bracket and gives you a dot on the subject, with none of the tunnel vision you get through a view finder. The dot on your subject then gives your auto focus a better chance of locking on.

This is a great review of the options, I really enjoy the Canon 7DII with the 100-400 for .....🙄 Photos, yeah I know, I would like an option for video with lots of zoom range, you've given me lots to think about, I wonder if you could use the 18-400 canon mount Tamron with a Sony adapter on the FX6 ? 🤔 ...although you are making a great case for Fuji. If you ever want to take a trip around town I can swing by and we can load up and hit a few really great wild life and city scape locations from here to Hamilton. I'ld be interested to see what the "best settings for the different equipment I have would be.

The OIS on the Fuji 70-300 is good enough to pair it with almost any Fuji body... The x-t3 works nice and does up to 120 FPS. AF is meh but functional, similar to x-t4. The in camera custom focus limiter helps reduce some of the AF hunting, so I use it where I can. Although I don't own one, the x-t30 mk ii has better AF I believe, and can do 240 FPS. I forget if it has the custom focus limiter stuff. For either body, I think with some tweaking and practice, the custom continuous AF modes can further improve AF. I also use the 1.4x teleconverter, which is f8 max at full extension, but gets generally clean results, at least in California sunlight. The 2x TC is more of a niche thing... Overall the Fuji kit is a real sweet spot. I carry it all in a Hex Ranger sling. Like you said it's a camera I'm actually willing to leave the house with. It's also good to know that some day when I can afford a scooter, I'm future-proofed with Fuji.

Awsome with some wildlife content 🤩 I think Olympus OMD EM1Mark3 or EM1X with 300/4 dual stabilization has to be one of the best. Also maybe the R5/R6 with RF 100-500 maybe? R5 also have the oversampling 4K60 1,6 crop, and on R5 you can program the video button so that you go straight to that mode or any other from photo mode, pretty awsome

I like the cost-weight-AF-video comparisons. I would include Nikon. For my two cents, my go to kits are: a) for low weight EM1III, 12-100Pro, 40-150Pro, MC14, MC20 to cover FFE 24-420/f4, 160-600/f5.6, 80-300 @f2.8 depending on light. It's good for pseudo macro to smaller birds 2-10m (6-30ft) to mammals. b) for "expeditions" with airline carry-on, under 8Kgr incl. backpack, any two of EM1ii/iii/x and four or five Pro lenses from 7 to 300mm (FFE 14-1200!) plus 1.2x and 2x, batteries, filters, cards, cables, chargers etc. With laptop stay under 10Kg and travel many airlines, but not all. The 150-400/4.5Pro is extremely convenient but priced out of most budgets. I respect other opinions and don't claim I have the best, this just works for me.

Canon 90D + Sigma 150-600 C is a cheap and great combo for stills. Another good budget setup that's great is the Nikon D800 + 300 PF lens, but the D800 is really stills only. I've got the Z9 on pre-order, which will be great for wildlife with my 70-200 S + 2x TC. Later this year I hope to also pick up the new 800mm f6.3 PF lens when it launches, so long as it's under $6k. A more affordable option would be the new Nikon 200-600 which is also probably due our later this year.

For Sony you could get the Sigma 150-600, Tamron 150-500, Sony 100-400 with 1,4xTC or Sony 70-200 GM ii with 2xTC. Compared to Sony 200-600: Sigma is around same weight but it's cheaper and it extends when zooming. Tamron is cheaper and lighter but it extends when zooming (and it's Tamron). Sony 100-400 is lighter and smaller but it's more expensive especially with the TC and it extends when zooming. Sony 70-200 is the lightest and smallest but it's the most expensive and doesn't give you that much reach unless you use it in super35 mode. That said, the 70-200 GM ii + 2xTC with A7IV is my goal setup for wildlife because it's kind of 2 lenses in one with the TC. I currently have the Sony 100-400 but I don't like the handling because it extends when zooming and I would like to go even lighter. Perhaps Sony will make a pro-level aps-c body some day that I can use with the 70-200 + 2xTC to get 600mm equivalent in a small package without loosing much of the "big sensor" goodness. PS. I had the Sony 200-600 before and you are right, it's a hassle to carry it around.

BTW, there is a 1:1 Pixel crop mode on the G9 also, using only the inner 1920 pixels of the sensor. Pushes the focal length to 400mm*2*5184/1920 = 2160mm. Not joking, probably very hard to handheld, but IBIS calculation will take that into account. Maybe I'll upload a demo video just for you 🙂👍

I also use a Velbon tiny monopod when shooting longer periods of time as you need to remember it’s 800mm FF equivalent. The new firmware is great on wildlife too. I think he missed an option here perhaps due to user error.

After two years there is the best lightweight option for sony: a6700 + 70 - 350. Better rolling shutter, compact, lightweight, IBIS + OSS, best autofocus on the market, 10 bit color, 4k 120p with the crop. $2200 - $2400.

Weight + size is everything if Yr out all day walking in country side. That bag also needs drinks, food, phone, or maps if no signal. We all know at some point you're going to end up on big expedition looking for plastic bags in that vast unforgiving Canadian wilderness so weathersealed body and long reach weather sealed zoom is needed. Olympus all the way for me in those situations.

Old Zeiss-Pentacon lenses are very good for wildlife photography/cinematography. 300/4 with 2x teleconverter, 500/5.6 with and without 2x teleconverter. I had the 500mm and I still have the 300mm too. Amazing lens, super sharp, even with 2 piece of 2x teleconverter (handheld 1200mm). These lenses are cheaper, but very good options for cinematic wildlife work. A famous wildlife cinematographer said once, you are not the NEWS to hold the camera, tripod only. Be professional. Later when you will have more equipments, shotgun mic, field monitor, SmallRig 15mm rail, etc.. you will use anyway a sturdy tripod with videohead. And camouflage clothes, mask, gloves, ground blind/hide for shy birds and animals...

I am the Sony RX10 IV AND the Olympus E-M1 II (worse slo-mo and AF than mark III but whatever) + 40-150 f/2.8 + MC-20 (80-300mm f5.6) user and I am telling you: Sony bolws Olympus out of water in terms of: 1. IS (stabilized lens vs sensor althout that depends on shooting scenario), 2. low-light (BSI sensor and same apeture equivalent), 3. AF (just unbeatable on Sony although it might be better on E-M1 III if you tweak it extensively), 4. Sharpness of the image (yes I tested it), 5. IQ/bitrate relationship (you need that silly C4K to get fully oversampled image that you get easily with Sony), 6. Slow-mo (insanely slow on Sony although inconvienient to use) 7. Reach (you get that gorgeous-looking clearimage zoom) You may overcome problems 1., 3., 4., and to some extent 7. with Olympus 100-400 but I would have to test it (I wouldn't expect much from Olympus 75-300) and a problem 6. to some extent with mark III of E-M1, but I would have to test it. Slow motion is good when it looks good. On Fuji it doesn't. At least not the 240p. So does on Sony BTW, but 1080 60p is decent. In other words you might already have had the best camera for casual wildlife filming. It was the Sony RX10 IV. It has few annoying quirks like poor battery-life, slow buffer clearing, inability to record movies during buffer clearing, lack of flip out screen and poor displays. But for this price it is unbeatable. I really struggle to come up with something better that does not require a tripod.

i knew he scrapped his XT4 a while back, but why? he was frustrated w/ the AF for vlogging. u can set parameters for that (i forget what it’s called in-camera) to make a constant focal area. i still think the fooj has the best looking all-round imaging outta all camera bodies, including FF, up to the mid $3500 price range. I’ve watched so many vids comparing cameras & the fooj has always impressed me. it has some minor flaws but nothing too bad. Sadly i returned my XT4 w/ his poor criticism before i opened it. i didn’t want to get stuck w/ a brick but now i want one again :(
