We’re delighted to announce the winners of the Kindle Giveaway for sharing your favorite start-up resources and learnings! Plus adding 2 gifts (Rs 500 Amazon Book Gift Card each to buy books of your choice) given the wonderful responses. Keep Reading, Keep Growing! To claim your prize please email us at theseekerbook@gmail.com and provide (1) proof of identity. 1. Grand winner: Shubham Bansal 2. Runner-up: Pankaj 3. Runner-up: Rajput *Kindle Giveaway Winning Comment* from Shubham Bansal Books like - Atomic Habit, Smarter Faster Better - provide specific and actionable insights. But here, I am listing books specific to the business world. 1. No Rule Rules by Netflix founder Reed Hasting Core Insights : Talent Density is more important than Talent Quantity Specific Actionable : Conduct one-on-one feedback sessions at least once every month with direct reportees and reportee's reportee. This can be the single most important action item to create a high performing organisation and the best way to continuously keep the team in-sync with the company's vision. 2. Creativity Inc by Pixar Founder Ed Catmull Core Insights : The responsibility for finding and fixing problems should be assigned to every employee, from the most senior manager to the lowliest person on the production line Specific Actionable : Create a culture of Radical Transparency so people are not afraid of sharing problems which they see. This can be done by setting up examples through rewarding people who surface the most critical problems of their department. 3. Four Disciplines of Execution by Sean Cove Specific Actionable : Weekly Review is the most underrated thing and can produce massive improvements. Have a weekly review of goals with your team. 4. Power of Moments by Chip and Dan Heath Core insights : It's the peak (both highest or lowest) moments which defined our experience. Specific Actionable : Customer delight can be engineered with the help of EPIC framework : Elevation, Pride, Insight, Connection. A customer needs to have multiple moments while using the product where they can either feel elevated or generate pride, or stuck to some deep insights or make a connection. 5. Principles By Ray Dalio Core Insight : Everything in business is a machine Specific Actionable : Identify the equation between inputs and output of the business through this 5 Steps process. : Measure Goals, Identify the problems, Diagnosis, Design new way of doing things, Implement and Measure outcomes, Repeat. The key thing was : Document everything for compounding improvements. 6. Competing Against Luck by Prof. Clayton Core Insights : Customers have certain jobs-to-be-done in their life. They buy products or services which help them do those jobs more effectively. Specific Actionable : Write down the needs of the consumer and then articulate them in a 'jobs-to-be-done' language. Bonus Book : This book along with another book called, Jobs-to-be-done by Anthony Ulwick is a whole package to understand what a customer really wants. 7. Autobiography of a Yogi Core insights : Life is nothing but manifestation of your thoughts Specific Actionable : Regularly visualise your vision for the company in as specific and as detailed manner. Movie/Webseries 1. Money Heist Context : Money Heist is all about foreseeing every possibility and planning every move. It's like a real life Chess game. In real life, we can do away with 2 levels also. Core Insight : Plan the work, work your plan! Specific Actionable : For every decision, foresee at-least 2 degree of possible outcomes i.e Decision ⟶ X no. of possible outcomes ⟶ Y no. of possible outcomes for every X outcomes. Hence, in total we get X*Y outcomes. This increases the probability of making a correct decision. Some people have the ability to do it mentally and intuitively, but for most it's a good practice to systematically write it. 2. Wolf of Wall Street Context : The movie and the book (Way of the world by real life Jordan Belfort) is about making an effective sales pitch. Core Insights : Sales is 99% feelings, 1% features Specific Actionable : The only goal of the sales pitch is to stop the prospects from having any internal monologue and make them emotionally comfortable. And the salesperson has just those initial 4 secs in which they can do that. 3. MoneyBall : Context : The movie, as well the book, share the story of a baseball team which was considered the worst, and then how Coach Billy Beane used the power of Data and helped that same team win the tournament. Core Insights : Right people on right seats are better than great people on wrong seats. This goes counter intuitive to the idea of "hiring great people". Specific Actionable : Everyone is great in something or the other. And it's the leader's job to find that out. Continuously evaluate the weakness and strength of a team member through regular one-on-ones, and adjust them to the role in the company. The great thing about this approach is that it can act as a lever when you are up against a giant competitor who has more resources. 4. Pursuit of Happiness Context : The movie is based on the real life story of Chris Gardnerm, who went from homelessness to becoming a millionaire. Core Insights : Sometimes, all you need is grit, which is stronger than perseverance alone. Specific Actionable : Identify 3-5 people you can call mentors for your business and have regular discussions with them. Grit, at times, is a function of sharing what you are thinking and going through. (This is something which has played an important role in my journey)

All the books I've read so far have been helpful in my Startup and also in my career. But if I have to point out 1 book, it would be "The infinite Game" by Simon Sinek. Finite game has a Start ,mid and End point(eg: Soccer, Cricket ,Exams in School/College) ,There is a Winner and a Looser by the end of the game defined by metrics,time-frame, and agreed upon Objectives. Infinite Game(Ex: Life after studies or college be it Startup,Innovation etc..)which has no defined start line and a finish line. Anyone can start any time and choose to leave the things they are doing anytime. What did I learn. Be it Startup ,Career or whatever you do, it's always necessary to have a Cause. More than building a company or selling the product , it's about contributing ,living and fighting for a cause. Ex: War between US and North Vietnam . US had to withdraw the war because 1)US citizens started to protest. 2)Americans were not able to support the unwinnable and expensive war US didn't lose the war, rather it lost the resources and will to keep going in the game North Vietnam on the other hand were able to Survive till the end because they fought for their lives Moral: Extremely important to have a Cause be it as a Startup founder/Career.. I was not able to run my startup(even though I was generating revenue),not because of money (which I could've arranged) ,but only and only because I didn't have any cause and hence lost the will to stay longer in the game. I was behaving like US, wherein I was suppose to be like Vietnam (with a strong Cause) I'm glad I realised this too early.

Hello everyone, I think one book that can be included along with Lean startup is " The Mom Test: How to Talk to Customers and Learn If Your Business is a Good Idea when Everyone is Lying to You" by Rob Fitzpatrick. I came across this book while i was intensely talking to customers to gather some insights but was failing miserably at it. All customers that i talked to said that they really liked the product and would definitely pay for it. But, after the launch of the product no one actually did. That is when i suddenly realised that we really dint understand as to what customers really want or nor did we know how to find out the same. Finally, after desperately looking for solutions i came across this book and realised that i was asking the wrong question to my potential customers and did not know how to interview them. Hence, would highly recommend it to anyone whose iterating over product, talking to customers and trying to achieve a product market fit. In the same lines you may also consider referring to the blog titled "Do things that dont scale" by Paul Graham. It would really help you in the phase where you are actively talking to customers.

The Rescue, a real-life documentary by NatGeo. A true story of 12 teen boys, all of whom were trapped in the flooded 10 km long cave system for fifteen straight days with no signs of escape, albeit no food for survival. Five Entrepreneurial Takeaways: 1. Be prepared for the unexpected - when setbacks or tragedy occurred, team is not flummoxed into despair and inaction 2. Understand what skills are needed - there was lot of expertise working together to ensure success - scuba diving, cave diving, even anesthetist/doctor preparing the team for rescue 3. Brainstorm ALL options and then make a decision - the team brainstormed the options for rescue, no matter how crazy they seemed e.g. there was even a proposal to leave the boys there for four months. “Think crazy thoughts,” is never more appropriate than when you are solving big problems - go to the edge and even over, with respect to possible solutions you generate 4. Use data - Scientific data such as maps and weather forecasts were used, as well as the knowledge of the local community, who have knowledge of the cave system 5. Put mission before self - The saddest moment of the operation was when a former Royal Navy Seal who had volunteered, lost his life. But the team decided that best way to honor his sacrifice was to ensure the mission was accomplished!

Built to Sell by John Warrillow is about building a business that can survive without you! - I learned a valuable lesson about hiring. "Employ people who excel at selling products rather than services. More than tailoring your offering to the client's desires, these people can determine how your product can meet their needs." A new hiring system based on 3T (talent, trust, tangible) allowed us to turn down clients and focus on clients where we could excel, increasing revenue by 80%

I completed atomic habits and now implementing the ideas into my life and trying to become 1% Better everyday. I've also started reading the subtle art of not giving a fuck to help myself focus on the more important things in my life.

These are some recommendations from my side - Books: 1. The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch taught me to build optimism as a habit, to dream more specifically, and made me realise that not all goals are meant to be. . 2. When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing by Daniel H. Pink gave me frameworks that helped me identify when it’s the ideal time to move forward or take a step back. For example, I now work for 52 minutes straight, and then take a 17-minute break and keep repeating the cycle throughout my work day. Podcasts: 1. How I built this with Guy Raz is a series of power packed interviews with entrepreneurs - From the stories it is very clear that failure is infinitely more interesting than success. And for growth it is essential that we choose to be curious. 2. Imagined Life is a podcast that narrates biographies of famous people - my takeaway is extraordinary lives are very much ordinary lives lived extraordinarily. Movies: 1. Erin Brockovich - talk to your customers so often that you know them better than themselves. 2. The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind taught me how the solution to most problems lies in harnessing the power within us!

Hi Karan, thanks for the fantastic video again. Books- 1. The four by Scott Galloway I read this book in college & the early days of my career, the initial chapters tell about the working culture, strategy & technology used by Amazon, Google, Facebook, & Apple. The last chapters talk about character building to become successful in the business world. 2. Only the paranoid survive by Andy Grove As I am running a startup in the electric vehicle space, this book is helping me in figuring out product & strategy by providing a practical guide on Porter's Five Forces. 3. This is Marketing by Seth Godin He is a marketing guru & clearly differentiate between Sales & Marketing since a lot of people mix up day-to-day sales job as marketing but marketing is very different, it is run by a vision. 4. The Design of Everyday Things by Don Norman He is the father of UX and this book helps me in the product designing for my startup to the very detail like if a sound clicks for on/off button during product operation gives a feeling of satisfaction with why. PS: A great book is coming by this May is named 'BUILD', written by Tony Fadell, on product, culture & team building.

The obstacle is the way by Ryan Holiday. The single most important lesson I learned from the book was to always focus on what I can control rather than what’s not in my control. The book has helped me become more proactive in uncertain situations rather than reactive. It’s based around the philosophy of stoicism. Must read I believe for everyone who is facing uncertainties and obstacles in their life, it helped me a lot to deal with all the issues I faced after my father passed away due to COVID.

Great inputs! Here are the 3 books which impacted me the most in my career as an education professional, as a founder of an education company, curriculum and programs designer and as an educator. 1. Education and Significance of Life by Jiddu Krishnamurti - helped me to understand philosophy of education. what education means to a child, how it helps to build life of a child. 2. Experience and Education by John Dewey - To understand pedagogy, to understand what is an educational experience and how can one create educational experiences for children. 3. Tottochan by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi - to understand role of a teacher. It helped me understand how a teacher can impact positively or negatively on child's life and to some extent, role of a parent too. Education can only be imparted when parent and teacher work with each other towards child's development. For entering into a specific field it is extremely important to understand the crux of it.

One of the most usefull book that changes me and my Team life as an entrepreneur is "MOM TEST by Rob Fitzpatrick". I cannot express how impactful this Book was on our Startup Journey. This book teaches you how to ask right questions with your users and get unbiased feedback. For Example if you ask your mother will you download an app to see recepies. Definately she will say YES to you. But then when you spend months building the product you end up with no user. Even your mom won't be using it. So, this book teaches you the right question which you should ask to your user/ customer personas in order to get right, unbiased feedback from your prospets. 1. After reading this book we never asked users what feature you want? 2. We never asked - Will you love to have blaaa..blaaa... feature. 3. if we will launch this will you use it? New Founder specially in early phase its a must read.

I Read Rich Dad Poor Dad. At that time i get to know about four quadrant and I got inspired to start a business. This book changed my mindset from job seeker to aspiring entrepreneur. To be very honest I have not started anything yet however I am a aspiring entrepreneur. After doing some research about organic farming I left my job in 2017 to get out of the Rat Race and I failed at ground level.. I also failed in online Toy selling business. I always wanted to become a social entrepreneur and wanted to impact millions using technology in social sector. And THANK YOU KARAN SIR FOR SUCH AMAZING VIDEOS... LOTS OF LOVE 💗

Hi Karan. In my opinion, it's not a particular piece (book or movie) that would inspire or give insight. Rather, it depends on our attitude; how de we perceive these books and movies. For instance, Steve Jobs or Social Network never inspired me despite being biographies of great entrepreneurs. I find the Pursuit of Happyness more inspiring. Talking about books, The Alchemist should be the very first book for an entrepreneur to read, even before Zero to One.

Sir the only movie I would recommend any entrepreneur should watch is Pushpa.. I believe it is one of the strongest character I have seen. I am not really a big fan of larger than life character movies. But Pushpa is a common man with the highest grit and determination. He is fearless and confident. If I keep the dhisoom dhisoom aside I see the leadership qualities which is unmatchable. He has the foresight to lead during uncertain times and he clearly leads by example. He is courageous and he builds an empire with his courage. He is not perfect but he choses to focus on his strengths than weaknesses. And in the end he is our homegrown talent even if it is a figment of someone’s imagination. Everyone should aspire to be courageous like Pushpa to excel in their career. This movie in simple words is about his career and how with no backing or support he manages to cut through his competition and rise to the top by skilfully using his intelligence. The one thing I’d like to conclude my comment is that how small time companies like Uber, Netflix disrupted incumbents like Blockbuster, car rental industries with disruptive innovation similarly our Pushpa disrupted the incumbents of his industry with disruptive machoism.. So my actionable insight is be courageous, take the leap, be confident in your vision. Let your courage and confidence shine rest will follow..

Hi all, I think one book that can be included along with Lean startup is " The Mom Test: How to Talk to Customers and Learn If Your Business is a Good Idea when Everyone is Lying to You" by Rob Fitzpatrick. I came across this book while i was intensely talking to customers to gather some insights but was failing miserably at it. All customers that i talked to said that they really liked the product and would definitely pay for it. But, after the launch of the product no one actually did. After looking for potential solutions i came across this book and learnt that i was asking the wrong question to my potential customers the whole time and nor did i know how to interview them. You may also consider the blog titled "Do things that dont scale" by Paul Graham along with the book if you are iterating over product, speaking to customers and trying to achieve a product market fit.

Please do read "Shoe Dog" by Phil Knight, founder of Nike. It has taught multiple lessons throughout the book, but the one principle/lesson I liked the most was "Fail Fast". Being an entrepreneur we all know that we will face failures on our journey, but we should be ready to Fail but fail fast in it so that we can learn from that failure and move quickly to the next step.

I consider myself somewhat of a company bio junkie. I have always been fascinated to learn how companies got started and in discovering the untold story of their trials and triumphs as they grew. When I was adult my mom bought me a set of children’s books that in an illustrated way told the story of famous company founders like Walt Disney and how they rose to business greatness. I loved those books because they both inspired and ignited an entrepreneurial flame in me that still burns bright to this day. Through the years I have amassed a considerable library of books that tell the behind the scenes stories of ultimately successful companies and their revolutionary founders such as Marriott, Coca-Cola, Starbucks, Google, Walt Disney, DELL, and of course McDonalds's. What these companies have in common is that they each experienced many challenging setbacks on the way to eventual success. So, when The Founder movie, the story of controversial McDonald’s co-founder Ray Kroc, was released recently I was anxious to see it. Here’s what I learned. My Top 5 Lessons Learned from “The Founder” 1. You Are Never too Old to Follow Your Dreams. While it’s the young tech company super stars that seem to get the press as overnight successes, there are thousands of lesser known entrepreneurs of all ages that have a dream and an idea and are making sacrifices and taking the necessary risks to launch their ventures. Ray Kroc found success at 52 and so can you. 2. Success Comes After Much Trial and Error. McDonald’s was an overnight sensation unless of course you consider that it took the restaurant’s namesake McDonald brothers several years of various restaurant iterations to develop the McDonald’s system that could be franchised. When Ray Kroc was once asked about how he became an overnight success, he said, "I was an overnight success alright, but 30 years is a long, long night." Most companies require long hours and years of persistent hard work to make them successful. 3. Honor Your Promises and Agreements. While today’s business climate requires a significant dose of “legalese” to get your operation up and going, you are only as good as the promises you make and keep. Your word and a handshake should be your contract. Had the McDonald brothers gotten in writing Ray Kroc’s verbally promised 0.5 percent royalty at the time of the company sale in 1961, they would have received an estimated $15 million a year by 1977 and as high as $305 million a year by 2012 which would have gone to their heirs. 4. Be Ambitious but not Ruthless. Success at any cost is accompanied ultimately by regret and loneliness. You don’t’ have to put your competitors out of business to excel. Don’t leave a wake of destruction on your way to success. Be persistent but do it the right way. 5. Don’t Neglect Those That Matter Most. While you are devoting long hours trying to build your company don’t forget to give meaningful time and focus to the loved ones who support and sustain you back on the home front. At the end of our lives few will say they wished they had spent more time at the office instead of spending time with those that matter. I think it’s safe to say that most successful founders have toiled for years to achieve their definition of success and it will likely take you just as long to achieve yours. Founders get to dream, decide, and do to launch their ideas. I’m fortunate to work with founders at all stages of company growth cycles where I get an up-close view of their struggles and their successes. They both inspire and motivate me. Good luck to all of you current and future founders! Thanks Karan♥️

Thank you, Karan! Very good post. I am going to check out OKRs and The Hard things about Hard Things immediately. Have read some in the list (Zero to One which was amazing) and will check out the remaining in the future. Also, I am curious to hear your thought on why you think Malcolm X increased your willpower. My favorite books 1. My Experiments with Truth by Mahatma Gandhi - Learned how a simple habit (I will always speak the truth) if persevered against all odds could move empires. Also, learned how we need to constantly experiment in life to keep growing. 2. The Annihilation of Caste by BR Ambedkar: It helped me to understand what critical thinking meant and why we should not get bogged down by big names. Masterclass on critical thinking. 3. Innovator's Solution by Clayton Christensen: Taught me how to analyze a business and an industry. Taught me the power of strategy and strategic 'moves'. Disruption helped me as a life philosophy. 4. Aram by Jeyamohan (Tamil): Aram means selfless compassion. The 'character' of the characters in the stories in the book is what I aspire and it taught me how to do everything in life as a service. 5. No Rules Rules by Reed Hastings: This book taught about leadership and organizational culture in a very unique way. The biggest takeaways are 'creating a feedback culture' and increasing talent density. Movies: 1. Gandhi and Swades: For the same reason as the book 2. Annamalai (Tamil): This Rajinikanth movie taught me the power of dreaming, focus, determination, ocurage and surprisingly, forgiveness. I used the forgiveness aspect repeatedly in my life and it gave me so much peace. 3. Charlie Chaplin Films: Creativity, Humour, Risk-Taking, and understanding the pulse of the audience across any culture. It just works everywhere. 4. Lion King: I started my career in computer animation. This movie had the power to make even the industry insiders get amazed by the craft and the quality. 5. Children of Heaven (Iranian): This movie taught me the power of constraints. Because the filmmakers had a very tight budget, they were able to create that extraordinary climax running sequence which otherwise would have been lost in gimmicks. Blogs: I don't read blogs that much. The blogs that I really liked are the following 1. Bruce Lee's notes: Bruce Lee interpreted my favorite philosopher J. Krishnamurti's 'Truth is a pathless land' to break down all his frameworks, his martial art technique and created the famous 'no way as the way' which remains my biggest aspiration in life. 2. Karan Bajaj: I see myself in him except that his reflections and his pursuit were far deeper. I have learned so much reading his blogs and watching his videos. My reflections have become better. Thank you for making me reflect and share these above. Hope it is useful to somebody.

Hooked by Nir Eyal has been the most useful book for me as it helped me understand how to motivate your users to build habits. It can be used in a good and bad way but i choose to look at it from the perspective of making sure the users bring a positive change in their lives by incentivising their actions and making sure they have intrinsic and extrinsic motivations to interact with the product.
