That Director should have been named and shamed if not just sent to jail... at the very least stopped from directing ever again. To force an adult woman to weight the same as a 11 year old is just wrong. And how the chinese authorities permit this is beyond understanding. But hey, this is a price that apparently these actors are willing to put up with. Still I think they should be laws to stop this brutality but not surprised there are none, when their own citizens/fans demand from them impossible standards. The person who wrote that article I hope it was sued 3 times over. Ever so easy to bully someone via net when you are fat and ugly yourself, and could not reach those standards in a million years!

I could see all my rib bones. My underpants were too big for me. I looked healthy at 50 but 45 made a huge difference. Another problem is i gained 15 kg in 6 months after being released from the hospital. I heard it is because body goes into survival mode and starts turning everything into a fat and storing it. My metabolism was never the same again. I was one of those people who never gained a weight despite eating a lot. But now i gain weight just by breading. Actors and actresses that go into extreme diet probably would face similar problem. You start gaining a weight much easier.

I would imagine absolutely everyone on set works their butts off. If the ML has to be up at 4 am to begin makeup, makeup staff have to be up at least that early. Also Chinese dramas pack so much in to a very limited time line, production-wise. One thing I always notice, is how fatigued the main actors are by the end of the series. It's punishing. I appreciate everyone's contribution to the entire result. It would be so much better if they took better care of everyone. Not everyone is replaceable.

I think even if the more supreme pure being, or an actual God was cast in one of these dramas, the people who complain would find something wrong with them and complain about that. The complainers just look for anything to complain about, because it makes them feel better. The actors do a brilliant job and they express their emotions clearly on their faces. So even if I can't get subtitles, I can still kind of figure out what's going on just by watching their expressions. And not the big expressions, the little side eye, the tiny smile, that teeny movement of one eyebrow, a head tilt. My favourite actor is Dylan Wang. He nails it.

Probably the difference between costume dramas and more serious daily life dramas. If you see chinese drama with modern village, daily life settings, none of them are "attractive". They are just very realistic portrayal of average chinese low to mid class people, their daily life struggle, toxic asian parents e t.c. Costume dramas are "less serious" and until recently they were low budget with less experienced actors and actresses. All they had to do was to look "pretty" in pretty costumes. Now costume dramas are gaining popularity and casting big actors but peoples views are still the same. It is all about visuals

I'm totally feeling bad for liking historical dramas over contemporary ones. I will need to ween myself off them. I know this will not contribute to prevent male and female actors having to go through these tortures. This will only happen when enough netizens object to their idol being subjected to pressure to lose weight, being made to wear heavy wigs and headpieces and tight costumes while swinging themselves and heavy weapons in the air. Have these prop departments ever heard of plastic, nylon, silk? Netizens should stop criticizing actors' looks and shame production companies and directors instead.

This is the reason why I love costume drama more. It is never for the faint hearted actors. A lot of discipline and skills like martial arts needs to be perfected. The weight aside from looking good in the costume is probably also due to the many liftings to mimic flying. They can't be heavy then suspended or flying in mid-air. The dizzying heights where they sometimes are dropped from is enough to make your body shiver. So yeah, I love costume drama very much.

Note that in the first period dramas (2009-2015, for example in Nirvana on Fire), male hair was more natural, which corresponds more to reality, and allows the actor more freedom of movement. 😡😡 I feel like this video just completely passes over how incredibly dangerous the extreme weight loss described at the beginning is. Personally it feels like those directors should be in jail as a direct result of their actions the actresses heart muscles (See Matt Damon near fatal heart issues) have probably been damaged. Does anyone warn those actresses, if you loose the weight we're expecting you to loose, this is going to affect both your brain chemistry and structure. If you cut your calories down to the level we expect you're body will begin cannibalizing itself, also, when we're finished be aware just because we've never heard of an actor/actress dying of re-feeding syndrome doesn't mean it's not possiblephysiological

The actors deserve praise and sympathy for their endurance, performance and all the suffering whilst giving their best. The prod companies and especially directors should care for them more in turns of health. Too many were seriously injured and had hardly enough time to recuperate. As for the wigs.....shouldn.t a scientifically advanced country be able to develop some healthier products to fix wigs? Do they have netcaps underneath to protect natural hair? Where are the potions to heal the scalp?.........considering all the circumstances described it is amazing how perfect the performances are both from male and female actors. Awsome !

Damn, they need be unhealthily thin and eat less, but they still need to have enough stamina and be strong enough to carry heavy ass props, while being suffocated by layers of clothing and heavy wigs for long periods of time, and still face getting bashed by netizens. Period dramas are amazing but the actors have to suffer such inhumane conditions.

So I hope the industry consider safety and healthy environment, while at the same time as part of I-netz, giving supportive comments for them..

Thank you to the actors who go through so much pain and agony. I wish there could be a better option that is less damaging and less painful. I wish they could have regulations so they have better times while acting. We are very appreciative of their hard work. Ignore the netizens, listen to the rest of the world. You are all fantastic.

I don’t understand how the “netizens” (trolls more likely) have the audacity to criticize the actors. I’m guessing most of them are neither good looking nor have the talent or skills to become one. If you don’t like someone that’s ok, DON’T WATCH THE DRAMA!

It seems taxing to act in costume dramas I feel sorry for the actors especially the women weighed down by heavy headpieces I never realized just how much sacrifice actors have to make for their craft and our entertainment. Thank you very much I appreciate your hard work as I really enjoy the genre especially xianxia and wicks which I presume is even more difficult than normal historical period dramas due to its heavy fantasy emphasis. As I enjoy these dramas more than modern dramas I hope you can continue with your hard work and again I thank you for your sacrifice. However, I do believe that those involved in the making process of these wonderful dramas can exert more effort in finding solutions to the problems faced by the actors is there no way of creating realistic but less heavy hardware, weapons etc, as for costumes can't the visual effect of clothing layering be achieved without actually having to wear the layers it's hard to believe that special effects has advanced so much yet no solution has been found to these basic problems facing actor. In my opinion it should not be a sacrifice to be borne by actors who already have a heavy workload in acting but these problems should be solved by those making and profiting the most use some finances in finding solutions and those representing actors should exert pressure on them to do so for the health and benefit of the actors.

I had watched another video about the longest promise and how hard it was for the actors to film it, etc. It’s definitely very challenging for the actors to film xianxias and wuxias. Seeing the behind the scenes makes you appreciate all their hard work even more.

I for one see them all as quite beautiful and handsome and am deeply appreciative that they go through so much just to create costume dramas which are my absolute favorite dramas. I will pay any price to watch costume dramas here in USA! Thank you to the Actors and God Bless each one of you! You each have my love and thanks for all you do!

Ms. Zhou Dongyu is a beautiful, petite, versatile, talented, and gifted actress and artist. She is a kind and caring lady. She is friendly and real in her interactions with others. She has a radiant smile that lights up her entire face with warmth and joy. She looks absolutely stunning and gorgeous in her various costume attires. “Ancient Love Poetry” is one of our favorite dramas. My family has enjoyed watching this drama numerous times. Ms. Zhou Dongyu’s portrayal in her roles were outstanding, excellent, and superb. My family has enjoyed watching all of her movies, dramas, specials, events, and TV shows. They should find alternatives to.how the wigs are fixed onto the head and how they are removed! Also the headresses could be plastic copies so that they are much lighter....food should be provided on set with proper break times to allow everyone including crew and the cast to eat! The actors and actresses are all underweight which will cause health problems when they are older....there needs to be some organisation to cover their rights...there is nothing to.protect them from abusive demands ...long hours...being undernourished...forgive the pun here ...but are you all losing the plot???

I love the costume dramas due to their high aesthetics and their beautiful impressions of actors, clothes, buildings and nature. I assumed already that all the spfx scenes are very hard work outs but reality tops my assumptions. Hence I keep being amazed by how skinny and young looking male and female actors are when in leisure wear, I think that it is up the actors whether they want to put up with the hard core drill. However, production companies and direcitors could make their life easier since nowadays there are many new light weight materials that can me molded in all kind of forms ie. swords, shields, garments - maybe it is too expensive but they should keep looking into it.

It is so stupid, to make gorgeous movies and not to be capable of finding hair products that don't hurt, silks that won't weigh a ton, keep the comfortable temperature, etc. If you don't respect your people who will respect you? Lou Yun is a ballet dancer, he is magically graceful, and you can't double check the wire? Producers must respect their country which means taking care of actors popular in China and abroad.

That all sounds horrible, but I think I feel the worst for the women actors who are expected to wear heavy headpieces on top of already having gotten down below 100 lbs. On top of heavy many-layered costumes. I mean, by the at point, the headpieces and costumes are significant portion of their body weight! Not to mention it's really not great long term to have starved your body that way.

I always think to myself, these actors, while good looking but so thin. I myself prefer someone with healthy weight and a bit muscular (if men), or healthy weight with some curves (if female). Not obese, but not look like anorexic too.

I love the Xianxia dramas. I thought before that the costumes and various accessories as well as wigs might take their tolls on the actors. My respect for the actors who willingly, time and time again go through this has gone through the roof. No one has the right to tell another person what they are suitable for. Zhou Dongyu was brilliant as Shanggu in Ancient Love Poetry. And changing an actors face using A.I. or swapping it to another person is incredibly disrespectful.

I hope this makes it through to the actors in these dramas. If your scalp is suffering because of the glue and the alcohol from the wigs, please use castor oil after removing it all. It rubs in quickly, dries so you don't see an oily residue, and will help you keep your hair. It feels very soothing and healing. I was losing my eyebrows on the outside of the arch, and they are filling in, now that I've begun using castor oil. It's good for hair, eyebrows, eyelashes, AND wrinkles and dark spots. There are other things it's also good for, but those are the things I know of. I'm sure you can pay for more expensive items, but this is simple, and it works. Love your dramas. Sorry you suffer so much.

Horrible how citizens, fans, and professionals in the industries treat their talent. I heard that the men are so skinny they cannot pick up the females, which is why you’ll see them harnessed up, or they look like it. These guys are under 100lbs, which is crazy. The men cannot be too much more at what 5’11 or more?

These weight demands directors make seem dangerous and unhealthy to me. In WW2 my grandfather was in a punishment camp for about a year. When he got back home, he weighed about 42 KG. That was partially due to sufferigg nog from dysentery (and many other things). I do not want to bodyshame anyone for being thin. I just think that the demands made are imposing a serious health risk.
