What makes the best daily driven classic car? My top two choices are the G50 Porsche 911 and a Toyota Supra MkII. I give the pro's and con's of each car as these are personal cars for at least 6 months. Life is too short to drive a boring car!

When I was in highschool my girlfriend's Mother had a black on black Supra Turbo and it hauled ass. I never got to drive it but I will never forget how good she looked. I joined the Air Force after graduation and was stationed in Germany where a friend of mine had one in silver. He let me take it on the Autobahn and I got it up to 120mph. It handled like a dream.

I’m in Atlanta and had an 89 911 coupe back in the early 00s. It was a challenging daily. Traffic sucked and the ac was nonexistent. In the summer I’d have to turn the car off in bumper to bumper for the oil temp even with the wheel well radiator and fan. I would be on the verge of heat stroke some days. I was in my early 20s so I could somewhat handle it. If I were to do it now, I’d get a manual switch for that wheel well radiator fan and electric AC. I had an 86 targa since and currently an 84 targa. I like the spring clutch is so much easier on me. I remember that hydraulic clutch killing me in traffic. It took so much effort. I don’t mind the 915 over the g50 (even though the g50 was so smooth and satisfying to shift) so I’ll stick with the spring clutch. For my second car, I’ve always kept a Honda CRX and r12 AC. B16A is a great engine. I upgraded from the USDM CRX in 2008 to a rhd JDM SiR. I guess I’m drawn to the most impractical forms of transportation.
@GarageTimeAutoResto
@GarageTimeAutoResto 25 дней назад
I love the CRX too. Thanks for the feedback on your 911 experiences. They do run hot. Smog equipment on the later cars is often blamed for higher temps. 915's are good transmission too.

I love the MK2 Supra. If I had one today, I'd daily that every time before my SC. The ergonomics in the 911 for me just don't work as a six footer. The gear shift, steering wheel, and dash are too far away (I can't sit crunched up). I used the longer momo hub adapter and a shifter lever extension to make it more comfortable. Ergo not being an issue, the 911 hands down is way more fun to drive.

The Supra does feel more spacious and easy to reach everything. I forgot to mention the tilt column in the Supra. I also totally agree the 911 drives better and is more fun.

I had 205,000 pleasant miles out of my '84 Supra until a clown drove into it. Apart from routine maintenance, it needed an alternator, wiper motor and a fuel pump. Try that in a 911 and it would require a lot of expensive repairs. PS the E36 M3 that replaced it was faster and better handling, but a lot of failures and a lot of money to keep on the road.

I have an 85 Supra that I'll have forever. Yours is in far better condition than mine as mines been a daily driver for the last 10 years at least plus over the years my dearly departed dog left a mountain of fur in it and holes in the passenger arm rest through standing on it while hanging its head out the window as we traveled all over the countryside. Took the original 5me engine (as opposed to 5mge) out after it's 3rd or 4th blown head gasket in 18 months and threw it in the bin. Dreadful engine. Put a 1jz in it. Extra 70 hp for free and it cruises like a dream. It's a great car not that there's many of them left here in Australia at least. Just wanted to say that they have the most comfortable seats possibly of all time. Can drive long distances which I often do and no numb bum sore legs no nothing. The driver's seat has 8 different adjustments you can make. Mine are some sort of material though. They're not leather. Not a fan of leather. Only downside to mine is in the wet weather it's hopeless even with its Lotus rear end. There is no weight in the back so going around corners in the wet is always an experience. One more thing the spoiler you mentioned on the hatch is actually a sunshade to stop people in the back seat cooking on a hot day. Love your Supra. Long may it live.

Some like the new Koran EVs are appliances, but there are plenty of new cars that will be classic and sought after eventually. I don’t know how old you are but I’m in my 40s and I built cars in the early 2000s that are very expensive now, me and my car buddies used to sit in our garages and debate this very thing, which cars were gonna go up in value and which we should just get rid of now, will Japanese cars ever be “classic” and expensive the way a 69 Camaro is? After 25 years I can confidently say, any vehicle that is rare will go up in value.
@GarageTimeAutoResto

Tom, you’re good at car reviews. Your conversational style is refreshing. I wonder if being in SoCal has something to do with why you get more comments on the Supra? 911’s are rare in so much of the rest of the country. @GarageTimeAutoResto
@GarageTimeAutoResto 26 дней назад
Thank you and thanks for voting. SoCal is a hotbed for Porsches and they are everywhere, even classics. I think the Toyota is less pretentious and more approachable too, so people are more likely to chat about it. This is one of the few Toyotas that had aggressive styling for that era. This one is the P-type with wider flares etc. I think they did a good job with it. I like it more than later supra which look very different No news on the throttle body fix, but will keep everyone updated as I know more.

Cool, Toyota tried really hard on this car and this was the best model they offered in 1986. Lotus designed suspension, limited slip diff, aggressive fender flares, 6 cyl, Bosch EFI, great w58 trans. It's a bit heavy at 2844 lbs with only 160hp, but perfectly fine as a daily driver. The G body 911 was becoming dated towards the end of the 80's.

I'm touched by your comment and you said it well. Ever wonder why hit country songs are often about old trucks and boats? They get it. Simple and old is better. The 911 is supposed to be an exciting sports car, while the Supra is a comfortable grand touring car. The air-cooled 911's oil system is not "kind-of" a dry sump. It absolutely is and has been a feature of the car since it's introduction (up to that point). The water-cooled, (non-GT) flat-6's on the other hand do have a "sort of" dry sump.

The scavenger pump tries to get as much oil as possible back to the tank, but there is always some oil left in the crankcase. There's an entire service bulletin on how to prevent oil frothing so the pumps can do a better job. It's not a perfect system.

Ooh, I actually bid on a mk3 and lost. I'm already wishing for a mk3 or Mk4 engine swap😀

@@GarageTimeAutoRestono please leave the 5m in it. you’re just gonna ruin the supra and devalue it. buy a crappier mk2 if that’s what you want to do.

I had a Mk2 Supra back in the day. One of the cam seals blew out. I rebuilt the engine. A couple of years later, the same cam seal blew out. I ended up trading the car in. Not sure what caused the blown seals. The first time it happened, i just chalcked it up to worn seal, but obviously not correct.

Bummer about the seal problem. Maybe too much crankcase pressure.

@@GarageTimeAutoResto yeah, I don't remember how the PCV system worked on that car, but definitely something to check in your car. The same seal blew out twice, so maybe the seal housing was a bit oversized. I didn't think to check it. That was back in 1998 or so. That was a sweet car. Glad to see you enjoying yours. As far as 911 vs Supra, definitely the 911! You can tune it to be a daily cruiser or to be a track monster. There is so much aftermarket support for the 911. Plus turns way more heads if you're into that. I had an 89 Carrera. Everyone, from little kids, to girls, moms, dads, and bike riders were into that car. The sound of the flat 6, the steering, the braking, all top notch. The AC not so much, gotta go aftermarket from what I hear.

Can we stretch a little into the 90s? I had a classic shape Subaru WRX which I adored until it was rear-ended by an inattentionate driver (total write-off.) What I'd give to have that little number back... (Edit: But I'd still pick the 911!)

Don't get me wrong, your Supra is lovely and in great shape too! I'm just a bit 911 obsessed. As a daily the Supra must do great.

@@gherasimtibi The 911 is the exciting emotional classic, but I think that so much here indicates that the Supra is a better car

It's a tough comparison, but the Supra is tough to beat as a practical daily driver and still fun.

Better minus some performance. But more practical to carry things, etc.
