To be fair, there is at least a good reason why Kirby can't talk. Remember how he was an infant in the anime series? Keep in mind Sakurai made a lot of decisions regarding that series, and that was one of them. In other words, despite being an awesome hero who fights evil constantly, Kirby has always been an infant.

Personally, I think the worst gaming cliche is what I call it, for lack of a better term, surprise bosses. Think of it this way. You beat the boss, celebratory cutscene ensues, followed by the boss coming back stronger than ever in another battle. Worst of all, you probably use all of your energy to beat the boss's first phase. While they can be used to advance the plot, they are mostly just annoying. Examples of this are Magolor Soul of Kirby's Return to Dream Land, in which you previously slice him to pieces with a colossal sword, and Elder Princess Shroob of Mario & Luigi Partners In Time. Put simply, you're worn out from the first battle, so this battle will probably wreck you quickly.

I wouldn't mind escort missions if I didn't have to worry about the safety of the NPC. If they could use a weapon to defend themselves and help you out from time to time, that would be nice. Heck a few puzzles with said escort would be nice too.
@misstrussteLgbTq
@misstrussteLgbTq 10 лет назад
Well then it would be a co-op mission. If they just stood behind you or took cover, would be helpful,or the ability to tell them where to wait, nope instead they run up to the enemy and get killed or depending on the game, get in your way and you end up killing them by accident. That and the fact that most of them only have ten lines of dialogue if you're lucky, either give them no dialogue or lots of INTERESTING dialogue.
@sinine1100
@sinine1100 10 лет назад

The worst escort missions for me are from the Pokemon mystery dungeon series. One prime example was in dark crater, I was a Riolu and my partner was a Pikachu. I thought I could take down Rhyperior that had lightning rod so that my Pikachu partner could use discharge. There was only one think that kept us from winning. CRESSELIA BEING WEAK TO MOST OF DARKRAIS MOVES. Another example was a mission where I had to escort a Rampardos to the end of Mystery jungle, and Rampardos wandered too far from my team getting her killed by a Roselia!
@narratornate8841
@narratornate8841 3 года назад
I've never played mystery dungeons, but have you seen the escort mission in psychonauts where you have to escort a kid version of coach oleander through a meat circus? Because holy hell. The parkour is infuriating, if you fail one section you have to start over from the very beginning of the mission, the kid won't shut up and decides to run into enemies going after a bunny instead of running away from the things trying to kill him, and you have to try and use telekinesis to grab the bunny while constantly getting hit by the infinitely spawning enemies.

@joegreen3802
@joegreen3802 2 года назад
@@theburningruler7279 it’s really not that hard. You want to talk about a terrible escort mission in mystery dungeon? Look to Murky Cave in the original Rescue Team games. Unless you have a way to kill the ghosts in the walls, you can get blindsided and cornered as your escort Gangar gets KO’d easily and you can’t do anything about it. What makes it even worse is that you have such a small bag in the old rescue team games to stock up on the appropriate items.
@theburningruler7279

@@theburningruler7279 Doesn't spare from the fact that Gangar sucks in the original, even with a ghost type. He gets into a fight, kiss some reviver seeds goodbye because it only takes one hit due to him being at level 16 with a mistake for a moveset. Also, Dark Crater is really not that hard. You can also take in much more items to assist you thanks to the bag expansions, and if you are playing sky, Reviver Seeds can be farmed with little effort

@LinkMarioSamus
@LinkMarioSamus 10 лет назад
NCfanboy1 If you know the game world well enough. There's a reason Super Metroid is one of the games that comes first to the minds of many when it comes to speedruns. I agree, though I don't mind in Metroidvania games because there it helps the feeling that you're carving your own path through the game world. Even then, in Metroid Prime the backtracking was darn close to trying my patience alarmingly often, especially towards the end. I know because I replayed it recently. And it's still my favorite game of all time anyway! Only other problem I have with the game is its physics engine which goes nuts at certain times, mostly when it comes to knockback. Super Mario 64 is a good example of a game which can get annoying due to having to go through the same areas over and over again. Again, an otherwise fantastic game, but still.

Also, Kirby does not speak English, however, he says cute words like “Poyo”, “Baye”, and “Hiy”, so his language isn’t really his fault. After all he isn’t a grownup alien, he is a baby star.

The reason I think Mr Freeman works as a silent protagonist is that the player can come up with their own version of what he's like. Maybe he's scared to death of the aliens, and only steps up to fight because he'll die otherwise. Maybe he's a deranged psycho, who fuels his need for blood by slaughtering wave upon wave of aliens. Or maybe he's just a regular badass, who takes up the shotgun-and-crowbar lifestyle because he knows it's the right thing to do. It's up to the player as to who he can be.

@AValveFanboy
@AValveFanboy 11 лет назад
VladNorris Yeah, but you spend such a little percentage of the game interacting with people that it doesn't really matter. And the fact that his path is clear just shows that, no matter what person he is, he's still going to save the world. Same as in Fallout, or Skyrim.
@VladNorris
@VladNorris 11 лет назад
If you REALLY could chose who Freeman is, you could choose his path. You could let him destroy everything, or take another measure. i mentioned this a little too much lately, but look at Shin Megami Tensei. You're free to choose your path and the path you take decides the fate of the world. Freeman is not in this kind of narrative, he has a predefined path, so are little details about his behavior. Those little things that Freeman has already defined got him already defined, therefore the inmersion factor or ·deciding who is· thing are ludicrous claims.

1. Mario 64 is a bad example because it's usually different parts of an area, what you actually are doing changes, and the environment often changes to suit the new mission. 2. Nothing to complain about here! I feel ya. 3. I wouldn't call that a cliche, they didn't plan an overly rushed section, it just ended up that way. 4. I don't even understand this one. 5. Eh, some examples are worse than others. Overall, this really isn't an issue. 6. If you're playing MGS and you aren't willing to sit through cutscenes, you're playing the wrong series XD Otherwise, as long as the scenes are skippable or in games like MGS where long cutscenes are both important and consistant then this really isn't an issue.

(This is actually Liams brother) You guys are the best laughs yet. I've seen these cliches before, and you've described them well. I've seen these in online games too. In DragonFable, You have to rely on chance to get an enchanters stone in order to train the dragons layer armour (DragonSlayers deserve humiliation, because I love Dragons). To get one, you have to roll a seventy or over. By bribing with a scale you get ten free points. You may find yourself with rotten luck because you bribe with the last six scales you got, then you roll a stupid seven. Adding that to the six scales you just wasted, you find out that you have just wasted those scales that took so long to get. and the battle line that so long to get through. or you may find that you didn't need to use those scales because you rolled an eighty, and you find out that you just wasted your scales (But at least you got a stone). So I agree with that. Another example that totally annoys me to no limits is the part where Mysterious G steals your mana and leaves you immobile for several rounds. I had to use an armour glitch to past that level. That glitch is no longer available, but it was fun while it lasted. How am I supposed to get my new character past him now? In Steppenwolf: the X-creatures project, it took me forever to get past the insta-deaths of those boulders in chapter 3 episode 2. Most of the time they never give you full detail on how to control the vehicle. I had to figure out myself that you could jump over the rocks with your snow mobile by pressing the spacebar. Then it became easy. I don't know a snow mobile that can jump, but I'm glad They put it there. Since then It's been a piece of cake. There's even escort missions where you have to clear the way before your handicapped friend can follow you in Steppenwolf. where as those games you showed had the characters following you in the middle of combat where they could get hit easily. This is offended in 24 the game where Kim who hasn't had any weapons training moves from her hiding spot before you've cleared the way of half the enemies. I've seen a game series called Mardek, and whenever you want to get to a save point, you can just warp your way out and go to the next save point you find. In Arcuz 2: Dungeons. This is where the difficulty thing comes in. You know how to dodge Onim the minotaur. But his health bar is so big that it takes forever to beat him. But I still have to run around like a chicken with his head cut off to avoid getting hit. To beat him without getting hit even once could take hours. I've also noticed in the example you showed with the cover thing that the players head is half exposed which doesn't make any sense. About water levels, in DragonFable it actually explains how you can breath under water because a load of water breathing potions were spilled into the sea. Every mission since then, you can breath under water. But it still counts as a cliche. I also would like to suggest that there's a cliche that involves unhelpful allies. Kat from Halo reach takes forever to close the door, she flips over a the warthog on top of you, then it explodes. In DragonFable, some of your allies don't level up, but your enemies health increases drastically just to (even the odds), And the amount of damage your ally can do is just pitiful. Galanoth the DragonSlayer can lose to dragons easily when your level is far bigger than his. Gladly this has stopped since most allies in DragonFable are now scaled level. (and at least Kimura from Arcuz 2 helps you.) I totally agreed with your cliches. You brought me back some memories. I should get a youtube account of my own some time so that I can subscribe to you. Keep it up. (I think this is the longest comment You've ever received so far.)

The worst escort mission for me is The Shrine of the Dead quest from The Elder Scrolls 3-Tribunal, because of that priest being not of help against ghosts, despite that he is spellcaster, also he may stop after killing an enemy, making him a burden to me, but if he dies before cleansing the shrine, you don't get any reward, making this quest a waste of time, and this quest is tied to Tribunal Main Quest, which means that this quest needs to be completed, before continuing the main quest. Also speaking of Tribunal, those swinging axes in The Clockwork City are one hit-kill, which means you have to save often, or time your dash thought those axes when they don't swing right.

As someone who has played every Pokemon main series game out there, I would just like to say: NPC Roadblocks. When a game can't come up with a good reason to have you not progress, so they just have some goober stand there and be like "There's something up ahead, please go do other things until I decide to let you across." It's fine in something like a Zelda game where you need a quest item to get through, but when there's an NPC doing something really stupid and meaningless just as an excuse to get you to complete a story objective elsewhere, it's pretty annoying. Especially if you're corralled into an area with only weak enemies, grinding at a snail's pace until you can beat a boss that's annoyingly powerful in comparison.

15: Urgh... I loved Thousand Year Door, but those got annoying fast. 14: I HATE YOU GAME GUY! 13: Canary Mary: combining button mashing and rubber-band AI for a perfect cocktail of rage. 12: Thankfully, I don't play FPS games, so no experience with this. 11: Never ran into this either. Lucky me... 10: Finally! Someone else has played Neopets: The Darkest Faerie and understands my suffering! 9: The only reason I liked Gloomy Galleon was the lack of Zingers except for inside the robot fish. Everything else was annoying. 8: At least The Wonderful 101 does it well. They aren't that brutal, and if you fail, it at least makes it entertaining. 7: Was there really a need to fight him three times? 6: The caves... the Zubat... the horror... 5: Just die, already! 4: This one isn't too bad. 3: Tempura Wizards... that is all. 2: Freaking Exotanks! I didn't mind the Cherubots and Aether Rings, but the Exotanks are so freaking annoying! 1: Oh fuck... all the memories come rushing back. The second Pokemon Mystery Dungeon was the worst for me. The Pokemon you have to escort is at Level 1, but they'll still try to attack the enemy Pokemon. And if your escortee has Run Away for its ability... By far the worst memory I have of this was one particular mission where I kept running into wild Nidoqueen that just loved to use Earth Power to attack my whole party and kill my client!

The grating point of Escort Missions is that the person you're escorting is utterly helpless and vulnerable. But when you're escorting someone who can run for cover, or better, fight back, you're in for an easier time. If your escortee is badass enough, you feel like YOU'RE the one being escorted.

For anyone who's played S.T.A.L.K.E.R. shadow of chernobyl, remember professor Kruglov? If you haven't played S.T.A.L.K.E.R. yet, it's like the dark souls of fps games, even on novice difficulty. Kruglov is a weak scientist you have to escort twice, except instead of him following you, you follow him and protect him, and he doesn't stop for you to use a medkit or loot enemies for ammo. There's also one point with a narrow tunnel that has a bunch of enemies bunched up at part of it, and I guarantee that he will die if he's in front of you there. You can just let him die, but I don't like doing that much.

It's weird that people are complaining about the "escorting Little Sisters while they collect Adam" sections from Bioshock 2, because they were OPTIONAL. You can just as easily take the LS straight to the outlet and heal/harvest her. Completing the extra gathering quest gives you EXTRA adam, but is in no way mandatory.

honest to god, I really don't mind silent characters that much. I have a bit of a soft spot for them, especially in RPG's. What I do mind, are characters with bad voice actors. Sounds weird, but they can completely ruin the replayability of a game. Best examples I can think of: Kratos, from God of War, who just grunts and is incredibly ondedimensional, despite his backstory, and Connor from Assassin's creed 3, who is incredibly bland, barely emotes and is just unlikable.

6. Sonic Unleashed's Night stage battle suites and Crash of the Titan's enemy hordes were flat out annoying, stupid caves in Pokemon, and all survival missions from Jak II got on my nerves. 5. Can't think of a game I played with this... 4. I hate this trope. 3. TNT and Nitro Crate explosions from Crash Twinsanity. You die INSTANTLY. And forget approaching with the invincibility masks, you're not safe either. One-Hit KO moves in Pokemon are sure to hit you more often than they will hit your opponent. 2. I fucking hated the Titan Suit from Jak II; it was clunky as hell, got bogged down easily, and, oh yeah, was a pain in the ass to control underwater! 1. Crash Twinsanity's Doc Amok levels count as this, and while they could be funny, they had some fucking cheap deaths. Granted if Cortex dies, at least you don't lose a life. Jak II only had one escort mission I found tolerable, and that was escort Kid to the Power Station. The others? I about threw my controller at the wall out of sheer frustration. Thought the For Pete's Sake level of Earthworm Jim was annoying? The N64 game (which really killed the franchise) tried to make another one like it but you escort an Elvis lookalike through an alien infested area. It's about as much fun as getting a sunburn.

In Homeworld you can't do that since they will simply rush you to death with tons of units. It seems in SWB you can at least still outsmart the enemy and counter them, in Homeworld it's like "you have 1 Battleship, here the enemy has 3". The better you play the more units come and rush you in the first 2 minutes of the mission.
