Yup! For me, I saw the complete symbolism of it being a 'blank page'. The story was erased. It was deleted. It is now blank. I remember feeling shocked when I first saw it, waiting for something, someone... this was, after all, a Mario game!
yup... I remember when I first saw that and I was legit freaked out. It was also 2am. Yes, I played games late/early... I was married, didn't have to work the next day and had no kids. Now I can barely find time to play anymore. Sniff.
"Then her head needs to spin around several time with carnival sound effects. Just saying if you're going to scar the children's psyche, go all the way. Goodness."
One of the darkest moments for me even as a kid was Admiral Bobbery's state of depression. He lost his wife and blames himself for it, the bartender when you talk to him goes into accurate detail about Bobbery's deep depression. He only decides to join you if you give him his wife's dying message which motivates him to sail again. Wow, just wow.
Orange Yoshi That just confirms that the people who were devored didn't die, in fact, some of them were the people giving you the power to kill the shadow queen,(Luigi)
My personal darkest moment is in Count Bleck's castle as all of your party members are killed off, one by one throughout the rooms. Whether it be Bowser's crushing, the floor giving way under Peach, or Luigi's nuking, the player truly and honestly feels trapped and alone. This is, of course, undermined later, but that doesn't affect the impact of the scene when it happens. Also, later on Luigi becomes infected with a plant and is the final boss. Wonderful.
It's because people hate that they removed the turn-based combat and other things that made ttyd and the original good. It's like the stupidest reason to hate this game.
Chloe Kintner Perhaps I phrased my statement wrong. I said I would never understand why people hate this game. I know why they hate it but I don't understand their reasons for doing so. Do you see what I mean?
Shwah Gamers Yeah. I recently went on a thread on GameFAQS (of course, it was pretty old) and I saw a bunch of comments like, "this game sucks!", "this is not a true paper Mario game!", "thousand year door and 64 are infinitely better!" and shit like that. I saw a lot of people complaining about the gameplay and "awful story". Although one was like "People just can't accept change" which I wholeheartedly agreed with.
***** When I was growing up I played Paper Mario and the thousand year door and Ive played the original on virtual console with a gamecube controller on my wii. I have always loved ttyd and would be devastated if my copy was ever damaged. While I was ok with super paper mario I have never finished it and have no intention of doing so. I own sticker star and it is fun but it is just not the same type of game i grew up with. It's a nice try but it still is trying to hard with the whole sticker thing where I have to scavenge to be able to attack. I would absolutely love if they made a paper Mario in tune with the first two. I miss that unique mixture of amazing original story with rewarding but challenging combat.
I still think Count Bleck's moment should have been number 1. Think about it - the Shrooms want to destroy the world/humanity/Toad-kind, but not all of existence. Count Bleck, on the other hand, literally wants to destroy all of existence - that includes the Toads, the Shrooms, Humanity, as we find in the future: Lumas, Goombas, and even himself, among others. Not even the land is safe - all because he lost someone he cared about. That's pretty dark and even hard-core for a Mario game.
Indeed. The afterlife too, as you see in World 7. Don't even get me started on Dimentio's psychopathy and his character in general, plus how Luigi was nearly an accessory to omnicide. SPM has the best Mario story, but it's dark as hell in lots of respects
I'd think hell is an individual thing. Personally, I imagine being frozen in ice or something similar and being completely aware forever. Hell could be dark for some people.
Sooooooooo... no one's gonna talk about how in Super Paper Mario (*again*) Luigi was first brainwashed into being his total opposite, forced to fight his brother. Then killed by Dimentio, thus losing his memory. And then after fighting him at Castle Bleck being killed, AGAIN, only to return and be forcefully turned into an evil fusion with his murderer (twice) and the Chaos Heart to kill his friends and deft Roy the whole universe!
SonicSimmer Numbers 10, 8, 7, 6, 4, 3, 2 Included or were entirely about parts of paper Mario! These numbers were specifically about Super Paper Mario: 8, 7, 6, 4, 2
Elder Princess Shroob despite her limited screen time does stand out as the real main villain of the game as the battle perfectly establishes how much of a monster she truly is. Throughout the game you have been fighting all her minions and each time they were doing something absolutely vile. Now you finally face their boss and what is the thing you see her do? Shoot down her own minions to use as projectiles against you and during the first phase she actually smashes a ship for a trivial task of delivering her a vim glass. Elder Princes Shroob shows no concern for any life at all and only craves absolute destruction. She is by far one of the most evil Mario villains in history.
One of the darkest moment in Mario games was definitly the final boss in Super Paper Mario, more specifically the part where Dimentio says Luigi is the perfect host for the Chaos Heart. Honestly that leaves open so many possiblitities and dark assumptions we could make about our favorite green man personality and psyque
Paper Mario 64 was bright and colorful, TTYD started down the dark and eerie path, and Super rocked the dance floor with dark moments around every corner. Who's ready for Paper Jam to bring out the big guns and creep the hell out of everyone?
can we just sit back and realize that in Paper Mario Thousand Year Door, in twilight town, when you first enter it, if you walk into a building a mother will talk about her husband being turned into a pig, like the rest of the town, and she is unable to feed her children. She ask Mario for anything to eat ( i gave her a mushroom). THE SECOND YOU GIVE HER SOMETHING SHE GETS TURNED INTO A PIG!!! THEREFORE LEAVING HER CHILDREN TO STARVE!!!!!!!!!! HOW WAS THIS NOT MENTIONED ONCE!!
I think Dimentio tops anything the Elder Shroob could have done. Think about it. Dimentio played both sides of Super Paper Mario, managing to manipulate both the villains and the heroes. He can warp reality itself. And his goal? Why, to destroy the multiverse just for the shits and giggles, of course! Not to mention that the Shadow Queen is often considered the only character to rival him in terms of pure insanity, and she only appears at the end of her game. We get Mr. Kill Everything Jester from the start.
no he doesn't want to destroy everything, he wants to rule everything. its only after he dies that ehd ecides to take the universe with him. also, he ACTUALLY kills everyone. Mario, Peach, Luigi AND Bowser. With a single attack. grnted they manged to escape and come back to life whch was part of his plan but still.
Wow JoshScorcher.......I kinda had a grasp that Mario was kinda dark and menacing, but these choices........they have really opened my eyes, especially the fruend with the Pure-Heart for her source of existence. I seriously almost broke down and cried from the Actualization that she will actually not exist in their dimension or realm. I also saw what you did with Ink there, and I was fairly content. #1 is truly worthy of that spot , as that ingrain of truth is sonber and morbid in of itself. I thoroughly enjoyed this mario-rific countdown, and I will highly enjoy watching it again and again!!
Super paper mario is the darkest mario game period. The villains goals are neither simple nor treated lightly, the villins are alargely pretty complex while the true villain of the game is essentially KEFKA mixed with Kuja and Buggy the Clown, and it details how death (or beleived death) can ruin a person's psyche. however, it also makes peach badass and gives us the msyerious MR L. so....there's that too.
aceotaku But in Mario & Luigi: PIT everything was at stake, every Mario adventure, Mario character and Mario Party where all in danger of non-existence.
I have to agree with this whole list, especially Number One. Adding onto number one, it is more dark than what you have mentioned. If you fail, the Mushroom Kingdom will be destroyed, along with the innocent people and not as much innocent people. If you win, you yourself will wipe out a whole civilization out of existence! Even though there were three Shroobs frozen in Bowser's Castle in Bowser's Inside Story, you still have to kill them. Considering there are more Mario games/rpgs, it means that the canon ending is you wiping the Shroobs out of existence.
Ramón Elbal Ruiz Well, in truth, it's not really confirmed what she is; in game, there's speculation, but nothing concrete. She could either, a combination, or something different entirely.
Line one: DESTROY!!! Line two: DESTROY, DESTROY! Line three: DESTROY, DESTROY, DESTROY, DESTROY, DESTROY!!! My reaction: None. I don't feel sorry for the shroobs, not sad for all the citizens, not even angry at Elder Princess Shroob for doing all this. If Bowser was here to tell, you know what he would say. Absolute... Showtime.
Josh deserves so much more views than he gets. He used to get a pretty decent amount, about 100,000 views per video. Now after his channel took a dip in production several months ago, the average video he makes get's barely 50,000 because he lost so many subscribers, yet he puts more effort into his videos than the vast majority of countdown artists on RU-vid. He REALLY deserves promotion!
Agreed, I mean he's funny, he's creative, he's smart with his choices, he isn't afraid to speak his mind. He is a great you-tuber in general and if I can be frank, to hell with those who think differently and insult him.
WatchMojo... just go away already. You're not funny, you don't even try to connect with your audiences with your top 10s and you're just overall uncreative. You're dull and boring
David Timmer i.........don't mind there existence, in my honest opinion. i think there's a bit of a misconception with them about them being the same kind of countdown maker as say "Joshscorcher" or "Fawfuls Minion". Watchmojo's countdowns are voted by a whole community instead of chosen by one individual like what most of the chaos theatre does. i think there just meant to be the messenger of the general public about what they feel are the best of the best of a certain subject which is why there are so many cliche choices and why they only go over them with very simple descriptions of the film and most peoples thoughts of it. does this mean they deserve the amount of views and subscribers they currently have? probably not. does this make them bad? well to me, not really. i find what they do harmless and its not like there directly ripping off other peoples styles so like i said before, i am perfectly fine with there existence. although that's just my opinion.
Something dark I found in Super Paper Mario that wasn't on your list was that when you're about to fight Super Dimentio, he hypnotizes Luigi because he is the "ideal host for the Chaos Heart". I found that to be dark. The fact that Luigi could be used to destroy our heroes and all worlds is just... saddening.
It is pretty hardcore for a Mario game, but there is a positive to it, at least it's proving Luigi's strength regardless of him being used as a tool of destruction. And at least it wasn't meant to be, either.
The thing is is that every one in mario's party in super paper mario was a final boss. bowser in the first one. peach as the shadow queen in the second one. and luigi as super dimentio in the third one.
LuLz, I totally want a Bowser game were Mario goes insain for god knows why after one of his random times of defeating said koopa king, finding a shiny that one of what may have been really one of her Toads brings in. (they are idiots after all.) So Mario ends up being the one to kindnap Peach in her own castle, and of all the ones for it BOWSER must for once finally (perhaps) get his revenge by being the one to save the day. (sorta seems in Dream Team that Mr.L gets his due) Forming a party like for a Paper -Mario- Bowser game with Luigi and others of the back row. But yeah, that because of the inner darnkess that was allowed to grow in Luigi always being shoved (often literally) off the side or outright overlooked or forgotten if anything at all, kinda like with Princess Luna. You can only keep somepony locked aside in the shadows so long before the shadows grow too long. >_
Jesus....I didn't realize that Mario is so....Dark.... When i was playing Super Paper Mario, i already knew that the game is fucking DARK. But...This countdown made everything worse... And yes, the elder Mushroom boss battle was truly the worst. Not only was it HARD, it was distubing....That means Super Paper Mario, Paper Mario and Mario And Luigi Partners In Time are darkest of the bunch.....Fuck...
:3 That may be random buuuut what do you think about the "New" 3DS? In my opinion: Its okay to make a little upgrade of the 3DS but its a big kick in the balls for those who buyed a 3DS a week ago
Its a shame we probably won't get many more dark moments in Mario since most of them came from the Paper Mario series, and well, that series is going down the drain.
Well... Now we have Origami King, and we got some pretty dark moments, and there's no M&L game in sight so it seems the tables have turned...! (Still praying for a new M&L game to be dropped on the Switch someday tho- 🥺🙏) Also, yes Sticker Star is devoid of personality for a Paper Mario game, but it really wasn't that bad, and Color Splash was overall MUCH better! And ofc we're heading more back into the right direction with Origami King, so I don't think the Paper Mario series is going downhill at all, but that's just me. Just give me playable Paper Luigi again and I'll be happy TwT
so lets talk about how the shadow queen footage you used to show her absorbing the life fluid of the audience had luigi among them....peach just commited canabalisim
Can I just point out that in Bowser's Inside Story, at the end of the game, Fawful FRIGGING BLOWS HIMSELF UP? Seriously, Mario's supposed to be kid friendly, yet we have and ONSCREEN SUICIDE of a hilarious bad guy?!
Are you sure? Because he was like "Forever disappearing...WITH YOU!" and he laughed when it happened, like he knew what was about to happen. I don't know, it just seems too much like he knew what he was doing.
+Danny Butler if I say I think, "Oh HELL no, I'm not sure." But even then, it still wouldn't be on the list. Josh basically said nothing that you have to think too hard about.
The Paper Mario series has some of the darkest moments/themes in any Mario game I've ever played. Especially Super Paper Mario. I've never been so disturbed by such a (normally) harmless franchise.
only every watched 3 episodes of doctor who, they were the episodes "Silence in the library pt1", "Silence in the library pt2", and the last one was called something like "A midnight ride." Vashta Narada are fucking scary.
I think one of the darkest moments EVER in a Mario game is... Well, I would say the Pixl's history, but that honestly goes on for a LOOOONG time. That, and Super paper Mario has been discussed a lot already (Not that thats a bad thing, this is one of my favorite games.) Honestly, I think one of the darkest concepts of a Mario game is probably in Luigi's Mansion. Specifically, E. Gadd. Now let's be completely honest here, we all love this guy, but he's fucking crazy. He is not only the one who put all of those spirits inside of paintings in the first place, but was also the reason Mario nearly got screwed in Sunshine via the Magic Brush! (Sure he made FLUDD too but still.) He is literally trapping the SOULS OF THE DEAD into paintings! They can't move on into the Underwhere or the Overthere, and they don't just stop existing like with the Void. They are trapped in a small space forever, unable to be reincarnated or to be at peace. That is fucked up. They have a RIGHT to be pissed off. Stealing Mario was overkill though (That was all King Boo's idea anyway) but overall the Boss ghosts just wanted to be at rest. Then again, it's not like being in a painting is ENTIRELY bad. I mean Madame Clairvoya wanted to be sealed away, so it cant be too bad
And in the sequel, he willingly uses Luigi as a guinea pig for his untested pixel shifter, which out of pure luck manages to have no effect on him whatsoever.
I feel like E. Gadd might just be the devs way of portraying someone who only lives on science, and doesn't let morality get in. E. Gadd is creepy because his sense of morality doesn't seem to be the same as ours. It's truly a Blue and Orange Morality; it's a line of thinking that boggles the mind and can sometimes leave us asking, "Why??"
Now that I think about it, why do I need the dark moon to exist for the ghosts to be good anyway? Doesn't that kinda suggest they're good against their own will? Or maybe they're not as evil as we might think! Maybe the reason behind the dark moon is for E.Gadd to enslave them and make them do all his hard work! And with King Boo destroying it, they can finally break loose from his trance and live free lives in the haunted mansions! And perhaps E. Gadd would be using Luigi to do all this work as means to recapture the ghosts and enslave them yet again! And the ghosts would be fighting back knowing their fate for if they do get captured! This only proves all the more that E. Gadd could easily be a sinister character, not to mention a complete arsehole to all of these restless ghosts as well as Luigi! Doesn't sound like much of a friendly mad scientist now, does he?
It’s 1 am and I randomly remembered this video. I watched it on my 3ds years ago while I was in elementary school. It really doesn’t feel that long ago and I’m a senior in high school now. I remember the guy in the intro being a lot more cool but now idk as much
I respect your list, but I really can't agree with your number 1. Given the scale and everything at stake in SPM, as dark as the Shroobs were, to me it just doesn't compare. Let's face it, SPM has to be the darkest overall. And out of curiosity…how would you rank Dimentio himself? This is a straight-up psychopath who kills in cold blood, deceives/uses both his supposed superior and the heroes to further his own goals, sadistically preying on their weaknesses and emotional attachments, smiling all the while as he causes them pain, and it ultimately comes to fruition when he harnesses control of the Chaos Heart, the very thing that holds the power to destroy the Multiverse so he can remake it with himself as the new god. Did SPM actually have a Kefka expy character!? It doesn't end there…he MIND CONTROLS Luigi to FUSE with him and the Chaos Heart against his will into the abomination known as 'Super Dimentio', forcing Mario to fight his brother while more worlds are erased like Sammer's Kingdom as you battle. That at least is par to the possessed!Peach/Shadow Queen ordeal. Then there's this OTHER bombshell in SPM: Luigi. Luigi…is the deciding factor as to whether or not the entire multiverse is saved or is erased. How can this be!? Well, in the Dark Prognosticus, apparently he's the "ideal host" for the Chaos Heart… …what- What?! And Dimentio actually rubs this in Mario's face as he mind controls his brother to fulfill the dark side of his foretold destiny, exploiting the unspoken loophole how the prophecies never said he had to do so willingly. Had Dimentio succeeded, Luigi would've been made an accessory to multiverse OMNICIDE all because of his written role in the prophecies. Yeah...
+MinecraftCommand Indeed. And in order to stop it for good, it requires significant sacrifice. All worlds are saved… but not without a price. It's a really bittersweet ending.
Also, just to be sure, for those that misunderstands it, I am not saying that it should be number 1 (it is after all, an opinion based list), I just added something that was forgotten.
im suprised no moments from luigis mansion made it... i can think of a couple... HOW ABOUT THE BOSS BATTLE AGAINST A BABY GHOST. think about it, why would there be a BABY ghost? BECAUSE THIS PERSON DIED AS A BABY. Oh ya and there MUST be some hidden lore that there was a mass murder that went on in that mansion, the main family as bosses and the servants, trash guys, and others are the normal ghosts
Captain Treeko That would actually make sense as to why all of the creatures are ghosts. On a completely random note, have you ever played the game all the way through and captured all boos (and such) without fainting/dying at all? I did once--I didn't have a memory card, haha! Still think Shadow Queen is the most terrifying xP
Mandelbrot Set ive never even played it XD my childhood was Melee, Double Dash, and Mario Party 6 XD I had TTYD, but i literally didnt get to the first area after rogueport... but now i beat the game and its my fav game of all time
Honorable Mention: Rosalina's Story. Not only is the mother's passing tragic, but it feel's so awful and depressing that even though you can shrug off death's with extra lives with Mario, the mother get's no 2nd chance. Just a R.I.P... Also the feels ;-;
I think the shroobs were Japan when it was in something of a blood-lust domination matrix back at WW2... And Mario and Luigi were representative of every single _soldier_ that fought against the Japanese... Putting the final shroob battle in that light really is more of a "thanks for slapping some sense into me but you don't need to go overkill with that nuke" letter to the rest of the world. Kinda late.. i know, but it really represents that.
No mention of the plant zombies from Super Paper Mario? People are kidnapped so that *plant monsters can plant a seed on their heads which causes a sapling to **_grow roots into their brains_** and turn them into mindless slaves*.
Fabrizio Illuminati It kinda ruined the dark factor when we learned that the Flora Sapiens were well-intentioned extremist who simply wanted the Cragnons to stop polluting the water because it made their king go crazy...
no daleks destroy cause everything that isn't a dalek must die all daleks are born with this ideal ingrained into their minds. From the moment dalek is born, all they can think about is conquering and destrying all that is not dalek, which included their cretors the Kaled. THAT is aprt of why the daleks are terryfiying. Also the cause they're nazis.
My darkest moment is from super mario 64. It may not seem so dark now but think back to when you were a kid and playing for the first time. Its the endless staircase. Now its not dark now because we know what to expect. But when your playing and see that for the first time, you run up it and that music plays. You dont know if something will come out is it an insta-kill whats gonna happen. The more you run the creeper it gets. Then you turn around after running for so long and see you didnt really move. Then when you get 70 stars its reveals the door to the final bowser level. In my eyes as a gamer playing that for the first time, thats a dark moment.
Wanna know something cool about that endless staircase? You know how, when you try climbing them, that music sounds like its pitch goes up each time it loops? IT ACTUALLY DOESN'T! I can't describe it very well, but it's your brain interpreting it as not being the same as it continues, called the Shepard Tone. I even just went to listen to it now, but even as it really seems to keep going higher, it's tough to call when it goes back "down" (though if you speed it up, it loses the effect).
Paper Mario 1: The first. Not as dark as the other games, it's the usual Mario vs. Bowser, except better. Paper Mario 2(The Thousand Year Door): The ending is VERY dark. It's like the first one but a bit darker and more outside the box. Paper Mario 3(Super): It pretty much slowly gets darker and darker throughout the game, and during chapter 6 it takes a turn for the "How exactly did this get an E rating?" Very story driven, and therefore sacrifices some difficulty (that seems to happen a lot, story driven games being easier.) Paper Mario 4(Sticker Star): I don't consider it part of the series. Even less dark then the first one. A solid game, but disappointing for the series.
You missed 2: The ending of Super Paper Mario and that time in Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga when you see all those "dying" people and all those broken buildings and houses when Cackletta attacked, I believe? But overall, really good video, people really need to know that Mario games aren't always all peaceful and happy, these moments are either really sad just plain creepy or both. :(
I wouldn't say dark, shocking yes, but not dark. We all expected him to either get betrayed or stay as a team but he did what we never saw, betrayal. I feel it's more character building than a dark moment
what i think is the creepiest moment Is the Dark Star Sucks up bowsers DNA and Fawful Becoming Whole And Ready To kill and destroy Everything If bowser And mario And luigi Didnt act immediately The world would be in darkness Everyone would Have died and the kingdom would not exist anymore this is my most scariest moment...
I think my darkest moment of Mario has to be the World of Nothing. The entire time I was there to get the Pure Heart, I was panicking. I kept growling at my tv to 'let me through, I have to save this world!' but with them each stopping me and then the Count's minions showing up. I kept glancing at the void getting bigger. Then the later parts of the world, the others just letting me through, I thought I would make it... then hearing Count Blecks' tale of just wanting to wipe every single world from existence... like his love was... in reflection to his heart... a dark void of nothing. To see the void swallow everything and then go back to see... nothing. It... struck a cord to me. Like you said, the questions popped up, "What have I done?" "I wasn't fast enough..." I'm serious, I actually had to pause and just sat there and stared at this empty white abyss. lol I nearly cried, kept telling myself 'If I was only faster'. It's just amazing that something could make you feel like that. It just felt odd and scary for a bright game. Still those moments in which the audience of the Paper Mario series are well... killed right in front of you in some boss fights. I just sat there and stared in horror. Like 'OMFG did... did Nintendo just kill innocent creatures in front of me?' O_O Then cringed as the fight progressed to see more of the audience return to watch. I kept looking at them then the boss and go, 'No... no don't come here, go away. God I don't want to see any more of you dying, don't sit there, leave.'
One surprisingly dark moment, for me, comes in the form of...(Spoilers) The revelation that Soma Cruz is the reincarnation of Dracula in Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow. The power that Soma carried with him throughout the game is threatening to take him over, and he knows of only one way to save himself. He ventures into a realm of pure chaos to save his soul, and he knows that if he loses the battle, he will become the very thing he dreads. I DARE you to honestly say that isn't dark!
Even though I'm not a Castlevania player, I can still find that pretty dark. You have to fight against something evil and losing it will make you become the thing you fear most.
What about Chauncey from Luigi's Mansion: Early on, before we get to Chauncey, we end up having to re-imprison his mom and dad with the Poltergust, and then we have to take him as well. when we read the description of his painting: "He cries loudly and never sleeps through the night, but since he was born a ghost, this seems natural." Chauncey is not the ghost of a baby; more-likely he was never even born yet (possibly dying inside of his mothers' womb at some point in the past when she too died back then.
Here's another dark moments as of 2021: Two game over screens in the beta version of Luigi's Mansion and Luigi's Mansion 3. 1. Luigi looking depressed and zombie-like which was thankfully scrapped. 2. Luigi joining his brother Mario, the toads and the princess as portraits. Quite screwed up, isn't it?
You forgot one. You know, the one where Bowser turns the mushroom people into stones and bricks. The ones you break. So in other words, you KILL A TOAD EVERY TIME YOU BREAK A BLOCK!!!!
Me coming here: Sammers Kingdom's destruction from Super Paper Mario better be on this list, that scene messed me up. (Video makes it onto list) YES!!!!! seriously, though, that scene was a masterpiece, using just the bare basics to create a disturbing, saddening scene.
well i never even noticed that they kept saying "DESTROY" in the game but now that i do it is sad. and also something i find dark in the mario games is in Bowser's Inside Story where IN the actually hold on. *SPOILER ALERT* ok anyways in the fight where you are giant Bwser and Fight Princess Peach's castle. it shows that Fawful turn a castle that conveyed peace to the kingdom into a weapon of mass destruction. showing how truly messed up fawful is. and also IT FIRES FUCKING BLACK HOLES!! AND IF YOU FAIL TO BEAT IT WHEN YOU ARE BOTH IN BLACK HOLES YOU GET SUCKED INTO ONE!
Wow, this is probably the closest I've ever come to crying at the end of a countdown. Now that I think about it the Shroobs remind me of two things: the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II and the Daleks from Dr. Who (BTW, I have nothing against Japan and I'm a very casual fan of Dr. Who). Just the fact that there exists in a Mario game an alien race that's literally born, raised and trained only to kill and destroy, and that they're even willing to sacrifice their own lives to make it happen...my God.
I swear, I find myself crying everytime I watch this video. You sure have truly exemplified the meaning of horror to me. Sometimes, it can be good especially when it's symbolic like most of these entries and sometimes physically scary like with most actual horror games. Granted, while it may scarier, I would prefer symbolic horror over physical horror. One last thing, how dare you you not memeify all other countdowns with Ghost Love Score by Nightwish.
Pretty much all of these dark moments are from the mario spin off games, I also think those games has the best story. As you progress trough those games and experiencing more of the story, it gets epic. It makes the whole game epic in my opinion. That is why I love Super paper mario and the Mario & luigi series, because of the dark moments and the amazing story in those games
Spiky While technically all Mario games are somewhat represented in number ten, and some of them by number nine, the main sidescrollers don't have much of a plotline narrative other than "Bowser kidnapped Peach, go save her." Very little potential to create any variance that could be considered a story moment of any shade, besides moments that could be categorized under shock value.
That's one thing I love about the Mario RPGs (since they take up most of this list). When they get dark, they get pretty dark. Especially Super Paper Mario (jury may be out on considering it an RPG but it's sure presented like one, including the same kind of in-depth story as one). As for my personal darkest gaming moment, I'm going to leave Mario (because number 2 / Bleck's entire motivation would be my number 1) and venture out to Megaman. Specifically Megaman Zero. Anyone who has played those games will know exactly where this is going: Dr. Weil. Pretty much _anything_ in regards to Dr. Weil qualifies as my darkest gaming "moment." His backstory, his personality, the crap he does in Zero 3 and 4, his extreme hypocrisy, his extreme sadism, his extreme racism... just everything about him. I'm usually someone who quietly roots for villains, even in games. Even if only to see what a victory for them would look like. I like villains. I love villains. They're usually my favorite characters. And then there's Dr. Weil. It takes something...truly special for me to say "I have absolutely no intention of letting this villain win. At all." He is one of the very, very, very few villains that are so heinous and so utterly evil that it actually exceeds my love for villains. Not just in games, but in all mediums.
I think the darkest moment in a Mario game is in Luigi's Mansion (Does that count as a Mario Game) It is Luigi hanging himself while in a phone call. It is obvious why.
Did u forgot Luigi’s mansion? Theres more dead people than any game, also the hame over screen is dead Luigi -that gave me nightmares when I was a kid-
