TOP INTUITIVE EATING MISTAKES - Intuitive eating may sound pretty straightforward in principle, but to someone who binge eats it can be very confusing. Is it a way to lose weight? Will you gain weight? Can you really be trusted to eat what and when you want without binge eating even more?
Aside from anxiety about weight changes, in this video I share the top four mistakes I see people making over and over again when it comes to becoming an intuitive eater.
You can buy the Intuitive Eating book on Amazon (affiliate link) amzn.to/3mJkBsy
My book, I Can't Stop Eating, is available on Amazon amzn.to/3a6M6Hb

Summary of the mistakes: The top mistakes (roadblocks to implementing intuitive eating): 1) "I'm too broken" to even try intuitive eating (I need to fix my eating first) 2) Confusing intuitive eating with the "hunger/fullness diet" 3) Turning the ten principles into rules (trying to implement intuitive eating "perfectly") < all-or-nothing thinking 4) Using the permission to eat anything as a cover for bingeing (continuing to misuse food) The antidotes: 1) Intuitive eating IS a path to improving your relationship with yourself and food (the obstacle is the way) 2) Intuitive eating is about honoring your hunger and intentions; the hunger/fullness diet interferes with your attempts to eat to satisfaction. 3) Practice flexible thinking (which includes things like self-compassion, inquiry, and mindfulness) 4) Realize that you may eat WHATever you want, but you may not be able to eat HOWever you want (at least, not at this stage in your life/recovery) Great video, thank you! Really appreciate the points you raised.

Your explanation of 'permission' is something I've totally missed, thank you! I have put on almost 2 stone in 4 months after giving myself 'permission' to eat. I was just hoping at some point the over and extra eating would naturally end, but i now realise i need some boundaries around food and that's ok. I now need to help deal with my feelings in different ways otherwise I'm just abusing food.

This was really helpful and insightful, I actually feel so relieved. I was beating myself up for ‘failing at intuitive eating’ after I’d been doing so well, even typing that I can see where I’m going wrong already. The permission with presence message was another one that really struck a chord. Thank you for doing what you do!

Wow! I’m not a binge eater, but I am sure glad I landed on this video. I’m just starting out with the concept of intuitive eating and I learned so much from your advice here. Thanks so much for making this content. Also, I have to say that I am really impressed with how articulate you are and how clearly you explain things. You came up with several turns of phrase that I made sure I wrote down in my notes, like “permission, but with presence.“ (Plus, I am a Yank, so I love listening to your accent!) Cheers!

Just binge watched (pun intended) several of your videos. Felt like a student again, drawing mind maps while eagerly taking in all the precious information (yes, I have always been a good student 😁). So many missing pieces started to fall into place and I cannot thank you enough for that. Your channel is a true gem found on my journey of recovery. Sending you much gratitude and appreciation, you are doing an incredible work!

I've come across your content at a very desperate point in my life. So much of your content has given me so much peace. I'm on Day 2 of healing from my BED (started on a Friday!) and I'm feeling excited and slightly nervous about this journey. Conceptually, intuitive eating makes absolute sense to me, and i look forward to how my body responds to this new relationship with food. I had accepted that being hungry was necessary to be a "healthy" wt, but I also resented it, because what kind of life is that [by choice] ?! I'm gona try and keep my black-n-white / all-or-nothing thinking in check. Thank you thank you thank you!!!

Hello 👋🏻 Sarah. Now I understand what intuitive eating really means. I am going to start my journey on Thursday. After 35 years of compulsive overeating, binging and dieting, also restricting and always new food rules, I am ready to give it a go. I am scared. Yes, I am scared but also want to figure out if this might be my cure. My healing process. Thx so much for your channel ❤

Very helpful video!! I relate to the permission mistake. Everyone kept telling me keep eating and eventually you'll balance out.. but tried it for a few yrs until binging myself into an eating disorder clinic. I think because I never restricted, I didn't really need more permission, lol! Curious your thoughts on my situation, if you get a moment. You mentioned eating 'binge' foods away from TV for a few months really helped. I only binge with TV. I don't have specific binge foods, it is anything available. I have restricted TV with eating before and it cures the binge until I start eating with TV again, longest I've gone is 46 days no TV w/ food (and no binge). But I feel deprived not allowing myself to eat in front of the TV ever. Wondering what you might try if you were in my situation?

I’m going to response to your comment with another question. You said you feel deprived by not eating in front of the TV. Deprived of what?

@@TheBingeEatingTherapist pleasure, escape. Being ‘normal’. If my hubby and I watch a movie and order take-out, I wouldn’t be able to join. But mostly just the feeling of complete escape from responsibility and stress/relaxation/not caring. Eating alone is kinda boring. Watching TV alone isn’t as pleasurable. But something happens to the brain when I do both at the same time...
@massages_for_world_peace8909

I guess also, having a rule feels aggressive. Forceful. Like I’m punishing myself (no TV for you!) for not having control that others have since they can stop eating when their belly hurts. Eating mindfully feels like another rule and feels like it takes a lot of willpower. I’ve tried other rules like ok TV is fine, but only eat what I plate for that meal, but it doesn’t work b/c I don’t feel full while distracted eating so eventually (not every time) I rebel the rule and decide to binge to prolongue the escape feeling.
@TheBingeEatingTherapist
@TheBingeEatingTherapist 3 года назад
I think anytime we think we should or should not do something, we are likely to feel deprived of the freedom to choose. Is the pain caused eating mindlessly in front of the TV greater than the discomfort of eating while staying with yourself? You don’t have to change anything. The things I share in my video are simply ideas that have helped some. Take what works and discard the rest. Unless you start from a place of you don’t have to do anything differently then you don’t really feel like you have a choice. I would highly recommend Geneen Roth’s book Women Food and God. She really dives into this stuff in great depth. Being conscious with food can actually increase your pleasure around food compared to numbing out through distraction. If food is being used to numb or ‘check out’, there may be an opportunity for some self exploration to understand the part of us that craves this experience
@massages_for_world_peace8909
@massages_for_world_peace8909 3 года назад
@@TheBingeEatingTherapist that is so funny because I just got Geneen’s book yesterday! I saw it on a different video you made of book recommendations and ordered it and I’m excited to read it. :) Hmm that is a good question, thinking about which discomfort is worse. I will reflect on that! I realize I equate “choosing” with “mindfulness” and am stuck in that victim mentality of “ughh but I have to try so hard to put energy into thinking about the choices!” lol! I will think about it more and try to frame it as self-empowerment instead of self-punishment. (You GET to choose what you want instead of you HAVE to choose better) And yes about the pleasure. I read in “Thin woman’s brain” that people with disordered eating habits get their highest pleasure thinking and dreaming about what to eat, whereas the non-disordered eaters get their most pleasure with the actual food into mouth eating and how to shift to the latter. They did brain scans, I can’t remember if they were measuring dopamine or serotonin... it’s actually a great read, you might enjoy it (you have to ignore the diet-centered cover and title). Thanks for your response! Hope you have a great day!

Once I start it is soooooo hard to stop if the food is really yummy So before I start I must accept stopping will be a little bit painful and my rational self doesn’t want or need more KNOW the emotional mind will get activated and stay separate from it It does matter to me the real me. Accept the end will b a bit hard for twenty mins after a meal and it’s just the activated emotional mind not me
@TheBingeEatingTherapist
@TheBingeEatingTherapist 2 года назад
I sometimes talk about the concept of grieving the end of a meal. Maybe part of you doesn’t want the meal to end so when it’s gone it can feel like a loss. For some people naming that in the moment as a type of grief can help

Slight bone to pick.....wouldn't forcing yourself to eat at the table for your binge food be creating a new set of rules around the eating?

@TheBingeEatingTherapist Год назад
Very valid point and I have talked about this recently on the podcast in this episode ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4BE7v_qKFao.html about the rebel and how even me sharing how I ate at the table can be interpreted as a rule for others. It never felt like forcing myself. It wasn’t a tip I heard somewhere that I thought I must start doing. The impulse to do this arose from within me. It was gentle and wise and what I needed at the time. It was never going to be a forever thing and my intention behind it was to break the connection between TV and eating particular foods. It was getting hard for me to watch TV without eating and hard to binge without watching TV
