Top, middle and bottom notes are not a way in which perfumers physically create scents, they are in order of volatility. Top notes are usually the first thing you smell and the first to dissipate (many citrus notes do this), middle and bottom notes are what carry the scent and what you will smell the most of because the molecules are bigger, bolder and are longer lasting in the air. Warmer, deeper scents like ambers and woods are your typical “bottom” notes. Remember we all smell slightly differently from one another and have different associations with scents! It’s my favorite part of creating and I’ve been collecting perfumes for years. So so much fun!

Look up scent wheel it helps know what scent is use for what note fruity usually is a sharp / top note

While there are many nuances to the labeling of notes. Traditionally, the top note refers to the opening notes, so what strikes you upon the first burn. Think of it has the appetizer and introduction of the broader fragrance profile. The middle note is the heart. The notes that fill out and make up the body of the candle - generally, but not always, the largest experience of the scent. The base notes are what round out and ground the scent which gives the candle depth and intensity and what can linger after the burn.

When I was at university my part-time job was in a perfume shop. I love learning about it! The difference between the three are based on the chemical composition and the order you will be able to smell the top, middle and base because of the stages they each evaporate. So top evaporates first because it's more volatile so you will smell those first, then heart and then base. The top note sticks around the least while the base is what you smell the longest. It's why when you spray a perfume, you should let it rest before deciding it's for you or not. Totally agree, I like to only mention the most prominent in the description.

I don't use fragrance oils because I'm striving for an 80/20 toxic free lifestyle. I use essential oils that have been tested by a 3rd party and study results are published. I just want to be sure I know what's in it and that its been sustainably sourced. I make my own blends. Honestly, it's not as strong as fragrance oils made with chemicals, so scent throw can be tricky, but I'm always up front with customers about that. Great video 👍

Typically the hot throw/strength of the FO strengths with longer curing periods! (Mainly with soy wax)

From my research this is what I gathered. Top notes are what you smell first and last the least, middle notes are more long lasting while base notes are the finishing scents to strengthen the middle notes which is why they are mainly “common” scents (vanilla, pine etc)....like if you leave the room and come back your mostly smelling middle & base notes. Top notes usually linger 20-40 minutes while bae and middle last 4-6 hours when burning.

If I see on shop candle middle, bottom and top oil, how much of each I need to add if I want to do it at home by myself. For example, I really like Zara home candle, and they have a description of it. Hope, you understand my question

Usually candle makers will not disclose that information so that they can keep their blend exclusive to their brand however, AFI is a company that if you send them a sample of the fragrance you want they can replicate it for you. They also sell very high quality fragrance oil in bulk.

Hi, I wanted to know how you deal with home privacy when shipping orders. Do you put your home address on the shipping labels? Are you allow to use a PO BOX? If so how do you deal with returns? I am into skincare and ready to do business from home but I am concerned about my security.So what do you please recommend?

Hi Pragya I’m not sure where you can get fragrance oil from India but Aromaaz international sells very good and high quality essential oils which you can also use in your candles. Hope that helps

Im going to be picking up some Cucumber Melon FO soon the notes area says all of this. Fruity notes of cucumber water, bergamot, and melon are supported by mid notes of berry vines, jasmine and white lillies on a bed of violet leaves, breeze accord, and musk......YEA my label will just say Cucumber Melon lol

Hi @Graziela Salazar Jordao I hope I’m not stepping on Erica’s boundary and feel free to remove this comment if I am. This video has information that is good and this is a bit of my 2cent that I have gathered for the top note Top notes are the notes that you first smell when you pick up any candle or at least you should smell when you pick up any candle. They also evaporate quickly and are emotionally uplifting. They are said to transition into the base notes and are the most volatile which means they burn off quicker so the percentage of fragrance oil you use in the top note depends on you, but I generally like to use a higher concentration in this note family like around the 30% mark a little more or a little less depending on the tartness and sweetness of the fragrance or what I want the first scent to be when the candle is picked up and smelled. Some scents that are in the top notes are the citrus family such as lemon, grapefruit, orange and also the aromatic fragrances such as lavender (lavender which can also be in the middle family note), lemongrass, and peppermint to name a few. Hey Erica, do you think you could make a video about quickbooks? I’ve recently downloaded it to keep track of expenses and for quarterly taxes but the app is a bit confusing.
